Jackie retired from the Hamtramck Schools where she worked as a cafeteria lady. She was affectionately known as "Grandma Jackie." Member of P.L.A.V. Post 10, Daughters of Isabella and St. Ladislaus Rainbow Seniors. Beloved wife of the late Michael. Loving mother of Donna (Patrick) Haggerty and Nancy (Walter) Betlej. Agnes Helen (Smith) Thelen Westphalia Age 95, passed away on September 27, 2009. Agnes was born on April 12, 1914 in Fowler the daughter of Peter and Katherina (Koenigsknecht) Schrauben. Mrs. Thelen was a member of St. Mary's Church in Westphalia and enjoyed quilting. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert Smith on May 7, 1954 and her second husband Norman Thelen on January 21, 1991; sons Richard and Raymond Smith and grandsons David and Dennis Smith. Surviving are her children Jerome (Rose) Smith, Hilda (Michael) Schmitz, Edward (Ann) Smith, Albert (Carolee) Smith all of Westphalia, Kathy (Ambrose) Fox of Portland and Diane (Patrick) Luna of Pewamo; stepchildren Sr. Norma Thelen, SLW of Flint, Dennis (Joan) Thelen, Clair (Catherine) Thelen, Rose Mary (John) Nurenberg and Virginia (Melvin) Drake all of Westphalia, Tom (Barbara) Thelen of St. Johns and Linda (Donald) Thelen of Eagle. Agnes has 25 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 24 step-grandchildren and 73 step-great-grandchildren. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. James Conlon at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 1, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Austin W. Jepson Austin W. Jepson, age 93, passed away September 27, 2009 at his home in Whispering Pines, North Carolina. He was born in LaCrosse, Kan., February 10, 1916, the son of Kenneth Samuel and Ellen Frances Williams Jepson. He grew up in New Waterford, Ohio and was a graduate of Ohio State University in Columbus and Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. He began his teaching career in Bucyrus, Ohio prior to being drafted into the Army for World War II. Before going overseas, he married Catherine Odebia DuPree on August 21, 1942. In the Army, First Lieutenancy Jepson was a member of the 747th Armored Tank Battalion that landed on Omaha Beach on June 7, 1944. He was severely injured in that invasion. Austin was the recipient of a Purple Heart Medal. After recuperating and finishing his European duty, he returned home in 1945. At that time, Austin and Catherine made their home in Detroit, Mich., where he was teaching in the Detroit Public Schools until his retirement. In 1951, they moved to Mount Clemens, Mich., where they lived most of their lives. Austin was active with the Boy Scouts of America, the Explorer Scouts, President of the local PTA, and President of the Michigan Industrial Education Association. In the Mount Clemens Masonic Lodge #6, he became Excellent High Priest for the Royal Arch Degree. He was an active member of the First Methodist Church of Mt. Clemens, Mich. He was also a Realtor. After moving to Whispering Pines, North Carolina in 1986, he attended the Carthage United Methodist Church. He became a dual member of Masonic Lodge #6 in Michigan and #484 in Southern Pines, NC. In the year 2000, Austin was presented with a 50-year Masonic Membership pin. The Jepsons were members of the Country Club of Whispering Pines and enjoyed golfing and socializing there. He is predeceased by his wife, Catherine DuPree Jepson; his older sister, Lucille Fuhrman; and grandson Glenn W. Miller. He is survived by daughter, Catherine (Debby) Miller and her husband, Jerry of Whispering Pines, North Carolina; grandson, Kenneth and his wife, Eliisa, of Reston, VA.; sister, Mary Jame Cameron and husband, Bill, of Forest, VA; wife's brother & sister-in-law, Horace and Jean DuPree of Kinston, NC and one great-grandson, Sebastian Lee. A graveside memorial service for the family will be held at the time of internment in the Maplewood Cemetery in Kinston, NC. The Fry & Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage, NC is serving the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to First Health Hospice Foundation, 150 Applecross Road Pinehurst, NC 28374. |

Barbara Barrett Sutton Hudson Age 83 of Hudson, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2009 in the Lenawee County Medical Care Facility in Adrian after a long illness. She was born on April 5, 1926 in Scottville, Michigan, the daughter of Orley and Elizabeth (Jenkins) Barrett. She was a graduate of Morenci High School in 1944 and of Michigan State University in 1980. She married Justin C. "Jack" Sutton, II on December 27, 1947 in Morenci and they lived in Lansing until moving to Hudson in 1988. Barbara had been employed as a model in Chicago, was former owner of the Perfection Studio (Charm School) in Lansing, was a former salesperson with Fashion Two Twenty in Detroit, and was a former marketing director for W.K.A.R., Channel 23 P.B.S. in Lansing. Barbara was a member of the O.E.S. at Morenci, the Addison United Church, the Beta-Sigma-Phi of M.S.U., a member of the Lenawee Country Club, the Devils Lake Yacht Club, the Addison and Hudson Womans Clubs, was a former director of the March of Dimes in Lansing. Barb instituted women's cheerleading at M.S.U. where she was the 1st female cheerleader in the Big Ten where she organized the 1st Big 10 female cheerleaders. She also was a former member of the M.S.U. Women's Golf Team. She enjoyed square dancing, ice-skating, golfing and dance clubs. Surviving besides her husband Jack are their children, Justin C. Sutton, III of San Diego, CA, Barrett G. Sutton of Traverse City, Tamera Jean Sutton of Ann Arbor and Tyge R. (Stephanie) Sutton of Nashville, TN, 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, her brother, James (Patricia) Barrett of Morenci and her sister, Grace Burke of Addison. She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters, Mary Lucille Stephenson and Harriet Stephens and grandson Demetrius. Clarice Lillie Salway of Jonesville passed away Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale. She was born March 21, 1920 in Trenton the daughter of John Henry and Lillie Mary (Torangue) Laurell. In Oct. of 1950 she married Grant Henry Salway and he preceded her in death in 1977; she was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Albert, Harold, Johnny and Charles Laurel; and one grandson, Bobby Easler. She is survived by three children, Rosemary (Jerry) Easler of Hillsdale, Patty (Duane) Trevathan of Hillsdale and Grant (Linda) Salway of Jonesville; eight grandchildren, Wanda (Tom) Holland, Donna (Dale) Winter, Julie (Clifford) Sparks, Mickey (Robin) Rowe, Rickey (Vivi) Rowe, April (Joe) Harper, Candie (Todd) Stalens and Sonya (Terry) Draper; two step-grandchildren, Todd (Alex) Trevathan and Gail (Brett) McClain; 24 great-grandchildren; one sister, Genevieve (Jack) Sines; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Salway graduated from Allen High School. She worked as a cook at the 99 Drive-In for many years and she also worked with her daughter, Patty at SunnyBrooke Furniture Farm. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Council of Catholic Women and the Widow’s Club. She enjoyed serving as a volunteer for many years at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Hillsdale Head Start School and at Williams Elementary School in Jonesville. A funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church noon Monday, Sept. 28th with Father Tom Butler officiating. Interment will take place in the Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville. The family will receive friends for visitation at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale 5-8 p.m. Sunday with a prayer vigil service to begin at 6 p.m. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Anthony Catholic Church. |

Dorothy M. Lance, 77, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Friday Sept. 25, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Mich. She was born Sept. 21, 1932, in LaGrange, Ind., a daughter to the late Carl and Margaret (Adair) Marks. Dorothy had resided in Sturgis since 1950 coming from LaGrange, Ind., where she graduated from LaGrange High School with the class of 1950. On Oct. 7, 1950, she married Donald I. Lance in LaGrange, Ind. He died Aug. 18, 1993. She had been employed by the Trans-O-Gram Company, Midwest Tool and Cutlery and the Sturgis Journal, all in Sturgis. She also had worked for Howe Military School in Howe, Ind., and had done office and carpet cleaning and she was a homemaker. Dorothy enjoyed reading and crocheting. She is survived by two daughters, Karen (Edward) Elmore of Sturgis and Diana Tobias of Sturgis; one son,  David (Rebecca) Lance of Nottawa; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth (Raymond) Bolander of Arizona, Doris (John) King of Burr Oak and Marjorie Toth of Toledo, Ohio; two brothers, Carl (Gloria) Marks of Sturgis and Albert Franklin Marks of Angola, Ind., and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Donald Lee Lance; one daughter, Linda Northrup and one grandson, Chad Michael Lunger. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Eileen was born on July 26, 1917, in Concord, Ill., a daughter to Earl and Ella Abernathey. Eileen was married to Charles Lawrence Kemp, who preceded her in death. She lived in Concord and Morrisonville, Ill., for many years, then in Elkhart, Ind., before moving to White Pigeon two years ago. For many years, Eileen was a grade school and junior high school music teacher in Morrisonville. She was a member of the First Christian Church. Surviving are two daughters, Georgia Locke of Elkhart, Sylvia (Tom) Cady of Phoenix; a son, Larry Kemp of Illinois; 10 grandchildren; several great-grand children; one sister, Melba Hendershot of Shawnee Mission, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; and two sons, John Stephen and Hugh Charles Kemp. Cremation has been conducted and a memorial service will be held at a later date at the Concord Christian Church, Concord, Ill. There will be no visitation. Arrangements were made by the Farrand Funeral Home, White Pigeon. Memorial contributions may be made to Three Rivers Hospice or the Concord Christian Church. George Anthony Bonner George Anthony Bonner, age 66, of Lighthouse Point, Florida, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 25, 2009, in his home surrounded by his family. He was born on March 25, 1943, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Janet; son, Rick; daughters, Kristen (Daniel) Sieloff, Joan (Ted) Cole and Sandra Lynn; one grandson, Daniel Sieloff; and one sister, Antoinette (Dennis) Perry. George was a supervisor of technical construction and maintenance with 30 years of experience when he retired from the Ford Utica Trim Plant in Utica, Michigan in 1993. He loved music of all kinds, especially Motown and golden oldies. He had a passion for baseball and was a very active player in his high school years until a knee injury prevented him from pursuing a professional career. During the 1990s, he was a volunteer assistant baseball coach, working with Bob Gilling at Eisenhower High School in Shelby Township. He enjoyed landscaping and gardening. He was an accomplished hunter and fisherman in Michigan, Wyoming and Montana who learned the joys of taking his boat in the ocean for a whole new experience when he moved to Florida with Janet in 1999. Over the years he remained an avid Detroit Red Wings and Tigers fan. She was born Nov. 19, 1917, in Kenton, Ohio to Hallie G. and Grace (Hills) Wright. She married Wayne E. Long on Oct. 28, 1978, in Coldwater and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2004. Irene lived in Coldwater from 1978 to 1987. She then moved to Leffingwell Estates in Hudson in 1987, to Arlington, Ohio in 2001, and to Bryan in March of 2004. She was previously employed at the Coleman Foundation in Hudson. Irene graduated from Forest High School in Forest, Ohio and was a member of Prattville Community Church and Ladies Aide Society. Surviving Irene are two daughters, Sharon (Phil) Klingler of Bryan, Ohio, and Norma Ferrell of Tipp City, Ohio; one son, James (Joyce) Hamilton of Arlington, Ohio; one brother, Dale E. (Mary Jane) Wright of Pittsburgh, Penn.; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; twin sister, Catherine Burk; one granddaughter; two great-great-grandchildren; and a nephew. James Thomas McLaughlin, age 81, of Three Rivers, passed away on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center.  He was born on Oct. 2, 1927, the son of Charles R. and Mary M. (Bauer) McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin was born and raised in Chicago, where he attended Morgan Park High School graduating in 1945 and later received a degree from the University of Notre Dame University in 1949.  He married Mary Suzanne “Sue” Peshcel in 1951 and worked as a broker for Hess-Stephenson Co. for over 30 years.  Upon retirement, Jim and Sue moved to Three Rivers, Mich., where Jim was later branded “Mayor of Pleasant Lake”.  He conducted “business” daily from his deck, sharing food, stories, and comaradery with family and friends. Mr. McLaughlin was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving children, Mary Beth (Steve) Young, of Quakertown, Pa., Linda Sue Whippo, of Santa Fe, N.M., James T. (Annie) McLaughlin, of Homewood, Ill., Daniel J. Kirt is survived by his wife, Teresa, and children, Scotland (Jessie), Steffanne and Jenna, and two grandchildren, Brianna and Ki-Juan. He is also survived by his mother, Sandra (Al) Banning, and brothers, Bret (Mindi) and Todd (Carmen). He was preceded in death by his father, William LaCoe. Kirt was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing, boating, skiing, snowmobiling, camping and deer hunting. He especially enjoyed cookouts, spending time with family and friends, and Harley trips with his wife. The service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at Gateway Community Church, 268 S. His Legacy… La Forest “Mike” Beauregard passed away on Sept. 22, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital at the age of 94. He lived in the Milan area for 64 years until 1979, then moved to Clinton and spent his winters in Venice, Fla., with his wife, Gertrude. He was born on June 20, 1915, in Milan, Mich., the son of Daniel and Winnie. He married Gertrude Lohr on Sept., 21, 1937, in Angola, Ind. Mike was a member of the Masons and Milan Moose Lodge. He was employed at the Ypsilanti State Regional Hospital as an occupational therapist instructor for 35 years.  His Family... He is survived by his long-time, close friend Lenore Binns, daughter Joyce Coleman of Ypsilanti, son-in-law Robert Risch of Whitmore Lake, five grandchildren: Michael Coleman of Ypsilanti, Jeff and Jim Risch of Whitmore Lake, Kim (Erik) Fix of Livonia and Scott Coleman of Ypsilanti, five great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude, daughter Mary Ann Risch, son-in-law Donald Coleman, grandson Mark Coleman and brother Harold Beauregard. His Farewell Service... Mary Angeline Woodard DeWitt Born April 18, 1922 in DeWitt, MI, the daughter of Harry and Mary (Schafer) Reed, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the age of 87. Mary was a life long resident of DeWitt, graduated from the DeWitt high school, first 12th grade graduating class, and was a full time homemaker. She enjoyed singing and was in the church choir for over 53 years. Playing cards with her friends was a favorite pastime. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Norman Savage in 1971, (31 years); second husband George Woodard in 2005, (30 years); sisters, Helen Spayde, Anna Walker; brothers Donald, Kenneth, and Gerald Reed. Mary Beth Newsome, 45, of Santiago, Dominican Republic, and previously of Reading, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, in Twin Falls, Idaho in her sister’s home. Born Feb. 17, 1964, in Monroe, she was the daughter of Frederick B. and Mildred G (Hollingsworth) Newsome. She was a 1982 graduate of Jefferson High School in Monroe. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Cedarville University and her teaching certificate from Eastern Michigan University. She had completed post graduate work in the areas of technology and counseling. Mary was a teacher and a counselor for Santiago Christian School in Santiago, Dominican Republic since 2004. She was advisor for the NHS and MUN. Prior, she taught for Reading High School for 8 years, where she served as the Drama director. Mary was active in her Dominican church, Cien Fuegos, where she served as a Sunday School teacher. In the States, she was a member of the North Reading Baptist Church, where she worked with the drama program, Sunday school, and the youth group. Mary was also a leader at Crossroads Farm. Surviving are her brothers, Dave (Mary) Newsome of Trenton, Ga., Mark (Beth) Newsome of Ooltewah, Tenn. and Paul (Cindy) Newsome of Temperance; sisters, Becky (Bob) Baird of Twin Falls and Deb Newsome of The Gambia, West Africa. Mary R. Martin Mary R. Martin (nee Robinson), age 89, of Grand Rapids, Michigan and formerly of Center Line, Michigan passed away into the hands of her Lord on September 27, 2009, in the home of her daughter, Cynthia (Kirk) Kenney in Grand Rapids. Mary was born on January 20, 1920, in Cisne, Illinois, the youngest of six children of Cinderella (Duke) and James Jasper Robinson. Following the death of her mother, Mary was raised in Webster City, Iowa with her father and his second wife, Hazel. After moving to Van Dyke (Warren), Michigan, with her two older sisters, Blondena and Cleona. Mary graduated from high school in Detroit and wed Joseph Martin at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church to whom she was married 44 years until his death in 1992, residing mostly in Center Line. She enjoyed cruises, dancing, card playing, and dining with her husband, friends, and family, and the companionship of her dog, Jocko. She is survived by her daughter and caregiver Cynthia (Kirk) Kenney; half-siblings, Chester Robinson (IA), Glen Robinson (AK), Robert Robinson (CT), Phyllis (Don) Ballentine (IA), Jean (Bob) Tracey (IA), and step-sister Patricia Kepler (IA); special niece, Katheleen (Cole) Hanselman, her husband, David, and family (Center Line, MI); in addition to many nieces and nephews across the United States. Mary was predeceased by her siblings, Cleona Hosbach, Russell Robinson, Blondena Cole, Leland Robinson and Charles Robinson; half-siblings, Captola Brothers and Clarence Robinson. Mary was a member of Celtic Cross Presbyterian Church in Warren for many years, and most recently John Knox Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids for the previous ten years. Nelly Jacobs, 64, of Columbia, Tenn., and formerly of Constantine and White Pigeon, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2009, at Maury Regional Hospital in Columbia after a one-year illness. On April 30, 1966, she married Larry C. Jacobs in White Pigeon. She worked in trailer factories and at General Motors as an inspector. She attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in White Pigeon. She enjoyed collecting dolls, Hummel figurines, fishing, horses, reading and spending time with her family. Surviving are her husband, Larry C. Robert W. Cilley, age 42, of Manitou Beach, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. He was born on Nov. 17, 1966, in Adrian, to George and Cheryl (Mickel) Cilley. He married Christine D. Kreps on June 5, 1997, in Toledo, Ohio, and she survives. Robert lived in the Addison-Manitou Beach area all his life. He graduated from Addison High School in 1984. He was a veteran in the United States Navy from 1986-88 aboard the USS Kalamazoo. He was formerly employed at Dow Automotive in Hillsdale and then employed at Honeytree Inc. in Onsted. He loved working on cars and also was a collector of Spiderman comic memorabilia. Surviving besides his wife Christine, are one son, Scott G. Mock of Manitou Beach; two daughters, Caitlin Kreps of Morenci, Courtney Boobyer of Simi Valley, Calif.; four sisters, Christina (Ray) Marquis of Cement City, Cynthia (Victor) Fowler of Rollin, Debra (Brad) Collins of Adrian, Rebalee (Jamie) Daglow of Albion; eight nephews and nieces and several great nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Pastor Matthew A. SeGraves officiating. Cremation will follow. Visitation will be from 10 a.m., until the time of the service on Saturday. Robert W. Lindsay Sr. Robert W. Lindsay Sr., age 78 of Clinton Township, passed away on Monday morning, September 28, 2009. He was born on September 22, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late James and Irene (Semp) Lindsay. Bob was united in marriage with Donna M. McElroy on November 19, 1949 in Mount Clemens. Mrs. Lindsay passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 1998 in Mount Clemens. Mr. Lindsay is survived by three children, Robert (Lynda) Lindsay Jr. of Macomb Township, Kathy (Dennis) Manciero of Harrison Township and David (Melissa) Lindsay of Chesterfield Township; seven grandchildren, Bobby, Darryl, Stacy (Matt) LeFevre, Jeff, Holly, McKenna and Luke; great-granddaughter, Madison LeFevre. He married Joyce (Pierson) Sept. 14, 1964 at Angola, Ind. she survives. Parker retired as a heavy equipment operator and repairman from Merritt Sand & Gravel, Angola, Ind.  He also worked for several other companies: Dan Blaskie Welding, Coldwater; Aggregates, Coldwater; Mike Klink Sand & Gravel, Angola, Ind; and Richard Klink Sand & Gravel, Angola, Ind. He also was an owner of the Parkers General Store, Coldwater from 1979 until 1984, and was self-employed with T Parker Excavating. He was a 1961 graduate of Coldwater High School. He was a member of the Angola Moose Lodge since 1974, and a member of the Coldwater Eagles Lodge since 1972. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed mushroom hunting, camping and NASCAR. Verna E. Rogers, 90, of Coldwater, formerly of Union City, passed away Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009 at the Laurels of Coldwater.   She was born June 6, 1919 in Elkhart, Ind. to George and Florence (Bartholomew) Grames. She married Leslie Rogers on May 28, 1936 in Auburn, Ind. He preceded her in death in 1984. Verna worked at Progressive Dynamics until retirement. She was a member of the foster grandparents program. She is survived by her children: Virginia King of Tekonsha, L. G. Rogers of Burlington, Judy Rogers of Riceville, Tenn., Bessie Krieg of Union City, eight grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and a half brother.
