Bob Karaptian, 71 , of Jonesville, passed away Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Hillsdale. He was born Sept. 25, 1937, in Detroit to Andrew and Stella (Crom) Karaptian, she survives in Jerome. Bob married Rose Marie Meusling on June 20, 1959, and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Bob retired from Hayes Albion of Jackson after a career as an industrial electrician. After retirement, he founded Bloomer Bob’s Greenhouses. Bob attended Michigan State University and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Surviving besides his wife Rose Marie and mother Stella are children, Rory (Sindy) of Boyne City, Mike (Sherri) of Jonesville, Scott (Chris) of Kalamazoo and Cheryl (Michael) Taylor of Shelby; nine grandchildren; siblings, Patricia (Joseph) Caurdy of Saline, Sharon Karaptian of Arizona and Ron Karaptian of Wyandotte. A mass of Christian burial for Bob Karaptian will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Rita’s Catholic Church at Clark Lake with Fr. Lehr Barkenquest officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Somerset Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville. Charles A. Berry, 86, of Marshall, died on Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at Sturgis Hospital. Mr. Berry was born on March 6, 1923, in Shamokin, Pa., to Charles G. and Della (Lahr) Berry. He served in the US Army during World War II, and was honorability discharged in 1943. On March 7, 1947, he married Iona Marie Fox. She preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 1984. Mr. Berry worked as a machine operator for the Eaton Corporation for 30 years. He retired Aug. 1, 1981. Mr. Berry was an avid harness racer, and enjoyed racing his horses at all the local tracks throughout Michigan and Indiana. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and football. Mr. Berry enjoyed spending time with his friends at the local coffee stops, but he especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his children, June (Rick) Wisel of White Pigeon, Charles H. (Judy) Berry of Battle Creek, Dennis Berry of Kalamazoo, and Patricia (Larry) Thorp of Ionia. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and five siblings. Visitation will take place at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home and Cremation Services from 2-8 p.m. today with family present to greet friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services celebrating his life will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Dwight Gosser officiating. Francis Joseph “Timer” Vogler, age 79, of Vicksburg, died Wednesday Sept. 23, 2009, at his home with his wife of 54 years at his side.  He was born in St. Louis, Mo. on June 8, 1930, one of 11 children born to Ernest Ludwig and Pearl Avis (Moore) Vogler.  He was a graduate of Normandy High School and later attended St. Louis University.  Timer served with the U.S. Army in Japan and Korea and was awarded the United Nations Service Medal. Timer worked in the family business known as Vogler Excavating and later worked building Lutheran churches around the country.  He later retired from Simpson Paper Company in 1990.   Timer was married to Marion Taucher on Jan. 22, 1955 in St. Englebert Catholic Church in St. Louis.  They continued to reside in St. Louis until moving to Mendon in 1966, and to Vicksburg in 2001.  He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, and working on his family’s genealogy. Timer is survived by his wife, Marion;  seven children, Debra Christiansen (William) of Schoolcraft, Mark Louis Vogler of Three Rivers, Joseph Allen Vogler (Ki Ran) of Mendon, John Anthony Vogler (Leslie) of Mendon, Steven Henry Vogler (Jeanine) of Cutlerville, Susan Elizabeth Sirna (Gregory) of Centreville, and Tony Michael Vogler (Stacy) of Wolverine Lake; twelve grandchildren;  three sisters, Delores Rich (Warren) of Chesterfield, Mo., Mary Roots of Foristell, Mo., and Sally Stroer of Arlington, Texas ; two brothers, Herbert Vogler of Lady Lake, Fla., and Fred Vogler of Florissant, Mo.; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Vogler and Ernestine Tull; three brothers, Warren Vogler, Henry Vogler, and Ernest Vogler, Jr.; a son-in-law, Dr. Jack Scobey; and a nephew killed in Vietnam, Gregory Vogler. The family will receive friends from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon, where the Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.  The funeral mass will be 11 a.m. on Monday, Sep. 28, 2009, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon with Rev. Isabel J. Abbs, age 97, a lifelong Sturgis resident, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 22, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village. She was born Aug. 19, 1912, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Davis) Burg. On Dec. 12, 1931, in Sturgis, she married Carlisle E. Abbs. He preceded her in death in 1993. Isabel was a homemaker and had worked for a short time at the Wood Motel in Sturgis. She enjoyed “being on the go,” her animals, and especially loved children and spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are three sons, Jack (Sarah) Abbs, Jerry (Imadean) Abbs, and Doug (Cathi) Abbs all of Sturgis; seven grandchildren, Timothy Abbs, Mark Abbs, James Abbs, Deborah Owsley, Patricia Abbs, Steven Abbs and Tiffany Abbs; two step-grandchildren: Greg and Nick West, and 13 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Norman, and infant sister, Genevieve. She was a member of the Northview Christian Church and she enjoyed the activities at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility especially bingo and the Red Hats. She also enjoyed doing ceramics.  She graduated from Coldwater High School. Jessica C. Weir (aka Miss Jesse) of Hillsdale, flew away to the Lord, Sept. 17, 2009, at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise Idaho. Jessica was born Jan. 24, 1989, in Hillsdale, to Charles and Suzanne (Sanders) Weir. She is survived by her parents and her twin sister, Jacqlyn C. Weir; maternal grandmother, Neva Sanders of Jackson; paternal grandparents, David and Donna Weir of Florissant, Colo. and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her dearly loved Grandpa, Gordon L. Sanders and several aunts and uncles. Jessica was homeschooled and graduated from Clonlara, Ann Arbor. She worked part time at Tractor Supply Company, helped others with their farms, and had a country band. Jessica loved the Lord Jesus Christ, her family, and her friends. She always put others first and would share a smile or kind word with anyone and everyone she would meet. Her number one passion was singing, whether in the barn or playing and performing with a classic country band. She loved farm life and home. She was a wonderful homemaker, whether cooking, canning, or making cheese. Sewing has been a lifelong interest, as was arts and crafts. Leatherwork caught her interest and she was very excited to be getting a business started. Jessica was and still is a light in the hearts of all who knew her. A celebration of Jessica’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27 at Veterans Memorial Building, 875 E. Main St., Montpelier, Ohio. Jeans, boots, and cowboy hats would be SO welcome. John R. Cook Aged 86, died on Thursday, September 25, 2009. Mr. Cook was born in St. Marys, Ohio, on December 17, 1922. He was one of six children. A twin brother, Tom, died in 1962. His older brother, George, a Circuit Court judge in Kent County, died in 1988. Mr. Cook was a resident of East Lansing for 58 years. A veteran of WWII, he served with the Signal Corps, most of the time in New Delhi, India. He received a BA in Speech and Theater, and an MA in English from the University of Michigan where he won two Avery Hopwood awards for playwriting in 1947. He was retired from the Michigan Department of Public Health where he was Director of Public Information for some 30 years. He was a volunteer for many years with the Talking Book program at MSU, the Michigan Red Cross, the Listening Ear program and the Medical Library at Ingham Regional Medical Center. Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, Justine, and two daughters, Kathy Cook of Chicago, Illinois and Jennifer Cook of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Details of the memorial service will be announced at a later date. Josephine Marie Brown, 87, of Moscow, Mich., passed away early Tuesday morning, Sept. 22, 2009, at the Buchanan Meadows Assisted Living Center in Buchanan, Mich. She was born May 12, 1922, in Moscow, Mich., to Hugh and Margaret Morgan Brown. She graduated from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit and enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War. She was a Lieutenant Junior Grade. After leaving the Navy she practiced her profession mostly as a private duty nurse in Chicago. She retired in the mid 80’s and joined her sister, Eleanor, in Moscow at their childhood home. She cared for her sister and brothers, Hugh and Robert through extended illnesses. She was preceded in death by her sister and four brothers. There are no immediate descendants. A graveside service will be held in the Rice Cemetery in Moscow, Mich. 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27 with Pastor Paul Hane officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society. |

Joyce I. Kristopher Dan Rodgers 29, Burr Oak Staff Sergeant Kristopher Dan Rodgers, age 29, of Burr Oak, Mich., and formerly of Howe, Ind., and a graduate of Lakeland High School in LaGrange, Ind., with the class of 1998, was killed Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, in Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, while serving his country with the U.S. Army. He was born Dec. 29, 1978 in LaGrange, Ind., a son to Danny and Kathryn (Smith) Rodgers. Kristopher had resided in Howe, Ind., most of his life. On Oct. 2, 1999, he married Selina Schroeder in Three Rivers, Mich. He had served in the U.S. Army for the past eight years. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Kristopher had a true passion and love of football and was a fan of the Chicago Bears and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He was also a fan of the Detroit Red Wings and enjoyed food, fishing and playing golf. Kristopher had many interests and hobbies, but his No. 1 concern and love in his life was his family. Mary E. Randolph,  age 62,  of Tecumseh, passed away Sept. 23, 2009. Mary was born Oct. 30, 1946, in Adrian, the daughter of Richard and Ellen (Burkett) Johnson. On Jan. 23, 1965, she married Ralph Randolph in Tecumseh, and he survives.  She worked in the insurance industry for many years and then for the Tecumseh Library, retiring in 1998. Mary was a member of the Tecumseh United Methodist Church. Besides her husband Ralph, she is survived by her daughter Malinda (John) Boulton of Allen; mother, Ellen Johnson of Adrian; granddaughter, Lauretta Boulton; brother Richard (Darlene) Johnson of Adrian; sisters, Valerie (Wayne) Gubbe of Tecumseh, Yvonne (Jim) Black of Adrian and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Johnson; son, Douglas Randolph and a sister in law, Barbara Seeburger . Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at the J. Michael G. Hanning, Jr., 33, of Hillsdale passed away Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, unexpectedly at his home. He was born on Jan. 28, 1976 in Hudson, the son of Michael G. and Margery L. (Lickley) Hanning, Sr. Mike enjoyed fishing, hunting and sports, especially football. He loved his family and is going to be dearly missed. R. John Blasius, 83, of Sturgis, passed away Monday evening, Sept. 21, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born Sept. 8, 1926, in Sturgis, a son of the late Russell John and Ethel (Fennell) Blasius. John was a lifelong resident of Sturgis and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1945. On Sept. 7, 1947, he married Jeanne Crabill in Bronson, Michigan. Following 40 years of dedicated employment with the Harter Corporation in Sturgis he retired in 1986. Much of his time with Harter’s he held the position of supervisor of the upholstery department. He also enjoyed working in the construction business. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army, earning the rank of Technical Sergeant, T-4 serving during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis, Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion, Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and Voiture #545 40/8. For more than 20 years he served on the City of Sturgis Parks and Cemetery Board. John enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and hunting and played on the Harter fast pitch softball team for several years. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 62 years, Jeanne; three sons, J. Dan (Mary Helen) Blasius of Ocean Side, Calif., Martin (Mary) Blasius of Lansing and James Blasius of Sturgis; four Grandchildren, Mary Ellen (her fiancée Kirk Rossi) Blasius, Teresa Blasius, Sarah Blasius and Leo Blasius; a great-grandson, Daniel; a sister, Annadell Norton of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Moret Ritter and June Wentworth; and three brothers, George, Joe and Richard Blasius. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of John Blasius will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. The Revs. Michael Klafehn and Calvin Kolzow will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. Pastor Ralph E. Ryal Marion Pastor Ralph E. Ryal, 80, went to be with the Lord Sept. 13, 2009, resident of Flint, Texas, formerly of Marion. Services will be held Oct. 7, 2009, Capital City Baptist Church in Lansing, Mich. Survivors include his wife, Vesta of Flint, Texas; children, John (Linda), Cedar Rapids, Patrick (Bonnie), San Jose, Costa Rica, Scott (Nancy) Flint, Texas; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of children in Christ. Ralph was born on Oct. 19, 1928, in Lansing, Mich. He was united in marriage to Vesta Hackney on Nov. 7, 1947. In his early 20s he gave his life to Christ and moved his family to Springfield, Mo., to attend bible college. He pastored churches in Iowa, Texas, Louisiana and Michigan, sharing his love of the Lord. He taught in Christian schools in his later years and also worked tirelessly with the men at the Rescue Mission in Lansing, Mich. His witness led to the salvation of many precious souls. Robert W. Cilley, age 42, of Manitou Beach, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. He was born on Nov. 17, 1966, in Adrian, to George and Cheryl (Mickel) Cilley. He married Christine D. Kreps on June 5, 1997, in Toledo, Ohio, and she survives. Robert lived in the Addison-Manitou Beach area all his life. He graduated from Addison High School in 1984. He was a veteran in the United States Navy from 1986-88 aboard the USS Kalamazoo. He was formerly employed at Dow Automotive in Hillsdale and then employed at Honeytree Inc. in Onsted. He loved working on cars and also was a collector of Spiderman comic memorabilia. Surviving besides his wife Christine, are one son, Scott G. Mock of Manitou Beach; two daughters, Caitlin Kreps of Morenci, Courtney Boobyer of Simi Valley, Calif.; four sisters, Christina (Ray) Marquis of Cement City, Cynthia (Victor) Fowler of Rollin, Debra (Brad) Collins of Adrian, Rebalee (Jamie) Daglow of Albion; eight nephews and nieces and several great nephews and nieces. Albert Cecil Kennicott, 72, and Ruth Alma (Wells) Kennicott, 85, of Deming, N.M. and formerly of Union City have passed away.   Ruth passed away Friday, Sept. 11, 2009 at her daughter's home in Deming. She was born to Paul Milton and Alma Marie (Lawless) Wells on April 8, 1924 on the family farm in Union City. She graduated from Union City High School in 1942.  She married Otto Weller on June 26, 1944. That marriage ended in divorce. She married William Bennett in Reno, Nev. on Sept. 7, 1962 and they were later divorced.  On Sept. 20, 1980, she married Albert Kennicott. He preceded her in death in 1982. Ruth took nurses training in Fallon, Nev. in 1966 to become an L.P.N.. She worked in hospitals in Nevada and Coldwater. She was preceded in death by parents, sisters, a son, David in 1971, husband, Albert in 1982 and special companion Veto Mustaikis in 1990. Ruth enjoyed sewing, reading, crocheting, traveling and spending time with her family. Albert passed away Jan. 4, 1982 in Branch County. He was born July 24, 1910 in Augusta, Ga. to Albert C. and Ellen (Swensen) Kennicott. He married Ruth Bennett on Sept. 20, 1982 in Union City. Albert owned the G & K gas station in Sturgis, the 76 gas station in Coldwater and he had worked for the railroad. They are survived by daughters; Diana (Lewis) Marvin of Deming, N.M., Marsha Seward of Sherwood, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, a brother, John David Robins Wells of Jefferson, Wisc., cousins and special friends, Pat and George Dudley of Rio Rancho, N.M.  He is survived by a niece, Carolyn (Lonny) Day of White Pigeon and a great nephew, Matthew. Both Albert and Ruth were cremated. A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009 from 2-3 p.m. with sharing of memories from 3-4 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home in Union City. Ruth and Albert Kennicott's ashes will be interred together at Riverside Cemetery in Union City. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice or the Branch County Food Pantry. Steven Karl Zimmerman, 62, of Quincy, passed away Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at home with his family, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 6, 1947, in Coldwater, the son of William “Bill” and Donna (Jones) Zimmerman. Steve graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1967 and served in the U.S. Army. Steve had been a truck driver for Apollo Express in Jackson. He belonged to the Reading American Legion and enjoyed leisure time woodworking, sprint car racing, ice fishing and tractor pulling. He was also a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle enthusiast and loved horses. On Nov. 24, 1990, he married Judy A. (Becker) and she preceded him in death in 2003. Survivors include two daughters, Kelly (Gordon) Thomas, Quincy and Rhonda (Nick) Langston, Hillsdale; one son, Bryan (Keri) Zimmerman, Hillsdale; two sisters, Traci Moore and Sheri Mann; two brothers, Mike and Kurt Zimmerman and five grandchildren, Lukacs, Logan and Landon Zimmerman, Jamee Thompson and Jake Langston. His parents also preceded him in death. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Reading. Victor O. Spade, 89, of Adrian and formerly of Woodbridge Township, passed away Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 at the Charlotte Stephenson Manor in Adrian under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Lenawee. He was born May 11, 1920 in Ransom Township to Claude and Inez (Hill) Spade. He was married Aug. 9, 1947 to Mirabel Russell and she survives. Victor retired from Essex Wire in Hillsdale and was formerly employed at Monroe Auto Equipment.  He has resided in Adrian the past nine years and prior to that  was a lifelong resident of the Hillsdale area.  He was a member of the Frontier United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. Surviving besides his wife Mirabel are two children, Douglas (JoAnn) Spade of Adrian and Dudley (Nancy) Spade of Tipton; and three grandchildren, Kyle, Sarah and Katie. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. Funeral services for Victor Spade will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Donald Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Frontier Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. William M. Taber Lansing Age 84, died September 23, 2009. Born May 10, 1925 in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Claude M. and Beulah (Berkhousen) Taber. He was a WWII Navy Veteran (Pacific theater) with service at Iwo Jima and an Oldsmobile retiree and long time Lansing Schools bus driver. Survivors include his wife, Ellen; sons, William (Diane) and Alan (Sara); grandchildren, Jennifer and Ryan (Sarah); 4 great-grandchildren; step-children, Doug (Diane), Jim and Linda Wylie; 7 sisters; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marice (Perry); and 2 sisters. Memorial service will be held on October 3 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church 517 W. Jolly Rd. Lansing, MI. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan 1210 West Saginaw Lansing, Michigan 48915. The family is being served by Chapel in the Pines Funeral Home., 82, of Perrinton, formerly of Dimondale, retired teacher, died Friday. Wilma Maxine Gilbert, 91, of Jackson, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at her home. She was born July 27, 1918, in Liberty Township, to Homer and Civilla (Lake) Adams. She was married Jan. 29, 1938, to Melvin F. Gilbert and he preceded her in death Aug. 23, 2008. Surviving are two sons, James (Alice) Walwarth of Jackson and Melvin (Sally) Gilbert Jr. of Hawkinsville, Georgia; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside services for Wilma Gilbert will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at Aldrich Cemetery, Somerset with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Memorial contributions are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice.
