Railroad takeover planned

Saturday, September 5, 2009 3:00 PM - Dennis Pelham

A takeover of the Southern Michigan Railroad Society is in the works. A group of local community members and business people was formed recently with a goal of taking over leadership of the railroad society, said spokesman Charles Gross, a Tecumseh attorney. The railroad society owns tracks that stretch from Clinton south through Tecumseh and into Raisin Township. About 180 people have recently signed up as new members of the railroad society, said Gross. Their votes in the railroad society’s annual meeting in November could give the group a majority on the 10-member board of directors, he said. Dissatisfaction has been simmering for years with the way the railroad society works with businesses, local governments and owners of property adjacent to the tracks, said Gross. Gross represented local businessman A.J. Brown in a lawsuit against the railroad society last year to gain approval for a crossing for a home on property Brown owns in Raisin Township. Gross said some businesses and the city of Tecumseh have also had trouble with easements for track crossings. “They’ve been a difficult group to work with in this community,” Gross said. “I hope they’ll be receptive to change,” he said.  “We tried to have this be a diverse group,” Gross said. New members included several business leaders, and all are from the local area, he said. Railroad society president Cynthia Given did not return a telephone call or respond to an e-mail seeking comment. A recorded message at the ticket office in Clinton says there are currently no excursion trips available because the locomotive is broken down. The lack of a working train to carry paying tourists is a symptom of the malaise the railroad society has been suffering in recent years, said Mark Dobronski, president of the Adrian and Blissfield Rail Road. Dobronski said he was asked by the group that Gross represents for advice on revitalizing the volunteer railroad service. “It needs a quadruple bypass and we’re here to give to them,” Dobronski said. He said he believes it is not too late to salvage the deteriorating tracks, get the locomotives and cars back in working order and make the museum in Clinton a viable attraction. For years, newsletters from the railroad society have complained about a lack of volunteers and money to keep the venture alive. “It’s because they’ve never tried to grow,” Dobronski said. Now there is a group of people willing to do something, he said, that could save the track system from being lost. “Their tracks are in abysmal condition,” Dobronski said. None of the railroad society’s three locomotives are in working condition. And cars they have used for tourist excursions need repair, he said. “I have safety concerns about what they’re riding on out there,” he said. The Hoosier Valley Railroad Society in Indiana and the Kentucky Railroad Museum near Louisville are examples of successful volunteer railroad organizations, he said. Bringing in new leadership and a large body of volunteers can turn things around for the Southern Michigan Railroad Society, he said. “I think it’s going to be positive change. The idea is to fix it and make it grow,” he said. “The right people are in the right place to take this forward.”
