Abel Fisk Cartwright died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009. Abel was born in 1917 in Ogden Center, Mich., and would have been 92 this Sept. 27. His parents, Charles Abel and Margaret Jane (Elgin) Cartwright, and two sisters, Sally Cartwright and Jane Baker, preceded him in death. He married Frieda Lena Schenk in 1946, and together they had two sons, Charles Philip Cartwright (Ellen) of Ortonville, Mich., and Robert Fisk Cartwright (Barbara) of Houston, Texas. Abel also raised a step-daughter, Carole Brown Seegert of Adrian, Mich. Abel graduated from Metamora High School and the University of Toledo. He served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He was a veteran of several 1st Division major battles in the Pacific including Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester and Peleliu. After the war, he returned with his bride to the family farm in Ogden Center, Mich. He and his father started Jasper Lumber Co. in nearby Jasper, Mich. Abel both farmed and operated the lumber yard for more than 50 years. In addition to his business and family interests, Abe also served his community as a Lenawee County commissioner and Lenawee County road commissioner. He and his wife enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and Europe and often spent time in Northern Michigan. Abel will be greatly missed by his children and their spouses; his sister, Louise Gormley of Metamora, Ohio; brother, Charles Bertelle Cartwright of Petoskey, Mich.; grandson, Charles August Cartwright of Houston, Texas; as well as many nieces, nephews and many other family and friends. Friends and family may visit today, Sept. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, 413 E. Main St. in Metamora, Ohio, where funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mary Burroughs officiating. Alexis Jaylyn Lorway Alexis Jaylyn Lorway, age one month, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009. She was born August 11, 2009 in Mount Clemens, Michigan to Amber Lorway and Jeremiah Rocho. Small as she was, she observed everything around her, looking at everyone, and responding to them with smiles, and a tug of their hair with a little fist that could really hang on. She loved her bottle and slept through the night. During her short stay she has given them such joy and love. This sweet little flower of Heavenly birth was too fair to bloom on earth. Amy was preceded in death by a sister, Julie Reuschlein. Amy graduated from East Lansing High School in 1987. She continued her education at the University of Colorado. Arlene F. Stricklen Arlene F. Stricklen, age 89, a resident of Sterling Heights died Friday, September 11, 2009 in Clinton Township. She was the owner of Granny's Goodies, a porcelain doll shop, where she made and sold dolls for 25 years. Mrs. Stricklen also enjoyed other creative crafts like crocheting and held membership in Eastern Star, Lady's Oriental Shrine, and Daughters of the Nile. Mrs. Stricklen is survived by her children, Dianne (Michael) Getchel, William (Diana), and Dennis (Barbara) Stricklen; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and brother, Kenneth Macauley. Bernal Lee Gillette, of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born Aug. 12, 1920, in Hillsdale County, the son of Clayton and Lula (Warren) Gillette. He is survived by his wife, of 59 years, Ardath Joy Gillette, whom he married on July 2, 1950. He is also survived by three sons, Gary Lee (Paula) Gillette of Montgomery Village, Maryland, Jerry Dean (Cheryl Irene) Gillette of Battle Creek and Timothy Russell (Naomi) Gillette of Taipei, Taiwan; two daughters, Carol Ann (John) Connell of Atlanta, Georgia and Wendy Sue (Steve) Osterhout of Laurel, Maryland; one son-in-law, Tom (Marcia) Macklin of Quincy; six granddaughters and six grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Patricia Lynn Macklin and three brothers, Leland, Leonard and Donald. Mr. Gillette served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of Hillsdale Free Methodist Church, the Kiwanis Club of Hillsdale and a member of the Jackson Computer Club which was his passion. He loved music and enjoyed working with school bands. He worked as a traveling salesman for Marshall Music and retired in 1992. A funeral service to honor the life of Bernal Lee Gillette will be held at the Hillsdale Free Methodist Church 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 with Pastor Keith Porter officiating. Cremation will follow the service. The family will receive friends for visitation 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Hillsdale Free Methodist Church. Betty Jean (Carter) Seal, age 81, of Three Rivers went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born in Patrick County, Va., on Jan. 24, 1928. She was married in 1946 to Herman Bailey Seal when they were reunited after his service in World War II. They lived in Mount Airy, N.C., where she worked as a seamstress at Hanes Textile and Allendale Mills. They had one daughter, Barbara Jean. In 1962, they moved to Three Rivers, Michigan. Betty Jean worked in Centreville at Denton Mills until she retired in 1991. She was a faithful attendee of Bethany Baptist Chapel and a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Three Rivers. Preceding her in death were her husband, Herman Seal; her parents, John Edgar and Della Carter; brothers Ralph Carter, Moir Carter, Gilmer Carter and William Carter; and sister Irene Seal. She is survived by a sister, Margaret Kyle; a daughter, Barbara Jean Welty; a son-in-law, William Welty; and  grandchildren Emily Welty, Nick Welty and Rebecca Welty. Betty Jean was an avid gardener, hostess extraordinaire, supreme baker of chocolate pies, self-taught pianist and enthusiastic singer. She was a delightful and generous spirit with the ability to make friends with everyone she encountered. Betty Jean’s battle with lung cancer was a courageous one which she faced with grace and good humor. Her faith enabled her to reach out to those around her and see the best in all people. She touched the lives of countless people and will be dearly missed. The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the Hohner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Three Rivers Health Hospice, c/o the Three Rivers Health Foundation. Betty Louise Lewis, age 79, of LaGrange, Ind., passed away Monday evening, Sept. 7, 2009, at her home. She was born Oct. 16, 1929, in Auburn, Ind., a daughter of the late Meryl and Erma (Chapman) Carper. Betty had resided in Ontario, Ind., for the past 35 years, coming from Sturgis. On Jan. 10, 1948, she married William Lewis in Fort Wayne, Ind. Betty was self-employed as a second-hand store operator. For many years she worked at Zickafoose Fruit Market in Sturgis and had also been employed by Michiana Container in Sturgis. She was a past member of Loyal Order of Moose #574 in Sturgis. Betty enjoyed going to the casino and was always willing to be of help to others. She had a passion and love for going to auctions and always returned home with some treasures. She is survived by two daughters, Cathy (Steven) Haney of Burr Oak and Rita (Floyd) Mast of Howe, Ind.; three sons, John (Hilde) Lewis of Sturgis, Russell Lewis of Howe, Ind., and Roy Lewis of LaGrange; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a half-sister. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; two sons, Lucky Lewis and Steve Lewis; and a great-grandson, Lawrence Ultz. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. Beverly Joyce (Hogue) Roach, 84, of Lexington, Kent. and formerly of Battle Creek and Union City, passed away peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 at Madison Health and Rehab Center in Richmond, Kent. Beverly was born June 21, 1925 in La Porte, Ind. the daughter of Lawrence Hogue and Linda (Leucht) Hogue. She grew up in La Porte, Ind. and graduated from La Porte High School on June 3, 1943. She met and married Warren R. Roach of Coldwater on June 2, 1945 in La Porte, Ind.; and was widowed Nov. 10, 1990.  She is survived by her sons: Robert (Bob) Roach of Battle Creek; Douglas (Doug) Roach and his wife Jacqueline of Lexington, Kent.; three grandchildren: Michelle Lautenschlager, Rebecca Hearn, and Elizabeth Smith; four great grandchildren: Meghan Hearn, Jacob and Aaron Lautenschlager, and Ashley Smith. Beverly is also survived by her beloved sister-in-law: Amy Roach of Coldwater, who loved, and cared for her until she moved to Lexington to be with her son in 2006. Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, her sister: Betty Fisher and her brother Richard Hogue.  She attended the Coldwater United Methodist Church with Amy and enjoyed the Church Circle and the Young at Hearts group. As a stay at home mom she was active with her sons in PTA at Territorial Elementary School and was a Cub Scout den mother. She enjoyed her morning Coffee Clutch with neighborhood friends: Lou, Deddie, Betty, and Wanda. She also enjoyed bowling, playing Pinochle every Saturday night, and camping vacations with her Dearest Family Friends Bob and Iris (Momma Ike) McWilliams and their children, Denny, Jerry, and Gail.  Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 14, 2009 at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service where the family will be present from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the Bachman Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Cynthia Skutar of the Coldwater United Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will follow at the Fort Custer National Cemetery.  Memorial tributes may be made to Alzheimer’s Association. Carrie Eleanor Pulver, 86, a lifelong Hillsdale County resident, passed away Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at the Laurels of Coldwater following a three-month battle with kidney disease. She was born Nov. 4, 1922, in Hillsdale, to Eugene and Alta (Burlew) Marsh. She was married Oct. 8, 1942 to Elmer Pulver and he survives. Carrie was a loving mother, devoted wife and a caring friend to all who knew her. Carrie and her husband Elmer established and operated Pulver’s T.V. & Appliance in Hillsdale for over 25 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hillsdale for over 60 years. She was a graduate of Hillsdale High School in 1940. Her current hobbies included baking cookies for her friends and family and raising goats. Surviving besides her husband Elmer of nearly 67 years, are  a son, John (Judi) Pulver of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Laura (Bryan) Sandera of Grand Rapids, James and Douglas Pipenger, both of Galveston, Texas; great-granddaughter, Emilie Sandera; and a sister, Vera Trevathan of Hillsdale. She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Donald; children Donald (Kelly) Litterini of Eaton Rapids and Rudy Litterini of Lansing; grandchildren, Carmilia, Austin, Anna, and Jack. Charlene L. McGinnis Lansing Died Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at the age of 60. Born March 25, 1949 to Harold and Elnora Morton in Niagara Falls, New York. Charlene was a hardworking and dedicated employee of Orchid Cellmark in East Lansing. She belonged to the Central Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. As a devoted bible student and teacher she was learning the Vietnamese language so that she could expand her ministry in teaching others. Charlene was a loving mother, grandmother and friend and will be missed dearly by all who knew her. David E. Damon of Gold Canyon, Ariz., died Sept. 8, 2009, of pancreatic cancer at the age of 75. He was born in Adrian, Mich., and served in the Air Force prior to working at Ford Motor Co. He was a member of the Peoples Presbyterian Church of Milan, Mich. He had since retired and enjoyed his work at Gold Canyon Golf Course where he could frequently be found playing. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, working with his hands and traveling. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Pearl. He is survived by his wife, Fern; his daughters, Carol (Jim) Andreski and Diane (Joe) Damon; grandchildren, David Andreski, M.D., and Lori Damon; and great-grandson Dylan Damon. Dennis E. Spearman 1947-2009 Dennis E. Spearman, 61, Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2009 in the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born in Detroit on December 30, 1947, to the late Fred and Lucille (Shaklet) Spearman. Dennis was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S Army. He received a Bronze Star for risking his life to save his squadron while on patrol in Vietnam in 1968, during the Tet Offensive. Dr. Carrie Renee Washburn Dr. Carrie Renee Washburn, age 27, a lifetime resident of Fraser, died Friday evening, September 12, 2009, in William Beaumont Hospital, following a long battle with cancer. Carrie was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, a daughter of Jon and Claudia (VanThomme) Washburn. She was a 2000 Fraser Graduate as instrument student of the year for her flute playing in the band. She received her undergraduate degree from Alma University and finished her doctorate degree in Veterinarian Medicine in 2009 from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. She was a member of the American Veterinary Association and was an avid reader who loved horseback riding. Carrie was a quiet person, was a strong, independent and never complaining person who will be deeply missed by many. Carrie is survived by her loving parents, Jon and Claudia; her dear sister, Colleen; and by her loving grandparents, Lorraine VanThomme and Howard Ellias. She is also survived by cousins. Earnest Lee Canada Sr.,  age 70, of Sturgis, Mich., entered the earthly gates on Jan. 14, 1939 in Drew, Miss. The loving son, father and grandfather entered the heavenly gates on Sept. 6, 200 at 11 a.m. at the Sturgis Hospital Emergency after what doctors believe to be a stroke. Earnest enjoyed his 70 years of life, fishing, playing cards, watching Gunsmoke, Bonanza, John Wayne movies, football and boxing. He also enjoyed 29 years with his significant other Viola. Some of his favorite past times involved camping and spending time with his grandchildren. He had been employed by Essex Wire in Three Rivers for 14 years before accepting a position at CMI in Bristol, Ind., where he worked for five years. He then went to Seneca Systems in Middlebury, Ind., where he worked for 12 years before retiring in 2004. He is survived by his loving partner of 29 years, Viola Quinn; three daughters, Nikki May Canada of Sturgis, Wanada Canada of Sacramento, Calif., and Edna Canada of Grand Rapids; two sons, Earnest Canada, Jr. of St. Louis, Miss., and Victor Canada of Grand Rapids; 12 grandchildren including, Gabriel Canada and Sara Rose Canada of Sturgis; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry Harris of Drew, Miss., and Tommie Canada of Garden Grove, Calif., and many cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Mrs. Eleanor Ruth French, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009 in her Cambria Township home after a prolonged illness. Mrs. French was born May 10, 1921 in Coloma to Jacob and Jennie Friday, well-known fruit farmers in the Coloma area. On July 13, 1945, she married Thomas R. French, Montgomery. Mr. French passed away in Cambria Township, May 13, 1999. Together they had four children; Dale Thomas (Judy) French of Lawton, Linda died in infancy, Douglas Jacob (Susan) French of Arlington, Va. And Gregory Warren (Kathy) French of Inverness, Ill. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Scott, Craig, Jason, Thomas, Katie and John Patrick and three great-grandchildren, Abbie, Katie and Allie. She is preceded in death by one grandchild, Robert in 2002; three sisters, and a brother. Mrs. French was a home economics teacher in southwest Michigan and Quincy, retiring in 1979. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hillsdale. Frances was born June 10, 1916 in Martinsville, IN to Joseph Lemuel Moore and Leona Grace (Lewis) Moore. She moved to Grand Ledge, MI and graduated from Grand Ledge High School as the 1934 Class Valedictorian. In 1935 she enrolled in postgraduate business courses and met Clayton Warner Baxter, who she married April 11, 1937. Shortly after her marriage, they moved to Lansing. In 2003 she moved to Port Charlotte to be closer to her son. Her working career started at the Harry Culp Insurance Agency as a bookkeeper and then to the Auto-Owners Insurance Co. For several years she maintained the accounts for her husband's business, involving roofing, garage construction, home remodeling and kitchens. Later she worked for the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors in the clerical department, retiring in 1976. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in 1970, transferring from Mt. Hope United Methodist Church. She attended First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte. Frances was an avid reader, gardener, world traveler, loving wife, mother and friend. She was an excellent communicator and a highly spiritual woman. Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Clayton W. Baxter; daughter, Marilyn J. Bateman; a son, Bruce E. (Janet M.) Gordon Leo Elieff Lansing Gordon Leo Elieff stepped into glory at age 83. His father George, his mother Amelia and his sister Patricia preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Marie; his eight children, Christine (Mike) Lawless, Michelle (Vince) Elie, Mary (Jeff) Day, David (Susann) Elieff, John (Kerry) Elieff, Paul (Tracy) Elieff, Joseph (Mary Jo) Elieff, and Steven (Rebecca) Elieff; four nieces; and 23 grandchildren. He served honorably in the U.S. Army in WWII earning a Purple Heart; he was an entrepreneur, business owner, real estate developer and salesman extraordinaire. He enjoyed life and had a delightful sense of humor. He loved golfing, hunting and fishing with his boys and life long friend, Bruce Seegraves. He led the Holy Cross Prayer group helping thousands come to meaningful relationship with Christ and was as a faithful member of Mount Hope Church. His was irresistibly magnetic and used his gift of influence to make thousands of friends, and point many to Jesus. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the Tiffany Funeral Home 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 14, Mount Hope Church, 202 S. Creyts Road in Lansing, with his son, Pastor John T. Elieff officiating. Viewing will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at church. Harold A. Nowak Columbiaville Harold A. Nowak, 84, of Columbiaville, passed away Wednesday (September 2, 2009) at home. He was born June 2, 1925, in Ubly, Mich. He was married to the late Shirley. She passed away on January 13, 2001. Harold had lived in Columbiaville since 1990. Prior to that, he lived in Madison Heights from 1955 to 1990. Harold was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Fourth Division and fought for his country on Iwo Jima. He was the founder of Nowak - Fraus, a Civil Engineering firm, in Royal Oak. James E. Lantis, 71, of Litchfield, passed away Tuesday, Sept 8, 2009, at the Community Health Center of Branch County, Coldwater. He was born Feb. 17, 1938, in Bluffton, Ind., to Jerald and Madeline (Huffman) Lantis and served in the U.S. Marine Corp. James retired as a sergeant from the Michigan Department of Corrections and was an avid salmon fisherman and mushroom hunter. On July 16, 1979, he married Mary Taggert and she survives. James Griswold, 69, of Union City, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.  He was born Sept. 16, 1939 in Montana to Ben and Nora (Neumiller) Griswold. He graduated from Union City High School in 1958. He attended Glen Oaks Community College and received his Tool and Die Journeyman's card. James worked at Winemiller's Manufacturing and Quality Springs Togo in Coldwater.  In 1971, he established Griswold Tool & Die in Union City. He is survived by his sister; Mary (Phil) McQueen of Sherwood, two nieces; Michel McQueen of Union City and Denise (Steve) Baker of Sherwood, one great niece; Amanda Follis, two great nephews; Garrett Follis, Josh Baker, Cody Baker and two great, great nieces; Jaylyn Tinervia and Carly Smith. Jim loved animals, enjoyed collecting coins and working with model trains. He spent many years supporting the Branch County Humane Society. There will be no visitation or service. James Wendell McCall of Grand Rapids, formerly of Hillsdale, born June 28, 1929 in Hillsdale, died Aug. 29, 2009 at his Grand Rapids Township home. He is survived by his wife, Ardath Marie (Blood) McCall, whom he married Nov. 27, 1954; his children, Carolyn (Peter) Manting  of Spring Lake, Mich., Gregory (Bryn) McCall of Hilliard, Ohio and Arthur McCall of Hillsdale; grandchildren, Ben Manting, Emily Manting, Ryan McCall, Seth McCall, Brent McCall and Arthur McCall, Jr.; his sister, Marilyn Trytten of Ann Arbor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wendell and Mary Wave McCall. Jim was a 1947 graduate of Hillsdale High School and attended Hillsdale College for two years while living at home and working at the family business. He was a 1951 graduate of Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in lumber retailing. After two years in the Army during the Korean War he took over as manager of the family business, McCall Lumber & Fuel Company. Jim sold the business in 1988 and after working part time for three years for the new owner, he retired. He was retired for one day when he was asked to be the founding executive director of the newly organizing Hillsdale County Community Foundation where he worked for the next 10 years steering the new foundation to great growth. During their years in Hillsdale, Ardath and Jim welcomed to their home and family over 60 international students as well as several foster children and Hillsdale College students. Throughout the many years in Hillsdale, Jim served on many boards including The Community Concert Association, the Y.M.C.A., Hillsdale Library and the Hillsdale State Savings Bank. He was a member of Kiwanis International for over 55 years. As a member and elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale, Jim served on Session, and two pulpit search committees. He received several community service awards in Hillsdale. Among others, he received an “Outstanding Alumni Award” from Hillsdale College in 1997, “Book of Golden Deeds” award from the Exchange Club in 1998 and the “Marvin E. Howell Award” from the Hillsdale County Industrial Development Commission in 1997 that recognizes a long-term contribution to the economic and industrial growth of Hillsdale County. Moving to Grand Rapids in 2003, Jim joined the Westminster Presbyterian Church where he volunteered, and at times worked, as an interim in different areas of administration. He volunteered regularly at the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden at Frederik Meijer Gardens. He was active in Golden K Kiwanis and mentored children in reading at Mulick Park Elementary School. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11 in the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale, 31 North Street. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale. Jean Luella Upleger was born October 1, 1922, in Lapeer, the daughter of Albert and Ella Upleger. Mrs. Christiansen was the cherished wife of 63 years to H. Dean Christiansen. Joanne R. (Barnum) MacDonald Lansing Age 77, surrendered her struggle with cancer on Friday, September 11, 2009. She was born to S.A. and Velma Barnum on November 29, 1931, in Hastings, Michigan. Jo loved gardening, reading, decorating and "Dancing with the Stars." When asked what her greatest accomplishment in life had been, she would glowingly reply, "my three beautiful children." In retirement, Joanne designed and produced wonderful pillows, which she sold locally. Many of her creations were hand embroidered with silk ribbon. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ronald and Robert (Lois) Barnum; and son-in-law, Ronald Laxton. Jodi was a waitress and loved by all the patrons at Tina’s Kitchen. She was a member of the Ghostriders Motorcycle Club. She loved motorcycles. Jodi was a great homemaker, mother, daughter, and sister. She liked collecting brown haired angels and finding Just the Right Shoe. Joseph E. Van Camp, age 53, of Belleville, and formerly of Mendon, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Sep. 9, 2009 at his home.  He was born in Muncie, Ind., on May 15, 1956, the son of James E. and Clova H. (Porter) Van Camp.  The family moved to Mendon in 1968 where Joseph graduated from Mendon High School with the class of 1975, and later graduated from Glen Oaks Community College. Joseph has been a pilot for the past 35 years, flying for Wolverine, Reliant, Kalitta, Ameristar, and Primaris Airlines.  He was an active member of the Three Rivers Free & Accepted Masons Mt. Hermon Lodge #24, and Ypsilanti Lodge #54; past member of  the Centreville Salathial Chapter #11 R & AM where he served as Past Master and High Priest;  past TIM Nebuzaradan Council #6 R & SM; past member Sturgis Columbia Commandery #18.  He was also a member of the Three Rivers Order of Eastern Star Chapter #210.  Joseph was a avid fisherman and was a corvette enthusiast. He was also a Green Bay Packer fan, and enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews. Joseph is survived by one sister, Tomi Van Camp-Harrison (Forest Jr.) of Zanesville, Ind.; one brother, Peter Van Camp (Judy) of Mendon; one half-brother, James Earl Van Camp of Delphi, Ind.; seven nieces and nephews, Adam and Jennifer Harrison, Sarah and Megan Van Camp, Spencer Schrader, Mike Van Camp, and Melissa Morin.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James in 1978, and Clova in 1987. Louise M. Coopshaw, 85, of Deerfield passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at Provincial House in Adrian, Mich. Louise was born on May 16, 1924, in Riga Township, Mich., the daughter of Karl and Elizabeth (Seegert) Holtz. On Jan. 31, 1944, Louise married Joseph Coopshaw. He preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1999. Louise was co-owner and operator of Skagmo’s Market in Petersburg, Mich., in earlier years and later went to work for the Lenawee Medical Care Facility in Adrian as a nurse’s aide for more than 10 years before retiring. She was a member of the Deerfield American Legion Post #392 Ladies Auxillary and enjoyed arts and crafts, including painting and flower arranging. Surviving are her children, Shirley (Richard) Soldwish of Deerfield and Edward (Lucinda) Coopshaw of Deerfield; four grandchildren, Amy (Aaron) Konoff of Whitehouse, Ohio, Terry (Shelley) Coopshaw of Deerfield, Troy (Stacy) Soldwish of Deerfield and Nicholas (Devet) Coopshaw of Blissfield; and five great-grandchildren, Alison and Alex Konoff, Craig Coopshaw, Deegan and Cody Coopshaw; and a great-grandson on the way. In addition to her husband, Joseph, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Irvin and Carlton Holtz; and one sister, Minerva Funk. Marilyn J. Brown, age 72, of Manitou Beach passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at her home. She was born on Jan. 27, 1937, in Jonesville, Mich., to Clyde C. and Dorothy (Howard) Heamon. She married Dale L. Brown on June 27, 1954, in Jackson, Mich., and he survives. Marilyn was raised in the Jackson area, and then she lived the past 40 years in the Manitou Beach area. She attended Jackson High School. She was formerly employed at Faraday in Tecumseh. She was a housewife for many years and also was an Avon dealer. Marilyn was an avid bowler, and she loved flowers, enjoyed garage sales and hummingbird figurine collecting. Surviving besides her husband Dale are one son, Clyde L. “Butch” (Janelle) Brown of Onsted; three daughters, Dorothy (Monty) Marowelli of Clayton, Cathy O’Neil and her friend Travis Cramer of Manitou Beach and Mary Brown of Hudson; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one nephew; and two nieces.  She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, one great-granddaughter and one stepsister. Phyllis Jean Nelson East Lansing Passed away at Sparrow Hospital on September 10, 2009. Phyllis was born in East Lake on February 26, 1924, the youngest child of John Rykala and Kathryn Olszewski Rykala. She was predeceased by her parents, and her brothers, Theodore and Stanley Rykala. Growing up in East Lake, Phyllis and her brothers worked at the family general store which they later donated to the Michigan State University Museum. It remains on permanent display as Stanley's Crossroads Store in honor of her brother who was killed in WWII. Phyllis graduated from Manistee High School in 1940 at the age of 16 and went on to graduate in music education from Michigan State College in 1944. She later earned her master's degree from Michigan State University in 1969. On August 29, 1946, she married her high school sweetheart Henry Nelson from Manistee and the couple settled in East Lansing. After graduating from MSC, Phyllis started her teaching career with Williamston Community Schools and then spent many years as an elementary vocal music teacher in East Lansing retiring in 1983. She was a specialist in the Orff philosophy of music education traveling overseas to study and giving numerous clinics and workshops. She authored several books for elementary music teachers based on the Orff philosophy, foremost of which was "The Michigan Song Bag" published in 1986. After retiring from teaching, Phyllis continued her work in music with the Lansing Matinee Musicale arranging and directing programs. She was working on several of the group's upcoming presentations at the time of her death. In addition to her career in the public schools, Phyllis was a charter member of Edgewood United Church where she served as choir director for many years. Phyllis was a member of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association and the Michigan Music Educator's Association which chose her as their Elementary Music Teacher of the Year in 1978. She belonged to the Michigan State University Alumni Association, the Michigan State University Alumni Band, the Association for the Advancement of Retired People, and the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel Surviving Phyllis are her husband, Henry; daughters, Christine (Bruce Ronda) Nelson of Ft. Collins, CO; Kathy (E. Thomas) Fitzgerald of Owosso; son, Jack (Nancy) Nelson of Williamston; granddaughter, Mary Kate Fitzgerald of Chicago; and grandsons, Michael Nelson of Chicago and Matthew Nelson of Northville. Phyllis has given the gift of her body to the willed body donor program at Michigan State University. A memorial service will be held November 22 at 2 pm at Edgewood United Church in East Lansing. She was born June 25, 1936 in Piqua, Ohio the daughter of the late Joseph and Philomena (Wehner) Gleason. She was a graduate of Ansonia High School, in Ohio, she served in the Women's Army Corp for 2 years from 1954-56. Rose married Dale R. Schniedewind on August 3, 1956 in Washington D.C., he died on November 1, 2008. She was a longtime area resident and enjoyed being a Foster grandmother at Croswell Schools. Richard Robert Safstrom of Pioneer, Ohio passed away Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, at Hillside Country Living in Bryan, Ohio. He was born Jan. 3, 1925 in Liberty, Penn., the son of Axel and Genevieve (Stickles) Safstrom. He is survived by his wife, of 38 years, Phyllis Saftsrom whom he married on Dec. 11, 1970; three step-children, Gail Ann (Mark) Maier of Pittsford, Douglas (Lori) Borton of Britton, and Peggy Moor of Whitehouse, Ohio; 10 step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one step-daughter, Deborah King. Mr. Safstrom served his country in the United States Army during World War II and he was the former owner of Merry Lake restaurant in Camden. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Richard Robert Safstrom will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale 1 p.m. Saturday. Robert C. "Coach" Mason Dryden Robert C. Coach Mason, Sr., 75, of Dryden, passed away Friday (September 4, 2009). He was born October 8, 1933, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., the son of Lyle and Esther (McCready) Mason. He married Barbara Lewis on March 7, 1953 in St. Ignace, Mich. Bob earned his bachelor s degree in teaching from Western Michigan University, taught class and coached football, basketball, baseball and golf at Dryden High School for 30 years and also served as an official until his retirement in 1995. He had played minor league baseball for the Washington Senators and was inducted in the U.P. Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998. He was also a member of the Imlay City Eagles. Robert J Bilger Bob passed away peacefully on September 8, 2009, at home with his family at his side. Bob was born in Orlando Florida on June 9, 1948 to Robert and Doris Bolger. He grew up in Florida and joined the Marine Corps after graduating from High School. He served in Vietnam where he was a two time recipient of the Purple Heart. After his service time, he moved to East Lansing to attend Michigan State University and made it his home after meeting his wife. He retired from East Lansing Post Office after 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents and close friend, Bob Boling. He is survived by his wife and soul mate of 32 years, Kim; daughter, Stacy (Curt) Bumbalough; sons, Steve and Barry; grandchildren, Donald, Erica, and David Feldpausch, Ashley Monroe, Eric and Ian Bumbalough; a great-grandson on the way; brothers, Michael and William (Cathy) Bilger; sisters, Diane Vitello and Margo Reed; brother-in-law, Bill (Bonnie) Toaz; close friend, Bill Byam; and several nieces and nephews. Swiss, also of Saginaw, in 1948. They made their home in Dayton, OH, before moving back to the Lansing area in 1953. At that time, Mrs. Swiss was employed by the Lansing School District as an elementary art teacher. She continued in this job until her retirement in 1982. Mrs. Swiss was known as an artist, as well as a teacher. She was an active member for years in the Lansing Art Guild, the Lansing Art Gallery, Friends of Kresge Art Gallery, Michigan Watercolor Society, as well as professional art organizations: MAEA and NAEA. She was a frequent exhibitor in Mid-Michigan galleries as she remained active as an artist during retirement. Sally's sorority affiliation at MSU was with Kappa Kappa Gamma. She and her husband were also MSU Alumni Association members, they enjoyed the Benedict Dance Club, MSU sports, and, during their retirement, swam at the Parkwood YMCA. They vacationed each summer at Glen Lake, and in winter in Florida or Arizona. Sally was a member of Central United Methodist Church and was a choir member for 35 years. Sally was preceded in death by: her husband, Robert; her sister, Catherine; and her brothers, Robert and Thomas. Bob worked at the Jonesville Market for the past six years and was previously employed at United Oil Co. Roman Kurzawski, age 79, of Colon, passed away Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, at his home after several months of failing health. Roman was born July 13, 1930, a son to the late Gregory and Lucy Kurzawski. On Jan. 9, 1954, he married Margaret E. Thatch in Louisville, Ky. and she preceded him in death on Dec. 18, 2000. Roman had served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He had made his home in Colon since 1969 coming from Harvey, Ill. Roman had worked for the former Kirsch Company of Sturgis from 1970 until his retirement in 1992. Roman was a life time Chicago Cub’s & Bear’s fan, he also enjoyed bingo, fishing, golf, casinos, and hand crafts. He is survived by one daughter, Sherri (C.J.) Haisman of Colon; one son, Michael L. Russell Charles Hinkle Holt Age 73, died peacefully on September 10, 2009 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Born May 26, 1936 in Philadelphia, PA to Jacob Edward Hinkle and Edith Hoover Fry. He moved to Mason, MI when he was 3 years old, graduated from Mason High School and then the University of Michigan. In 1961 he married Ruth Lynne Salter. Russ was a respected architect in the Lansing area for 50 years retiring from Keystone Design Group in 2004. He was a partner in Stein Hinkle Dawe Wood and Johnson, which later became Keystone Design Group. Active with the Boy Scout Troop 763, he served as an Assistant Scoutmaster. He also served as President of the Mason School Board, an Elder of First Presbyterian Church of Holt, and was a lifetime member of the Mason Masonic Lodge. He served as a Member and Past President of Holt Lions Club and is a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the past President of the Mid-Michigan Chapter. Russ enjoyed Michigan football, traveling in the motor home, gardening, woodworking, stained glass, and spending time with his family. For those reasons, he will be missed very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Walter C. Hinkle and brother-in-law, Stewart Miller. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Ruth; son Russell W. Hinkle (Julie); daughter, Catherine R. Sister Anthonita Porta, formerly known as Dolores Porta, died Sept. 9, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center, Adrian, Mich. She was 76 years of age and in the 59th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister Anthonita was born in Detroit, Mich., to Anthony and Mary (McGrinn) Porta. Sister graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian, Mich., and received a bachelor of home economics degree from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian Mich., and a master of education degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sister spent 56 years ministering in education in Chicago, Ill.; Cleveland, Ohio; and Mt. Clemens, St. Clair Shores and Adrian, Mich. She founded the Montessori Children’s House in Adrian in 1971 and for 17 years was the director. From 1989 to 1993 she was administrator and teacher. Sister began the Adrian Dominican Montessori Teacher Education Institution in which she was both director and teacher from 1993 to 2009. She taught in five Montessori Teacher Education Institutes around the country including the Northeast Montessori Program, Orlando Montessori Institute, Indiana University Montessori Program, Bowling Green Montessori Institute and the Adrian Dominican Montessori Teacher Education Institute. Sister also established an At Risk Scholarship Fund for children at St. Joseph Academy to attend the program. Sister was a resident of Adrian since 1989. Sister Anthonita is survived by a brother, Michael Porta of Wayne, Mich., and two sisters, Ann D’arcy of Northville, Mich., and Anthonita Porta of Lees Summit, Mo., and loving nieces and nephews. Visitation is from 6:15 to 7 p.m. in the Rose Room at the Dominican Life Center on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery. Stephen M. Beedle 1949 - 2009 Stephen M. Beedle, D.D.S., 59, Pigeon, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at home with his family and loved ones near. He was born December 21, 1949 in Pontiac, the son of Harold "Hal" Gale and Betty Ann (Thompson) Beedle. On August 19, 1972 he was married to Laura J. Polando at Newman Chapel on the Wayne State University campus. He was a 1968 graduate of Clawson High School, received his B.S. in 1972 from Wayne State University and his D.D.S. from the University of Michigan Dental School in 1976. Steve was a member of St. John Episcopal Church, Sand Point, for over 20 years. Along with his sons, he was active with Boy Scout Troop 545 of Elkton. He was past president of the Pigeon Rotary Club. He enjoyed fly-fishing on the Fox River and the Rifle River as well as throughout Michigan. He enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle, horseback riding, as well as many other outdoor sports. He also liked to travel and enjoyed going to the opera with Dr. Mancuso. He was an avid pre-Revolutionary War historian. For more than 12 years, he and his family enjoyed rendezvous camping, where they took part in pre-Revolutionary War enactment life and camping. Dr. Steve was a servant to many during his years of dental practice in Pigeon since 1977, where he was active until his death. He and his family deeply appreciated the care of Heartland Hospice throughout his illness. He is survived by his wife, Laura, Pigeon; two sons, Joseph W. Beedle, Caro and his fianc Rochelle Keller, and Gordon M. Beedle, Saginaw; his mother, Betty Beedle and her friend, Pless Henry; a sister, Christine Bowlby; several nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Buchynski; brothers and sisters-in-law, Colin (Sherry) Polando, Maxine (Gary) Smith, Gordie (Carrie) Polando, and Ross Polando; and many friends and co-workers. He was preceded in death by his father, Hal Beedle, sister, Gayle Beedle, and brother-in-law, Chris Bowlby. Funeral services were heldon Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon, with Rev. Raymond Orth officiating. Cremation followed at Sunset Valley Crematory, Bay City. Memorials may be made to the Lake Huron Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America or St. John Episcopal Church. Arrangements were handled by the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. |

Ted L. Ledbetter Ted L. Ledbetter, age 77, of Warren, passed away on September 11, 2009 at Stoneleigh Residence in Lansing, Mich. He was born on December 24, 1931 in Fulton, Kentucky to the late Guy and Mozelle (Williams) Ledbetter. He was also predeceased by his sister, Patty Brewster. Mr. Ledbetter was the youngest of two children. In August of 1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Dolores (Stanichuk) Ledbetter. They shared over 57 years together. Ted was a proud union carpenter for over 40 years, working for many large general contractors in the Detroit area. He loved spending time at his cottage in Grayling, Mich. where he enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, boating, and four-wheeling. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Dolores; their daughter, Deanna D. Ledbetter, and their son, Ted H. Ledbetter. He is survived by his daughter, Connie; and son-in-law, Mike Stevens and daughter-in-law, Debra Ledbetter; grandchildren Nicole, Jonathan, Michelle, Ted Jr., Kendall, Taylor, and Reed. The family would like to express special thanks to their wonderful friends and neighbors at home and up north for their many years of friendship, especially Lowell Carr and Shirley Garner. Vicki Lynn VanKirk, age 47‚ of Centreville, passed away into the loving arms of her heavenly Father, Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009. Vicki was born in Chicago, on April 23, 1962, a daughter of William and Audrey (Mesch) VanKirk. Vicki was a member of Fish Lake Bible Church. She loved life and her family very much. Surviving are her sisters, Rose (Brad) Balk, Andrea McWatters, Laura Penar, and Caroline (Larry) Miller, all of Centreville, and Eva Lawrenz of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother, William Scott VanKirk of Chicago; four nieces; four nephews; five great-nieces; three great-nephews; and her foster parents, Don and Judy Gross of Centreville. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and a nephew. Relatives and friends will be received Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Eley Funeral Home in Centreville. Virginia Marie “Ginnie” Lips, age 83, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away early Monday morning Sept. 7, 2009, at her home. She was born June 29, 1926, in Kalamazoo, Mich., a daughter to the late Carl William and Mary (Macey) Hanichen. Virginia had resided in Sturgis since 1952 coming from Chicago, where she attended and graduated from the Illinois Masonic Hospital School of Nursing receiving her license as a registered nurse. Her early life was spent in Vicksburg where she graduated from Vicksburg High School with the class of 1944. On July 16, 1949, she married Conrad G. “Connie” Lips in Vicksburg. He died Feb. 28, 2007. In 1955, she was hired as a registered nurse at the Sturgis Memorial Hospital and retired in 1983. The last 20 years of her career she held the position of operating room supervisor. With her husband, she owned Litho Printers in Sturgis from 1963-1995. Virginia enjoyed sewing, cooking, traveling and for many years spending the winters at her and Connie’s home in Winter Haven, Fla. Virginia truly loved time spent with her family especially her grandchildren. She is survived her daughter Caryl Susan (Wes Garner) Fittro of Sturgis; six grandchildren, Maria (Lt. Colonel Brent) Lawniczak of Millbrook, Ala., Christian (Becky) Fittro of Middlebury, Ind., Joshua Fittro of Sturgis, Samuel (Holly) Fittro of Sturgis, Meghan (Will) Dobberteen of Sturgis and Hannah (Matt) Lehman of Sturgis; nine great-grandchildren. Justin, Chelsea, Ryan and Emily Lawniczak, Blake and Taylor Fittro, Noah Lehman and Ethan and Blake Furr; one brother, Bill (Ellen) Hanichen of Muskegon; sister-in-law, Marlea Hanichen of Vicksburg and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, James Hanichen. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. William (Bill) Dunsmore, 69, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009 in Bunnell, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents Grant and Lorna (West) Dunsmore and a sister at birth. Bill is survived by his loving wife Donna (Spear) Dunsmore of 13 years, of Bunnell, Fla.; son Michael Dunsmore of Waldo, Fla.; daughters Sherry Dunsmore of Union City and Sue VanWormer of Indiana; step-children John Graham of Vicksburg, Curt Graham of Numa, Iowa, Cindi Randol of Indiana, Mary Rigdon of Missouri, Kristi Boyd of East Leroy; daughter-in-law Therea Butler; and brother Roy Dunsmore of Coldwater. He had 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was employed for Jet Express, U.C.I., Townsend Tree Service and Lewis Tree Service. Bill enjoyed fishing, Nascar, working in the yard and in the garage and also riding his motorcycle and having barbecue with his family and friends, but most of all he enjoyed traveling and watching the ocean with his angel of 13 years. Retired in 1982 from Hughes-Hatcher after 20 years as a seamstress. Member of Ladies Auxiliary of San Marino Club. Hobbies included knitting, crocheting, sewing, gardening and loved time with her grandchildren.
