      Alfred B. Loos, 88, of Sand Lake, formerly of Livonia, Mich., died Sept. 19, 2008. Alfred was born April 6, 1920, in Detroit, the son of Fred and Wanda Loos. He graduated from Cooley High School and entered the Army Air Corps in 1942. He worked for Ford Motor Company for 35 years until his retirement. He married Laura (Edelmayer) Loos on Oct. 3, 1947, and they were married 60 years. He was a proud member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Allan.…

        Alice I. Cook, 65, of Kendallville, Ind., and formerly of Howe, Ind., died Sept. 23, 2008, at the Shepherd of The Hill Nursing Home in Kendallville. Visitation is from 2 p.m. Saturday until the time of the memorial service at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Carney-Frost Funeral Home in LaGrange.             Anna Kathleen (Becke) Pollack, age 83, of Colon, passed away Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at the Laurels of Coldwater. Anna was born Jan. 5, 1925, in Elnora, Ind., a daughter to the late Bert and May (Edmondson) Carr. Anna graduated from Lakeview High School in Battle Creek with the Class of 1943. She moved to the Colon area in the early 1950s where she has made her home ever since. Anna married Carl J. Pollack Sr. He preceded her in death. She later married William Becke and he also preceded her in death. …

            • Anna M. Parak 1930-2008 Anna May Parak, 78, Port Hope, passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at Bay Medical Center in Bay City. She was born on July 19, 1930 in Detroit, daughter of the late Henry and Marguerite (Krucher) Casper. She was united in marriage to Ronald Parak on October 1, 1949 in St. Matthews Catholic Church in Harper Woods. Anna May was a loving wife and blessed and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She and Ronald would have celebrated 59 years of marriage on October 1, 2008. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Dwight, the Holy Rosary Sodality, Good Sams Club, Allegro Motor Home Club and the Grindstone Port Hope Sportsman Club. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Parak, Port Hope; two daughters, Susan (Robert) Torigian, Cave Creek, Ariz. and Cindy (Robert) Arch, Shelby Township; five sons, Michael (Sarah) Parak, Beverly Hills, Gary (Barbara) Parak, Sterling Heights, Allen (Patty) Parak, Shelby Township, Dennis (Nona) Parak, Shelby Township and Ronald (Lorrie) Parak Jr., Utica; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry Casper, Harper Woods and one sister, Cecelia (Daniel) Lemanski, Grosse Pointe. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Lou Rister. Services were held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dwight. Fr. Mieczyslaw Oniskiewicz, pastor, officiated.                                                 • Charles C. Herrington 1926-2008 Dr. Clark Herrington, 82, Bad Axe, died of heart failure on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. Charles Clark Herrington was born June 3, 1926 in Bad Axe, the son of Dr. Charles I. Herrington and Phebe Clark Herrington. Dr. Herrington married Jeannette W. Buckley on July 8, 1950, in Mount Clemens. She preceded him in death on January 5, 1993. He married Jane Raven Smith on August 11, 1996. After graduating from Bad Axe High School in 1944, Dr. Herrington served in the U.S. Army. Upon discharge, he attended the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine. After medical school, Dr. Herrington completed his surgical residency and trauma training at Detroit Receiving Hospital and Harper Hospital, where he served as chief resident. He then returned to Bad Axe with Jenny and raised their family of seven children. Dr. Herrington was a dedicated physician and community member. Dr. Herrington practiced general surgery throughout the Thumb area. He was instrumental in the formation of Huron Memorial Hospital and served on its board for many years. He was committed to the improvement of the medical profession and worked for the educational advancement of students and practitioners. He was a member of the Michigan State Medical Society and the Detroit Academy of Surgery. Dr. Herrington was also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as president of the Midwest Surgical Association. After his retirement in 1982, Dr. Herrington taught in the St. Clair County Community College Nursing Program in Bad Axe. He also served on the Bad Axe City Council for several years. He was an Eagle Scout, and enjoyed playing trombone in the community band in the 1970s. He was an avid reader with a special interest in the American Civil War. He is survived by his wife, Jane; his children, Susan (Joseph) Schwedler, Crystal Falls, Catherine (Michael Taft) Herrington, Ann Arbor, Charles (Ilene Shell) Herrington, Boise, Idaho, the Hon. David (Shelley) Herrington, Port Austin, Marion (James Warchall) Herrington, Port Austin, Dorothy Herrington, Salt Lake City, Utah and Margaret (Tim) Hinkle, Melrose, Mass.; step-children, Brien (Ann) Smith, Dallas, Texas, Maggie Smith, John Smith, Ann (Lance) Bell and Adam Smith, all of San Antonio, Texas; fourteen grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; sister, Mary (Nate) Herrington Whiteside, Glen Arbor and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Navy SEAL Joseph Clark Schwedler. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be conducted at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Bad Axe, at 1 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2008 Visitation will take place at the MacAlpine Funeral Home, Bad Axe, on Thursday, September 25, 2008 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Huron Medical Center Foundation or St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Bad Axe. Edith married Gail Corey in 1938 and was his loving wife for 55 years until his passing in 1993. Edith was retired from the Housekeeping Department at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Francis, husband Gail, daughter Joanne and son Richard. Edith is survived by son Don and daughter-in-law Margaret of Applegate, daughter Joyce Corey of Macomb County, eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Edith will always be remembered for her love of life and her love to dance, especially line dancing to Country Music. She was a firecracker and will be missed by all who knew her. Romzek, 81, Ruth, passed away Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born on November 29, 1926 in Sigel Township, to the late Peter and Rose (Kubacki) Smaglinski. She married Irvin J. Romek on June 14, 1947 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. He preceded her in death on November 9, 2007. Ernestine attended a rural school until the eighth grade. She worked in a factory in Detroit during WWII. Ernestine then returned to the family farm for the rest of her life. She was a life long member of St. Mary Catholic church in Parisville where she was a member of the Rosary Sodality. She always enjoyed her flower garden, watching hummingbirds, hunting for morel mushrooms and picking agate stones at Lake Superior. She was a gardener and naturalist. She was proficient at crocheting, knitting, embroidery, quilting, basket weaving, sewing and ceramics. She also liked to play cards and enjoyed bingo, especially at Our Lady of Lake Huron Church in Harbor Beach. Ernestine was the best Ma and Grandma in the whole world. She is survived by six sons, Lt. Koehn 1924-2008 Frederick William Koehn, 84, Farmington, Minn., went to be with Jesus on September 19, 2008. He was born on February 5, 1924, to Herman C. and Ida (Arndt) Koehn, Harbor Beach. He was baptized on March 16, 1924 and confirmed at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Harbor Beach. He graduated on June 7, 1942 from Harbor Beach High School, Harbor Beach. He served in World War II from 1943-1946. Served 30 months in Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic and spent seven months in Europe. In 1950 he graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in Forestry. He worked as a railroad tie inspector for Illinois Central Railroad. In 1955 he graduated from University of Michigan with a Master's degree in Wood Technology. On June 18, 1955, Vera Olinda Uetrecht at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, St. Loius, Mo. Fred & Vera moved to Two Rivers, Wis., where Fred worked for Hamilton Manufacturing Co. for five years. In 1960, after one year with PlywoodFab Services in Minneapolis, Minn., Fred began work with 3M Company and retired after 25 years of service. He was a faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Edina and served many years as trustee and took pleasure working as a handyman. His real hobby in retirement was refinishing old trunks. Fred was an avid supporter of Christian education and Concordia Seminary. His mission trips included three summers teaching VBS to Indian children in Canada, and two trips to Russia. He is survived by wife, Vera; sons, David (Sally), Paul (Lori Rene) and Charles (Gayla); grandchildren, Bethany, Josiah, Daniel, Hannah, Julia, Ryan and Justin; sister, Gladys and the family of Tsega Yemane of Ethiopia. He was born July 15, 1918 in Chandler Township, son of the late Nelson and Virginia (Ducharme) Hebert. He was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dondineau on their family farm in Pinnebog. He was united in marriage to June Sternberg on November 30, 1941 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. After graduating from the Pinnebog High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1945 on the U.S.S. West Point Navy Transport as a medic in the hospital corps. Peter was a well known banker in the Huron County area for 41 years. He first worked for Hubbard State Bank in Kinde. He was a former chairman of the board for Community Bank which had seven branches in Huron County. Peter was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. He was also a member of many area boards and clubs, including, Huron Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, the Knights of Columbus #1546, Bad Axe Rotary, V.F.W and Verona Hills Golf Course. John was a 4-H Leader for nearly 30 years, teaching leather craft, photography, rocketry and woodworking. He was a member of the Sanilac County Fair Board, the Cass City Historical Society and the Cass City Genealogy Society and did a great deal of work on the research of the Elkland Township Cemetery map. John enjoyed golf and was a member of a golf league for many years. He truly enjoyed his family and friends.
