LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Wednesday, August 5, 2009 9:10 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Relay an inviting time To the editor, Looking for a way to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember loved ones lost and fight back against cancer? Take part in Relay For Life, the signature fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. This non-competitive event invites teams of community members to walk a track overnight to raise funds and increase awareness for the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer. This year’s Relay For Life of Lenawee Central will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Christian Family Centre park. We would like to extend a special invitation to all cancer survivors, including those who are currently battling the disease. Cancer survivors and their caregivers are our guests of honor and are treated to special activities throughout the event. In addition to raising money and celebrating life, every American Cancer Society Relay For Life also has a wealth of information available about cancer prevention, early detection and patient services found in your community. Relay For Life is the way Lenawee Communities comes together to fight cancer on all fronts. Come and show your support for the American Cancer Society, celebrate our many victories over cancer, and get the encouragement of a community that is behind you as you continue down your path of survivorship. For more information about the survivor activities at the Relay For Life nearest you, contact your American Cancer Society 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.relayforlife.org. Esther Myers Relay for Life volunteer survivor chairperson Support Dillon health plan To the editor, The only way out of Michigan’s budget crisis is to reform and reduce state government, not hike taxes during a recession as was done two years ago. Are some Lansing politicians waking-up to this reality? The state Senate has passed a series of budget cuts and state House Republicans recently released a budget plan with detailed cuts and no tax increases. Democratic House Speaker Andy Dillon has proposed $900 million in annual savings by reforming the health insurance benefits of all state and local government workers, including public school employees. Unfortunately, Governor Granholm continues to be a roadblock to reform and offers nothing but criticism of plans from both parties. Instead of pay-offs to her supporters in the public employee unions, the Governor needs to consider the rest of Michigan and the economic pain we are going through. Roger LeMoyne Hall

Thursday, August 6, 2009 3:08 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Roger LeMoyne Hall, 69, of rural Branch County passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009 at Borgess Medical Center. Roger was born in his parents' house on the corner of Fremont and Brown Road. He and his parents Lyle and Opal, and elder siblings Carolyn and Gary were a farming family. He attended Brown School, a few steps from his home and completed his education at Quincy High School, graduating in 1957. After farming for several years with his family, he and his brother bought their grandparents' farm on Copeland Road in 1962. During this time, he also served his community in both the Michigan National Guard and the Branch County Sheriff's Auxiliary. In 1966, he married Charlene Wright of Coldwater. In 1970, they were blessed with the birth of their son Brian. Roger and Charlene spent many happy years in pursuit of mutual interests: hiking, camping, gardening, and appreciation of natural beauty. Chief among these were their Alaska adventure, and the yearly hike to the summit of Mount LeConte in the Smoky Mountains. In 1987, he began pursuit of one of his lifelong passions: classic aviation. No modern aircraft for Roger — it had to be wood and fabric construction. After diligent study, he earned a recreational pilot's license and purchased a homebuilt aircraft. When he first laid eyes on the craft, he was struck by its F.A.A. registration number, N62H since '62 was the year he purchased his farm, and 'H' was for ‘Hall,’ he knew this was the aircraft for him. Roger is survived by his wife Charlene, son Brian of Ann Arbor, sister Carolyn (Anthony) Stempien, brother Gary (Maria) Hall, and several nieces and nephews. A gathering of friends will be held Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, from 6-8 p.m. at Gillespie Funeral Home. Donations may be made in Roger's name to the Great Smoky Mountains Association at www.smokiesinformation.org.
