COMMENTARY: Teens can effect community change

Saturday, August 22, 2009 3:00 PM - Dan Cherry

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” To me, this quote attributed to Mahatma Gandhi speaks volumes. As a writer of local history books, I encounter people who reminisce on “how things used to be” and the desire for long-discontinued events to return. And that’s where the conversation usually stops. Wishing things to be a part of our lives almost never gets them accomplished. I hear similar remarks every time I give talks to area students about northwestern Lenawee County history. “Wow, this area used to be really cool,” I hear over and over. “Why doesn’t anybody do anything like that anymore?” My response to that is usually, “It takes people like yourselves to band together and make cool things happen. Think of what can happen if each of you gives one hour a week to community service, an after-school club or youth group. Whether you’re 7 or 18, you can help make a difference. You can be a part of the very thing you wish to have happen.” I find myself stressing the point that organizing festivals, community activities and the like is not limited to seasoned members of the community. It’s been my observation that most of the younger generation feel their voice does not count, that they cannot make a difference. It has been a part of my mission throughout the years as a 4-H leader and youth group helper to turn that misconception around. Walking the streets of Addison’s 175th birthday celebration Aug. 8, it was clear the kids were enjoying being a part of a community celebration, the likes of which they had not see in their lifetime. And many were talking about ideas they wanted to do for “next time.” Now that they had been a part of a large-scale event like those they had only read about in history books, they were pumped about jumping on board. To me, that was inspiring. Many of them expressed interest in having something to do in town, and took it upon themselves to help make it happen. Addison junior high student Cedric Brown was a part of the 175th birthday planning committee, bringing ideas to the meetings, including having local celebrities go before the public in a dunk tank. It seemed as if every time I turned around, Addison High School junior Travis Bales-Haldane was working hard on behalf of the Panther Marching Band’s fundraising efforts and encouraging people to participate in the festival’s rubber duck race. Addison senior Abby Gray’s thoughts on having regular small-scale events to make local communities  sought-out destinations were refreshing. She said as the town celebration concluded it was important that “we” — her generation — need to help develop and maintain events that help bring the community closer together. “I think the students, especially the high school students, should be involved in putting (a community event) together,” she said. More often than not, in order to make things happen, the sleeves that need to be rolled up are yours. Dan Cherry is a Daily Telegram staff writer. Harry Dale Reber

Harry Dale Reber Harry Dale Reber died peacefully at home on August 18, 2009, with loved ones at his bedside. He was born in Fremont, Michigan, in 1918. He attended Fremont High School and graduated from Harvard in 1940. Thereafter, Harry joined the Navy and was sent to the South Pacific at the beginning of WWII. He was recognized for his heroic actions as an officer on the naval destroyer USS Little as it was sunk in the battle of Guadalcanal. He then became a naval aviator, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During this time he was stationed in South Carolina and it was here he married his sweetheart of seven years, Mary Lowery, in 1944. After the war, Harry went to the University of Michigan Law School before returning to his hometown to join his father in Reber and Reber, Attorneys at Law. Harry enjoyed his years in Fremont, practicing law, raising a family, and contributing to the community with his work on the school board and other local organizations. Here, he developed a passion for the game of golf and the camaraderie it cultivated with his fellow golfing buddies. Harry and Mary had many friends in Fremont and were involved in many social activities, more often than not revolving around the game of golf. In 1986, Harry and Mary retired to Green Valley, Arizona, where golf, that had been his passion, became Harry's lifestyle. Harry and Mary traveled frequently and far and also enjoyed being with family and friends. In 2002, Harry and Mary moved to Okemos, Michigan to live with their daughter and her children who were grateful to care for them to the end. Harry valued his role as provider. He provided a good life for his wife and family, but more than that, he provided a high standard of integrity and conviction for those who knew him. Harry now joins his loving wife, Mary who preceded him in death by a few short months. He is survived by his three children, Cynthia Reber, Polly Reber, and John Reber, his daughter-in-law Julia Reber; his seven grandchildren, Dan Leaman, Nathan Leaman, Libby Leaman, Stephen Reber, Emily Reber, Harrison Reber, Benza Maman; and his two sisters, Nancy Johnson and Marjorie Salata, and his brother-in-law Ted Johnson. On Sunday, August 30th, friends are invited to join the Reber family in Fremont as they gather at the Maple Grove Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. and immediately following at the Gerber Guest House for a Celebration of Harry and Mary.
