Anthony Kerrigan "Tony"

Anthony (Tony) Kerrigan, 81, of Fearrington Village, NC passed away on August 6th after a long struggle with emphysema. Tony, the son of Arthur and Edith Kerrigan, grew up in Katonah, NY and was educated at Phillips Andover Academy and Yale University '50. He was proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps and saw combat in Korea. Later he joined Merrill Lynch where he worked in Sales and then as a Floor Broker on the American and New York Stock Exchanges. Sensing the beginning of a seismic shift in the moral compass of Wall Street, Tony opted for early retirement. As a trustee of the Darrow School he was instrumental in building Alumni participation in school affairs and the success of its endowment fund. Tony, a voracious reader, was happiest when delving into volumes of history, politics, religion and everything else that piqued his interest. Always eager to share his books, he dubbed his book shelves "Kerrigan's Lending Library". He also was an avid gardener and greatly enjoyed cheering on his sons' efforts on the Soccer and Lacrosse fields when they were young. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Fearrington Village; sons, Geoffrey and Timothy, both of Portland, OR, and his beloved dog and friend, Willow. A celebration of Tony's life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to: UNC Hospice, P.O. Box 1007, Pittsboro, NC 27312; Duke Hospice, 1001 Corporate Drive, Hillsborough, NC 27278. Arrangements made by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas. On-line condolences may be left at

Arthurs, Lander Blair "Andy"*

LANDER BLAIR "ANDY" ARTHURS Andy Arthurs, 79, died on Saturday, August 8th, 2009 at Cypress Pointe Rehab and Healthcare, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. He passed away peacefully and has gone to join his brothers and sisters who have passed before him. Somewhere in heaven there's a party going on this week. He was born on March 2nd, 1930, during a late blizzard in Gaston County, North Carolina, the son of the late Hope and Nancy Arthurs. Andy was the third of nine children in the Arthurs' family. He was preceded in death by his sisters Nancy Fox and Jo Ann U'ren and his brothers Johnny, Jim, Mike and Floyd. Mr. Arthurs served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II. He was in the Pacific Theater serving with VMF-218 on Guam and later in China. He was proud of his service and was always quick to throw in a "Semper Fi" or "Once a Marine, always a Marine" whenever needed. His stories from the war and life in the Marine Corps were a source of many hours of entertainment to his children, grandchildren and friends. After returning from the war, Andy spent years helping to take care of his mother and younger siblings. He worked in the insulation business and traveled the southeast following the insulating jobs available. During the 1950's he worked on the de-salinization plant at Wrightsville Beach and fell in love with the beach and the ocean. Andy moved to Wrightsville Beach in 1970 with his family and started L.B. Arthurs Insurance Agency. Throughout the 70's and 80's he could be seen fishing for spots in the Intracoastal or flounder in Masonboro Inlet or trolling for King's off the boxcars. In his later years he rekindled a passion for golf and, until his disease prevented it, could be seen at Muni, Duck Haven or Old Fort chasing bogies and pars. He played many rounds with his good friends on the "Crow-bear Tour." Andy was an accomplished musician who had mastered the guitar, dobro, banjo and harmonica and if you were around the Arthurs' house on a Saturday night you'd hear him singing and playing. Throughout most of the 80's you could find him playing shuffleboard on Friday nights down at Kefi's, coaching the younger players with tips like "Don't be scared of the end, son!" or "We've got 'm blocked out now!" Andy was a gregarious man with many friends and eccentricities. He was known by many nicknames: Andy or L.B. to most people, "The Old Irishman" to his son's college buddies, "Pops" to his son and grandchildren and "The Colonel" to his drinking, golfing and shuffleboard buddies down at Kefi's. He was an avid fan of the N.C. State Wolfpack, NASCAR racing and PGA Golf. Often wrong, but never in doubt, he would give you his last dollar if you needed it. He was the most generous person you'd ever meet. Mr. Arthurs was always a kind and caring father. He never missed a football game, he was never too busy to go fishing, throw the baseball or sneak off for 18 holes of golf. All he asked in return was to get him a beer every now and then or listen to him play the guitar. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Purser Arthurs of Gastonia, his son and daughter-in-law Brandon Blair and Michelle Smith Arthurs of Wilmington, his sisters Jean Champion of Gastonia and Betty Bettex of Greenville, SC, grand-daughters Grayson and Delaney Arthurs of Wilmington and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held on at 11AM, Thursday, August 13th at Oleander Memorial Gardens. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Romano Family and the entire wonderful staff at Sherwood Manor, Dr. Mary Rudyk and staff, and the entire staff at Cypress Pointe Rehab and Healthcare. They have treated Mr. Arthurs with respect, kindness and patience during a very difficult time in his life. In lieu of flowers, raise a toast to the Colonel and play a round of golf with your friends or go fishing with your children, or make a donation in his name to: , 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633; tel: 312.335.870; www.alz.org Online condolences at StarNewsOnline.com

Bamford, Dana Freeman

will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday August 13 at First Presbyterian Church for family and friends. He was born in Augusta, Me on April 1, 1930 and was the child of Sherman R. and Ellen G. Bamford. He is preceded in death by his father Sherman Bamford and his mother Ellen Bamford Buck. He is survived by his wife Ruth Shelburne Bamford; son Sherman R. Bamford II of Roanoke, VA; daughter Martha B. Mikkelson and husband Steve; and grandchildren Khean, Samuel, and Ellen Mikkelson of Roanoke, VA. He is also survived by members of his extended family: Dr. Palmer and Mrs. Julie Shelburne of Greensboro; Mary Helen Watkins of Durham; David and Ursula Goodine of Medford, MA; Beverly and Louis Beck of Hawley, PA; Terry Goodine of Newington,CT; four nieces and nephews; and 10 grandnieces and grandnephews. Known always for his generous spirit, unfailing optimism, and sense of humor, Dana was an inspiration to many people. He grew up in Bucksport, Maine, a small town on the Penobscot River a few miles inland from the coast. It was during these early years that his strong work ethic arose. When he was only 14 years old, his father died unexpectedly. He and his mother then worked together to provide for themselves and for his future education. From Bucksport, he went on to Springfield College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree, and to the University of Iowa, where he earned a Masters of Arts degree in Hospital Administration. During his life, he had four significant careers. During the Korean War era, he served the Army Medical Corps at a rehabilitation hospital in Germany. Soon afterwards, he worked at a high school in Long Island, New York, in the role of a teacher, coach, and athletic director. It was here that he met his wife Ruth. Afterwards, he served as a healthcare chief executive officer for community-owned and church-owned hospitals. For 23 years, the greater part of his working life, he held leadership positions for hospitals in the states of Illinois, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. He then served many years as the administrator for First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. His accomplishments include serving as the project manager for four major hospital construction projects and two major church renovation projects; serving on the board of trustees of the North Carolina Hospital Association; and receiving the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the Governor of North Carolina, awarded for his faithful work on the drug commission of the state. He also contributed greatly to church and civic organizations in each of the towns and cities where he lived. He served on the Budget and Finance Committee of the Salem Presbytery and on a church board of deacons. He influenced the lives of many young boys as a Boy Scout leader and coach of baseball and basketball teams. He served as the president of a local Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the board of directors of a local YMCA and a local Parent Teacher Association. Always interested in people, upon his retirement, one of his greatest avocations was international travel and cultural exchanges. He also enjoyed returning to his home state of Maine and traveling to the coast of North Carolina with his wife as often as he could. But his greatest love was time spent with his family - his wife, his children, and his three grandchildren. Fittingly, last August, he and wife Ruth had joyously celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with the entire family gathered for an active week at a quiet mountain resort. The family would like to sincerely thank Duke University Hospital, Duke Oncology Department, Wesley Long Oncology Department, and all hospice providers for the love and care given to Dana. In lieu of flowers, memorials or contributions may be given to Greensboro Urban Ministry, Salvation Army, or special interests of one's own choice. Offer your condolences at www.news-record.com/obituraries.
