He was eventually assigned to the 351st Infantry Regiment of the 88th Division in May of 1944 and participated in the liberation of Italy from the Nazi invasion. In July of the same year he assumed command of L Company during the battle of Laiatico. After the two other rifle companies of the 3rd Battalion had been rendered incapable of combat by the enemy he led his company in a night attack resulting in the capture of over 200 German soldiers without a single casualty to his men. This action decided the battle and the 3rd Battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its outstanding performance — the equivalent of every man in the unit receiving the Distinguished Service Cross. Eventually attaining the rank of major, he served in the Korean Military Advisory Group during the Korean War and was commander of Fulda Post, Germany, from January 1957 to August 1958. After a career that spanned 20 years he retired from active military duty on Oct. 31, 1959, at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind. In 1963 he graduated from Western Michigan University with a masters degree in guidance and counseling. He later settled in Hillsdale, Michigan where he served as high school guidance counselor from 1966 to 1976 and was a well-known fixture in the community for the remainder of his life. An avid barbershop singer and 35-year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society he sang with the Hudson, Coldwater and Jackson chapters before helping to found the Hillsdale chapter. He is survived by Frances (Ford) Tipton, his wife of 43 years; three children: Sharon Tipton of Kalamazoo; David (Ellen) Tipton of Battle Creek; and Matthew (Josie) Tipton of Sterling Heights; Seven granddaughters: Arrow Tipton; Erin Tipton; Emily (Ian) Bobinac; Sara Tipton; Abigail Tipton; Gwendolyn Tipton; and Meredith Tipton; two great-granddaughters and a great-grandson; a brother: Lemuel Ray (Jean) Tipton of Dry Ridge, Ky.; a beloved niece: Jean Ann (Mark) Powell of Walton, Ky.; two grand-nieces: Rachel and Ashlynn Powell. He was preceded in death by a son: Michael Tipton (2009); and a brother: Denville Tipton (1945). Funeral services for Roy Tipton will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at the VanHorn-EagleFuneral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Ned Wyse officiating. Philip George King or “Flip” a loving son, brother, uncle, great uncle and friend, was born Feb. 23, 1962, in Sturgis, and passed away in Jan. 1, 2010 in St. Joseph. Philip was the “Michael Jackson” of the family. He was exotic, unpredictable, and humorous with a “twist.” He was also very intelligent, talented and good- natured. Philip grew up in Sturgis. He loved the stage and often joined his parents, George and Phyllis King, in productions with Sturgis Civic Players. As a youngster, Philip, perfected the art of magic and loved to dazzle his friends and family with his magic shows. While his sisters, Paula and Angela, were raising their families in Okemos and Portage, respectively, Philip made a special effort to bond with all of his nephews and nieces. Never losing his own inner child, he had an innate ability to connect and relate to them. He was not just their beloved uncle, he was their friend. Entertaining them and spending time with them was never a “chore” but something he sincerely loved. He will be profoundly missed by his sisters’ children. When Philip reached adulthood, he moved to New York City and later to Chicago. He loved the adventure and romance of “The Big Apple” and the “Windy City.” When he finally got homesick, he moved back to Michigan. His legacy from the big cities was his experience with delicious food. Philip became a master at creating and reproducing exquisite cuisine, which he would plan and prepare to the delight of his family during the holidays. Each year, he would surprise and enchant his family with a culinary adventure we had never experienced before. Philip knew that preparing a sensational dinner was more than cooking food to perfection; it was also about presentation, and he was an absolute artist. Philip had a talent for entertaining his family with subtle and ironic humor. He could see our flaws as well as our strengths and make fun of how seriously we took ourselves. He would tell it like it is and encouraged the rest of us to do so. We loved him for his honesty. Philip was a warrior. He fought difficult battles the likes of which few of us could ever comprehend. Even the most valiant among us can succumb to the ravages of disease but it makes us no less courageous. Philip fought the good fight. He will be in our hearts forever. Philip passed away in the home and loving care of his father, George King. George has been the source of strength and substance in sustaining Philip and our family during this difficult time. He is a man of enormous compassion and spiritual fortitude. Philip is survived by his father and mother, George and Phyllis King; two sisters, Paula Zang and her husband, Paul Zang, and Angela Young and her husband, Russell Young; his nephews and nieces, Nathaniel Moleski, Katie Love and her husband Michael Love, Daniel Moleski, Eric Zang, and Anna Zang; and his grandnephew, Tyler Moleski and grandnieces, Audrey and Delaney Love. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, with Fr. Dan Scheid officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice at Home.  Those wishing to sign the memory book online may do so at  www.starks-menchinger.com. |

Robert Murfin, 82 died suddenly, yet peacefully, while making his final inspection of the Branch County Memorial Airport that he loved so dearly. Bob was born June 3, 1927 in Branch County. He was the only child and son of William L Murfin and Q. Victoria (Minniear) Murfin who preceded him in death in 1964 and 1970 respectively. Before being called into the Army in 1946, where he became a Sergeant and communications repairman, he married the beautiful Kathryn I. Sprowl in Angola.  Together, they shared 63 years of life and five children, who survive. Bob was well known for his unequaled, genius abilities in mechanical repair, machining and engineering. After serving in the Army, Bob worked in several automobile dealerships in Coldwater and Arnold Auto Parts for many years, before opening Murfin’s Auto Repair. He became fascinated with radio controlled airplanes and enjoyed flying with other enthusiasts. He found his true passion and calling when he built his first Gyrocopter in the early 70’s. He was well known and participated in flying, teaching and the conversion of engines for Gyrocopter use. He made his last flight just a few weeks prior to this writing. He passed his skills and knowledge to others who belonged to the Rotor-craft Club. He was a charter member of Maumee Valley Rotor-craft Club #70. He was also a member of several other clubs and organizations. Bob was the Branch County Memorial Airport Manager for several years. Although he gave up his formal position to retirement, he remained active in maintenance and caretaking of the airport grounds. He dedicated himself to upholding all safety guidelines for all airport traffic. He immersed himself in aeronautics and was routinely called as a consultant in many airplane related crashes. Wilma Plummer, 89, formerly of Belle Center, passed away Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, at her son’s residence in Flower Mound, Texas. Born April 28, 1920, the daughter of the late Lafayette and Bertie (Swartz) Markley. She was a hard worker at DAB in Bellefontaine, the community, and on the family farm, that was passed on to all of us. She graduated from Blume High School in Wapakoneta, Ohio. She married Thurman Plummer Sept. 6, 1942. With hope, humility, and laughter (yes especially loving to laugh), they grew in confidence and work ethic, giving birth to three sons, Don, Eldon, and Doug. They were proud of their boys. They wanted nothing but happiness for them. The boys grew up on the family farm where Dad and Mom taught responsibility, loving, giving, caring, ethics, etc. Their boys went on to become successful men, all graduating from The Ohio State University, marrying and having their own children. Mom and Dad loved their eight, really nine, grandchildren. This brought them their ultimate fulfillment in life. They accomplished their dream. Mom lost her friend and our Dad Feb. 16, 1995. Her biggest tragedy was the loss of her second son, Eldon, on March 23, 1999. He is survived by Janice, his wife, and their three children, Nathan, Melissa and Brian and their families. They all gave of their time while Mom lived in Bellefontaine. This day is a day of happiness to re-unite with her son Eldon and our Dad in heaven. Mom lived her last few years in Texas with her youngest son Doug and his wife Angie. Their children are Job, Cassie and Ashton. Amber, Job’s fiancée, also has a special place in Mom’s heart. Angie and Doug were with Mom in her bed until her last breath. Don is single, semi-retired and continues to enjoy life in Hillsdale. His two daughters, Amanda and Lynn Ann, live in the Chicago area. Wilma is also survived by two sisters, Pauline Thompson of Bradenton, Florida and Irene Sidener of Cridersville, Ohio. Our Mom…she was there for us during our times of joy and pain, she healed our cuts and scrapes, she saw us through our achievements and disappointments, our Mom fed us, bathed us, she gave us happiness. Our Mom served the church and the community. She was active in the United Methodist Church in Belle Center. She enjoyed preparing meals for the church and Kiwanis. She served on the Huntsville Grange. We had many Thanksgivings and Christmases at Mom’s family of two brothers and four sisters. Mom enjoyed family gatherings especially when cooking and baking was involved. We celebrate this life of Wilma Plummer. She accomplished what she set out to: fulfilling her dreams and established a heritage of dreams in people she touched. She has found peace in God. She has started her everlasting life with Christ. Mom would have wanted us to say special thanks for the help and support of Mercy Hospice (especially our Nurse Andrea) and Dr. M Patel for their compassionate and caring ways that guided us so we could bring her home and care for her. We could not have accomplished this without their support. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31 at the Belle Center United Methodist Church, 101 S. Center St., Belle Center, Ohio 43310, with Pastor Kevin Smith officiating. Friends may call from 2 -4 and 6 -8 p.m. Tuesday at the Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine, Ohio. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Hospice of Hillsdale County. Condolences to the family may be expressed at: www.eichholtzfuneralhome.com. |
