Debra Dianne Buchman, age 58, died of cancer on Jan. 22, 2010. She was born on July 12, 1951, to Lucille (Baldwin) and William Path. She graduated from Bowsher High School and the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing.  She began her nursing career in the Operating Room at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind.  She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Magna Cum Laude, from Indiana State University and taught nursing there for one year. She married William “Chip” Buchman, the love of her life, on May 10, 1975. She taught nursing at Toledo Hospital before earning a master’s degree in nursing with a geriatric specialty from the University of Michigan. She was inducted into the U of M Rho Chapter of the International Nursing Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau. She began teaching at what was then the Medical College of Ohio School of Nursing. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in Education Research and Measurement from the University of Toledo and worked in the quality management department at Medical College of Ohio Hospital before returning to teaching and research as a biostatistician. Debra received Dean’s Awards for both teaching and research. She was professor and director of the Center for Nursing Research and Evaluation at the UT College of Nursing and taught in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program. While working as a graduate assistant at UT in 1990, Debra was fortunate to meet Jeanne Brockmyer (Funk) who served as her mentor and research partner for more than 20 years.  Together, they published a number of articles and made national and international presentations about the effect of violent video games on children’s self-esteem and empathy. Debra also had research interests in patient safety and reducing errors in healthcare settings. Debra was a member of the Ohio and American Nurses Association, and the Midwest Nursing Research Society. She served on the advisory boards for the UT Center for Successful Aging and the Resident Services Board for Sunset Communities. She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Sylvania and a facilitator for the Cancer Prayer Support Group where she worked with the Comfort Blanket Ministry, and served on the Health Cabinet as advisor to the Parish Nurse Program. Debra enjoyed playing golf at Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Fairfield Glade, Tenn., with longtime friends Mark and Jane Maley. She was a past member of Lenawee Country Club in Adrian, Mich., and Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania. She loved to read and create beautiful counted cross stitch samplers for friends and family. Debra wanted to be remembered as a kind and loving person who always tried to do her best and was grateful for the many blessings in her life. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Chip; son David; parents; sister, Lauren; many aunts, uncles, cousins; and a host of friends and colleagues who supported her in so many ways during her final illness. Special thanks to Cheryl Gies, Kay Korthuis, Jo Schwartzberg, Jeanne Brockmyer, Sue Cutshall, Fr. Ron Schock and the members of the Cancer Prayer Support Group. Also thanks to the faculty of the College of Nursing, Dean Timothy Gaspar and former Dean Jeri Milstead who could not have been kinder. Debra’s family is especially grateful for the compassionate care provided by medical and nursing staff of UTMC and Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Scripture Service at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Road). A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 5373 Main St., Sylvania, OH 43560 with interment following at Toledo Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to The Heart to Heart Program (University of Toledo College of Nursing) or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.   |

Dylan Blaize Hackworth, 15, of Homer, formerly of Lugoff, S.C., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010 at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. He was born May 16, 1994 in Marshall to Ralph “Ed” and Rebecca Marie (Moor) Hackworth. Dylan was a ninth grade student at Homer High School and a member of the Spanish Club. He enjoyed skate boarding, music and drawing. He was loved and will be missed. Elaine S. Cerra Elaine S. Cerra (Szatkowski), age 53, of Spring Hill, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the HPH Hospice Care Center in Brooksville, Florida after a prolonged battle with cancer. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Ms. Cerra grew up in Roseville and later resided in Warren, Michigan. After many years of working for a Ford Motor Company vendor in Livonia, Michigan, Ms. Cerra relocated to Spring Hill, Florida in August of 2006. She enjoyed collecting dolls, ceramics, antique shopping, interior decorating, building puzzles, spending her time at home with Kevin Marsh (her beloved boyfriend of more than three years), and taking short trips on motorcycles. She also enjoyed her very close relationships with her mother, her nine siblings, and her son Anthony, for whom she worked many long hours to ensure that he would have a bright future and a fresh start with her in Florida.She was a tremendous mother and a family favorite who was loved by all. Ms. Cerra was raised Catholic as the 4th of 10 children in the Szatkowski family: Karen DeNault (Donald), Gary Szatkowski, Janet Meyer, Lawrence Szatkowski (Carol), Kenneth Szatkowski (Vicki), James Szatkowski (Dottie), Robert Szatkowski, Daniel Szatkowski (Stephanie), and David Szatkowski (Frankie). Ms. Cerra was predeceased by her father, Tony Szatkowski (1992). She is survived by her son, Anthony P. Cerra of Inverness, Florida (formerly of Warren, Michigan); boyfriend, Kevin Marsh of Spring Hill, Florida; mother Therese Carol Szatkowski (Arthur Cipriano); nine brothers and sisters; and several nieces, nephews, and related family members. Houseknecht, 67, of Scipio Township, passed away Friday Jan. 15, 2010,  at the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor.  He was born Aug. 10, 1942, in Detroit to Frederick E. and Rachael (Coriell) Houseknecht.  Fred graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1964 and served in the U. S. Army.  He retired from Clark Equipment Co. where he had worked 10 years.  On Jan. 7, 1977, he married Emma (Signor) and she preceded him in death in 1992. Survivors include his longtime companion, Tina Church; two sisters,  Ellen (Clarence) Conklin, Jonesville and Joan (Hugh) Conklin, Jonesville; two brothers, Philip Houseknecht, Jonesville and  Jim (Jean) Potter, Jonesville. He was also preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Jack C. Henry, 76, of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.  He was born April 17, 1933 in Shiloh, Mich., to Carl John and Bessie (Lowe) Henry.  He was married Oct. 27, 1979 to Ann Mygrant and she survives. Jack was a retired pharmacist and the previous owner and operator of H.S. Pharmacy in Hillsdale from 1958-1974.   He retired from the Department of Licensing and Regulation for State of Michigan.  Jack was a member of the tax review board for Hillsdale Township for several years.  He previously headed the cancer drive for the Hillsdale County, American Cancer Society.  He served on various pharmaceutical associations.  Jack was an avid fisherman and hunter.  He collected antique vases and loved gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother. James E. Yoder, 82 of Sturgis, Mich., and Weslaco, Texas, passed away Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, surrounded by his family at the Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. He was born Aug. 11, 1927, in Nottawa, Mich., a son to the late Ernest and Lovina (Eicher) Yoder. Jim resided in the Sturgis area most of his life. In 1950 he married Jackie Bowen. She preceded him in death on March 23, 1999. On Sept. 25, 2005, he married Mary Reed. He was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952 during the Korean War stationed at Fort Bragg North Carolina. Following his honorable discharge from the Army he and Jackie returned to Sturgis and resided there and raised their family. Following their retirement he and Jackie began spending their winters in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Jim and Mary were currently living in Sturgis and also Winter Texans in Weslaco. In the 1950s and ’60s he was a member of many championship fast pitch softball teams. He was a very talented southpaw first baseman. Jim continued his love of sports encouraging and cheering loudly at his sons athletic events. For many years he umpired Little League Majors baseball games in Sturgis. He loved to run the two lane roads while traveling and took Mary down some interesting roads. Jim was always willing to give of his time to help others and had volunteered at Thurston Woods Village and was a driver for the American Cancer Society in the Valley. He attended the Locust Grove Mennonite Church in Burr Oak. His care and compassion for all his family and friends will be greatly missed but he loved the Lord and has gone home in victory. He would want us to celebrate his life. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Mary; one daughter, Linda (Doug) Large of Sturgis; five sons, Doug (Sue) Yoder of Austin, Texas, Bob (Marilee) Yoder of Sturgis, Steve (his friend Sheryl Putnam) Yoder of Sturgis, Stan (Vicki) Yoder of White Pigeon, Tim (his fiancée Vicky Singleton) Yoder of Sturgis; one step-son, Jeff Moline of Garita, New Mexico; two step-daughters, Michelle (Scott) Carr of Sturgis and Alecia Frutig of LaGrange, Ind.; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ellen Schragg of Kalamazoo and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death parents; wife; two sisters,  Lena Reed and Barb Weber; and one brother, Ernest Yoder. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of James Yoder will be announced at a later date. The Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Rosenberg Chapel of Sturgis is handling the arrangements. Jannette E. Griesinger, 86, of Coldwater, formerly of Dimondale, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010 at the Community Health Center of Branch Country from a massive stroke. She was born Dec. 22, 1923 in Lansing to Royal and Iva Slack. Mrs. Griesinger graduated from Lansing Central High School and attended Lansing Business College. She was married in 1952 to Richard Griesinger. After 39 years of service, she retired from Michigan National Bank as Assistant Vice President and was one of the first two female bank officers. Mrs. Griesinger was a member of Zonta International and Easter Star. After retirement, Mrs. Griesinger spent winters in Florida until moving to their lake home in Coldwater. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Richard; two step-daughters, Cheryl (Gerald) Brauer and Susan Silvers and her late husband, Reid; two grandchildren, Annie (Clay) Wulliman and Nathan (Natalee) Davenport; one great-granddaughter, Abbie Elizabeth Thacher; three brothers; one sister; and many beloved nieces and nephews. John Henry Peebles, of San Rafael, Calif., passed away Monday, Jan.11, 2010, at the age of 94. He was born Jan. 2, 1916 ,in Hudson, MI, the fourth child of four, to Willis Peebles and Nellie (Hawkins) Peebles.  John grew up on a farm in Hudson and his uncle had one of the few trucks around at the time.  He graduated from Hillsdale College with an accounting degree. John flew 30 missions over Europe as a navigator in B-24s and received the Distinguished Flying Cross.  He met his future wife, Patricia Boyd, at Steel Products in Hillsdale and they were married on Feb. 10, 1945.  They took a trip across the northern states of the United States and settled in Torrance, Calif., where they had friends from Michigan.  They moved to Temple City in 1951 where they lived until 2007 when they moved to San Rafael to be near their daughter and her family.  His son and his family still live in Temple City.  John started working for Southern Counties Gas Co.,in 1948 and retired as supervisor of disbursements in Accounting. At that time he went to work in Pat's travel agency. John was very active with Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and was assistant manager and manager for many years.  He was also active in Kiwanis. He had great pride and joy in his three grandchildren.  He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His wife of 64 years, Pat, preceded his death last June.  He is survived by his son, Frederick (Vivian) Peebles of Temple City; his daughter Mary (James) Adams of San Rafael; grandchildren, Whitney Peebles, Julie Jacobson, James Adams, and great-grandson, Wes Peebles; as well as nephews and a niece and their families. Funeral services for John Henry Peebles will be at 11a.m. Monday, at the Van Horn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Terry Bobzien officiating.  Internment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jefferson Township.  The family will receive friends for visitation from 3-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. John 'Jack' Prieskorn John "Jack" Prieskorn, age 78, of Chesterfield Township died January 23, 2010. John was born August 8, 1931 in Detroit, a son of Elmer and Edna (nee Steinke) Prieskorn. Jack served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On February 10, 1951, Jack married Frances Hicks at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lenox, where he was a lifelong member. Jack was a former drywall taper, loved his family, outdoor yard work, landscaping, nature, animals and birdhouses. Patriotism was very important to Jack and he proudly flew his U.S. flag every day. Jack is survived by his wife, Frances; daughter, Helen (Tony Walters) Long of Harrison Twp.; grandsons, Richard Long and Bill Walters; twin sister, Mickey Sawitzky of Almont; and sisters-inlaw, Verna Mayer of New Haven, Barbara Prieskorn of Macomb and Faye Prieskorn of PA. Joy Lee Ferguson, age 70, of Cement City passed away on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at her home. She was born on Feb. 28, 1939, in Milford, Iowa to Elmer B. and Gretchen L. (Bates) Van der Aarde. She married Robert E. Ferguson on Nov. 5, 1997, in Somerset. He survives. Joy was raised in Spencer, Iowa, where she attended Spencer High School. In 1973, she married Larry Schlicht. They resided in Sac City, Iowa, where Joy worked as a controller for Noble Manufacturing, a division of Lear Siegler. They later moved to Minnesota where Joy sold toy farm equipment. She invented tire chains for toy tractors, forming her own company, Craftsmanship Unlimited. It is the only known company of its kind. All her life, Joy loved to cook. Coming from a family of diabetics, she was a strong advocate for diabetes detection. It was natural then, that she created the diabetic cookbook, Living with Diabetes, for the Interlake Lions Club, where she was an active member. The book was well received and went on to be the only known diabetic cookbook to be published in Braille. It is registered with the Library of Congress. Joy enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, and genealogy. Joy was a regular vendor at area flea markets where she and Robert sold baked goods, handcrafted items, and old records. She was a member of the Somerset Congregational Church. Surviving Joy are four sons, Timothy Schlicht of Van Nuys, Calif., Shane Schlicht of Sac City, Iowa, Kevin (Evelyn) Ferguson of Cement City; David (Wendie) Ferguson of Bentonville, Ark., one daughter, Christine (David) Knox of Pittsford; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. Visitation will be held from 10 – 11 a.m. Saturday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. The family has suggested donations go to Hillsdale County Senior Services or the Somerset Congregational Church. |

Leon Blaszczyk Leon Blaszczyk, age 90, of Sterling Heights, died January 22, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital, Grosse Pointe Farms. He was born February 19, 1919 in Sluzewo, Poland, to the late Martin and Julianna Blaszczyk. Mr. Blaszczyk was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, served with the Veterans of the Polish 2nd Corps of the British 8th Army under General Wladyslaw Anders. He retired in 1984 after 33 years with Stroh's Brewery. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen, who passed away on June 28, 2009. Mary A. Schumacher, age 65, of Brooklyn passed away after a three year battle with breast cancer on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on Oct. 10, 1944, in Hillsdale, the daughter of Albert and Celia (Woodliff) Southwell.  Mary graduated from Litchfield High School and Adrian Beauty Academy.  She was a licensed cosmetologist  and cosmetology instructor.  Mary had owned and operated Tecumseh Beauty College and Adrian Beauty Academy. She worked for 22 years at GM in Tecumseh, retiring in 1988.  Mary will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mary is survived by her life partner, Jerry Bradish; one daughter, Tammy Paterson of Saline; one granddaughter, Chelsea Paterson of Saline; one grandson, Brett Paterson of Saline; stepchildren, Jay (Deanna) Bradish of Charlotte, N.C., and Jamie Bradish of Ypsilanti; and four sisters, Shirley (Jerry) Hollister of Hillsdale, Jeannette Koziol of Grass Lake, Ardella Luce of Allen, Mich., and Eithel (Bert) Nelson of Manteca, Calif. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Clinton Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Bob Riddle officiating. Mary M. Theisman, age 103, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Thursday afternoon, Jan. 21, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born Aug. 21, 1906 in Tamaroa, Ill., a daughter to the late John and Agnes (Ryterski) Kucharski. Mrs. Theisman had resided in Sturgis since 1945 coming from Three Rivers. Her early life was spent in the southern Illinois and St. Louis, Mo. area. For a time following their marriage, she and Mr. Theisman lived in Chicago, Ill. On Sept. 10, 1929, she married Lorenz Thomas Theisman in St. Louis, Mo. . He died April 29, 1989. She had been employed by AT&T as an operator in St. Louis and after moving to Chicago she continued her work with AT&T where she taught people how to use the dial telephone. Mrs. Theisman was an active member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church where she was amember of the women’s circle. She was a member of the Sturgis Women’s Club and the Sturgis Kiwaniqueens. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and playing Bridge and loved time spent with her family. She is survived by two daughters, Carol Preble of Sturgis and Joan Wing of Rockwall, Texas; five grandchildren,  Greg Wing of Texas, Mark Wing of California, Mike Wing of Texas, Kristin Crandall of Pennsylvania and Dana Dieter of Virginia; five great -grandchildren, Abigail Wing, Alan Crandall, Erin Crandall, Madeleine Wing and Jena Wing and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters. The family will receive friends from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, (269) 651-2331. The Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Mary M. Mildred L. Bowman, age 91, of Addison  passed away on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at the Hillsdale Care County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale. She was born on Oct. 13, 1918, in Medina Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, to Curtis H. and Theresa (Dillion) McKibbin. She married Maxwell J. Bowman on Jan. 16, 1938, in Addison, and he preceded her in death on June 14, 1974. Mildred graduated from Addison High School in 1937. She operated the former Bowman’s Bakery in Addison from 1938 to 1940 and then she worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti. She was a cook at Addison Community Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1988. She also was a homemaker all her life. Mildred was a member of the former Addison Methodist Church, member of the Addison Senior Citizens Center and the Carousel Club of Addison. Surviving are one son, Owen H. (Jane) Bowman of Addison; one daughter, Marlene (Paul) Gillespie of Dartown, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Juanita Jennings of North Adams; and nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell, one son, Dr. George E. Bowman, one daughter, Maxine Gerber, and one brother, Charles McKibbin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Pastor Will Snyder officiating. Norma Ann Brown, age 55, of Sturgis, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.  She was born in Three Rivers on Dec. 24, 1954, the daughter of Richard and Betty (Lytle) Brown and was a lifetime resident of St. Joseph County.  Norma graduated from Mendon High School with the Class of 1973.  For several years she worked in home health care, and was later a secretary for the Three Rivers Merchant’s Association, now known as the DDA.  She was a collector of rabbit dolls, toys, and figurines. Norma is survived by a son, Kevin Brown (Shianne) of Three Rivers; her father, Richard Brown of Centreville;  two brothers, Rick Brown, Jr. (Lynn) of Constantine and Randy Brown (Lou Ann) of Sturgis;  five nieces and nephews; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Brown in November of 2000. Rev. William Aiken Bowen, 84, of Monroe, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010 at his home. He had been in poor health since 2000 and seriously ill for five months. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Rupp Funeral Home, Inc. A memorial service will be on Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Monroe. Rev. Nancy Carle pastor of the church will officiate and Rev. James Jacobs will assist. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Sturgis. Born June 7, 1925, in Royal Oak; he was the son of William and Ruth (Aiken) Bowen. He married Roberta K. Brumbaugh on Aug. 31, 1970, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. Rev. Bowen was a graduate of Royal Oak High School, Alma College and McCormick Theological Seminary. He served in the United States Navy from July 1, 1943 to Nov. 15, 1945. A former member of Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Alma College Representative to the Maumee Valley Presbytery, Council of Churches, Maumee Valley Presbytery and a volunteer with Mercy Memorial Hospice. He served as pastor at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Milwaukee, First Presbyterian Church, Loveland, Ohio, Walnut Hills First Presbyterian Church, Cincinnati, (where he also taught New Testament Literature at University of Cincinnati), First Presbyterian Church, Hamilton, Ohio, First Presbyterian Church, Sturgis, St. Thomas Community Presbyterian Church, Utica, Mich., First Presbyterian Church, Omro, Wisc., and First Presbyterian Church Monroe from which he retired in 1991. Surviving are his wife, Roberta; children, Kathleen Bowen of Riverside, Calif., David Bowen of Phoenix, Amy (Stephen) Pace, of Monroe, Phillip (Tammy) Bowen of Toledo, Emily (Bryan) Sears of Baltimore; grandchildren, Andrew Bowen, Jarod Bowen, Rachel Pace, Rebecca Pace and William Sears. Robert August Enright Robert August "Bob" Enright, Jr., age 81, of Richmond, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 22, 2009 at home. He was born Wednesday, November 7, 1928 in Armada, the son of the late Robert and Mamie (Campbell) Enright. His marriage to Margaret Helen Pratt occurred on September 3, 1949, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Richmond. Bob served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1956. He moved to Richmond from New Haven in 1949 and worked in customer service for Detroit Edison for 41 years before retiring in 1988 due to his health. Bob was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Richmond and a member of the Rotary Club and Lions Club of Richmond. He loved to observe swans, which led to his large collection of them. Bob enjoyed antique shows and spending time with his friends. Surviving in addition to Margaret, his wife of 61 years, are a son, Robert August Enright III of Ft. Myers, Florida; and two granddaughters and a grandson-in-law, Amber and Matthew Adamczyk of Indianapolis, Indiana and Chelsea Enright of Bemidji, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by a young son, Richard "Ricky" Enright, who died in 1962. Robert F. Myers, 82, of Waldron passed away early Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 2010, at Fairlawn Haven in Archbold, Ohio. He was born Feb. 1, 1927, to the late Floyd F. and Huldah (Basinger) Myers. Robert married Joyce Gottschalk on July 14, 1951, in Angola, Ind., and she survives. Robert was a lifelong farmer and a past laborer and member of the Lauber Hill Reformed Mennonite Church since 1955. He will be sadly missed by his wife, children, and grandchildren, whom he dearly loved. Robert G. Waffle, 79, of Burlington, died Jan. 15, 2010. in Battle Creek. He was born Nov. 17, 1930 in Tekonsha to Ernest L. and Dorothy (Aldrich) Waffle. He lived and farmed in the Tekonsha area all his life. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict in a military police unit. He  served as a trustee and board member of the Tekonsha Township Board of Review and Zoning Board for several years and was a member of the Tekonsha Historical Society. He is survived by a special friend Glenna McCreery; his children and stepchildren, Kathy (Russ) Shamplo of Pittsford, Sid Waffle of Battle Creek, Marie (Thom) Hood of Battle Creek, Julie (Robert) Sizemore of Burlington, Pamela (Steve) Citowitz of Indianapolis, and Patricia (Doug) Howard of London, Ky.; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, a brother Ernie (Billie) Waffle and sisters Doris King and Vicki Enright, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Carl (Spark) Waffle and a stepson Walt Waffle. Bob raised Limousin cattle and belonged to the Michigan Limousin Assoc. and the North American Limousin Foundation. He was a former Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day Parade, was very active in community affairs, enjoyed hunting for many years with the Cliff Doolittle family in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and watching his grandchildren participate in 4-H activities. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Putnam’s of Tekonsha. Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Union Church United Church of Christ with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Robert M. Osterhout, 61, of Newman, Ga., formerly of Manitou Beach, died suddenly on Jan. 12, 2010, at his home. He was born on Sept. 19, 1948, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., to Robert F. Osterhout and Liela (LaPlaunt) Osterhout. He graduated from Onsted High School, Class of 1967, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1972 and 1974 to 1976. He also attended Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music and Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents and a younger brother, David. Surviving relatives are his stepparents, Richard and Gloria Beach of Manitou Beach; a brother, James Beach of Manitou Beach; one sister, Bonnie (Dennis) Gwinnup of St. Charles, Ill.; and two nieces, Heidi Gwinnup and Kristin Betancourt of St. Charles, Ill. Robert was a chaplain at Hartfield Atlanta International Airport. A memorial will be held at a later date at Grace Community Fellowship Church in Newman, Ga., where he was a member, and a memorial will also be held at Hartfield Atlanta International Airport on Jan. 27, 2010.   |

Robert R. Burrows, 70, of Union City, passed away at his home Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010. He was born May 13, 1939 in Coldwater, to Walter R. and Leal (Crandall) Burrows. Bob served his country in the US Army and the National Guard. He married Alice Kendall in 1959, and that marriage ended in divorce. On June 13, 1987, he married Anna L. Vorce in Union City and she survives. Bob had lived in the Coldwater and Union City area all of his life. He had been a business owner for many years specializing in trash hauling, urethane foam spraying, painting, septic business and stump grinding. He had also worked at Clark Equipment in Battle Creek for eight years. He is survived by his wife, Anna; his father, Walter R. Burrows of Coldwater; children, Merrilee (Brockton) Frank of California, Deanna S. Burrows of Homer, Roberta Hallahan of California, Lenny (Shelly) Farris of Tekonsha and Levi (Teresa) Farris of Union City; 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; siblings, Patricia (Richard) Sechrist, Marion (Jerry Latta) Smith, Carol Caison, Jerry (Martha) Burrows, and Judy (Stanley) Hawve,r all of Union City. His mother and a brother, Ralph preceded him in death. Mr. Burrows was a NASCAR fan, race car driver, collector of arrowheads and Indian items, enjoyed welding, ice fishing and his dogs. Samuel John McIntyre Samuel John McIntyre, age 88, a resident of St. Clair Shores, died peacefully on January 21, 2010. He was born on June 9, 1921 in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan. Sharonlou Marie “Gummy” Dickson, 71, of Milan, Mich., beloved mother and grandmother, died on Jan. 20, 2010. Sharon died peacefully at Grand Court of Adrian after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and her friends from Hospice. Sharon was born on Nov. 1, 1938, in Milan, Mich., to Vernon and Helen Straits. Sharon lived in Milan her entire life and worked at several factories until she became employed by Ford Motor Company in Milan in 1978. She retired in 2004. Sharon had many friends who she loved to play Bingo with, and she also loved going to the casino and playing the slots. Sharon loved to spend time with her family and was a wonderful mother and grandmother. Sharon was the type of person who was always there to help out and was always putting other people first. Sharon was preceded in death by her father, Vernon Straits; mother, Helen Straits; her sister, Jeannette Leveille; a brother who died at birth; and good friend and ex-husband, Douglas Dickson. She is survived by daughters, Deborah (Timothy) Unold, Diane (Rodney) Schroeder and Dawn Spack (David Hessler); four grandchildren, Toni, David, Kristina and James; and three great-grandchildren. Sharon had many other close friends and family who stood by her side during her illness: Lil, Rose, Irene, Gale, Danny and Shirley. Also the many friends she made at Grand Court in Adrian, including Liz, Linda, Brenda and many others whom we are very grateful for their loving care. We would also like to extend our thanks to the workers of Hospice who cared for our mother like she was their own, including  Marlene and Gretchen. Sharon donated her body to Medcure of Oregon in hopes a cure may be found for her illness. Per her request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Lenawee County. |

Sister Miriam Kahl, formerly known as Evelyn Marie Kahl, died on Jan. 20, 2010, at St. Joseph Residence in Seattle, Wash. She was 100 years of age, and in the 81st year of her religious profession: 74 years in the Dominican Sisters of Edmonds and seven years in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister Miriam was born in Seattle, Wash., to Louis and Irene (Able) Kahl. Sister graduated from Blessed Sacrament High School in Seattle, Wash., and received Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Administration from St. Teresa College in Winona, Minn. Sister spent 58 years ministering in Health Care at St. Joseph Hospital in Aberdeen, Wash., where she held the positions of Nurse, Director of Nursing and Hospital Administrator, and at St. Helen Hospital in Chehalis, Wash., where she was Nurse, Head Nurse, Superintendent and part-time Clerk of Medical Records. For five years she ministered at Providence Hospital in Chehalis, Wash., as part-time Clerk of Medical Records. Sister also spent five years ministering in education in Aberdeen and Seattle, Wash. In 2000, Sister retired to Assumption Convent in Seattle, and in 2007, moved to St. Joseph Residence in Seattle, Wash. Sister Miriam is survived by loving nieces and nephews. A Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Assumption Convent in Seattle. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered at St. Joseph Residence in Seattle at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Seattle, Wash. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hoffner, Fisher & Harvey Funeral Home of Seattle, Wash. Susan C. Seiler, 70, of Mesa, Ariz. and formerly of Coldwater, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010 with her children by her side after a short but strong fight with cancer. Susan was born on June 17, 1939 in Camden to Muriel (Dexter) Collins and Donald Collins. Susan was a lifelong resident of Coldwater until 1993 when she moved to Mesa, Ariz., where she lived out her remaining years. Susan had many jobs while in Coldwater, but loved her job the most at Pizza Hut delivering pizzas. Susan loved to go to the beach with her children and loved to lay in the warm sun and read. She also loved to drive and listen to music and she loved to listen to the Detroit Tigers on the radio. Susan loved to go with friends to the Redwood Lounge and dance. She loved to knit and do latch hook in her spare time and read newspapers and magazines. Susan was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother that will be missed severely by her family. Susan left behind brother Larry and wife Louise Collins of Coldwater and sister Mary and husband Wayne Chandler of Illinois, daughter Donna (Seiler) Smyers of Arizona, son John and wife Sherri Seiler of Arizona, son Scott Seiler of Arizona, son Nick and wife Becky Seiler of Coldwater, grandchildren Travis, Trevor, Troy, Taylor, Gabrielle, Greg, Zach, Alex, Debbie and husband Steven Randolph, and great grandchildren Anastasia, Evangeline and Luke Randolph. William H. White, age 88, of Marion, Mich., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, in the company of his family while at his daughters home in Fremont, Ind.  He was born in Sturgis on June 21, 1921, a son of John Alexander and Elizabeth Ann (Frain) White. William served his country in the U.S. Army.  On May 7, 1944 he married Emma P. Bupp in Sturgis, she preceded him in death on July 25, 2003.  William worked as a truck driver at Copeland Refrigeration in Sydney, Ohio, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and living life to its fullest. Surviving William are his daughters, Carol (Larry) Crapo of Constantine, Linda (Don) Hostetler of Sturgis, Lana (Louie) Lee of Fremont, Ind., Cathy (Gale) Daniels of Sturgis,  Penny  White of Vicksburg, Connie (Bill) McDaniel of Constantine, Bonnie Stump of Constantine; and sons  Dick (BJ) White of White Pigeon, DW (Dolores) White of Burr Oak, and Dale White of Sturgis. Also surviving are his 41 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three sisters, Katherine Nichols, Viola (White) Lucille Dunkle; three brothers, Walter White, Louis White and Charles White; daughter-in-law, Alberta White; grandson, David Keith Crapo; and his beloved dog Fluffer. Relatives and friends will be received Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at  the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday.  Interment will be in the Constantine Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to  St. Joseph County Relay for Life. William John Legumina William John Legumina, age 90, of Eastpointe, died at his home on January 7, 2010. Mr. Legumina was born October 21, 1919, in Detroit Mich. He was a retired truck driver and warehouse clerk for Eastown Distributors. William was an Army veteran of World War II. He loved sports and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Rita; children, Karen (Gary) Radtke and Diane (Gary) Banner; grandchildren, Kristen Molina, Sarah Radtke, James Radtke, Jill Messing and Andrea Banner, six great-grandchildren; sisters, Theresa Gniazdoski and Anne Dombrowski.
