She graduated from Bowsher High School and the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing.  She began her nursing career in the Operating Room at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind.  She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Magna Cum Laude, from Indiana State University and taught nursing there for one year. She married William “Chip” Buchman, the love of her life, on May 10, 1975. She taught nursing at Toledo Hospital before earning a master’s degree in nursing with a geriatric specialty from the University of Michigan. She was inducted into the U of M Rho Chapter of the International Nursing Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau. She began teaching at what was then the Medical College of Ohio School of Nursing. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in Education Research and Measurement from the University of Toledo and worked in the quality management department at Medical College of Ohio Hospital before returning to teaching and research as a biostatistician. Debra received Dean’s Awards for both teaching and research. She was professor and director of the Center for Nursing Research and Evaluation at the UT College of Nursing and taught in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program. While working as a graduate assistant at UT in 1990, Debra was fortunate to meet Jeanne Brockmyer (Funk) who served as her mentor and research partner for more than 20 years.  Together, they published a number of articles and made national and international presentations about the effect of violent video games on children’s self-esteem and empathy. Debra also had research interests in patient safety and reducing errors in healthcare settings. Debra was a member of the Ohio and American Nurses Association, and the Midwest Nursing Research Society. She served on the advisory boards for the UT Center for Successful Aging and the Resident Services Board for Sunset Communities. She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Sylvania and a facilitator for the Cancer Prayer Support Group where she worked with the Comfort Blanket Ministry, and served on the Health Cabinet as advisor to the Parish Nurse Program. Debra enjoyed playing golf at Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Fairfield Glade, Tenn., with longtime friends Mark and Jane Maley. She was a past member of Lenawee Country Club in Adrian, Mich., and Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania. She loved to read and create beautiful counted cross stitch samplers for friends and family. Debra wanted to be remembered as a kind and loving person who always tried to do her best and was grateful for the many blessings in her life. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Chip; son David; parents; sister, Lauren; many aunts, uncles, cousins; and a host of friends and colleagues who supported her in so many ways during her final illness. Special thanks to Cheryl Gies, Kay Korthuis, Jo Schwartzberg, Jeanne Brockmyer, Sue Cutshall, Fr. Ron Schock and the members of the Cancer Prayer Support Group. Also thanks to the faculty of the College of Nursing, Dean Timothy Gaspar and former Dean Jeri Milstead who could not have been kinder. Debra’s family is especially grateful for the compassionate care provided by medical and nursing staff of UTMC and Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Scripture Service at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Road). A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 5373 Main St., Sylvania, OH 43560 with interment following at Toledo Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to The Heart to Heart Program (University of Toledo College of Nursing) or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
