Barbara E. Maas Barbara E. Maas, age 80, of Shelby Township, passed away on January 19, 2010, in Crittenton Hospital, Rochester Hills. Born September 19, 1929, in Roseville, Mich. She was married to the late Lawrence Maas (1999). Children, Kirk (Kathi) Maas of Romeo, Nancy (Steve) Emery of Sterling Heights; brothers and sisters, Virginia Vreeland, Helen (Eldon) Blem, Raymond (Marlyn) Hederson, and the late Shirley Howcroft, Evelyn Bailey, Norma Horgan; three grandchildren, Kirk Douglas (Kelly) Maas, Michelle (Andrew) West, Andrea Bontumasi; two great-grandchildren, Jacob West, Madison Davis. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 62 years; 1948 graduate of Utica High School, worked for 29 years with Metropolitan Savings & Loan Bank in Utica where she worked her way up from a bank teller to a branch manager and assistant vice president; member of Utica Cemetery Association; former Board of Director with Utica Chamber of Commerce. Christopher A. Barrand Christopher A. Barrand, age 49, of Sevierville, Tenn., formerly of Ruby, Mich., died January 18, 2010, at University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn. Born March 8, 1960, in Detroit, Mich. He was an engineer for TRW and served as a military police officer in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Model Aviation Club and enjoyed building model airplanes and woodworking. He married May Ann Osmola, February 6, 1982, at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; children, Matthew and Amanda (Jason Depape); his father, Robert Barrand and siblings, Kenneth (Sandy) Barrand, Diana (Don) Patton, Deborah and Bradley Barrand; and his mother-in-law Margaret Osmola. He was predeceased by his mother, Marilyn. Edmund Joseph Hippe Edmund Joseph Hippe, age 84, of Warren, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at his home surrounded by family members. Edmund was born November 12, 1925, in Holly, Michigan the son of the late Edmund Joseph Hippe and the late Pauline (nee: Owiesny) Hippe. He was born and raised in Holly where he and his family lived on their farm. Edmund served in the Army during World War II. Edmund received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for injuries he sustained in the Philippines while in the Army. He was in the hospital for 15 months due to these injuries. He later worked for the Department of Defense where he was a missile engineer. Edmund was also very active in the VFW. He was a longtime member at Post 4404 in Hamtramck where he was the past commander and quartermaster. Most recently he was a member at the Menge Post. His interests included traveling, bowling, and the Polka Boosters. His family will always remember him as a kind and good-hearted person. He is survived by his siblings, Patricia Bagnowski, Robert (Marie Ann) Hippe, John (Diane) Hippe, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alexandra; his father, Edmund Hippe; and his mother, Pauline Owiesny, and siblings, Gloria Warden, Sylvia Lukowski, Thomas W. Hippe, Rose Nickowski, and Donald Hippe. Visitation for Mr. Hippe will be held Friday 3-9 p.m. with a 6 p.m. Scripture service at D.S. Frederick A. Houseknecht, 67, of Scipio Township, passed away Friday Jan. 15, 2010,  at the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor.  He was born Aug. 10, 1942, in Detroit to Frederick E. and Rachael (Coriell) Houseknecht.  Fred graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1964 and served in the U. S. Army.  He retired from Clark Equipment Co. where he had worked 10 years.  On Jan. 7, 1977, he married Emma (Signor) and she preceded him in death in 1992. Survivors include his longtime companion, Tina Church; two sisters,  Ellen (Clarence) Conklin, Jonesville and Joan (Hugh) Conklin, Jonesville; two brothers, Philip Houseknecht, Jonesville and  Jim (Jean) Potter, Jonesville. He was also preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment will follow in the Johnson Cemetery, Scipio Township.  Visitation is scheduled Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor or the American Cancer Society.    |

Helen Ann Sprys Helen Ann Sprys, age 86, died January 16, 2010. Beloved wife of the late Walter V. Sprys. Loving mother of Mary Ann (Joseph) Howell, Walter Patrick, Kay (Robert) Dubois, Joseph, and the late Thomas. Dearly loved by nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Helen was born in Pennsylvania, and lived most of her life in the metro Detroit area. She worked for the AT&T telephone company as a supervisor until motherhood offered her a better position. Helen was active in her children's daily lives, serving as assistant leader and volunteer with the CampFire Girls, the Cub Scouts, and the Brownies. She was an accomplished seamstress, milliner, decoupager, and knitter, choosing to dedicate those talents for the pleasure of her family. Helen enjoyed the arts, particularly museums, musical and theater performances, and church architecture. Helen loved to travel throughout the country, being particularly fond of our big cities and Hawaii. Helen was also active in her church, serving as the secretary for the Christian Mothers Society. Proud oldest sister to Eileen, Olga, Carol, and the late Julia. Special aunt to many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Jack C. Henry, 76, of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.  He was born April 17, 1933 in Shiloh, Mich., to Carl John and Bessie (Lowe) Henry.  He was married Oct. 27, 1979 to Ann Mygrant and she survives. Jack was a retired pharmacist and the previous owner and operator of H.S. Pharmacy in Hillsdale from 1958-1974.   He retired from the Department of Licensing and Regulation for State of Michigan.  Jack was a member of the tax review board for Hillsdale Township for several years.  He previously headed the cancer drive for the Hillsdale County, American Cancer Society.  He served on various pharmaceutical associations.  Jack was an avid fisherman and hunter.  He collected antique vases and loved gardening. Surviving besides his wife Ann are three daughters, Kim Henry of Knoxville, Tenn., Deborah (Larry) Donahue of Sumnar, Mich., and Juli (Dennis) Bowerman of Coldwater; a son, Terry (Marsha) Wiegman of Haslet; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother. Memorial services for Jack Henry will be Monday at noon at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hillsdale with Pastor Julie Carey officiating.  Interment will take place at a later date.  The family will receive friends for visitation Monday from 11 a.m. until services at noon at the church.  Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. John E. Lawson John E. Lawson, age 78, of Clarkston went to be with the Lord on January 14, 2010. He was born on December 22, 1931, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Ernest and Sybil (Barron) Lawson. He lived there until 1949 when he quit school to join the Coast Guard and was discharged honorably in 1952. He was stationed in Detroit, Mich. In the early 1960s, started racing go-karts and later went on to be the World Karting Associations National Champion in the F.K.E. Division in 1975 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. He was also many times Class Champion and Karter of the year with the Michigan Kart Club and served as president while the club put on the I.K.F. John is survived by two former wives, Arlene and Arla Lawson; brother, William of Phoenix, Ariz.; children, Deborah (Lawerance) Ulry of St. Clair Shores, Mark Lawson of Savannah, Ga., Kenny and Richard Lawson of Sterling Heights, Robert (Cherri) Lawson of Clinton Township; granddaughters, Tasha (Tommy) Ellison and Shelby Lawson; grandsons Ronald J. Hill, Jr. and James D. Hill, both of Florida; and four great-great-grandchildren. He also will be missed by his many friends at the Clarkston Eagles, Aerie 3373, in Clarkston, Mich. John Henry Peebles, of San Rafael, Calif., passed away Monday, Jan.11, 2010, at the age of 94. He was born Jan. 2, 1916 ,in Hudson, MI, the fourth child of four, to Willis Peebles and Nellie (Hawkins) Peebles.  John grew up on a farm in Hudson and his uncle had one of the few trucks around at the time.  He graduated from Hillsdale College with an accounting degree. John flew 30 missions over Europe as a navigator in B-24s and received the Distinguished Flying Cross.  He met his future wife, Patricia Boyd, at Steel Products in Hillsdale and they were married on Feb. 10, 1945.  They took a trip across the northern states of the United States and settled in Torrance, Calif., where they had friends from Michigan.  They moved to Temple City in 1951 where they lived until 2007 when they moved to San Rafael to be near their daughter and her family.  His son and his family still live in Temple City.  John started working for Southern Counties Gas Co.,in 1948 and retired as supervisor of disbursements in Accounting. At that time he went to work in Pat's travel agency. John was very active with Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and was assistant manager and manager for many years.  He was also active in Kiwanis. He had great pride and joy in his three grandchildren.  He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His wife of 64 years, Pat, preceded his death last June.  He is survived by his son, Frederick (Vivian) Peebles of Temple City; his daughter Mary (James) Adams of San Rafael; grandchildren, Whitney Peebles, Julie Jacobson, James Adams, and great-grandson, Wes Peebles; as well as nephews and a niece and their families. Funeral services for John Henry Peebles will be at 11a.m. Monday, at the Van Horn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Terry Bobzien officiating.  Internment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jefferson Township.  The family will receive friends for visitation from 3-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Joseph Dominic La Barbera Joseph Dominic La Barbera, age 70, a resident of Clinton Township, died on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. He was born March 12, 1939, in Detroit to the late Dominic and Mary (nee Tocco) La Barbera. Mr. La Barbera was employed for over 10 years in the maintenance department of Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center, retiring in 2000. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and was a member of the AMVETS Post 29. He is survived by his brother, Donald (Linda) La Barbera; nieces, Karen (Santino) Polidori, Lynn (Bert) Ulrich, Sandy Lukas, Lori French, Debra (Tom) Croud, Michelle (Ken) Chmelko; nephews, Michael (Roseanna) Benedettini, Nathan La Barbera; cousins, Sam Pizzo and Diane Bean; and brothers-in-law, Richard Benedettini. Josephine Dorothy Litwin, age 90, of Britton died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at Lynwood Manor in Adrian. She was born  to Karl and Mary (Sovinski) Kuzara on Feb. 9, 1919, in Pennsylvania. She married Raymond Litwin on Sept. 3, 1938, at Dixon City, Pa. He passed away on Feb. 26, 1986. She and her husband operated the family farm together in Dundee Township from the 1940s until retiring in the 1970s and moved to Britton. Her survivors include one son, Raymond (Cathy) Litwin of Dundee; two daughters, Marlene Thorpe of Rockville, Md., and Paulette (Keith) Butts of Ocala, Fla.; one sister, Lorraine Kurimchak of Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren, Lorraine, Cheleste, Aaron and Christ; and four great-grandchildren, Tessa, Michael, Bryan and Ryan. Joy Lee Ferguson, age 70, of Cement City passed away on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at her home. She was born on Feb. 28, 1939, in Milford, Iowa to Elmer B. and Gretchen L. (Bates) Van der Aarde. She married Robert E. Ferguson on Nov. 5, 1997, in Somerset. He survives. Joy was raised in Spencer, Iowa, where she attended Spencer High School. In 1973, she married Larry Schlicht. They resided in Sac City, Iowa, where Joy worked as a controller for Noble Manufacturing, a division of Lear Siegler. They later moved to Minnesota where Joy sold toy farm equipment. She invented tire chains for toy tractors, forming her own company, Craftsmanship Unlimited. It is the only known company of its kind. All her life, Joy loved to cook. Coming from a family of diabetics, she was a strong advocate for diabetes detection. It was natural then, that she created the diabetic cookbook, Living with Diabetes, for the Interlake Lions Club, where she was an active member. The book was well received and went on to be the only known diabetic cookbook to be published in Braille. It is registered with the Library of Congress. Joy enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, and genealogy. Joy was a regular vendor at area flea markets where she and Robert sold baked goods, handcrafted items, and old records. She was a member of the Somerset Congregational Church. Surviving Joy are four sons, Timothy Schlicht of Van Nuys, Calif., Shane Schlicht of Sac City, Iowa, Kevin (Evelyn) Ferguson of Cement City; David (Wendie) Ferguson of Bentonville, Ark., one daughter, Christine (David) Knox of Pittsford; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. Visitation will be held from 10 – 11 a.m. Saturday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. The family has suggested donations go to Hillsdale County Senior Services or the Somerset Congregational Church. |

Lillian Anna Mae Jones, 77, of Jonesville, passed away Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center.  She was born Dec. 1, 1932, in Jonesville to Lonnie Llewellyn and Ruth (Smith) Potts.  She was married June 22, 1952, to Paul Jones and he survives. Mrs. Jones was a member of the Jonesville Presbyterian Church.  A graduate of Jonesville High School.  She was a lifelong resident of the Jonesville area. Raymond R. Stewart, age 67, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village. He was born Dec. 13, 1942, in Sturgis, a son to the late Paul and Mabel (Warkentine) Stewart. Raymond had lived in Colon, Mich., until 1955 when his family moved to Sturgis. He graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1960. He had been employed for Ross Labs for 19 years and he enjoyed gardening, animals, being around people, collecting antiques, and was a hard worker. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Reuben (Edna) Helmuth of LaGrange, Ind., and Mary Krugh of Howe, Ind.; four nieces and several cousins. Also a close friend, Don Dilts of LaGrange, Ind.. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Terry Krugh. According to his wishes, there will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Raymond Stewart will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at Thurston Woods Village, 307 N. Franks Ave, Sturgis, with The Rev. Paul Stern and Chaplain Glenn Russell, officiating. Memorial donations may be directed to Pet Haven, P.O. Box 583, Sturgis, MI 49091 or the charity of one’s choice. Rev. William Aiken Bowen, 84, of Monroe, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010 at his home. He had been in poor health since 2000 and seriously ill for five months. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Rupp Funeral Home, Inc. A memorial service will be on Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Monroe. Rev. Nancy Carle pastor of the church will officiate and Rev. James Jacobs will assist. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Sturgis. Born June 7, 1925, in Royal Oak; he was the son of William and Ruth (Aiken) Bowen. He married Roberta K. Brumbaugh on Aug. 31, 1970, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. Rev. Bowen was a graduate of Royal Oak High School, Alma College and McCormick Theological Seminary. He served in the United States Navy from July 1, 1943 to Nov. 15, 1945. A former member of Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Alma College Representative to the Maumee Valley Presbytery, Council of Churches, Maumee Valley Presbytery and a volunteer with Mercy Memorial Hospice. He served as pastor at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, Milwaukee, First Presbyterian Church, Loveland, Ohio, Walnut Hills First Presbyterian Church, Cincinnati, (where he also taught New Testament Literature at University of Cincinnati), First Presbyterian Church, Hamilton, Ohio, First Presbyterian Church, Sturgis, St. Thomas Community Presbyterian Church, Utica, Mich., First Presbyterian Church, Omro, Wisc., and First Presbyterian Church Monroe from which he retired in 1991. Surviving are his wife, Roberta; children, Kathleen Bowen of Riverside, Calif., David Bowen of Phoenix, Amy (Stephen) Pace, of Monroe, Phillip (Tammy) Bowen of Toledo, Emily (Bryan) Sears of Baltimore; grandchildren, Andrew Bowen, Jarod Bowen, Rachel Pace, Rebecca Pace and William Sears. He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard; brother, Ronald; and sister, Betty. Richard Allen Zavitz Richard Allen Zavitz, age 79, a resident of Chesterfield Township for five years, and formerly a longtime resident of Macomb Township, died January 19, 2010. Richard proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed by Chrysler Corporation. He loved to camp and liked to repair and tinker with cars. He was a loyal member of his church and loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth. Father of Linda Zavitz and Kimberly (Andy) Micham; grandsons, Harold Andrew Love III and Richard Johnathon Love. Richard Paul Niedbalski, age 72, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at his home. He was born in Terra Haute, Ind., on Sept. 5, 1937,  the son of Eugene  and Clara (Klosowski) Niedbalski. In 1955, Richard graduated from St. Joseph High School in South Bend. He served in the U.S. Navy. On July 5, 1975, Richard married Lois Ann Purta in South Bend. She preceded him in death on Dec. 6, 1999.  Richard retired from Challenger Company Elkhart, Ind., and previously worked at D&J Body Shop, Nemeth’s Body Shop, and Mersits, all in South Bend. Richard enjoyed vacationing in the Upper Peninsula and also loved restoring cars. He was a member of the America Legion #73, in Sturgis and the Disabled American Veterans. Surviving Richard are his daughters, Marilyn Kaye (John) Lalonde of Granger, Ind., Nanette (William) Esler of Niles, and Deanna Hanks of Mishawaka, Ind.; sons Michael (Julie) Niedbalski of Bremen, Ind., and Rick (Sarah) Niedbalski of South Bend, Ind.; and stepson Raymond (Tammy) Sheneman of Niles.  Also surviving are his 15 grandchildren, Jennifer, Tanya, Adam, Heather, Maya, Erin, Keri, Lucas, Karissa, Mitchell, Margaret, James, Kyle, Anthony and Shaun and three great-grandchildren, Izabelle, Christopher and Jesse. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois Niedbalski, and stepson David Sheneman. Relatives and friends will be received Tuesday from  6-8 p.m. at the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at  10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in White Pigeon with Father Richard Altine officiating. Richard W. Mattis, also known as “Nip” and “Dick,” age 87, passed away Jan. 17, 2010. Richard was born March 21, 1922, in Tipton, Mich., the son of Howard and Elizabeth (Soper) Mattis. On Nov. 10, 1945, he married Doris Rieve. She preceded him in death Oct. 29, 2006. A lifelong resident of Birdsall and Sand Lake, he commuted to the Palmetto, Fla., area for winters in retirement. He was an Adrian High School graduate and served his country in the Army Air Force during World War II.  Richard loved to play golf, cards and fish, as well as fix up and tinker. He was an artist and Master at whittling many intricate figures, and taught new whittlers the “trade.” Richard is survived by his sons, Larry (Rae Lynne) Mattis of Lillburn, Ga., and Dale (Barbara) Mattis of Huntington Beach, Calif.;  daughter, Laura Mattis of Onsted, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Mattis of Marshall; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dennis, and wife, Doris. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh, with Russell Rieve officiating. Burial will follow in Franklin Cemetery, Tipton. Robert F. Myers, 82, of Waldron passed away early Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 2010, at Fairlawn Haven in Archbold, Ohio. He was born Feb. 1, 1927, to the late Floyd F. and Huldah (Basinger) Myers. Robert married Joyce Gottschalk on July 14, 1951, in Angola, Ind., and she survives. Robert was a lifelong farmer and a past laborer and member of the Lauber Hill Reformed Mennonite Church since 1955. He will be sadly missed by his wife, children, and grandchildren, whom he dearly loved. Surviving Robert besides his wife, Joyce, are two sons, Dave (Viki) Myers and Steve (Darlene) Myers all of Waldron; one brother, Oakley Myers of Waldron; six grandchildren, Rob, Jen, Andy, Adam, Shelby, and Sean; and seven great-grandchildren, Brody, Paige, Brianna, Dakota, Christian, Ryan, and Autumn. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Rolland, Darrell, and Francis; and a sister-in-law, Marian Myers. Robert G. Waffle, 79, of Burlington, died Jan. 15, 2010. in Battle Creek. He was born Nov. 17, 1930 in Tekonsha to Ernest L. and Dorothy (Aldrich) Waffle. He lived and farmed in the Tekonsha area all his life. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict in a military police unit. He  served as a trustee and board member of the Tekonsha Township Board of Review and Zoning Board for several years and was a member of the Tekonsha Historical Society. He is survived by a special friend Glenna McCreery; his children and stepchildren, Kathy (Russ) Shamplo of Pittsford, Sid Waffle of Battle Creek, Marie (Thom) Hood of Battle Creek, Julie (Robert) Sizemore of Burlington, Pamela (Steve) Citowitz of Indianapolis, and Patricia (Doug) Howard of London, Ky.; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, a brother Ernie (Billie) Waffle and sisters Doris King and Vicki Enright, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Carl (Spark) Waffle and a stepson Walt Waffle. Bob raised Limousin cattle and belonged to the Michigan Limousin Assoc. and the North American Limousin Foundation. He was a former Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day Parade, was very active in community affairs, enjoyed hunting for many years with the Cliff Doolittle family in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and watching his grandchildren participate in 4-H activities. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Putnam’s of Tekonsha. Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Union Church United Church of Christ with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Robert P. Mero, age 82, of Hudson passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at his home. He was born June 20, 1927, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, to Ean and Mary (Ridky) Mero. On Sept. 14, 1957, he married Helen Young in Livonia, Mich., and she survives. He was employed by Awrey Bakeries until his retirement in June 1984. He was a member of the Morenci Bible Fellowship, where he served on the Board of Deacons. He raised fancy show pigeons and was a member of several pigeon clubs. He enjoyed hunting and he loved and enjoyed spending time with his family and his church family. In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by two sons, Dale (Rita) Mero of Marlette, Mich., and Steven Mero of Grand Rapids, Minn.; two daughters, Deb (Andrew) Morse of Berkley, Mich., and Lori (Randy) Tate of Jackson, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; an adopted son, Bill Sleeper of Warren, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Thomas, Austin and Raymond. Shirley B. Houttekier, age 90, of Jasper passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at Bixby Medical Center, surrounded by her loved ones. Shirley was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Adrian, the daughter of Merle and Gertrude (Hagen) Bailey. She graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1937. On Jan. 14, 1939, Shirley married George Houttekier in Angola, Ind. George and Shirley celebrated 45 years of marriage prior to his death in 1983. Shirley worked as a nurse’s aide at Hawley’s Nursing Home and Dusseau’s Nursing Home in Morenci where she retired in 1978. She was a faithful member of the Adrian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Shirley truly loved being a caregiver, a homemaker and a gardener. She was a great mother and a devoted grandmother who treasured time spent with her family. She was a favorite babysitter for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Shirley is survived by her children, Hilda (Jerry) Cool of Jasper, Dwight (Patricia) Houttekier of Morenci and Morris (Bonnie Pizio) Houttekier of Tecumseh; 17 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Paul Houttekier; brother, Stanley Bailey; sister, Frederika Bailey in infancy; grandson, Richard Paul Jones; daughter-in-law, Carol Urbancik; and grandson-in-law, Jeffrey Jones. The funeral service for Shirley will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Wagley Funeral Home with Floyd Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Palmyra Cemetery. Susan C. Seiler, 70, of Mesa, Ariz. and formerly of Coldwater, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010 with her children by her side after a short but strong fight with cancer. Susan was born on June 17, 1939 in Camden to Muriel (Dexter) Collins and Donald Collins. Susan was a lifelong resident of Coldwater until 1993 when she moved to Mesa, Ariz., where she lived out her remaining years. Susan had many jobs while in Coldwater, but loved her job the most at Pizza Hut delivering pizzas. Susan loved to go to the beach with her children and loved to lay in the warm sun and read. She also loved to drive and listen to music and she loved to listen to the Detroit Tigers on the radio. Susan loved to go with friends to the Redwood Lounge and dance. She loved to knit and do latch hook in her spare time and read newspapers and magazines. Susan was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother that will be missed severely by her family. Susan left behind brother Larry and wife Louise Collins of Coldwater and sister Mary and husband Wayne Chandler of Illinois, daughter Donna (Seiler) Smyers of Arizona, son John and wife Sherri Seiler of Arizona, son Scott Seiler of Arizona, son Nick and wife Becky Seiler of Coldwater, grandchildren Travis, Trevor, Troy, Taylor, Gabrielle, Greg, Zach, Alex, Debbie and husband Steven Randolph, and great grandchildren Anastasia, Evangeline and Luke Randolph. Virginia Lee Turnwald, 78, of Sarasota, Fla., died Jan. 18, 2010. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Chuck; children, Thomas Turnwald of Bradenton Fla., Michael Turnwald of Southlake, Texas, Ann Turnwald Forrister of Adrian, Mich., David Turnwald of Allen Park Mich., and Carol Turnwald Grant of Myakka City, Fla.; a sister, Martha Boitos of Livonia, Mich.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was born in Dearborn, Mich., was a graduate of Siena Heights University in Adrian and worked as a learning disabled teacher in Sarasota at the Church of the Incarnation, Gulf Gate and Wilkinson Schools.  A memorial mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Sarasota. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations will be accepted by St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2506 Gulf Gate Drive, Sarasota, FL 34231. |

William H. White, age 88, of Marion, Mich., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, in the company of his family while at his daughters home in Fremont, Ind.  He was born in Sturgis on June 21, 1921, a son of John Alexander and Elizabeth Ann (Frain) White. William served his country in the U.S. Army.  On May 7, 1944 he married Emma P. Bupp in Sturgis, she preceded him in death on July 25, 2003.  William worked as a truck driver at Copeland Refrigeration in Sydney, Ohio, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and living life to its fullest. Surviving William are his daughters, Carol (Larry) Crapo of Constantine, Linda (Don) Hostetler of Sturgis, Lana (Louie) Lee of Fremont, Ind., Cathy (Gale) Daniels of Sturgis,  Penny  White of Vicksburg, Connie (Bill) McDaniel of Constantine, Bonnie Stump of Constantine; and sons  Dick (BJ) White of White Pigeon, DW (Dolores) White of Burr Oak, and Dale White of Sturgis. Also surviving are his 41 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three sisters, Katherine Nichols, Viola (White) Lucille Dunkle; three brothers, Walter White, Louis White and Charles White; daughter-in-law, Alberta White; grandson, David Keith Crapo; and his beloved dog Fluffer. Relatives and friends will be received Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at  the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday.  Interment will be in the Constantine Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to  St. Joseph County Relay for Life.
