Alberta “Bertie” Brainerd, 90, of Hillsdale, formerly of Coldwater, passed away Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.   She was born June 13, 1919 in Bryan, Ohio to J.V. and Gertrude (Eitel) Bumpus. She was married Aug. 27, 1948 to Oliver Brainerd and he preceded her in death in 1956. Bertie was a member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion, Eagles and the Hillsdale Community Health Center Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid card player who also enjoyed crosswords and word search puzzles. Survivors include one brother, Clarence (Gladys) Bumpus of Epoufette and many nieces and nephews.   Besides her husband Oliver, Bertie was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, LaMoille Salisbury and Mae Donner; and four brothers, Roy Rearick and Homer, Forrest and Donovan Bumpus. A memorial visitation for Alberta “Bertie” Brainerd will be Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Interment will take place at a later date in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Calif. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. Barbara Ann Knoll Barbara Ann Knoll, age 75, of St. Clair Shores died January 28, 2010 at William Beaumont Hospital-Grosse Pointe. She was born June 13, 1934 in Detroit. Mrs. Knoll worked as a secretary for the Detroit Police Department for several years and was a longtime member of St. Joan of Arc Church. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; children, Nancy Knoll and Paul Knoll; and brothers, Arthur and Harry Holloway. Visiting hours will be 2:30-9 p.m. on Sunday at Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson, St. Clair Shores with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church. Irene Mae Wurster, age 81, of Clinton passed away Jan. 28, 2010, at the Saline Evangelical Home. She was born Jan. 13, 1929, in McGuffey, Ohio, the daughter of LeRoy and Goldie (Brown) Lamb. She married Victor Charles Wurster on May 20, 1955, in Manchester and he survives. Irene was a member of the Manchester Legion Auxiliary and the Friends of the VFW in Adrian. She was also a member of Emanual United Church of Christ and was a past council member. Irene was an accomplished executive and legal secretary working for Albert J. Rapp, prosecuting attorney for Ann Arbor as well as law offices of Roesch and Delhanney and King and King in Lake Charles, La. Upon returning from the service with her husband, Victor, she began her 30-year career as the executive secretary to the president at Double A Products in Manchester, retiring in 1986. Irene was an avid golfer and accomplished bowler, winning many trophies and tournaments. Irene loved “digging in the dirt” alongside her husband, Victor, at their farm in Manchester. Besides her husband, Victor, she is survived by her children, Vicki (Ken) Pabst of Commerce City, Colo., and Michael Wurster of Clinton, Mich.; four granddaughters, Angelise and Alyssa Wurster, and Krysta and Keri Pabst; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Inez Lee Lamb; and brothers, Melvin Eugene Lamb and Eldon Dorn Lamb. The family will receive visitors at J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, 210 W. Pottawatamie, Tecumseh, on Monday, Feb. 1, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. at Emanuel United Church of Christ in Manchester with the Rev. Gary J. Kwiatek officiating. There will be a luncheon at the American Legion in Manchester immediately following the service. |

Stewart John “Jack” Solmonson, age 72, of Adrian passed away Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at Bixby Medical Center. He was born July 15, 1937, in Laurium, Mich., to Stewart Edward and Sara (Backstrom) Solmonson. On Dec. 6, 1958, he married Dorothy “Gale” Knight and she survives. Jack worked as a sheet metal worker with the Local Union #33 out of Toledo. He was a member of the Moose and the American Legion. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Kristine (Kevin) Cooper of Adrian; one son, Jake (Karen) Solmonson of Adrian; grandchildren, Jason, Joshua and Jacob Cooper, Jeremy Solmonson, Rikki Herman, Joshua, Jacob, Jeremy and Amanda Koelbel, Christian and Dakota Francoeur and Alexis Gauna; his mother, Sara Jilbert, of Laurium, Mich.; three siblings, Susan (Judge) Gregorich, Paul (Sue) Solmonson and Jeanne Buschell all of Laurium, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Farris “Jay” Hudson, Jr., age 48, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Toledo Hospital. He was born May 3, 1961, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Farris and Juanita (Lawson) Hudson, Sr. On Feb. 14, 1987, he married Sherry Popp in Ann Arbor and she survives. Jay was an auto body technician. He enjoyed his family life and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Kevin Jon Miller, 49, of Sturgis, passed away late Tuesday evening, Jan. 26, 2010, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born Nov. 1, 1960, in Sturgis, a son of  the late Elmer Ray and Shirley Louise (Rowan) Miller. Kevin had lived his whole life in Sturgis, where he graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1981. He had worked for McDonald’s and Kroger, delivered papers for the Gateway Shopper’s Guide and was part of the maintenance crew at the Klinger Lake Country Club. He was presently working at the St. Joseph County Co-Op. He enjoyed music, riding his mo-peds and was a true fan of NASCAR. Kevin is survived by a brother, Keith Miller of Sturgis; two sisters, Kathy (Chris) Strang of Sturgis and Kim Miller of Constantine and several nieces and nephews. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 11-11:45 a.m. Monday at Sturgis Wesleyan Church, where memorial services will begin at noon Monday. The Rev. Barry Edds will officiate. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis at a later date. (Devoe) Jarratt.  On March 21, 1947, she married Harry J. “Bud” Huber in Angola, Ind.; he preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 2002. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Ann Christner of Centreville and Barbara Jean and Melvin Beechy of Mesa, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joyce Ward of Mena, Ark., Janet Boyce of Three Rivers  and Jewel Jean Jarratt of Tucson, Ariz.; and a brother, Carl Jarratt of Baton Rouge, La. Also preceding her in death were her father, Claude Allen Jarratt; her mother, Clara M. Jarratt-Reed; her stepfather, Edson Reed; two daughters, Laura Mae Yoquelet and Jean Ann Huber; a sister, Betty Sue Jarratt; and three brothers, Duane, Donald, and Marvin Jarrett. Mary Louise Somsel, 62, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.  She was born Feb. 28, 1947 in Cambria Township, to Lorain and June (Keiser) Farrell.  She was formerly married to John Bowman in 1963.  On July 8, 1977, she married Carl Somsel and he survives. Mary was a member of the Hillsdale City Church.  She attended Hillsdale High School.  Mary enjoyed her grandchildren, family activities, camping and garage sales. Surviving besides her husband Carl are two children, Melinda Breault and Brian Bowman, both of Hillsdale; her mother, June Dull of Osseo; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Barb (Mike) Vernier of Coldwater and Sherry (Phil) Shaw of North Adams; two step-sons, Kevin and Scott; two half-sisters, Linda and Pat and a half-brother, Joe; and best friend Becky Hanning. She was preceded in death by her father, Lorain and step-father, Don Dull. Graveside memorial services for Mary Somsel will take place at a later date at the Morgan Cemetery in Hillsdale County.  There will be no visitation or calling hours at this time.  Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Melanie May Collins, 32, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday Jan. 23, 2010 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born July 25, 1977 in Coldwater. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1995 and was a substitute bus driver for Camden-Frontier Schools. Melanie received a medical assistant degree from Ross Medical School and was attending Kellogg Community College to become a registered nurse. She enjoyed cooking, music and dancing, had a wonderful sense of humor and an outgoing personality, and loved her family. On Oct. 23, 1999, she married John Collins and he survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Allison Marie Collins, Hillsdale; a son, Jared Michael Collins, Hillsdale; parents, Marion Leroy and Alice (Houtz) Stemen,  Allen; sister, Amy (Jack Church) Stemen, Homer; and a brother, Joshua (Sarah) Stemen, Quincy. She was preceded in death by two grandmothers and two grandfathers. Funeral services are at 1 pm. Thursday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor Paul Pickell officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jefferson Township. Visitation is scheduled Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family. |

Mildred L. Bowman, age 91 of Addison, passed away on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale. She was born on Oct. 13, 1918, in Medina Township to Curtis H. and Theresa (Dillion) McKibbin.  She married Maxwell J. Bowman on Jan. 16, 1938, in Addison, and he preceded her in death on June 14, 1974. Mildred graduated from Addison High School in 1937.  She operated the former Bowman’s Bakery in Addison from 1938-1940 and then she worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti.  She was a cook at Addison Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1988.  She also was a homemaker all her life. Mildred was a member of the former Addison Methodist Church, member of the Addison Senior Citizens Center and the Carousel Club of Addison. Surviving are one son, Owen H. (Jane) Bowman of Addison, one daughter, Marlene (Paul) Gillespie of Dartown, Ohio, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one sister, Juanita Jennings of North Adams, nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell, one son, Dr, George E. Bowman, one daughter, Maxine Gerber and one brother, Charles McKibbin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Pastor Will Snyder officiating.  Burial will take place in Dibble Cemetery, Wheatland Township.  Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today. Rosemary was born Dec. 5, 1928 in Chicago, Ill. to August and Lillian(Reina) Scolaro. She married Samuel Russo on April 12, 1945 in Chicago. Rosemary has lived most of her life in the Coldwater area. She was a telephone operator and had been co-owner of the former Wolf’s Floor Coverings in Coldwater. Mrs. Russo had managed the former Gittleman’s Clothing Store in Coldwater and also worked at the former Benedict’s Restaurant. Rosemary had owned and operated an interior decorating business and for many years she had been the Assistant Program Director and Trip Coordinator at the HC Burnside Senior Center in Coldwater, retiring in 2008. She was very devout in her Catholic faith, belonging to St. Charles Borromeo Church, where she was a member of the St. Elizabeth guild and proud to have served as the first female president of the Coldwater Downtown Business Association. Rosemary and her husband Sam loved to dance and proudly took second place in the first annual Coldwater “Dancing with Celebrities” competition in 2008. She enjoyed reading and loved to cook, but most of all she enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. Rosemary is survived by her husband Sam, her sons Joe and Deb Russo of Reston Va. and Sam and Karen Russo of Erlanger, Kent., her daughter Mary and Jim Buettner of Belmont, her grandchildren Joe, Angela, Tiffany, Vanessa, Sophia, Elissa, Regina and Samantha five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. Memorials may be directed to Pines Senior Respite Services. Sister Phyllis Duffie, formerly known as Sister Barbara Martin Duffie, died on Jan. 27, 2010, at the residence of her sister, Barbara Burdett, 906 Mercer Ave., Bloomington, Ill. She was 68 years of age and in the 51st year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister Phyllis was born in Chicago, Ill., to Burke and Mae Alma (Christiaanse) Duffie. Sister graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian, Mich., and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Mich. Sister spent 44 years teaching in elementary schools in Joliet, Homewood, Riverdale, Blue Island, Oak Lawn and Chicago, Ill. She also spent three years teaching in Des Moines, Iowa, and two years in Fort Wayne, Ind. Sister Phyllis is survived by her mother, Mrs. Mae Duffie, and a sister, Barbara Burdett, both of Bloomington, Ill. Visitation is from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, in the Adrian Room of Madden Hall, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in Holy Rosary Chapel. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered in Holy Rosary Chapel, at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery. MUSKEGON — Julia Craker Kinnucan, 93, passed away on Jan. 27, 2010, at Sanctuary of the Oaks in Muskegon.Her birth took place on Sept. 5, 1916, at the W.A. Craker farmhouse on Kalchik Road in Omena. Her parents were Clifford and Martha (Popa) Craker. During her youth Julia and her family lived on North Manitou Island, where she first met her husband-to-be, John L. Kinnucan. They were married on Jan. 1, 1935, at the George Craker farmhouse on Craker Road, Omena.The couple returned to the island and later moved to Muskegon, where they raised their family. In 1973 they moved to Suttons Bay. Julia again returned to Muskegon after John's death in 1984.Julia is survived by her six children, Jack (Nola) Kinnucan of Traverse City, Julian Kinnucan of Muskegon, Jerry (Lorraine) Kinnucan of Muskegon, Janet (Joe) Novak of Traverse City, Jean (Dan) Wimmer of Twin Lake and Jillene (George) Race of Muskegon; two sisters, Carrie McMachen of Las Vegas and Virginia Marsden of Honor; she will be remembered by her 17 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; a brother, Cyril "Buddy" Craker; and a sister, Leona Craker. In Leelanau County, a visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 3, from 11 a.m. until the start of the funeral service at 1 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. Valentin “Val” Villarreal, 82, formerly of Adrian, passed away Jan. 25, 2010, in Lansing. Val was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Mexico, the son of Pedro and Guadalupe (Herrevia) Villarreal. He was married to Nieves Banda who preceded him in death. Val raised his family in the Adrian area. He will be sadly missed by his children, Cruz, Valentin Jr., David, Edna, Deborah, Roverta, Michael, Dora, Tim and Anna; 31 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Juan. A memorial service for Val will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at Wagley Funeral Home. W. Gayle "Bill" Davis, 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Boyne City on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010. He was born in Grand Rapids, on Jan. 19, 1931, to J. Warne and Florence (Spidel) Davis. Bill was still an infant when his family moved back to East Jordan, where his mother was born and raised. He had many fond memories of summers spent on his grandparents, Wilbur and Bertha Spidel's, farm. After graduating from East Jordan High School with the class of 1949, Bill worked for Buick in Flint, riding his Indian motorcycle back to East Jordan every weekend. In 1951, he married the former Esther Zitka. They were later divorced. |

Wendell “Wendy” Barrow, age 84, of Essexville  passed away Jan. 27, 2010, at Brian’s House-Bay. He was born in Adrian, Mich., on April 20, 1925. Funeral Liturgy will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Robert J. DeLand will preside with Rite of Committal following at St. Patrick’s Mausoleum.
