Jean Byers

Friday, March 27, 2009 1:30 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Born on Nov. 6, 1933 in Fall River, Mass., Jean Byers passed away surrounded by her family on March 19, 2009 at a hospital in Van Nuys, Calif., 10 miles from her home in West Hills. She is survived by her husband Jack Byers and her two daughters Cameron L Morgan and Darlene K Greenwood. In 1934, her family moved to Coldwater, where she grew up with her sister, Janice and her brother Jim. In high school, she met Jack Byers and quickly fell in love. They were married on July 20, 1951 – the same year that she graduated high school. Jack and Jean moved out to California but soon returned to Coldwater where their daughters Cameron and Darlene were born. Jack built Jean and the family a house outside of town, down the street from her parents. In 1960, they returned to California, settling in Canoga Park.   Jean was active in the PTA, Girl Scouts and Sweet Adeline’s. Her passion was singing and during her years in Sweet Adeline’s, she traveled with the group on competitions and also in a variety of shows.   During the 70’s and 80’s Jean took care of many friend and family children and babies.  She added the “Grandma Touch” when helping to care and raise them as if they were her own. Jean was most excited when her 1st grandchild Christopher was born in 1983, quickly followed by the births of her other two grandchildren Shannon in 1985 and Michael in 1986. She loved her family and friends and always wanted to please everyone. It wasn’t unusual to get a phone call from her just to say HI. In 1999, Jean received some unexpected news, having been told that she had colon cancer. But even cancer couldn’t keep her down, as she rebounded quickly after her surgery. Then Jean was challenged with another medical illness of having rheumatoid arthritis in 2005. Unfortunately, this was something that could not be cured; only treated with comfort care. Doctors are still looking for a cure. Although this slowed her down it did not slow down her spirit or love. We will greatly miss our Mom but we will keep her in our memories and in our hearts. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Coldwater at the Baptist church. Details to follow.
