GEORGE W. ALLEN, JR. George W. Allen, Jr., 65, died on Saturday, February 28, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. George Allen, Jr., was born on September 1, 1943, in Wadesboro, N.C. He grew up in New Bern , N.C., and graduated from New Bern High School and North Carolina State University. George had a long career in sales and retired in 2006. George loved his wife and dedicated care-taker, Pat, his stepson Steven, grandsons Kenny, Steven, and Roscoe, his family, friends, and tabby cat Maggie. He was a great story-teller and thoroughly enjoyed cars, music, sports, animals, art, and all types of gadgets. His parents, George W. Allen, Sr., and Edna Fletcher Allen preceded him in death. George is survived by his loving wife, Pat, stepson Steven Brouard, and grandchildren Steven, Kenny, and Roscoe of Big Bear, California, Brother, Joseph Allen of New Bern, Sisters Maryann Echols of Charlotte, Margaret Barclay and husband Ned of Wilmington, N.C., and Flora Crowe and husband Needham of Raleigh, brothers-in-law Michael and Tony McDaniel of Raleigh and St. Croix, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Baker, Bernice Elizabeth "Beanie"

Bernice Elizabeth "Beanie" Baker, 93, of Statesville, died Feb. 25, 2009, after a brief illness. Mrs. Baker was born in Statesville on June 23, 1915, the second of four children of Charles Sydney and Vernon Cline Brawley. Mrs. Baker was a graduate of Statesville City Schools and of Mitchell College. She also attended Appalachian State Teachers College, where she met Eugene Goodman Baker. Beanie and Gene Baker were married on June 3, 1939, and were united in love until Mr. Baker's death in 2005. Beanie was a lifelong resident of Statesville. She grew up on Davie Avenue, raised her family and lived for 50 years on Oakwood Drive, and returned again to Davie Avenue as a resident of The Gardens from 2004 until the time of her death. She was a long-time member of Broad Street United Methodist Church and currently a member of Concord Presbyterian Church in Loray. She fulfilled her chosen role of wife and mother with consummate skill and with love. She had a gift for friendships that endured for decades. Beanie is survived by her three children: Tom Baker and his wife, Doris, of Monument, Colo.; Leslie Baker Arpin and her husband, Edward, of Raleigh; and Bill Baker and his wife, Emily, of Statesville. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha B. Marley and Charlye B. Shelton and by a brother, William S. Brawley. Beanie took great delight in her six grandchildren: Brad Baker and his wife, Bridget, of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; Katie Baker Collins and her husband, Parks, of Statesville; Douglas Baker of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Laura and Thomas Arpin of Raleigh; Liz Baker, also of Raleigh. She is survived also by a great-grandson, Baker Parks Collins, of Statesville. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Concord Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kyle Goodman presiding. Friends and family are invited to gather in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. A private committal will be held at Oakwood Cemetery. Bennett, Joseph Albert

Joseph Albert Bennett, 85, of 1319 Knox Street, Statesville, passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Mr. Bennett was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Iredell County and was the son of the late Alfred and Bessie Hedrick Bennett. He attended Iredell County schools and was retired from Paola Mills in Statesville. He was a member of First Wesleyan Church, where he was an avid Christian and loved his Sunday school class. Mr. Bennett is survived by eight nieces, Gail P. Sowell, Debbie Price, Cheryl Travis, Elsie Ladd, Teresa Speaks, Betty Bass (Homer), Colleen Brawley (J.D.), Sue Jarvis (Ralph) and numerous cousins. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Price and Lois Bennett, and by two half-brothers, Flake and Clay Bennett. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at First Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Doug Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Ruth loved to work and was successful at everything she tried including working at Cone Mills, Revolution Plant, Bates Nightwear, and owning and operating her own ceramic and pottery shop. She could often be found selling her crafts at the Greensboro Farmer's Curb Market at the corner of Lindsay and Yanceyville Street. Ruth was of the Baptist faith and attended New Horizon church when she was able. Mrs. Bennett is preceded in death by Carvin Bennett, her husband of forty-nine years. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Ron Poe of Greensboro; son and daughter-in-law, Aubrey and Margaret Bennett of Greensboro, sister, Anna Mae Connor; grandsons, Brian Poe of Sandy Utah and Daniel Poe of Americus, Ga.; three great-grandchildren; and her niece, Doris and Bill Oakley of Summerfield. He loved his church family and was involved in many church activities including serving as a Deacon. Mr. Bost was a veteran of the US Navy and was retired from Thompson Steel Co. in Baltimore, MD, where he worked for almost forty years. He was also an avid fisherman. Surviving is his wife, Shirley A. Bost; one son, Kevin Bost; and one sister, Joyce Matthai. MRS. SARAH MAYO BROGDEN Mrs. Sarah (Sally) Mayo Brogden passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice surrounded by members of her family and friends that she loved so much. A private internment will take place at Oakdale Cemetery. Mrs. Brogden was born November 20, 1919, in Wilson, North Carolina, to the late Sarah Helen Daniel Mayo and the late Henry Bauman Mayo. On Sunday, May 28, 1939, she married the late Leon L. Brogden, Sr., whom she met in Wilson. Sarah and Leon eventually settled in Wilmington, North Carolina where they raised their three sons. Sarah was a member of the Dobson Sunday School class at the First Baptist Church in Wilmington for over 50 years. She was an avid bridge player, who enjoyed many hours of play with family and friends. Her husband, Leon L. Brogden, Sr., her son Leon Jr. and her brother William Mayo preceded Sarah in death. She is survived by her two sons and their families, William Mayo Brogden and wife Ann of Tulsa, Oklahoma and James Ennis Brogden and wife Gay of Greensboro, North Carolina. Sarah has seven grandchildren, Laura Brogden of Port Angeles, Washington, Susan Coleman of Milton, Washington, Reid Brogden of Apex, North Carolina, Tracy Miller of Leawood, Kansas, Cindy Roberts of Scottsdale, Arizona, Dana Brogden and Adam Brogden of Greensboro, North Carolina. She also has eleven great-grandchildren; Gabriel, Grace, Ciara, Cydney, Caroline, Samuel, Evelyn, Jordan, Campbell, Kate and Taylor. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and countless friends. The memorial service will held Thursday, March 5, 2009, at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church, Wilmington, North Carolina. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. The family would like to sincerely thank the doctors, nurses and friends at the Zimmer Cancer Center and the Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their unending love and support. The family would also like to thank the caregivers who showered compassion and love over the final year of Mrs. Brogden's life. Chaney, Walter Calvin

Walter Calvin Chaney, 90, of Salisbury, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, at North Carolina State Veteran's Nursing Home. Born June 4, 1918, in Gaston County, he was the son of the late Dewitt Hayworth and Ethel Chaney Hayworth. Mr. Chaney was a graduate of Boyden High School. A veteran of the U.S. Army, during World War II, he retired from Salisbury Fire Department, after 20 years of service. A life member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, he was a Sunday School secretary for 35 years, deacon emeritus, a member of church property committee, and a member of the senior adult choir and sanctuary choir. He was also a volunteer at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Preceding him in death were his birth parents, Walter C. Chaney and Hester Anthony Chaney; and two sisters, Flora H. Miller and Juanita H. Sasser. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Grubb Chaney, whom he married June 4, 1938; daughter, Patricia Chaney Proctor, of Statesville; brothers, J. Van Hayworth (Ann), Wayne Hayworth (Loretta), all of Salisbury, and Frank Hayworth (Norma), of Concord; sister, Debbie Hayworth Sutton, of Salisbury; grandchildren, Dean Chaney Proctor (Alisha), Linda Proctor Thompson (Wesley); great-granddaughters, Keely Proctor and Katie Thompson. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at Lyerly Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, where he will lie in-state for 30 minutes before the service. The Rev. Charlie Bryan and the Rev. Ron Touchton will officiate. Burial will follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by Salisbury Fire Department. . He was a member of the Madison Fire Department for over 35 years where he served as Fire Chief from 1957 - 1958. He was a former member of the Madison Rescue Squad and Dan River Masonic Lodge. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Mayodan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Carter Highfill; five sisters; and one brother. He is survived by his son, Richard Highfill and wife Sally of Mayodan; one grandson, Lang Highfill and wife Cindy; two great grandchildren, Blake and Hayley all of Mayodan; and one step great grandson, David Dixon of Daytona Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Mildred Turner of Axton, Va., Agnes Purdy of Reidsville, Gladys Russell and Josephine Parrish of Mayodan. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at the funeral home and all other times at the home of Richard and Sally Highfill, 800 W. Monroe St., Mayodan. Helen Douglass Hughes, 98, died peacefully in her sleep at Rex Hospital on March 2, 2009., Helen was born in Fuquay Springs on March 10, 1910, the oldest daughter of William Birch Douglass and Annie Farmer Douglass. She graduated from Granger High School in Kinston, NC, in 1927. She attended the Woman College of the University of North Carolina for one year prior to her marriage to Charles Dewey Barham of Goldsboro, NC. A son, Charles, Jr. was born in July 1930 and daughter, Harriette Ann was born in February 1935. Her husband was killed in an automobile accident in February 1936; and Helen and her two children moved to Raleigh to be near her parents who had earlier moved to Raleigh from Kinston., Over the years Helen was employed by Hardbarger's Business College, the Aeronautical Engineering Department of North Carolina State College, Carolina Power & Company, Hugh Morson High School and the North Carolina Highway Department., In January 1968, Helen married A. J. "Red" Hughes, a Division Engineer of the North Carolina Highway Department. They lived in Sylva and Southern Pines. Following Red's death in 1983, Helen remained in Southern Pines until 1997 when she moved to the Whitaker Glen retirement community in Raleigh., Helen was a member of First Baptist Church of Raleigh and the Ellen Brewer Sunday School Class., She is survived by her son, Charles Dewey Barham, Jr., his wife, Peggy, their daughter, Margaret; her son, David of Raleigh and their son, Charlie and his wife, Ann of Winston-Salem; and by her daughter, Harriette Ann Best of Fairfax, VA; her son, Albert and his wife, Sandy and their children, Scott, Nash and Dwight, all of Wilmington; and her son, Langhorne his wife, Michelle, and their children, John, James and Joseph, all of Arlington, VA; a stepdaughter, Ann Day and her husband, Ken of Rome, GA. Helen is also survived by a brother, Harry W. Douglass and wife, Jeanne of New Bern; a sister, Josephine D. Dixon of Roanoke VA; a sister-in-law, Mary G. Douglass of Raleigh., Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, William, Birch and Clyde Douglass and her sister, Dolly Tyson., Proverbs 31 speaks of a woman who "is clothed with strength and dignity,"and who "speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction," and whose "children arise and call her blessed." We, her family, are grateful and blessed that Helen set such a noble example for each of us., The funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church, 99 N. Salisbury Street. Mr. Jerry Dewitt Leggett died Monday, March 2, 2009 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness., Mr. Leggett was born October 23, 1926 in Washington, NC Beaufort County, the son of the late Richard Ralph and Mae Langley Leggett. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Ralph Leggett, Jr., He was a retired structural engineer., Following graduation from Washington High School, he enlisted in the Army Corps and served during World War II. While in the service he attended Davidson College and after being discharged he attended North Carolina State University and subsequently received a degree in Civil Engineering. He began his career with Peden Steel Company in Raleigh, and after moving to Fayetteville was associated with Hercules Steel before joining Huske-Leggett and Associates as a consulting engineer., Mr. Leggett served as past president of the Fayetteville Lions Club and treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Cape Fear Botanical Garden. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Fayetteville for many years. His love for his church was demonstrated by his many areas of service. He was a lifetime Deacon, and over the years served as moderator of the Board of Deacons, chaired the Building and Grounds Committee and was a member of the Men's Bible Sunday School Class. His hobbies were gardening and "building"., Mr. Leggett is survived by his wife, Helen, of Fayetteville; and a daughter, Kimberly Leggett of Graham, NC. He was a devoted husband and father, and was much loved by his family and many friends., Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at First Baptist Church, 201 Anderson Street with the Rev. Ed Beddingfield officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the church. She was born January 25, 1908, in Stokes County to Albert and Ida Shelton Hooker. She lived with her husband Edgar Marshall on Priddy Road in King where they farmed and raised their family. Lillian was of the Primitive Baptist Faith. She enjoyed working in her flowers, crocheting, and a number of other crafts, especially getting together with other neighborhood ladies for quilting parties. She had lived all her life in Stokes County except for the last 10 years when she moved to Greensboro to the Golden Living Center-Starmount on Holden Road. Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sons, Belmont (Pat) Marshall, and James Marshall; a daughter, Sara (Geno) Smith, and a grandson, Ken Marshall; five brothers, William, Elmer, Lewis, Ray, and Harvey; four sisters, Cora, Gracie, Betty, and Ettcel. Those left to cherish her memory are a son, Carl Ray Marshall and wife Dorothy of King, and a daughter, Rilla Avoline Shaw and husband, Odis of Greensboro; a son-in-law, Geno Smith, and a daughter-in-law, Pat Marshall both of King; 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 10 great, great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening, Wednesday, March 4, at the funeral home. Mildred Johnson Register, 86, shed her earthly cares and went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, March 1, 2009, following a 3-month battle with cancer., She was born in Warsaw, NC on October 18, 1922 to Charles and Bessie Johnson, the youngest of six children. Her parents preceded her in death as well as her husband, G.B., to whom she was married for 36 years, their infant son, George Lee, brothers, Charlie of Kinston, Alton of Catawba, Page and J.P. of Warsaw and sister, Louise Young of Warsaw., A son, Sam, his wife Karen; granddaughter, Lindsay; and grandson, Alex, all of Raleigh, survive her., She loved her church, Garner United Methodist, where she was a 50-year member of the Nannie Bryan Sunday School class as well as being involved in Disciple Bible Study. She was also a member of The Birthday Club, a group of friends who meet for lunch monthly. She was a homemaker and was employed at Smith Elementary in Garner, where she was cafeteria cashier from 1965-68. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many., Before her illness slowed her just after Thanksgiving, she was active and busy and there was nothing Miss Mildred enjoyed more than cooking for her family and friends. She expressed her love for her family by preparing dinner every Sunday following church and her homemade biscuits and lemon, pecan and sweet potato pies, strawberry shortcake, carrot cake and banana pudding were the best her family ever tasted., The family wishes to thank Dr. Jeffrey Abrams, Melissa O'Neal and the nurses and personnel on 6C at WakeMed, Dr. Mark Nichols of Hospice and Dr. James Parsons and the nursing staff at Mayview Convalescence Home for the compassionate care she received during her illness., Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Garner United Methodist Church. She was born Sept. 22, 1924, in Davie County, and was the daughter of the late Dalton and Martha Jane Anderson Boger. She retired from Harmony Elementary School after 17 ½ years of service in the cafeteria, and she was a member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and talking on the phone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Renegar, whom she married on Dec. 18, 1945; and five brothers, Harding, Coolidge, Wellman Long, Spencer W. and Robert L. Boger. Lois is survived by her son, Ronald H. Renegar (Patricia), of Harmony; a granddaughter, Adana R. Davis (Charles), of Statesville; a grandson, Jamie S. Renegar, of Harmony; two great-grandchildren; Megan Davis, of Statesville, and William Jackson Renegar, of Cooleemee; and a brother, Hoover Boger, of Mocksville, and by many close friends. MARY SERKIZ Mary Serkiz, 95, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2009, at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove. She was born on July 26, 1913, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, to John and Jenny Kopytko. She was always amazed and gratified that although an only child, she left a progeny of three children, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her family was the source of her greatest pride, and Mary served them as the consummate role model of love, compassion, and generosity of spirit. She was predeceased in 1999 by her husband of sixty-six years, Michael Serkiz. Prior to moving to Wilmington, NC, Mary lived for many years on Long Island, NY, where she was employed as the school cafeteria manager for Vandermuellen High School in Port Jefferson, NY, and also for the Comsewogue School District. Her culinary expertise won her schools many trophies in county-wide competitions. Mary's lifelong passion was gardening. Her vegetable patch and flower-filled yard always brought neighbors over to admire and share the fruits of her labors. For many summers, her beautiful flowers graced the altar of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Port Jefferson Station, NY. She and her husband were faithful members at St. Paul's for approximately sixty years. Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Jean Wooley and husband Robert of Wilmington, NC, and Nancy Palmer and husband David of Punta Gorda, Florida; son Aleck Serkiz and wife Shirley of Matthews, NC; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her family is grateful to the staff at Autumn Care for providing professional, compassionate care for our mother as she lived her final months with respect and dignity. The funeral service will be held at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church on Friday, March 6, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. with family visitation following. Interment will be at Oleander Memorial Gardens. Roy Pinkney "R.P." Sherrill, 84, of 9794 Paul Payne Store Road, Stony Point, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, at his home. He was born May 12, 1924, in Alexander County, to the late Roy and Ila Moose Sherrill. He served our country in World War II in the U.S .Navy as a gunner on the USS Circe in the Pacific. He was employed at the J.C. Penny Distribution Center for 38 years and was member of Elk Shoals ARP Church. His passion was gardening. He especially enjoyed playing baseball, cards, reading and camping with them. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a volunteer at the Greensboro Historic Museum, a member of the Altrusa Club of Greensboro and a member of the Asheboro Library Foundation Board of Directors. Mrs. Taylor grew up in Asheboro and was a former member of Central United Methodist Church. She was one of nine original founders of the Asheboro Public Library in 1936. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband John Craven Taylor. She is survived by son John Craven Taylor, Jr. and wife Aprell of Lewisville and daughter Elizabeth Taylor Longee of Greensboro. Her grandchildren, Leigh Taylor Redmond, Jonathan Taylor and David Taylor will miss their loving "Gram". Bill was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He served on several committees and was a Lay Leader at Hiatt Memorial United Methodist Church. Bill was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korea Conflict and was a devoted Wake Forest Demon Deacon fan. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Wanell (Williard) Wall; two sons, Bruce (Debbie) Wall and Gary Wall; one step-son, Eddie (Kathy) Weaver; one daughter, Janice (Tim) Flinn; one sister, Treva Bowen; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Wall and six grandchildren, David, Samantha, Rachel, Trey, Karley and Eli.
