Michigan Obituaries 9/21/09

Albert V. Flore

Albert V. Flore Bainbridge Township Al Flore, age 93, a resident of Bainbridge Township, left this world on September 16, 2009 with his family at his side. He was born near Emerson, Manitoba on July 16, 1916. His parents, Karl and Caroline Kelm Florkosky, emigrated from Poland. The seventh of eight children, Al left home at the age of 13 during the Great Depression to look for work. For the next seven years he was "on the bum" as he traveled across Canada; he delivered mail by dog sled in the Yukon, trapped and hunted in the great Northwest, cut wood, worked in the fields, delivered bootleg liquor, and rode the rails, just as many others did during the 1930's. In 1936, Al came to Southwest Michigan where relatives of his mother lived, met and married September, 1939. Clara Petruschke from Benton Harbor. He was very mechanical and could make or fix any type of equipment. In the early 40's he had his own business in Benton Harbor, "Al's Auto Body Shop". Al and Clara also took over the Petruschke family farm in Bainbridge where he lived the rest of his life. He was an innovative and progressive farmer. He built his own equipment, and was one of the first in Southwest Michigan to irrigate strawberries for frost, use black plastic to grow vegetables, and mechanically harvest sour cherries. In the late fifties and early sixties, he was active in the organization of the cherry and grape industries and made numerous trips to Lansing on their behalf. Al was known for his strong will, gregariousness, optimism, liberal views, honesty and independent spirit. He lived a full and satisfying life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Caroline Kelm Florkosky; brothers, Roy, Henry, and Willliam; sisters, Anna, Tressa, and Elise; infant son, William and Clara his beloved wife for over 65 years. He is survived by his son Jim (Elaine Shane) Flore from Williamston; three grand-daughters, Dr. Leigh Anne (Tom Lincoln) Flore of Pennsylvania, Katie Flore of Washington D.C. and Clare Flore of Portland, Maine; sister, Jean Klasz of Winnipeg, Manitoba and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A Memorial Gathering will be held Saturday, September 26 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Hutchins Funeral Home, Watervliet. Graveside services will be Sunday, September 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Millburg Cemetery, Roslin Road, Millburg. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his name to the homeless shelter, Open Door Ministry, Central United Methodist, 215 N. Capitol Ave., Lansing. The family is being served by the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, Williamston. www.gorslineruncimanfuneralhomes.com

June Curnow Perrin

June Curnow Perrin Lansing June passed away peacefully in her home on September 7, 2009. She was born in Lead, SD on June 14, 1920. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Frank "Bob" Perrin. Growing up in the Black Hills of South Dakota provided her a fulfilling and adventurous childhood. Lead, the headquarters of the Homestake Gold Mine, was quite a progressive community in the day, and June always joked about the challenges of moving to the less contemporary community of Lansing, Michigan. She graduated from Lead High School with an emphasis in business and stenography, which earned her the position as the youngest Court Recorder at the Lawrence County Probate Court. She also was appointed Deputy Sheriff at the age of 21. It just so happened that her Scottish Grandfather, Gregor Stewart, was the Sheriff of Lawrence County, which included Lead and the infamous town of Deadwood. Rudolph 'Rudy' J. Mueller

Sunday, September 20, 2009 7:04 AM

Rudolph 'Rudy' J. Mueller Rudolph "Rudy" J. Mueller, age 76, passed away Friday, September 18, 2009, in Warren. Rudy was a longtime resident of Shelby Township, and proprietor of Mueller Nursery. With a passion, Rudy Mueller loved his God and his family: his wife, his children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although quiet when accepting the numerous awards conferred upon him, he developed a reputation for integrity and honesty within the green industry. For many years, he proudly served local and state organizations in the nursery and landscape community. His greatest pleasures were watching nature's theatrics unfold: a doe in the woods, a cardinal at dusk, a rabbit at attention, a rhododendron bloom unfolding. He was an ecologist before the practice of caring for our Earth became popular. Rudy will be deeply missed by his family, friends and associates. Rudolph J. Mueller is survived by his wife, Helen Patricia (Pat) Mueller; children, Anne (Marc) Barton, Joan (Dennis) Tunningley, Joseph Mueller and Susan (Bryan) Beaubien; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Sabina M. Nowak

Sunday, September 20, 2009 7:04 AM

Sabina M. Nowak Sabina M. Nowak of Warren, died of natural causes in her home of 41 years on September 17, 2009. She was born on December 4, 1923, the youngest of four daughters of Pawel and Zofia Szantyka, who had emigrated from Poland. Following her graduation from the Felician Academy in Detroit, she attended the University of Detroit, where she earned a Ph.D. in Social Work, graduating magna cum laude. She met the love of her life, Anthony Nowak, while they were both singing for the prestigious Lutnia Choral Group in the late 1940s. They were married in 1949 and by 1954 had three children: Felicia, Michael and Dennis. In her middle thirties, as her interest in raising her own children grew, Sabina changed her career path from that of Social Worker into her dream of becoming a teacher. With three children under the age of ten in tow, she returned to night school at the University of Detroit, where she received her B.A. in Education. She taught for the next 25 years, first at St. Bartholomew and St. Mary Magdalen schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit and then at Beer Middle and Siersma Elementary schools in the Warren Consolidated School District. In 1968, Tony and Sabina moved the family to Warren where her greatest achievements may have been realized through her passionate involvement with St. Cletus Catholic Church. As a couple, not only did they serve as lay readers and Eucharistic ministers, they also handled much of the scheduling for the lay staff. For years Sabina wrote many of the prayers for Sunday Mass and often said prayers at funeral services for the church. She was also head and member of the Education Committee and church council for many years. Often, whether in the dead of winter or the dew of summer, they would be there to open up the church. When Tony became ill late in his life, Sabina was there for him, too, becoming his nurse and caretaker before he died in 2006. For almost three years after that, Sabina continued to serve her church — leading the singing and reading the epistles, often six days a week. Her faith sustained her. She is survived by her sister, Sister Mary Janine Szantyka of the Felician Sisters of Livonia and by her children and their spouses and partners: Felicia Shirk and John Shirk and their children Alexis and Cassandra; Michael Nowak and Kathleen Thompson; and Dennis Novak. Visitation is Monday from 2-9 p.m. at David J. Wysocki Funeral Home, 29440 Ryan Road in Warren. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Cletus Catholic Church, 26256 Ryan Road in Warren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Capuchin Soup Kitchen, 1820 Mt. Elliott Street, Detroit, MI 48207; www.cskdetroit.org.

Virginia Mary Cislo

Sunday, September 20, 2009 7:04 AM

Virginia Mary Cislo Virginia Mary Cislo, a 30-year resident of St. Clair Shores, passed away September 18, 2009. She was the beloved mother, sister, grandmother, favorite aunt, neighbor and friend to all who knew her as our "Chi-Chi". She was known for her kind and generous spirit. She was happiest when quietly giving to others. She is fondly remembered for her fabulous holiday meals — especially Harvey Wall Banger cake and City Chicken; her "quirky" gifts; her recycled mail; and making sure that "everyone has gas money to get home." She was proud of her college degree and retired from Chrysler after a career as an executive assistant. She loved to travel, especially to her birthplace of Lafferty, Ohio. She was a member of the Chrysler Retirees Club, active in her church, and as her family said, "active in overseeing us." They are sure she will continue that endeavor.
