David A. Armour

David A. Armour Grove City, Pennsylvania Historian, Author, and former Administrator for the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, succumbed to cancer April 28, 2010 at the age of 72. He was the son of Arthur and Marian Bowie Armour of Grove City and attended school there. He received a bachelor's degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1959, and his master's and doctorate degrees in history from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. He taught at the University of Wisconsin for four years before serving 36 years as Deputy Director for Mackinac State Historic Parks under the Mackinac Island State Park Commission in Michigan. During this time, he restored or reconstructed over 40 Historic buildings, authored seven books, wrote over 60 articles, did numerous book reviews, and obtained and administered over $7,000,000 in grants. Following his retirement, the visitor center at Historic Mill Creek State Park was named in his honor. He received numerous professional honors, including the President's Award for Distinguished Service to Museums from the Michigan Museum Association given to him upon his retirement, and consulted on numerous restoration projects. Dr. Armour also taught Colonial American History at Calvin College and Grove City College. He had a love for the Hmong Christian Ministry at Grand Ledge, Lansing. On Mackinac Island, he worked with college students and Jamaican workers in their worship services. He was an elder at River Terrace Church in East Lansing and later at Covenant CRC in Grand Ledge. He served on the vestry at Trinity Episcopal Church on Mackinac Island. The Armours moved back to Grove City in 2004 where he taught at Grove City College, taught History to homeschooled neighborhood children, and English to foreign exchange students. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Grace, and four children and their families, Marian Armour-Gemmen and Randall Gemmen and their children, Angelyn and Ellena, of Morgantown, West Virginia; Arthur Armour and Rebecca Lew and their children, Samuel and John, of Portland, Oregon; David Armour and Joanna Tong and their children, David, Keith, and Michael, of Bellevue, Washington; Anneke and Matthew Myers of Mackinac Island. His family also includes two sisters and a brother, Nancy and Doug Johnson of Davidsonville, Maryland, Tom and Lois Armour of Grove City, Maryann and Al Fearon of Bolivar, Ohio, his in-laws, Alice and Bill Heese of Akron, Ohio, Ed (deceased) and Jan Lootsma of Mystic, Connecticut, Els (deceased) and Gys Kooy of Mahwah, New Jersey, Henry and Grace Lootsma of North Haledon, New Jersey, the late Wayne Lootsma, Ann and John Barr of Bridgewater, Virginia, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at the family home, 432 West Washington Boulevard, Grove City, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 2, with a memorial service Monday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m. at Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian Church. A memorial service also will be held Wednesday, May 5, at 4 p.m. River Terrace Church in East Lansing, Michigan. A memorial service and interment will be on Mackinac Island later this spring. He was a decorated veteran of the Korean War with the U.S. Army, receiving 7 Bronze Stars as a Tank Commander. Hank worked with Silver Lead Paint Co. as a commerical painter for over 20 years, but then retired from Oldsmobile after 10 years of service in 1995. Juan Antonio "John"Gonzalez Charlotte Age 64, passed away on April 29, 2010 surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Laredo, Texas and graduated from Gabriels Catholic High School in Lansing, MI. Juan served 2 tours in Vietnam as a Marine and in 1997 retired from the Meridian Township Police Department after 25 years of service. He was re-introduced to a Jr. High friend, Judy Hoisington and later married her. He and Judy opened their home to numerous foster children over the years and added something to all of their lives. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, kindness, and devotion to his family and friends. He spent much of his time golfing, bowling, playing with his grandchildren and sharing time with family and friends. His strength and courage to handle whatever life had in store is one of his many attributes. LeRoy was born Jan. 31, 1939, in Marion, Ohio, a son to the late Paris and Evelyn (Blinn) Graybill. LeRoy had served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1959. On July 16, 1966, he married Linda Powell in District Heights, Md. He had made his home in Colon for the past four years coming from Burr Oak. Early in life LeRoy had worked in construction, he later became a self employed truck driver, retiring in 2002. He enjoyed camping, fishing and especially loved time spent with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Linda of Colon; three children, Rhonda (Gary) Spidle of Paw Paw, Randy (Tina) Graybill of Bronson; and Helen (Matt) Pastrick of Kalamazoo; and six grandchildren, Amber Larsen, Tyler Graybill, Courtney Craft, Autum Larsen, Logan Graybill and Camelle Craft and sister in-law-Judith (Norman) Lovejoy of Floral City, Fla. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of LeRoy J. Graybill will be Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon, with Pastor Alvin Brammer and Rev. Charlotte Ellison officiating. Leslie Dean Akins, 74, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Thursday morning, April 29, 2010, at his home. He was born Jan. 10, 1936, in Bronson, Mich., a son of the late Huber and Noma (Arthur) Akins. Leslie had resided in Sturgis since 1955. His early life was lived in the Bronson and Sherwood area and he graduated from Bronson High School with the class of 1954. On Oct. 21, 1955, he married Katherine G. Cameron in Washtenaw County, Mich. He had been employed as a machinist at Burr Oak Tool & Gauge in Sturgis for 25 years. For over 20 years he and his wife owned and operated K&L Sharpening Service in Sturgis. He was proud to have served his country from March 30, 1953 to March 29, 1956 in the U.S. Army during the Korean War earning the rank of Specialist. Leslie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis for over 50 years. He was also a past member of Sturgis Jaycees. For many years he served as a 4-H leader and was involved with horses and taught leather craft. He enjoyed camping and loved time spent with his family. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of nearly 55 years, Kay; one daughter, Amy (Frank) Kulpinski of Sturgis; six grandchildren, Melissa (Doug) Jenkins, Ben (Angie) Leeth, Erin Kulpinski, Hank Kulpinski, Morgan (Dean) Chandler and Logan Kulpinski; one brother, John Akins of Sturgis and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Kathy Akins and Pamela Leeth; one brother, Richard Akins; and one sister, Carolyn J. Loerch. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 10-10:45 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis where a memorial service celebrating the life of Leslie Dean Akins will begin at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Michael Wicks will officiate. A flag presentation will be conferred by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. The Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. He is survived by his life partner, Phyllis Fockler, and a daughter, Debra R. (Dawn) LaCross; also by a brother, Dallas (Karen) LaCross of Davison; and four sisters, Mary Ellen Lewis of Davison, Ann Kouder of Sturgis, Mildred Gordon of California and Marlene (Robin) Pittenger of Otisville; 10 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sons, Darald R. LaCross in 1998 and Dennis R. LaCross in 2004 . Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Young Funeral Home  in Lake City, with Rev. Lois Payne, 57, of Cheboygan, passed away Saturday April 24, 2010 at her home with her loving family at her side. She was born in Detroit Oct. 19, 1951 to Frank and Phyllis Fisher. Lois married Robert Payne Sept. 16, 2001 in Cheboygan. She was employed for several years as a waitress, a job she loved. Later she was employed at Cheboygan Health Care Center as a nursing assistant. Lois had a very good sense of humor, she love animals and flowers. She was so proud of being selected as an award winner by the Cheboygan Garden Club for her flowers. Lois also was a very good cook and loved to entertain. Lois was preceded in death by her husband Robert (Oct. 15, 2008) and her parents. She is survived by her children, Sean Richey of Roseville, Kelly (Marie) Richey of Kalamazoo, Chandra Richey of Cheboygan, Thomas Payne of Grand Blanc, Robert Payne Jr. of Cheboygan and Scott Payne of Flint; grandchildren Alex of Kalamazoo, Ashley, Matthew and Andrew of Flushing and Lauren of Cheboygan; brother Donald (Shirley) White of North Carolina and Frank Fisher of Mackinaw City. Lucille B. Shedd, age 87, of Adrian died Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Provincial House. She was born Oct. 20, 1922, in Hodges, Ala., to David and Lillie (West) Vernon. On Dec.19, 1945, she married O’Neal Shedd. He preceded her in death on July 12, 1993. Lucille had been employed as a seamstress at several area clothing stores, including Klines for 28 years, Michael Roberts Men Store, and Maurices. She enjoyed sewing and had many longtime, loyal customers. She loved the Detroit Pistons and Tigers and going to Amish Country in Ohio and Indiana with her daughter and son-in-law. She enjoyed visiting with friends. She dearly loved her family and was especially proud of her granddaughter, Amy, and great-grandson, Ian. Lucille is survived by a daughter, Margaret (Nelson) Clough of Blissfield; a granddaughter, Amy (Joseph) Baker of Adrian; a great-grandson, Ian P. Baker; and a few nieces and nephews. In addition to husband, O’Neal, she was preceded in death by three sisters, a twin sister, Rosalee, at birth, Rosemary in infancy, and Nellie Lay; five brothers, J.E. Vernon, Denver Vernon, J.C. Vernon, Earl Vernon and Lloyd Vernon. Visitation for Lucille will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Whitney Brown officiating. Interment of ashes will follow at East Gilead Cemetery in Bronson. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. at Dutcher-Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. Margaret was born Dec. 17, 1920 in Belmont, Va. to Luther and Esther (Zigler) Mason. Her mother, Esther, died when she was very young and knew her stepmother Edith (Snead) Mason as her mom. She married Rolland G. Norton on Oct. 23, 1948 at Mt. Herman Church in Virginia. Margaret came to Bronson in 1946 and had taught home economics in the Bronson Public Schools. Her great love of reading led her to establish the first organized library for Bronson High School in 1965, continuing to work there until her retirement in 1974. She then went to work for the Sturgis Public Library for 11 years and continued to volunteer at the Branch County Public Library as well as Bronson High School library for many more years. Mart had attended Bethel-Gilead Community Church for many years and was currently an active member of the Church of the Brethren in Beacon Heights, Ind. Mrs. Norton belonged to the American Library Association, AARP, Farm Bureau, MARSP and was a longtime 4-H Leader in home economics. She loved cooking, sewing and being able to teach her skills to others. Mart loved music, having taught herself to play piano as a child and her own children to sing as well. She had a lifetime of questioning and challenging the status quo, always wondering if it could be better. She was a Lady. Margaret is survived by her husband Rolland, her sons Kenneth Norton of Gilead Twp. and Dale (Bobbi) Norton of Bethel Twp., daughters Jean (Dave VanDerKamp) Norton of Bettendorf, Iowa and Susan (Michael) Gilbert of Lurgan, North Ireland, brothers Joseph (Dorotha) Mason of N. Manchester, Ind., Marion (Joan) Mason of Bridgewater, Va. and John (Peggy) Mason of Charlottesville, Va., her “German daughter” Britt and her “Russian granddaughter” Irina, her grandchildren Josh, Erica, Seth and Michael Norton, Chrys VanDerKamp, Daniel and Matthew and Benjamin Gilbert and great-grandsons Tanner and Drew Norton. Mrs. Mary Ellen Linn, 43, most recently of Keystone Heights, Fla. passed away from complications due to Multiple Sclerosis at her home on Friday, April 23, 2010.  Mary was born on Nov. 7, 1966 in Kalamazoo and was raised in Bronson, where she graduated high school with honors. She received her B.S. degree in Biology at Michigan State University in 1988 before serving as a secondary chemistry and biology teacher in Ohio and later Florida, where she married her husband in Crescent City, Fla. in 1993. She later earned her Specialist Degree in School Psychology at the University of Central Florida in 1995 before serving as school psychologist in St. Augustine (Fla.), Adrian and Lancaster (Pa.). She returned to Florida in recent years to focus on raising her family. Mary touched the lives of so many students and cherished her work in education. She also was a faithful Christian, serving as Sunday school teacher in the St. John’s Episcopal Church of Marietta, Pa. She was also active as a member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Society at UCF and MSU, where she was also a proud member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.  She struggled greatly with MS in recent years but never gave up her spirit or fight, always in hope of a cure. She is survived by her husband of 17 years Robert Linn and their two precious children, Trent James Linn (12) and Aubrey Elizabeth Linn (8), all currently of Keystone Heights, Fla.; parents Norman Eugene Lahrke of Coldwater and Elizabeth (Bond) Cranson of Middlebury, Ind.; sisters Susan Mueller of Angola, Ind. and Diane Zuckswertz of Owosso. She is also survived by her in-laws, Gary and Rebecca Linn of Ocala, Fla.  A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Don Corbit officiating. Following the service, a gathering to celebrate Mary’s wonderful gifts and contributions to the lives of so many will be held in their lakefront cottage. Merle M. Bontrager, age 69, of Brutus, died April 28, 2010, at his home, surrounded by family. Merle was born at home on April 8, 1941, in Bristol, Ind., the son of Menno and Lizzie (Miller) Bontrager.  He grew up in Centerville, Mich., and attended Centerville High School. Merle entered the US Navy in 1958 and proudly served his country for 22 years, retiring in 1982 as an ENCS.  During his career, he received four Good Conduct Awards, the Navy “E” USS Grand Rapids, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V, National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. On July 31, 1960, Merle married Naomi Elizabeth Burkhart in Sturgis, Mich. She survives. Merle was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Brutus and the VFW.  He enjoyed riding motorcycles, had a knack for fixing lawnmowers and snowmobiles, and was a proud grandpa. After the Navy, Merle worked several other jobs, including truck driver, mechanic, and school bus driver for Pellston Schools. He is survived by his wife, Naomi (Burkhart) Bontrager; two children, Douglas (Maria) Bontrager and Suzette (James) Peplinski; four grandchildren, Jamie Kent, Zachary Bontrager, Dominik Peplinski, and Karina Peplinski; three siblings, Vera (Harvey) Bontrager, Richard (Marshia) Bontrager, and Earle (Melanie) Bontrager; two foster-sisters, Katie (Miller) Davidhizer and Amelia (Miller) Yoder; and by many nieces and nephews, He was preceded in death by his parents, Menno M. and Lizzie C. (Miller) Bontrager; foster parents, John and Susan (Bontrager) Miller; infant daughter, Dawn J. Bontrager; and two siblings, Opal Bontrager and Orville Jay Bontrager. A memorial service will be held at 3: p.m. today at the Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey with Pastor Leroy Sutfin officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the time of service. She also loved sewing and often donated items to area churches and those who were homeless.   On Jan. 9, 1948, she married Clio Jones and he preceded her in death in 1988. Survivors include two sons, James (Janice) Jones, Paulding, Ohio and Jeffery Jones, Jackson; one sister, Arlene (Paul) Billman, Pittsford; three brothers, Arlo (Florence) Lane, Hudson, Arling (Mary) Lane, Reading and Arvin (Jackie) Lane, Hillsdale; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.   In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother.   A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor David Tran officiating. She married Charles McNair on June 15, 1940, in Pittsford and he preceded her in death on March 7, 1993.                 Surviving Ethel are two daughters, Judy McNair of Coldwater and Nancy (Robert) Aldrich of Pulaski, New York; two sons, Paul (Janice) McNair of Jonesville and Jerry (Pam) McNair of North Adams; one daughter-in-law, Carol McNair of Jonesville; two sisters, Grace Johnson of Adrian and Donna Dolson of Jackson; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.                            She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, DeWayne, two sisters, six brothers and one daughter in infancy.   Funeral services for Ethel will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Eric Sass officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson. She was born June 18, 1920, in Ypsilanti, to Oran and Maud (Boles) Brown.   She was married to Harold Davis and he preceded her in death in 1979. She later married Claude Reed on June 8, 1988 and he survives.   Eunice was an active member of the Hillsdale Free Methodist Church. She loved the nature and especially enjoyed bird watching. She and Claude spent the past several winters in Cape Coral, Fla. and one of her favorite past times was spending time with her entire family.   Surviving besides her husband Claude are daughters, Gwendolyn (Gene) Fry of Mexico, Mo., Henreitta Badgley of Plymouth, Susan (Mike) Monroe, doing missionary work in Costa Rica and Cindy (Al) Eckhardt of Hillsdale; sons, Bo Davis of Cape Coral, Fla. and Phillip (Chris) Reed of Bellaire; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Janet Martin of Comstock Park.   She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Harold; son, Jim Reed; a brother, Buddy and a great-granddaughter.   Funeral services for Eunice Reed will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hillsdale Free Methodist Church with Pastor Keith Porter officiating. He loved Harley Davidson motorcycles and classic tractors.   Surviving, besides his wife Karen, are three sons, Dave Kisner and Dan Kisner of Las Vegas, Nev., John (Kristen) of Virginia; one daughter, Theresa Tomlin of Addison; six grandchildren; two brothers, Dale (Freida) Kisner of Hudson, Jerry (Mary) Kisner of Monroe; one sister, Kathleen (Richard) Cole of Hillsdale and several nephews and nieces.   Cremation will take place. Reverend Dr. Peggy Lynne Miller Riethmiller Blackman Age 71, of Madison, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010. She was the daughter of the late Orlo and Dorothy Shoulders Miller. She received her Bachelor's in Education from the University of Wisconsin and her Master's and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. She first taught in public schools in Illinois and in Wisconsin. She served in student services at Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan for three years. She retired from Michigan State University as Professor Emeritus in the College of Education. Peggy was united in marriage to the Dr. M. Gorton Riethmiller and they enjoyed several years of marriage together until his death on May 29, 1984. Peggy was an ordained minister with the Congregational Christian Churches. She had served as interim pastor at churches in Durand and Portland. Peggy moved to Madison in 2001 and was united in marriage on November 15, 2003 in Wilmore, Kentucky to Charles A. Blackman Ph.D. Peggy will be missed by her husband: Charles A. Blackman Ph.D. of Madison, Indiana; her step son: Charles Wesley Blackman of Lake Worth, Florida; her sisters: Wendy Severson and her husband: John of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Sherry Welch of Falmouth, Maine; her close friend and caregiver: Dr. Sister Marie Emery O.P. of Madison, Indiana; her two nieces, two nephews and other relatives. Private graveside services will follow at a later date in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Waterloo Township in Jackson County, Michigan. A Celebration of Life Service will be Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 at Plymouth Congregational Church, 2001 E. Twyla J. McCarty, 79, of Deerfield passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, Ohio.  Twyla was born on July 18, 1930, in Adrian, Mich., the daughter of Lloyd and Adeline (Ziegler) Peavey. On Dec. 16, 1950, Twyla was united in marriage to Max “Mike” McCarty. He survives. Twyla worked as a bank teller for numerous years. She started out in Deerfield working for the Revco Credit Union. She then moved to the Deerfield State Bank, which later changed hands and was known as National City, where she eventually retired. In earlier years, Twyla was also employed by Applewood Orchards in Deerfield. In her retirement, Twyla has been a volunteer with the Flower Hospital Ladies Auxiliary for the past 17 years. She had a love for many things, including quilting, animals of all kinds, gardening and especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Twyla was a very active member of the Deerfield United Methodist Church, where she helped organize and plan many events. She had a kind spirit and giving heart and was willing to help anyone who needed it. She will be deeply missed by so many. Surviving  is her husband, Max “Mike” McCarty of Deerfield; two daughters, Mashelle “Mickey” (James) Converse of Clearwater, Fla., and Roxann (Tim Grassley) McCarty of Sebastian, Fla.; two sisters, Marilyn (Douglas) Zook and Lois Doan; three half brothers, Lloyd L. Peavey , Jr., Allen Peavey and John E. Peavey; one half sister, Elaine Rogers; two granddaughters, Deeana (Dan) Eckley and Danella (Eugene) Camoosa; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Stella Peavey; her stepmother, Lillian Peavey; and two sisters, Lillian Dennis and Bertine Dye. Funeral services for Twyla will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Deerfield United Methodist Church in Deerfield with the Rev. Mike Clemmer officiating. Burial will follow in Deerfield Cemetery in Deerfield. She enjoyed music and was active in the Sweet Adelienes Group for several years. Virginia also did volunteer work for the Sturgis pregnancy helpline and served as an AARP tax aide. Surviving are three children, Joel D. Reed of Austin, Texas, Jonathan Reed of Plano, Texas, and Shelley Ann Reed of Alameda, Calif.; three grandchildren, Melinda, Sean and James; a brother, David Jacobs of Oklahoma; a sister, Karyl-Lynne Reed of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
