Aleen Cross

Aleen Cross Aleen Cross (July 23, 1924), resident of East Lansing for 49 years, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2010, of natural causes, mostly attributable to Parkinson's Disease. The daughter of a Presbyterian minister and his wife, also devoted to the church, Aleen adopted her faith and love for family early. These remained her essential defining qualities throughout her life. She was a gentle, emotive, thoughtful, compassionate person; always giving, never taking; always helping but never expecting anything in return; always half-full, never half-empty. She began her adult life as a nurse, in which capacity she met her future husband, Aureal, in a Pittsburgh, PA, hospital. They were a devoted couple from that time forth. She was the chief cook, bottle washer, rock wrapper, psychological counselor, master of arms, team leader and champion for her family. Although gentle, unassuming and never one to force her ideas onto others, she knew and taught right from wrong, acceptance and embracement instead of prejudice and bigotry, forgiveness instead of revenge, that hope trumps despair. After her kids were no longer her direct responsibility, she returned to nursing practice at Sparrow Hospital ICU/CCU for over 15 years. She was a soft-spoken leader in all the churches of which she was a member. During her 49 years membership in the First Presbyterian Church, Lansing, she enabled several important programs, including co-chair of the sesquicentennial committee, co-founder of the history committee, Christian education, participant in youth mission trips, and facilitated development of the library. In the community, she was active with Meals-on-Wheels and Capitol Area Literacy Coalition. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Aureal T. Cross, Professor Emeritus of Geology and Botany at MSU, her children, Timothy (Margaret), Jonathan (Nicolette), Christopher (Nancy), all of Denver, Colorado, Christina (Cliff) Collier of Austin, Texas, Cheryl (Richard) Bowman of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, her brother, Charles (Mary Lois) of West End, North Carolina, and 14 grandchildren who benefited from her love and gentle guidance. The memorial service is at First Presbyterian Church, 510 E. Ottawa Street, Lansing on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund or a charity of your choice. On line condolences may be made at:

Ella A. Hartman

Ella A. Hartman Lansing Township At the wonderful age of 108 year old, Ella passed away Friday, April 30, 2010 in Lansing Township surrounded by her loving family. Ella was born January 23, 1902 in Montcalm County, Michigan and was the daughter of Ernest and Martha (Tottingham) Conklin. Ella loved to knit, crochet, read and was a good cook. She made mittens, scarves, and baby blankets for her grandbabies, and could make a mean Lemon Meringue Pie! Ella married William "Bill" Hartman on September 25, 1920 in Vestaburg, MI and they celebrated 56 years of marriage before his death in July 1977. They built several homes and lived in the Lansing area for many years. In 1955 they bought the "Maple Grove Resort" in Gaylord, Michigan where they rented 8 cabins year round. They had people from all over Michigan that would stay summer and winter, vacationing, skiing or snowmobiling. After 20 years of hard work and making many friends, they sold the resort and moved back to Lansing, where they lived in the Delta Township area and spent winters in Florida until Bill passed away. When the Waverly 39'ers formed, Ella was one of the original people that attended and had been very active for many years. She was the designated greeter for the new people that attended and always had a happy "Hello, we're so glad you're here" greeting along with a smile. Ella belonged to the Douglas McDonald V.F.W. Post 6132 and held the chair of Chaplains for many years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and attended every Sunday until it became hard for her to get there. She was an "Honorary Member" of the Red Hat Society of Gaylord, and a past member of the Grange Lodge in Gaylord, Michigan. Ella was a very stylish lady and served as a goodwill ambassador everywhere she went. Her family was a very important part of her life and she loved them all very much. They could never say enough about how proud they were of Ella, all of her accomplishments and what a beautiful lady she was. She was so proud of the fact that she had 6 generations of her family; something not many people can say they have. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; son, Alva E. Hartman (May 2008); grandson, Rick Allen Hartman; great-granddaughter, Eva Hartman; great-great grandsons, Jared Campau, and Blake Joseph Smith, II; and sister, Edith Gould. Surviving are her children, Kenneth (Nora) Hartman, Arlene Henderson Carey, Jan Hatt; daughter-in-law, Florence Hartman; grandchildren, Patty Doll, Barry Hartman, Nancy (Larry) Drolett, Larry (Eleanore) Hartman, Gary Hartman, Linda Bachtel, Jackie (Roy) Lovaas, Chuck (Linda) Henderson, Honey Deon (David) Bentley, Kim (David) Baker, Micki Smith, and Jill Sweet; 24 great-grandchildren; 25 great great-grandchildren; 2 great great great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 6, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 7533 W. St. Joseph, Lansing with Pastor Rae Franke officiating. There will be visitation 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Interment is 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A special thanks to the staff of Gardner Adult Foster Care for their loving care to Ella during her short stay. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice in memory of Ella. You may also visit the guest book at

Wendell Westcott

Wendell Westcott East Lansing Wendell Westcott, renowned carillonneur at MSU's Beaumont Tower and beloved community figure, passed away at home on April 30, 2010, surrounded by family. Wendell was born on January 20, 1911, in Jackson, Michigan, where he soon established himself as a child prodigy at the piano. By age 14, he was the assistant organist at the Methodist Church in Jackson. Because of his remarkable abilities, he was admitted to the MSU School of Music on full scholarship, where he studied piano and eventually received his M.A. With the advent of World War II, Wendell enlisted in the U. S. Army and was stationed in Cairo, Egypt, where he served as accompanist to an Army chaplain. Upon returning from the war, he served as a professor in the MSU Department of Music where he taught piano. In the early 1950s, the head of the Music Department asked Wendell if he would be interested in playing the carillon in Beaumont Tower. Wendell accepted the offer and soon established a reputation in the East Lansing community for his wonderful playing. In 1956, Wendell attended the Royal Carillon School in Mechelin, Belgium, where he pursued an advanced degree in the carillon. There he earned highest honors for playing and composition, an unprecedented achievement. He returned to MSU where he continued to teach piano and carillon until his retirement. Though Wendell is known primarily for his carillon playing, he was particularly proud of his creation of the Spartan Bellringers in the mid-1950s. The Spartan Bellringers were a handbell group that Wendell forged into a human carillon, able to perform musical pieces with great speed and complexity. The routine they developed was tremendously popular, and The Spartan Bellringers subsequently went on tour all over the United States, even performing for Vice-President Richard Nixon at a White House tree-lighting ceremony. In 197O Wendell published a book, Bells and Their Music, which is still considered the authoritative work on the subject. He also wrote the articles on bells for Encyclopedia Brittannica during that period. In recent decades, Wendell delighted MSU students, East Lansing residents, and visitors to the MSU campus with his free carillon concerts at Beaumont Tower. It became an MSU tradition for students and families to lounge on the campus lawns and listen to his music. Wendell also delighted fans by inviting them into Beaumont Tower, where they climbed the winding stairs, signed the guest book, and watched him play the carillon. Wendell loved these interactions with the public, and he was instrumental in the restoration and rededication of Beaumont Tower and its carillon in the 1990s. At age 93, Wendell played the carillon for the National Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, who were specially bused to MSU from an Ann Arbor Convention. There, surrounded by the most accomplished carillonneurs in the country, Wendell gave an impeccable virtuoso performance. Wendell continued play the carillon at Beaumont Tower until the age of 96 when vertigo made it no longer possible for him to ascend the stairs. He credited that daily ascent, however, with his extraordinary health, vigor and longevity. After Wendell retired from carillon playing, he continued to play the piano at his home for four hours a day until his hearing gave out at the age of 97. He passed away at the age of 99. Wendell was preceded in death by his daughter, Alicia, in 1994. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Iris. He is also survived by his daughter Gina, his son-in-law David, and his two grandchildren, Rebekah and Michael. In New York, he is survived by son-in-law Bryan, and two grandchildren, Hester and Gretchen. There are also three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Delilah and Levi. Wendell Westcott was an icon in the Greater Lansing community and an international figure in the world of carillon. He will be remembered with fondness by friends, colleagues, and generations of adoring fans. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 4, at Gorsline Runciman East Chapel, 1730 East Grand River Avenue, East Lansing, from 1:00-2:00 and services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Ed Reynolds of Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Lansing officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice in memory of Wendell.
