Alvin Leroy Faust — 'Junior' and 'Papa'

Monday, October 5, 2009 12:05 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Alvin Leroy Faust, “Junior” and “Papa,” age 66, of Britton passed away suddenly on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at Herrick Medical Center. Alvin was born at his family farm on Laberdee Road in Britton on June 16, 1943. He was the son of Alvin and Emily (Griewahn) Faust. On Nov. 21, 1964, he married Linda Lou DeJonghe of Ridgeway and she preceded him in death on Oct. 11, 2007. Alvin attended Blissfield High School until he began working for General Motors, Willow Run, at the age of 18 until he retired. Alvin was a lifelong farmer and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, family gatherings at the lake, giving rides in his gator, and camping with his family. Alvin was a strong supporter of buying American and supporting the American worker. One of Alvin’s fondest desires was to have his family farm reach centennial status in just six years. We’ll miss Papa but now he is with Mimi, all of his John Deere tractors will start without needing “special” modifications, he’ll have Strohs beer that is always cold, and an eternal supply of hot sauce. Alvin was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother, Charles Faust; and brother-in-law, Edwin Hansen. He is survived by his son, Jeff Faust of Crystal Lake, Ill., and his two daughters, Leah (Tom) Bilan and their sons, Justin and Luke, of Monroe, and Jody Faust and sons, Jacob and Austin, of Stockbridge. Also surviving are Alvin’s siblings, Doris Hansen of Albion and Donald Faust of Manitou Beach. Visitation will be at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh with the Rev. Father Daniel Wheeler as Celebrant. In state at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Rite of Committal to follow at Ridgeway Cemetery. Raymond Meckley

Sunday, October 4, 2009 3:52 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Raymond E. Meckley, 82, of Fort Myers, Fla., passed peacefully with his wife, Louise at his side on Monday Sept. 14, 2009. He was born Feb. 24, 1927, and was the first-born child of Clifford E. and Ann Meckley of Colfax, Iowa. Ray proudly served his country during World War II as a gunner on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Raymond married Andrew and Florence Leutheuser’s youngest child, Louise in their hometown of Somerset, Mich. on Oct. 12, 1956. His love of farming combined with a business degree from Simpson College made it a natural fit for him to start Flavor Fruit Farm in Somerset Center. Over the years Raymond developed a flourishing apple business for the local community. From the Fall Apple Smorgasbords to his pictorial fruit displays at the Michigan State Fair, Ray earned winning ribbons and many compliments. After the December 1976 fire at Flavor Fruit Farm, Raymond rebuilt the business with the help of his wife Louise and their children. Coming to the orchard on the weekend meant hayrides, apples, roasted almonds, doughnuts and cider, along with apple butter, and hotdogs at the fire pit. You could always remember the thrill of being able to pick your own apple or cherries from a tree in the orchard. Raymond loved seeing all the people that came by to say Hi and share a moment with him. No matter what was discussed Raymond could joke and find a way to make his point like an arrow hitting the bulls-eye. As the seasons changed Raymond found new interests in life upon retiring from the daily business of running the orchard. He enjoyed fishing and watching boats pass by on the river outside his home in Fort Myers, Florida. He is survived by his loving wife Louise, children, Edward Meckley of Somerset; Phillip (Robin) Meckley of Fullerton, Calif.; Beth (Kevin) Wiesman of Somerset Center; John Meckley of Santa Barbara, Calif.; Steven (Kim) Meckley of Lake LeAnn; and Sarah (Brent) Brewster of N. Ft. Myers, Fla. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Margaret Owens of Fairbank, Iowa; Robert Meckley of Egan, Minn.; Joan Stiffler of Montezuma, Iowa; Gene Meckley of Colfax, Iowa and Susan Grove of Okeechobee, Fla. Raymond is also survived by his 17 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service in celebration of Raymond’s life and marriage of 53 years will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12 at the Flavor Fruit Farm, Somerset Center, with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers FL 33908.
