Clifford R. Gearhart

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 11:45 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Clifford R. Gearhart, 96, Wolverine, passed away Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009. Cliff was born May 6, 1913 in West Decatur (Blue Ball), Pennsylvania to Burtis Belford Gearhart and Hazel Shontz Gearhart. He had three sisters: Anna (Gearhart) Hinmon, Margaret who died in childhood, and Bernie (Gearhart) Sexton who survives him. Cliff spent his early years on the family farm fishing, hunting, trapping, ice skating and enjoying Sunday school picnics. He worked in his father’s grocery store in Blue Ball during the 1920’s and one of his first jobs was sorting and bagging potatoes. In 1923, Cliff sold his very first Christmas tree to his Aunt Pearl for 35 cents. Later, he and his father traveled to northern lower Michigan to buy and cut wild evergreens to sell at roadside stands. He married Lucille Esther Beach Oct. 1, 1936 in Pontiac.  They had two daughters and two sons.  After the death of wife Lucille, Cliff married Delores Hudson in 1997. Cliff was an avid fly fisherman and kept returning to northern Michigan. In 1939 Cliff and Lucille bought property south of Wolverine across from the West Branch of the Sturgeon River. Cliff hand-planted his first evergreen trees in 1943 on his property. Through the years this enterprise grew and Cliff and his family established "North Star Trees".  In 1959 he was elected president of the Michigan Christmas Tree Growers Association.  Cliff was named "Michigan 1991 Tree Farmer of the Year". The tree business was seasonal, so from the mid 1940s to the early 1960s, Cliff took advantage of the off season to develop a commercial fishery, "Gearhart Fish and Evergreen" in Brimley, in Michigan’s upper peninsula.  This was a creative way to utilize his interests in both trees and fish. Cliff authored two autobiographical books, "The Love of Trees" and "The Fish Peddler". In his later years he enjoyed wood carving, especially fish and birds. He often delighted his family members and friends with his original birthday poems. Cliff was drafted and served his country in World War II in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division. Cliff was preceded in death by his wife Lucille in 1995. He is survived by his children, Martha (Gearhart) and Gordon Evoy, Jean (Gearhart) and Dan Coale, Dan and Becky (Howard) Gearhart and Dave and Carol (Reeves) Gearhart, all of whom reside in the Wolverine area; 15  grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Officiating at the funeral service Sunday was Rev. Les Sellers and Rev. David Gearhart, with burial in the Silver Lake Cemetery in Wolverine. Visitation was held at Lintz Funeral Home in Indian River. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to direct their memorial contributions to the Berean Bible Church of Topinabee. Online condolences may be made at www.stonefuneralhomeinc.com.

She found time to travel often with her husband on many of his business trips for the Kirsch Company and L.C. Clark publishing of Jupiter, Florida. For many years, Nadyne was involved in various local school and hospital activities, especially the Sturgis Hospital guilds and fundraisers. She served as co-chairperson of the hospital gift shop guild for several years. From 1975-1976 she served as the president of the Hospital Auxiliary. In her Jupiter, Fla., condo community she served as co-chairperson of the entertainment committee for several years and was very active in the bridge group. She was an avid reader and enjoyed swimming. Nadyne had a true passion for the game of bridge and was an original member of a bridge club in Sturgis that has survived for more than 50 years. In recent years she had suffered from numerous health problems that limited her activities. Her ready smile, quiet, pleasant manner and excellent cooking will be long remembered and sorely missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, John Jay; two daughters, Leanne Schoenherr of Kalamazoo and Mary (Dave) Gebhardt of Grand Rapids; a son, John R. Lichty of Shawnee, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Anna, Kate, Jay, Sarah, Alex, Debbie, David and Dan; eight great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Marjorie “Midge” Culbertson and Eugenia Poynter, both of Bryan, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. Nancy Dee Tolford-Bissett

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 9:10 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Sept. 18, 1936-Oct. 11, 2009 Nancy was born in Jamestown, N.Y., to James Tolford and Sally Rodabaugh in the fall of 1936. She grew up in Lenawee County with her natural siblings, Diane, Duane, Danny and Desira. During Nancy’s adulthood, her widowed mother married Sy Rodabaugh who brought nine more siblings into their family. Sy still lives in Brooklyn, Mich., at the age of 91 years old. Nancy attended Adrian schools until her senior year and graduated from Onsted High School in 1954. She met her first husband, Ivan Stuart, and soon married, following him to Puerto Rico. She lived on the Caribbean Island for 23 years with their children, James (Christine) Stuart, Debbie Marine and Sally (Rev. Ervin) York. The years in Puerto Rico developed a love and passion in Nancy for less fortunate ones. She became a fine seamstress, often making garments for the neighborhood women with perhaps a chicken for pay. They would call her “la gringa” as a term of endearment because she never failed to charm all those she met. She began her lifetime career as an activity director and caregiver with the Department of Aging in Utuado. Her love for the elderly continued throughout her life. Nancy immersed herself in the Spanish culture, was involved in the children’s school plays and quickly mastered their native language. Nancy brought into the children’s lives her heritage; a love for the Michigan Wolverines, homemade doughnuts, carving pumpkins and the game of poker. After the children were all adults Nancy moved back to Michigan, her home state, to spend the next phase of her journey near her family. At the age of 48 years old, she learned to play golf and demonstrated mastery when she made two holes-in-one, which were witnessed by partners and siblings alike. Nancy was very competitive and loved to show all her grandchildren how to improve their game. In 1984 she met and married George Bissett from Toledo, Ohio, where she quickly adapted to a new life of friends and golf. They shared the same passion for this sport and dancing. On the dance floor, Nancy and George could sweep a floor together with much grace and expertise. After retirement they came to Hillsdale and Nancy continued her love for senior citizens, volunteering for meals on wheels and visiting several foster homes with her baskets full of goodies. It was in Hillsdale that Nancy soon testified about her salvation experience. She attended and continued to grow as a Christian at Concord Christian Fellowship, Osseo Freewill Baptist and at Root Cellar Ministries. Nancy was blessed with 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two on the way.  Some of her favorite people, along with a special son-in-law, Jerry, were Marine, Jeannie, April, Jan, Christina, Pat and Alice, Dr. Kimball and her beloved Dr. March. Please know that you are in our hearts forever. Nancy lived life with passion and now she dances in the streets of gold in the Presence of her Lord! It is Nancy’s wish that any contributions on her behalf be sent to Root Cellar Ministries-Mission Fund. She also requested that casual attire be worn for the Memorial service. A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. at Hillsdale City Church in Hillsdale. Interment will take place at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery in Adrian. Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. To view this obituary and send condolences, visit www.eaglefuneralhomes.com.

Pastor Jim Walters

"Welcome home, thou good and faithful servant." We can just imagine the joy that Jim experienced as he walked into his Savior's arms and heard those words on Friday morning, Oct. 9, 2009; going from his loved ones at home immediately to his Lord. This is what he had looked forward to and taught all of his life. His only regret was leaving Kathleen, his wife, behind. They shared 40 years of love and work together and their's was truly a love story. Everything that Jim, as a pastor, had conveyed to couples before marriage and during marriage counseling he lived himself. Jim and Kathleen completed each other and had truly "become one".

Raymond Meckley

Sunday, October 4, 2009 3:52 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Raymond E. Meckley, 82, of Fort Myers, Fla., passed peacefully with his wife, Louise at his side on Monday Sept. 14, 2009. He was born Feb. 24, 1927, and was the first-born child of Clifford E. and Ann Meckley of Colfax, Iowa. Ray proudly served his country during World War II as a gunner on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Raymond married Andrew and Florence Leutheuser’s youngest child, Louise in their hometown of Somerset, Mich. on Oct. 12, 1956. His love of farming combined with a business degree from Simpson College made it a natural fit for him to start Flavor Fruit Farm in Somerset Center. Over the years Raymond developed a flourishing apple business for the local community. From the Fall Apple Smorgasbords to his pictorial fruit displays at the Michigan State Fair, Ray earned winning ribbons and many compliments. After the December 1976 fire at Flavor Fruit Farm, Raymond rebuilt the business with the help of his wife Louise and their children. Coming to the orchard on the weekend meant hayrides, apples, roasted almonds, doughnuts and cider, along with apple butter, and hotdogs at the fire pit. You could always remember the thrill of being able to pick your own apple or cherries from a tree in the orchard. Raymond loved seeing all the people that came by to say Hi and share a moment with him. No matter what was discussed Raymond could joke and find a way to make his point like an arrow hitting the bulls-eye. As the seasons changed Raymond found new interests in life upon retiring from the daily business of running the orchard. He enjoyed fishing and watching boats pass by on the river outside his home in Fort Myers, Florida. He is survived by his loving wife Louise, children, Edward Meckley of Somerset; Phillip (Robin) Meckley of Fullerton, Calif.; Beth (Kevin) Wiesman of Somerset Center; John Meckley of Santa Barbara, Calif.; Steven (Kim) Meckley of Lake LeAnn; and Sarah (Brent) Brewster of N. Ft. Myers, Fla. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Margaret Owens of Fairbank, Iowa; Robert Meckley of Egan, Minn.; Joan Stiffler of Montezuma, Iowa; Gene Meckley of Colfax, Iowa and Susan Grove of Okeechobee, Fla. Raymond is also survived by his 17 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service in celebration of Raymond’s life and marriage of 53 years will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12 at the Flavor Fruit Farm, Somerset Center, with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers FL 33908.
