Betty Daphne Lillian Gates Betty Daphne Lillian Gates (nee Harrison), age 84, of St. Clair Shores, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009. She was born September 21, 1925, to Henry and Edith Harrison in Sydney, Australia where she met her future husband while he was on leave during World War II. Betty left her home and family in Sydney, Australia after the war and sailed by herself to America on the USS Phoenix. On August 12, 1947, Betty was married to Kenneth L. Gates at St. John Berchmans Catholic Church, Detroit, Mich. The couple settled in St. Clair Shores to raise their four children and attended St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church. Betty retired from St. John Hospital as an accounting supervisor. Betty is survived by her children, Sandra (Dennis) Walters of St. Clair Shores, Gary (Sue) Gates of West Bloomfield, David Gates of Ann Arbor, and Warren (Debra) Gates of White Lake; grandchildren, John and Tom Walters, Nicole Gates (David) Johnston, Brian (Kim) Gates, Lindsey and Eric Gates; great-grandchildren, Jack, Alexander, and Walker Johnston. Also survived by her sister, Paloma (Keith) Crowley of Canberra, Australia. Betty's ashes will be returned to her hometown of Sydney, Australia at her request. Visitation at A.H. Duane Mercer, of Jerome passed away Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born March 6, 1921, in North Adams the son of Glen and Julia (Trumble) Mercer.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine (Pickford) Mercer whom he married on Dec. 24, 1943; his parents; one infant son and one brother, William Mercer. He is survived by three children, William (Katherine) Mercer of Albuquerque, N.M., Bonny (Ray “Tex”) Hawkins of Jonesville, and Nancy (Mark) Wilcox of Havelock, N.C.; nine grandchildren, William (Reneé) Mercer, Brenda Mercer, Brock (Robyn) Mercer, Kim (Rob) Moreland, Kelly (fiance Jim Smith) Elliott, Kristin (Scott) Deck, Ernestine (Jeff) Jones, Trudy Wilcox and Rebecca Wilcox; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Mercer was a lifelong resident of the Hillsdale County area and he lived in the oldest Sesqui-Centennial farm in the county of Hillsdale. He graduated from Addison High School and enjoyed working as a farmer for many years. He retired as a plumber after working for more than 30 years and he was a member of Local 333 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters. He also attended the Jerome United Methodist Church. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Duane Mercer will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in North Adams at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will take place in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in North Adams. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.

David L. Bauman, 53, of Colon, passed away Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Dave was born Dec. 29, 1955, in LaGrange, Ind., a son of the late Fred J. and Janet L. (Cerney) Bauman. Dave had lived all of his life in the Colon area and had attended Colon schools. He married Beth Waltke, which ended in divorce. He had worked at Wagner Pop Corn Company and Van Guard Industries, both of Colon. When Dave was able, he loved to hunt and fish, and he also loved animals. He is survived by three daughters, Terra (Christopher) Pueschel, Patricia Bauman and Katrina Bauman, all of Sturgis; six grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Ann Jones and Karen Lynn Rockwell, and a brother, Leonard A. Bauman, all of Colon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a half-brother, Edmond Drumm. The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-3 p.m. Thursday at the Schipper Funeral Home in Colon. A memorial service celebrating the life of David L. Bauman will then take place at 3 p.m., with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Burial of cremains will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Colon. David was a truck driver for Commercial Trucking and was a member of the Coldwater Eagles Lodge No. 1907, as well as being an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by companion Pamela S. Hullinger of Coldwater; daughters Jennifer Talant of Detroit, Jamie (Nick) Kurtz of Cedar Park, Texas and Bryanne (Keith) Swihart of Potterville; brothers Kenneth (Charlene) Talant of Utica and Roger E. Talant of Quincy; seven grandchildren; and one stepgranddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother. A celebration of life will be held 1 p.m. today, Oct. 21, 2009 at the Coldwater Eagles Lodge. Burial will take place at a later date in Dayburg Cemetery with Chaplain Dean Parks officiating. Flora lived in Detroit for many years and then in the Manitou Beach area since 1985. She attended Western High School in Detroit. She was formerly employed at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, retiring in 1984. She attended St. Mary On The Lake Catholic Church at Manitou Beach. Flora enjoyed arts and crafts, golfing, hunting, fishing and she loved her family and friends. She was a member of The Satellite CB Club of Downriver, the Ford Motor Girls Club, a life-time member of the Order of Eastern Star of Westgate in Detroit. She was an avid NASCAR fan at M.I.S. Surviving are three daughters, Frances Reason of Manitou Beach, Gloria (Arthur) Golden of Rockwood, Tenn., Patricia (David) Gretka of Dearborn Heights; granddaughters, Donna (Mike) Green of Cement City, Karen Reason of Fayette, Ohio, Tammy Golden of Taylor, Tracey Golden of Rockwood, Tenn., Amanda Gretka of East Lansing; grandsons, Jacob Reason of Napoleon, Michael Belous of Taylor, Mark (Melissa) Belous of Detroit, David Gretka II of Dearborn Heights; great-grandchildren, Andrew Green, Makayla Green, Mark Belous II, Alyssa Belous and Madison Belous; one brother, Richard Thomas Hall of Plymouth; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. On Nov. 27, 2000, he married Alison Hosler in Angola, Ind., and she survives. Gerald had been employed by the Lenawee County Sheriff Department for 24 years and Slusarski Excavating and Paving for 10 years. Gerald was a member of the Free and Accepted Mason of Addison, Lodge #157. In addition to his wife, Alison, he is survived by two sons, Michael VanBrunt of Onsted and Dillan VanBrunt, and a stepson, Joshua Hosler at home; five brothers, Charles (Joann) Van Brunt of Onsted and Jerry (Vivien) VanBrunt of Onsted, Floyd (Debbie) Deatrick Jr. of Adrian, Mike (Barb) Deatrick of Tecumseh and Tom (Brenda) Deatrick of Adrian; his mother-in-law, Katherine Hosler of Adrian; brothers-in-law, Norman Hosler, Gary (Rhonda) Hosler and Scott Hosler, all of Adrian; Paul (Elaine) Hosler of Kentucky; sisters-in-law, Vicky (Alton) Morgan, Becky (Fred) Regalado and Robin Mayes, all of Adrian; Dianna (Steve) Dow of McKinley Ville, Calif.; and Mary (Bruce) Boos of Bitely, Mich.; and three grandchildren, Brent, Crystal and Samantha VanBrunt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Emma VanBrunt; his stepfather, Floyd Deatrick; and one son, Robert VanBrunt. Gladys L. Paxton, 94, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born Feb. 13, 1915, in Cassopolis, a daughter to the late Cloyd and Bessie (Biederman) Holtzapple. Gladys had resided in Sturgis from 1951-1972 when she and her husband moved to Mesick, Mich., where she lived until 1992 when she returned to Sturgis. On March 29, 1935, she married Arden W. Paxton in Winamac, Ind. He died Oct. 28, 1986. Gladys was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Jack) Frohriep of Sturgis and Karen Broadworth of Sturgis; one son, Arden Paxton Jr. of Sturgis; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her parents; one daughter, Beverly Gunthorpe; one great grandson, Arden Paxton; five brothers and three sister preceded her in death. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Gladys L. Paxton will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. Calvin Kolzow of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Sturgis will officiate. Henry Marvin Ramsby, 83, Cheboygan, passed to the Lord peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009. He was born in Detroit on Sept. 22, 1926 the son of Lawrence and Leanna (Gentes) Ramsby. Upon graduation from Wolverine High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army-Air Corps and served during World War II as a fighter pilot. He enjoyed flying personal aircraft the remainder of his life. Henry was the C.E.O. and owner of Ramsby Well Drilling in Cheboygan for many years and served on the State of Michigan Well Drillers Board. He was a well respected and successful businessman with a humble, good humored and charitable nature. He enjoyed the Great Lakes and forests and was an avid fisherman and camper. He also enjoyed animals and his dogs Spike and Jack were his outdoor companions. Survivors include his beloved wife and soulmate Mary Kelley Ramsby of Cheboygan; his children, Mary (Joe) Barber of Milford, Cynthia (Charles) Jett of Cheboygan, William Kelley of Cheboygan, Henry S. (Lonna) Ramsby of Traverse City, Michael (Patti) Ramsby of Cheboygan, Timothy Ramsby of Cheboygan and Kristi (Steve) Thomas of Chelsea;  several grandchildren; and great grandchildren. He will be especially missed by his “Poppa Henry” buddies, Alex and Chloe Jett and Achilles and Antasha Barber. Visitation is today from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Christian Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 at 2 p.m. also at the funeral home. Military honors will follow the funeral service at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions in Henry’s name may be directed to the Cheboygan County Humane Society, Hospice of Little Traverse Bay or the charity of one’s choice.

Jack Chapman Slack, age 85, of Flower Mound, Texas, and a former longtime Klinger Lake and Sturgis resident, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at his home. He was born Aug. 12, 1924, in Findlay, Ohio, a son to the late Joseph and Isabelle (Chapman) Slack. Jack had resided most of his life in the Klinger Lake and Sturgis area and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1942. He furthered his education at Michigan State University and General Motors Institute. On April 16, 1949, he married Doris E. Pettyjohn in Kalamazoo. She died Jan. 9, 1994. Together with his father he owned and operated Sturgis Supply Company for several years until his retirement. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II aboard the USS Vincennes in the Pacific. He was an avid trap shooter and enjoyed the lake and hunting ducks and pheasants with his sons and many friends. Jack was dedicated to his family always supportive and proud of each one. He is survived by one daughter, Virginia (Robert) Nicols of Lakeville, Minn.; two sons, William (Barbara) Slack of Scottsdale, Ariz., and David (Bonnie) Slack of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren, David Slack, Aaron Slack, Nicholas Slack, Amanda (Matt) Welling, Blake Nicols and Libby Nicols; sister-in-law,  Isla Devries of Kalamazoo and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Survivors include his wife, Monica (Crouse) Russell; four daughters: Jamie (John) Bonham, Tracy (John) Gearhart, Amy (David) Henkel, and Stephanie Russell; grandchildren:  Danielle, Ashley, Tyler, Torrey, Dustin, Clay, Jordan, RJ, Justice, Gavin and Devin; step-grand children: Megan and Taylor; great-grand children:  Raylee, Lita, Hadrian and Ginger. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Junior graduated from Quincy High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a truck driver for Allied Products in Hillsdale for 17 years, and retired from Acorn Manufacturing Co. in Quincy after 23 years of service. He belonged to the Rathburn IOOF Lodge #167 of Quincy, the Quincy Union Church, and was a former member of the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club. Junior was an avid race-car driver and enthusiast and had raced at Butler, Angola and Manchester speedways. Survivors include his wife, Glenna (Coplin) Gary, whom he married Jan. 11, 1953; two sons, Craig (Julie) Gary of Quincy, Cam (Brenda) Gary of Coldwater; seven grandchildren, Cody, Dustin, Stacey, Benjy, Katie, Spenser and Brandon Gary; and one great-grandchild, Caylen Gary. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Earl, Clifford and Robert. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Quincy Union Church with Pastor Scott Arnold officiating. LCDR Kent A. McKnight, (US Navy Ret.), highly decorated Naval Aviator, age 78, of Jackson’s Gap, Ala. and formerly of Pensacola, Fla, passed away on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009. He was born March 26, 1931 in Flint to Harold J. McKnight and Carol Valentine McKnight. As a youngster, he moved with his family to Coldwater and graduated with "The Class of Champions" in 1949.  He was a proud 1954 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. Kent served his country in the U.S. Navy for 24 years ultimately being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was awarded several medals and commendations for his service to the country as a Naval Aviator and a veteran of Vietnam.   Kent spent much of his Naval career at both stateside bases and in the Pacific Theater. He was Patrol Plane Commander in the P2V-7 aircraft deployed to NAS Kodiak, Alaska, and Marine Corp Air Station at  Iwakuni, Japan.NAS North Island, Coronado, Calif. Antisubmarine Nuclear Weapons Delivery Instructor. Airborne Early Warning Squadron One NAS at Agana, Guam. He was the Aircraft Commander on the E121K aircraft (Super Connie) Typhoon Tracking and Airborne Early Warning Missions deployed to the Philippines, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Hong Kong, Hawaii and other Pacific Islands. During the Vietnam War, Kent was located at the Naval Air Facility, Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam as Air Operations Officer and directed Naval Air attacks with planes off the aircraft carriers. It was in Vietnam that he earned the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palms, the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Campaign Stars, the Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation and the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V. He also won the Air Medal with 2 Stars.  He was highly praised by his fellow pilots as "one of the Navy's best". He was also an educator, having taught in the public schools in Florida and at Santa Fe Junior College in Gainesville, Fla. Following retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Martha H. McKnight of Jackson’s Gap, Ala.; daughters, Janet McKnight Chernoff (Louis) of Tallahassee, Fla. and Karen McKnight Lynn (Tom) of Raleigh, N.C.; sons, Tony Allen Dorriety (Shannon) of Collierville, Tenn. and Michael Wayne Dorriety (Cathy Lee) of Oakfield, Ga.; grandchildren, Sean Hayes, Kevin Lynn and Ashlee Lynn, all of Raleigh, N.C, Michael Wayne Dorriety, currently serving in Iraq, Jesse Dorriety, Ashleigh Dorriety, Kelly Dorriety, Presley Dorriety and Grayson Dorriety, all of Collierville, Tenn.; great grandchildren, Michael Wayne Dorriety, III of Albany, Georgia and Maximus Alexander Dorriety of El Paso, Texas; and sister, Judy Clavel (James) of Yonkers, N.Y. Leslie “Les” Freeman Moose, of Osseo, passed away Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Hillsdale County. He was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Napoleon, Ohio, to Freeman and Lavina Moose. Les graduated from DeVilbis High School in Toledo, Ohio with the class of 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark and brother, Burt. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Dorothy (Lauman) Moose; three daughters, Kelly Plonka, Marie Cox and Linda Morris; one stepdaughter, Lin (Ray) Lyons; two stepsons, Gary (Nancy) Lauman and Larry (Christine) Lauman; three sisters, Beverly (Jim) Brown, Karen (Bob) Cordrey, Evon (Kenny) Rufenacht; one sister-in-law, Sue Moose; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; grandson, Jared Rose; and nieces and nephews. Les retired after managing a private estate in Perrysburg for 38 years. He served 10 years on the Sylvania Township Fire Department # 2. He was a Boy Scout leader for 18 years. After retiring he served five years on the Pittsford and Jefferson Township Fire Boards in Michigan. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Pittsford and a member of the Pittsford Lions Club for many years. His greatest joy was going to Beaumont, Texas to fish for the “Big Ones” with his son-in-law, Ray Lyons and grandsons, Justin and Damian Deaz. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Leslie “Les” Freeman Moose will be held at the First Congregational Church of Pittsford (4340 S. Interment of ashes will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at 2 p.m. at East Gilead Cemetery in Gilead Township. Loren was born March 21, 1926 in Matteson Twp. to Winfield and Ifa Jean (Knox) Weinberg. He married Phyllis (Mudrack) Williams on Dec. 10, 1966 in Ft. Wayne, Ind. Mr. Weinberg was a veteran of WW II, serving on the USS Amsterdam in the U.S. Navy. He owned and operated the Orland Lounge for many years, retiring in 1985. Loren was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and traveling. He was also and avid sports fan, especially the Detroit Tigers. Mr. Weinberg was a “Legioneer” with the Orland American Legion, Post #423, where he had served as Vice Commander. Loren is survived by his wife Phyllis, his sons Wynn (Debbie) Weinberg of Bronson, Robert Williams of Angola, Rick (Sandy) Williams of Bronson, his daughters Susan (Jerry) Jacene of Cookville, Tenn., Cathy (Phillip) Brown of Gainsboro, Tenn., Rebecca (Jim) Dohr of Tampa, Fla., Roxanne Hicks of Coldwater, Rhonda (Dan) Fuller of Auburn, his sister Joy Wagner of Colon, 28 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Loretta is survived by her mother, Juanita Smith of Adrian; a son, Owen Huff of Weed, Calif.; a daughter, Michelle (Scott) Campbell of Redding, Calif.; two brothers, Earl Barnes of Adrian and Dale (Dolores) Barnes of Onsted; a sister, Rachel Polson of Adrian; five nephews, five nieces, 10 great nephews and nieces, four stepnieces, one stepnephew, six stepgreat-nieces, four stepgreat-nephews, two stepgreat-great-nieces and one stepgreat-great nephew. She was preceded in death by her father, William B. Barnes, and a brother, Frank Barnes. Mrs. Douglas J. Marian Elizabeth Mitmesser, 96 of Coldwater went to be with her Lord Thurs. Oct. 8 2009 at Laurels of Coldwater. A Memorial service will be held on Monday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Coldwater Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Carl Schell, Rev. Philip Lindner and Steven Smith in charge. Burial has taken place at Oak Grove Cemetery at the family plot with arrangements by Gillespie Funeral Home. Marian was born Marian Elizabeth Rettray on Dec. 30, 1912 in Detroit. She was the daughter of Arthur and Maude(Hagerman) Rettray of Detroit and graduated from Eastern High School in 1932. On Feb. 4, 1934, Marian married Douglas Joseph Mitmesser in the living room of the brides parents home. On Jan. 2 1937, a son, Douglas Arthur, was born to the Mitmesser family. In 1946, Douglas, Marian, and their son Doug left Detroit and moved to Coldwater. From 1948 thru 1952 the Mitmessers owned and operated the Strand Theater in Union City, where it was a family business In Jan.1952, Douglas and Marian were blessed with a baby daughter Janie Louise. Marian was a devoted Christian wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, and was always baking her favorite recipes and sharing them with her family and friends, especially her wonderful banana breads and her famous lemon pies. Marian enjoyed working in her yard, whether it was raking leaves or shoveling snow. She loved to plant various flowers to beautify the outside of her home. For many years, once a week Marian would drive to the Branch Co. Humane Society in Quincy helping with the abandoned dogs and cats. This is what she loved to do, as she loved animals. Marian especially loved her own beloved Cocker Spaniel Chevy, who was her devoted companion and Pal. Marian attended the Coldwater Wesleyan Church for many years. She was also a member of the Coldwater Garden Club, AARP, Musical Club, and the Coldwater Grange #137. A member of the hospice organization and in years past was a Gray Lady volunteering at the hospital. Marian was also a member of the ladies group for the Coldwater Gideon’s as she and her husband were members of the Gideon’s for over 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Joseph of 51 years, her brother Horace P. Rettray and her parents. Marian is survived by her son Douglas (Clara) Mitmesser, Daughter Janie (Joseph) Hunt, four grandchildren Scott Joseph, Todd Edward, Annette Lynn, and Jason Matthew, seven great grandchildren Emma, Ellie, Joseph, Marian, Edward, Kaito, and Leina and also three nieces Gayle Wolf, Karen Davlin and Linda Jesse. Memorial may be made to Gideon’s or the Humane Society of Branch Co. in Quincy.

Naoma F. Rubley, age 82, of Bronson, died Oct. 13, 2009, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility. She had been in failing health. Services were held Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Bronson First Baptist Church with Pastor John Fields officiating. Interment followed at East Gilead Cemetery in Gilead Twp.. Naoma was born Oct. 10, 1927, in Gilead Twp., Mich., to Francis and Willow (Harley) Rubley and was a lifelong resident of Branch County. Ms. Rubley graduated from Mt. Carmel School of Nursing in Detroit. She practiced nursing at Coldwater Community Hospital and Sturgis Memorial Hospital, retiring after 25 years as an industrial nurse for the Kirsch Co. in Sturgis. Naoma had attended the Bronson First Baptist Church and spent much time gardening and bird watching, keeping diaries of the birds she would see each day. She enjoyed studying her family genealogy and playing dominos and adored her many pets over the years. Naoma is survived by her brothers, Doran (Margaret) Rubley of Albion and Richard (Daisy) Rubley of Coldwater;  her sister, Charlotte Rubley of Bellwood, Ill.; her sister-in-law, Katherine Rubley of Coldwater; and 46 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her four brothers, Gerald, Elton, Gilbert and Allen Charles Rubley; her sisters, Violet Hope Eberhard and Elaine Alice Rubley; her brother-in-law, Phillip Eberhard and her sisters-in-law, Patricia Rubley and Jean Rubley. Richard Earl Hutchinson, age 54, of Tecumseh passed away Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, from injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was born April 7, 1955, in Adrian, to William Earl and Francis Jeanne (Eberline) Hutchinson. On June 24, 1995, he married Lisa LaVoy in Tecumseh and she survives. The whole focus of Rich’s life was love of family and that love encompassed nearly all who entered his life. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Rich helped deliver Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Moose in Adrian. He volunteered with the Medical Transport Team which drives people to their doctor appointments. He loved his dog, Sophie, and he enjoyed playing golf. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three sons, Chad Hutchinson of Tecumseh, Patrick (Mavy) Morton of Texas and Matthew (Michelle) Morton of Alabama; one daughter, Melissa (Yancy) Blanchard of Louisiana; eight brothers, Larry (Kathy) of Wisconsin, John (Diana) of Arizona, Bob (Stella) of Arizona, Jim (Dallas) of Adrian, David of California, Tony of Adrian, Frank of Adrian and George of Adrian; three sisters, Judy (Kim) Bauschka of Adrian, Mary Fellers (Joe Krantz) of Ohio and Barb (Julian) De Los Santos of Adrian; a grandson, Brennen Blanchard; two granddaughters, Madison Morton and Emma Blanchard; a beloved aunt, Margie Day; and obviously, many, many nieces and nephews and in-laws and all of his “extra” sons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Fox. The funeral liturgy for Rich will be held on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Bob Schramm presiding. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, where a Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. Robert is survived by his father, William John Dunlap; brother, Dennis (Donna) Dunlap; sister, Donna (Bernie) Neal; sons, William and Dustin Dunlap; and uncle, Kenneth Jockey, as well as many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews and his Poker Stars family. Robert E. Downer, 72, beloved husband, father and grandfather, of Quincy, Mich., passed away Oct. 16, 2009, in Bradenton, Fla, at his winter home.  Robert was born Sept. 23, 1937, to Wallace and Gladys (Marquart) Downer in Hillsdale.  Both parents preceded him in death.  He graduated from Quincy High School in 1955 and married Jennie Lee Gerber on May 19, 1956.  He also attended the Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music from 1959-1962.  After graduation, he became director of Camp Selah Christian Camp, Reading, for 15 years with his wife, Jennie.  He was an active member of East Algansee Baptist Church and currently Calvary Baptist Church, Quincy.  During the winter months, he attended Fellowship Baptist in Bradenton.  He worked the majority of his life as co-owner with his father at W.E. Downer and Son Well Drilling and loved his work and all the people he met during those years. Bob and Jennie loved to travel in the U.S. and to many other countries.  They also loved fishing off their boat in Florida during the winter months. Survivors include his wife, Jennie Lee (Gerber) Downer; one son, Mark Downer, Mooresville, N.C.; one daughter, Karen (Downer) Parman, of Fayetteville, Ga.  Also surviving are two sisters, Nancy (Downer) Strang of Quincy  and Carol (Downer) Turner of Edwardsburg; five grandchildren, Kortney Parman of Atlanta, Ga., Brock Parman of Nashville, Tenn., and Mickel, Taylor and Daylee Parman of Fayetteville, Ga. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Quincy Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Frank Snyder officiating. She was married March 11, 1972 to John Rowe, he preceded her in death in 2003. Rose was affiliated with Riggs Beauty Studio for over forty years. She was a graduate of Ayersville High School in Ohio and Riggs Beauty School. She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Star Group at St. Paul’s and the St. Paul’s Guild. She was a member of the Wednesday morning quilting group at the College Baptist Church. Rose enjoyed spending time with her family and she was an avid gardener. Survivors include two sisters, Esther (Randall) Wigent of Reading and Eileen (Philip) Rohlf of Defiance; a brother, Walter (Ann) Zinser of Reading; step-son, Tom (Pat) Rowe of New York; step-grandson, John Rowe; nieces and nephews, John and Maria Zinser, Cindy (Jeff) Miller, Connie (Tom) Condon, Randy (Lori) Wigent, Chris (John) McLemore, Steve (Diane) Rohlf, Jeff (Tami) Rohlf, Dan Rohlf, Heidi (Tim) Keller; aunt Donna Leonhardt of Napoleon; and several Zinser relatives in Germany. Ruth E.Tokarz, 86, of Colon, passed away late Thursday evening, Oct. 15, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born March 7, 1923, in East Chicago, Ind., a daughter of the late Henry and Elsie (Mills) Still. Mrs. Tokarz had resided in Colon since 1997, coming from Burnham, Ill. Prior to that she had resided in East Chicago and her early life was spent in Chesterton, Ind. On Aug. 10, 1939, she married Patrick Henry in Valparaiso, Ind. He died Oct. 24, 1965. She then married Edward Tokarz on July 3, 1969, and he died Nov. 17, 1978. Following 22 years of dedicated employment as a laboratory technician with Calumet Refining, she retired in 1988. She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis and enjoyed sewing, watching television and gambling. Mrs. Tokarz loved to travel and had taken several trips to Europe and Mexico. She is survived by four daughters, Kathleen (the late Richard) Olah of Colon, Arleen (Malcolm) McQuirk of Birmingham, England, Nancy (Robert) Lawson of Suffolk, Va., and Patricia (John) Nazey of Beaufort, S.C.; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; her, husbands; a daughter, Donna Agro; five brothers; and a sister. The family will receive friends from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes  Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, where the Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Sarah E.Grismore, 83, of Scott, Ind., passed away early Saturday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Kendallville, Ind. She was born Oct. 8, 1926, a daughter of the late John and Jessie (Wisler Huff) Shimp in Scott, graduating from Scott High School with the class of 1944. Named after her paternal grandmother, she was known to friends and family of her youth as “Toots” and went by her middle name, Eileen, with friends met as an adult. Following high school, she attended and graduated from Business College in Fort Wayne, Ind. On June 6, 1947, she married Robert P. Grismore in Logansport, Ind. He preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 2000. A woman of creative talents, she enjoyed various projects and, much to her family’s appreciation, found satisfaction in discovering new recipes for salads and desserts. She was also an avid reader and regular client of the LaGrange County Bookmobile. She maintained an active lifestyle until this summer, when she admitted to “some stomach discomfort” that was diagnosed as advanced pancreatic cancer on Oct. 9, 2009. She received the diagnosis with her characteristic dignity; her primary concern was that she not be a burden to anyone. She is survived her daughter, Jody (Ronald) Vance of Kendallville; two grandsons, Robert (Alison) Vance of Kendallville and Quentin (Christina) Vance of Spring, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Cameron, Colin and Summer Vance; her beloved niece, Ruby (Robert) Haines of California; and several nieces and nephews from her late husband’s family of the Covington, Ind., area. She was preceded in death by her parents; half-sister Lucile Boehmer; half-brother Stanley Huff; and two nephews, Fred Boehmer and Orval Lee Huff. Shirley Ann Dodgson, 78, of Three Rivers, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Heartland Health Care Center in Three Rivers following a brief illness.  She was Aug. 15, 1931, in Colon, a daughter of Shirley and Leona (Kline) Burnham, and had been a lifetime resident of St. Joseph County.  Shirley was a 30-year employee of Continental Can Company in Three Rivers.  She enjoyed doing yard-work, fishing, computer games and casino trips.  She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Shirley was married June 6, 1958, to Charles “Dusty” Dodgson Jr. in LaGrange, Ind. He died in 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Alisa Evans; and a brother, Roger Burnham. She and Vinnie married in May 1970 and raised a family in Charlotte. Sue and Vinnie established Custom Home Interiors in Charlotte in 1975. Within CHI, Sue specifically developed and grew a very successful interior design department. They both worked together while raising their children, Stacey and Andy. Sue dedicated herself to her children, supporting their educational, athletic, and social endeavors to adulthood and beyond. She enjoyed gardening, interior design, reading, poems and laughing with her grandchildren. She enjoyed entertaining friends and family, playing golf, and watching MSU sporting events. Sue is survived by her husband, Vince; father, Bud Kerentoff; sisters, Sandi Kerentoff and Marty Morris; nieces, Jackie Stiles and Jodi Patton; children, Andy and Stacey; and grandchildren Jake and Lucas Kroner. W. Stewart “Stew” Niblack, Jr. age 79, of Hillsdale, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at his home. Stew was formerly of Britton and spent his winters in Haines City, Fla. He was born Aug. 2, 1930, in Hillsdale to William S. and Marjorie A. (Miner) Niblack, Sr. He graduated from Britton High School. Stew attended Hillsdale College, Wayne State School of Mortuary Science and graduated from Eastern Michigan University. On June 22, 1968, he married Cassie D. Williams. She preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 2000. Stew served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 – 1954, during the Korean War. Stew has worked for funeral homes in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek until becoming the owner and operator of the Niblack Home for Funerals in Britton form 1963 – 1975. He then worked for United Bank and Trust as Branch Office Manager in Britton until his retirement in 1992. Stew had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Britton, the Tecumseh Masons Lodge 69 and the Glen H. Daykin American Legion Post 155 in Britton. He loved to fish. Stew is survived by three sons, W. Scott Niblack and his wife, Kim of Fowlerville, Mich., W. Shawn Niblack and his wife, Carol of St. Charles, Mo. and William S. Niblack III and his wife, Natalie of Tecumseh; two daughters, Denise McCormack and her husband, Jimroy of Holland, and Wendee (Saige) Richardson and her husband, T.J. of Dimondale, Mich.; two sisters, Marcella Lidster and her husband, Raymond of Britton and Penny Becker of Lenoir City, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Cassie, he was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Patricia Beach and a grandson, Justice William Richardson. Funeral services for Stew will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Grace United Methodist Church in Britton with the Rev. Amy Mayo-Moyle officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeway Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Warren W. Cooley, age 97, passed away Oct. 18, 2009, at home. He was born Oct. 4, 1912, in Bald Knob, Ark. Warren was retired from Chrysler Automotive. He is survived by his wife, Hazel; his children, Anita Kracy, Gayel A. (Carol) Cooley, Larry R. Cooley, William W. Cooley and Wayne Cooley; his stepchildren, Lucille Gould, Dennis Gaston, Jeffery Gaston and Shelly Hanes; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Patricia S. Mundy. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Adrian, with Pastor Lawrence LaFollete officiating. Masonic services will be performed by the Brooklyn Masonic Lodge No. 169. Burial will follow in Tipton Cemetery.
