Barbara Ann Avery, age 78, of Mendon, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009. She was born Aug. 16, 1931, in Illinois, a daughter of E. Gordon and Mary (Morrell) Male. Barbara graduated from Mendon High School with the class of 1949, and married Lloyd Avery on Aug. 30, 1956, in Mendon. She was an Avon Products representative for many years. She had been employed as a secretary for the Huff-Riverview Agency, the Michigan Steak Company and the Mendon United Methodist Church, where she was also active in the choir. Barbara made wedding cakes for several years and enjoyed oil painting. She also made holiday yard ornaments, baby dolls, and sewed and crocheted items for area craft shows. She was the editor of the former Mendon Activator newspaper, and corresponded with dozens of pen pals throughout the United States. Barbara is survived by Lloyd, her husband of 53 years; four children and their spouses, Gordon and Debra Webb of Springport, Marvin and Joy Avery of Lebanon, Ohio, Al and Marlene Avery of Mendon, and Marjorie and Lonnie Mayo of Three Rivers; four grandchildren, Kiley Webb, Ashley Avery, Ryan Avery and Garret Avery; a brother, William (Ella) Male of Warsaw, Ind.; and four nieces, Martha, Mary, Ruth and Rebecca. Cremation has been conducted. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Saturday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Clint Zehr officiating. The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Mendon Public Library. Betty Honold Betty Honold, age 78, of New Haven passed away Sept. 21, 2009. Betty was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of New Haven. She was a caring and loving woman who loved her family. She will be dearly missed by all that knew her. She is survived by her sons, Jimmy (Kathy) Honold, David (Barbara) Honold and daughter, Jacklyn (Robert) Miller. She has nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Jack and son, Craig. Betty Lou Carrico, age 70, of Riga died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at her home. She was born Dec. 5, 1938, in Knoxville, Tenn., to Virgil and Linnie (Johnson) Maddox. She married Calvin Carrico on April 19, 1962, and he survives. Betty attended Bethany Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed needlepoint, cross stitch, tatting and antiquing. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Edd (Diane) Carrico of Saline                  and William (Alexandra) Carrico of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Tina (Darwin) Caywood of Adrian and Angela (David) Gilson of Petersburg; two brothers, Wade Maddox of Monroe and Bruce Keck of Kokomo, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Swan and Emery. Funeral services for Betty will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian with Pastor Jeremy Godwin officiating. Burial will be in Riga Cemetery. Duane Mercer, of Jerome passed away Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born March 6, 1921, in North Adams the son of Glen and Julia (Trumble) Mercer.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine (Pickford) Mercer whom he married on Dec. 24, 1943; his parents; one infant son and one brother, William Mercer. He is survived by three children, William (Katherine) Mercer of Albuquerque, N.M., Bonny (Ray “Tex”) Hawkins of Jonesville, and Nancy (Mark) Wilcox of Havelock, N.C.; nine grandchildren, William (Reneé) Mercer, Brenda Mercer, Brock (Robyn) Mercer, Kim (Rob) Moreland, Kelly (fiance Jim Smith) Elliott, Kristin (Scott) Deck, Ernestine (Jeff) Jones, Trudy Wilcox and Rebecca Wilcox; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Mercer was a lifelong resident of the Hillsdale County area and he lived in the oldest Sesqui-Centennial farm in the county of Hillsdale. He graduated from Addison High School and enjoyed working as a farmer for many years. He retired as a plumber after working for more than 30 years and he was a member of Local 333 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters. He also attended the Jerome United Methodist Church. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Duane Mercer will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in North Adams at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will take place in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in North Adams. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.   |

Christopher Michael Schweda, 27, of Greenville, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009.  He was born Aug. 14, 1982, in Sturgis. Christopher loved to volunteer, and received the national “Yes I Can” award for his work.  He also enjoyed working with Disability Awareness.  More than anything, He deeply loved the Lord. Our loving mother Consuelo has entered into Eternal peace at the age of 68. She passed peacefully and comfortably surrounded by family at University of Michigan Hospital, Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at 4:35 p.m. Born Jan. 29, 1941, in New Braunfels, Texas, Consuelo moved to Adrian with her family at a young age and remained here the rest of her life. She was married to the late Abel Cavasos for 35 years and then divorced. Together they had eight children, Geneva Cantu married to Luis Cantu, the late David J. Cavasos, Edwardo V. Cavazos married to Tina Graham Cavazos, Abel Cavasos Jr., Kristina M. Cavazos, Alberto J. Cavasos, Enrique Cavasos, and Corrinna C. Cavasos engaged to Shane J. Gintack. Preceding her in death were her mother and father, Augustina and Guadalupe Mendez Sr., and brothers Tony, Jessie, Raymond and Eliseo Mendez. She is survived by her sisters, Lucia and Paulita, and brother, Ralph Mendez. She has also left behind 12 grandchildren, Christopher M. Cantu, Delina S. Benardo, Eralynn J. Cantu, Adam L. Cantu, Ashley M. Franck, Austin A. (Cavasos) Adcock, Kyrsten A. Cavazos, Natalya C. Cavazos, Jacquline C. Cavasos, Taylor E. Cavasos, Tyler E. Cavasos, and Liliana S. Gintack; and 12 great-grandchildren, Sara Montecinos, Noah Cantu, Leticia Cantu, Ezekial Cantu, Santino Garcia, Jesus (Jay) Garcia, Miranda Benardo, Macie Pickering, Austin Pickering, Luis Cantu, Sebastian Franck, and Landon Eppink-Cantu. A Mass will be dedicated to Consuelo on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at 11:45, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Adrian. Her remains will be present. The family is having a celebration to honor her life at the Armory hall in Adrian. David John Yoder, age 52, of Grant, Mich., died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at Spectrum Health-Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids of heart/lung complications. He was born Nov. 29, 1956, in Adrian, to Carl and Nancy Yoder. David graduated from Adrian High School in 1974. David served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. David is survived by his son, David (Melinda) Yoder II of Newaygo; two daughters, Lisa Marie and Anna Marie of California; three stepsons, Darold, Tracy and James Stutzman; two grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. Donald O. Norris, 79, of LaGrange, Ind., died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at his residence. Mr. Norris moved to LaGrange County in 1961 from Eaton Rapids. He was a Supervisor at Dometic Corporation, formerly Goodyear/Duo-Therm, in LaGrange, where he worked for 34 years. Mr. Norris was a United States Korean War Veteran serving in the Army. He was a life member of the LaGrange American Legion Post #215 and the Sons of the American Legion. He was born on Aug. 15, 1930 in Eaton County to Ivan P. and Mary E. (Purcell) Norris. Mr. Norris is survived by his three daughters and a son-in-law, Denise E. and Bruce Williams of Alvin, Texas, Katherine R. Norris of Elkhart, Ind., and Kristina L. Hogan of Shipshewana, Ind.; a son, Donald E. Norris of Coldwater; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucy Greene of Eaton Rapids; and four brothers, LeRoy Norris of Brookfield, Ike Norris of Onondaga,  Ron Norris of Lansing and Duane Norris of Eaton Rapids; and a special friend, Joan Johnson of LaGrange. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Michael J. Stidham; two sisters, June and Oma; and four brothers, Daniel, David, John, and Leo. A celebration of Don’s life will be held from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 7 at the LaGrange American Legion Post #215, 100 Industrial Parkway, LaGrange. Doris VanWagner, age 47, of Onsted, passed away on Oct. 24, 2009, at home surrounded by her loving family. She fought a long, courageous battle with cancer for 12 years. Doris was born May 2, 1962, in Southfield, Mich., the daughter of Gene and Rita (Parisien) Moore.  On Sept. 2, 2000, she married Thomas VanWagner, in Hancock, Mich.  Doris was employed by Meijer, where she was a Retail Manager. She was a proud owner and operator of Quilt This in the Irish Hills. Doris loved to volunteer for anyone who was in need of help.  Besides her husband, Doris is survived by her three children, Samantha (Ron Birr) Swift of Palmyra, Mich., Mark (Erica) Muldoon of Lincoln Park, Mich., and Kelly Muldoon of Onsted, Mich.; her mother, Rita Moore, of Riverview, Mich.; brothers Henry (Lisa) Moore of Fowlerville, Mich., and Phillip Moore of Roseville, Mich.; sister in-law, Shelia Moore of Virginia; two grandsons, Keegan Swift of Palmyra, Mich., and J.D. Terry of Palmyra; two stepsons, Nick VanWagner of Escanaba, Mich., and Ben VanWagner of Florida; and her dog, Shilo, and her cat, Otis. Harry A. Herrington, 50 of Sherwood, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 as a result of a automobile accident in Branch County. A service will be held on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Colon with Pastor David Grimm officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 11 a.m. also at the church. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher-Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. Interment will follow at Matteson Lake Cemetery in Matteson Township. Harry was born April 16, 1959 in Bryan, Ohio to Lloyd and Phyllis (Moore) Herrington. He married Janice Harsila on September 11, 1980 in Montpelier, Ohio. Mr. Herrington currently worked for Lakeland Correctional Facility, where he has been a corrections officer for the past 22 years. He loved farming and five years ago, along with his family, started their own farm in Sherwood. Harry was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Colon, the SEI Union and the Reading Coon Hunters Association. He enjoyed hunting and raising coon dogs. Harry most of all enjoyed spending time with his family who considered him the best father and husband. Harry is survived by his wife Janice, his sons Zachry Herrington and Nolan Herrington, all of Sherwood, his parents Lloyd and Phyllis Herrington of Montpelier, Ohio, his sister Helen (Les) Quimby, his niece Christina Quimby, his nephew Dennis Quimby, all of Colon, and his maternal grandmother Julia Moore of Bryan, Ohio. Helen Dow Whiting, 85, of Sun Valley, Idaho, died peacefully on October 16, 2009, while in the loving care of her devoted family, in Ketchum, Idaho. Helen was born in Midland, Michigan on August 13, 1924, the oldest child of Martha (Pratt) and Willard Dow. She attended the Carpenter Street School, the Dow Private School, graduated from the Kingswood School in Birmingham, Michigan, and earned a BA degree in Chemistry from Sarah Lawrence College in 1945. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree from Northwood University in 1972. |

Helen L. Alexander, age 80, of Sturgis, passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born Sept. 16, 1929, in Columbia City, Ind., a daughter of the late Thomas and Nancy (Huff) Marker. On July 1, 1967, she married Dwight E. Alexander in LaGrange, Ind. He preceded her in death March 28, 2004. Helen had been employed as a dietitian for Sturgis Hospital, retiring in the early 1990s. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and enjoyed the Sturgis Senior Center, volunteering for the Hospital Guild, crafts and going for motorcycle and bike rides with her late husband. Surviving are four daughters, Sandra L. (Ray) Cordova of Albuquerque, N.M., Pamela M. (Adam) Messer of Knox, Ind., Alice E. Ellsworth of Glenn Fork, Ky., and Rebecca A. “Becky” Alexander of Hillsdale; an adopted son, Mike (Julie) Burkey of Three Rivers; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jeannette Rowan of Logansport, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Ruth. The family will receive friends and relatives from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. Services celebrating the life of Helen Alexander will be held immediately following the visitation at 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Henry Marvin Ramsby, 83, Cheboygan, passed to the Lord peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009. He was born in Detroit on Sept. 22, 1926 the son of Lawrence and Leanna (Gentes) Ramsby. Upon graduation from Wolverine High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army-Air Corps and served during World War II as a fighter pilot. He enjoyed flying personal aircraft the remainder of his life. Henry was the C.E.O. and owner of Ramsby Well Drilling in Cheboygan for many years and served on the State of Michigan Well Drillers Board. He was a well respected and successful businessman with a humble, good humored and charitable nature. He enjoyed the Great Lakes and forests and was an avid fisherman and camper. He also enjoyed animals and his dogs Spike and Jack were his outdoor companions. Survivors include his beloved wife and soulmate Mary Kelley Ramsby of Cheboygan; his children, Mary (Joe) Barber of Milford, Cynthia (Charles) Jett of Cheboygan, William Kelley of Cheboygan, Henry S. (Lonna) Ramsby of Traverse City, Michael (Patti) Ramsby of Cheboygan, Timothy Ramsby of Cheboygan and Kristi (Steve) Thomas of Chelsea;  several grandchildren; and great grandchildren. He will be especially missed by his “Poppa Henry” buddies, Alex and Chloe Jett and Achilles and Antasha Barber. Visitation is today from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Christian Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 at 2 p.m. also at the funeral home. James K. Arundel, 65, of Dearborn and formerly of Bronson, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, at Lakeland Health Care Center in Southfield. James was born Oct. 5, 1944, in Coldwater, a son of John and Bertha (Nowak) Arundel. Mr. Arundel  graduated from Bronson High School in 1962 and attended both Lansing Community College and the former Tri-State University in Indiana. He worked for Douglas Manufacturing until 1965, leaving the Bronson area, and then for Diamond REO in Lansing until 1969.  Jim relocated to Dearborn and spent many years with AM General in Livonia, until ill health forced him into early retirement in 1992.  Mr. Arundel  loved theater and acting, belonging to the Community Circle Players, performing at the Lansing Civic Center and also directing.  He traveled internationally to enjoy many theater productions. He also enjoyed bowling, casinos and flea markets.   Surviving are a sister, Janette and Jim Parker of Laotto, Ind.; a brother John and Ellen Arundel of Portage; nieces and nephews John (Tracy) Arundel of DeWitt, Deborah Harris of Portage, Caryn Arundel of Miami, Rob (Lyndsay) Elhenicky of East Lansing, Margaret Arundel of Portage, Todd (Cheryl) Hansman of Bronson and Angela Rinehart of Colon; stepnieces and stepnephews James (Cheryl) Parker and Lance (Cheryl) Parker, both of Laotto, and Victoria (Robbie) Bjorg of North Carolina. He was preceded in death by a brother, James E. Jerry Russell, 65, of Jonesville, passed away Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren.  He was born March 2, 1944, in Jackson, the son of Claude and Barbara (Brawner) Russell, and raised by his grandparents Ima and Blaine Storer. He graduated from Jonesville High School.  Jerry was Supt. of Public Works for the village of Jonesville for 39 years.  He loved working with the residents of Jonesville and took pride in his job of making the village a nice looking community.  He was a former Jonesville fireman for 20 years.  Jerry was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors, along with his love of his 1969 Mustang. Survivors include his wife, Monica (Crouse) Russell; four daughters: Jamie (John) Bonham, Tracy (John) Gearhart, Amy (David) Henkel, and Stephanie Russell; grandchildren:  Danielle, Ashley, Tyler, Torrey, Dustin, Clay, Jordan, RJ, Justice, Gavin and Devin; step-grand children: Megan and Taylor; great-grand children:  Raylee, Lita, Hadrian and Ginger. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. June Marie Starks, age 68, of rural Mendon, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at the Three Rivers Health emergency room.  She was born April 19, 1941, in Three Rivers, a daughter of Guy and Melba (Irving) Kline, and was a member of the Mendon High School class of 1959.  She married Oscar Stark on Nov. 19, 1960, in Three Rivers and they have lived in the Mendon-Colon area since their marriage.  June had worked for the Midway Cafe in Mendon, Trans-O-Gram Toys in Sturgis, and Abbott Magic Company in Colon.  For many years she was the head cook at Fairview Living Centre in Centreville.  June enjoyed gardening, canning and cooking for her family. Katherine Anita Rosinski Katherine Anita Rosinski, age 89, of Cedar, formerly of Eastpointe passed away peacefully Sunday October 25, 2009, at home with her loving family by her side. Anita was born October 5, 1920, in Wyoming, Ontario to the late Ambrose and Anna Mason. She married the late Edward Rosinski on September 30, 1950, in Detroit, Mich. Together they lovingly raised six children. Anita was a longtime member of St. Veronica's Catholic Church, Eastpointe, Mich. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed. Leona Safran, 90, of Reading, passed away Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009 at her home. She was born May 15, 1919 in Detroit to Stanley V. and Mary B. (Guzdziol) Czarniak. She was married Nov. 26, 1947 to Casimir James Safran and he preceded her in death Feb. 4, 1973. Leona formerly was a seamstress at Julie’s, a clothing shop in the Fisher Building in Detroit. She was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Surviving are a daughter, Marie (Mark) Williams of Reading; a son, David (Robin) Safran of Reading; six grandchildren, Kristopher Williams of Shelby Township, Jonathan Williams of Lake Okoboji, Iowa, Mariah Collins of Reading, Joshua Williams of Madison, Wis., Sarah Williams of Reading, Krista (Ken) Coventry of Goodrich and Tanner Morgan; and three great-grandchildren, Layne, Christian and Alora Collins of Reading. Besides her husband, Casimir, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Harry Czarniak; and a grandson, James Valentine. A Mass of Christian burial for Leona Safran will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Ioane Sigarara as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery. Leslie “Les” Freeman Moose, of Osseo, passed away Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Hillsdale County. He was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Napoleon, Ohio, to Freeman and Lavina Moose. Les graduated from DeVilbis High School in Toledo, Ohio with the class of 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark and brother, Burt. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Dorothy (Lauman) Moose; three daughters, Kelly Plonka, Marie Cox and Linda Morris; one stepdaughter, Lin (Ray) Lyons; two stepsons, Gary (Nancy) Lauman and Larry (Christine) Lauman; three sisters, Beverly (Jim) Brown, Karen (Bob) Cordrey, Evon (Kenny) Rufenacht; one sister-in-law, Sue Moose; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; grandson, Jared Rose; and nieces and nephews. Les retired after managing a private estate in Perrysburg for 38 years. He served 10 years on the Sylvania Township Fire Department # 2. He was a Boy Scout leader for 18 years. After retiring he served five years on the Pittsford and Jefferson Township Fire Boards in Michigan. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Pittsford and a member of the Pittsford Lions Club for many years. His greatest joy was going to Beaumont, Texas to fish for the “Big Ones” with his son-in-law, Ray Lyons and grandsons, Justin and Damian Deaz. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Leslie “Les” Freeman Moose will be held at the First Congregational Church of Pittsford (4340 S. Lester Leroy Leister, age 67, of Centreville, passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 4, 1942, in Three Rivers, a son of the late Lester E. and Vivian B. (Caseman) Leister. Lester had resided in the Constantine and Centreville area most of his life. He retired from Viking RV in Centreville and was an avid hunter and life member of the North American Hunting Club. He enjoyed working in his garden, hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are two daughters, Holly (Shawn) Strawser of White Pigeon and Melynda (Douglas) Prusaczyk of Illinois; four grandchildren, Lincoln, Hayley and Ty Strawser and Makenzy Prusaczyk; four sisters, Sonia (Clark) Huckendubler of Mendon, Katie (Larry) Hill of Goshen, Ind., Tena (Rex) Bender of Alabama and Sally Leister of Sturgis; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Charles Willis; a son, Lester “Buddy” Leister; a sister, Dola Weldon; and a brother, Donald Leister. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place.  The family will receive friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Lucille I. Longstreet, age 93, of Adrian died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Provincial House. She was born June 13, 1916, in Grayling, Mich., to Carl and Myrtle (VanAmburg) Larson. On June 28, 1941, she married Earl Lee Longstreet and he preceded her in death in August of 1988. Lucille retired from Bixby Hospital, where she had worked in the Data Processing department. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Adrian. Lucille is survived by one daughter, Linda L. Pawling of Palatine, Ill.; one sister, Erdine Corwin of Louden, Tenn.; and one grandson, Brett Robert Pawling. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Ernie Larson, and four sisters, Beulah Stephan, Margaret Krome, Estelle Connin and Aileen Belmont. Lyman E. Miller, age 65 years, of Hudson passed away suddenly Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, while at the Hide Away Orchards near Adrian. He was born May 29, 1944, in Hudson, the son of Carson Henning and Helen Miller. He was a graduate of Hudson High School, Class of 1962, and spent all his life in the Hudson area. He married Jean E. Green on Nov. 24, 1973, in Hudson. She survives.  Lyman retired from the Rima Mfg. Co. in Hudson in May of 2006, was a member of the Vandercook Lake Bible Methodist Church where he was a member of the Church Board, was an avid gardener, was a volunteer driver for the Department on Aging and loved his family and his dog, Skipper. Surviving besides his wife, Jean, are their children, Elizabeth Miller and her fiancé, Dave Byers, of Somerset Lake, Scott Miller of Hudson and Katrina Miller at home, and a grandson, Cameron Scott Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, in the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson, with the Rev. Christopher Hilling officiating. Pauline M. Mast, age 98, formerly of Colon, passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. Pauline was born May 18, 1911, in Goshen, Ind., a daughter of the late Charles C. and Mayte (Farmwald) Amsler. Pauline grew up in Goshen and graduated from Goshen High School. On May 18, 1934, she married Harris W. Mast in Goshen, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1975. In 1952, Pauline moved to Colon, where she and her husband operated Lakeview Cleaners for 23 years. She also had worked as a service clerk for Montgomery Ward in Sturgis and before that in Elkhart.  She had also been Colon village treasurer from 1974-1986. She was a member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church and had attended the Colon United Methodist Church. Pauline was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #91 of Colon and an honorary member of the Grand Chapter of the Michigan Eastern Star. She is survived by her grandchildren, Russell (Marcy) Spearow of Jenison, Phillip Spearow  of Lake Okeechobee, Fla., Greg (Corine) Smoker of Union Springs, Ala., Jeff Smoker of Tennessee, Paula  Heaton of Elkhart, Craig (Barb) Mast of Galien, Lisa (Mark) Chandler of Paducah, Ky.; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita E. Spearow, in August 2005, son; Phillip H. Mast in May of 1997; a grandson, Robert W. Spearow, in November 1981; a brother, Calvin Amsler; and a sister, Fay Walters. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Schipper Funeral Home in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Pauline M. Mast will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Robert E. Downer, 72, beloved husband, father and grandfather, of Quincy, Mich., passed away Oct. 16, 2009, in Bradenton, Fla, at his winter home.  Robert was born Sept. 23, 1937, to Wallace and Gladys (Marquart) Downer in Hillsdale.  Both parents preceded him in death.  He graduated from Quincy High School in 1955 and married Jennie Lee Gerber on May 19, 1956.  He also attended the Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music from 1959-1962.  After graduation, he became director of Camp Selah Christian Camp, Reading, for 15 years with his wife, Jennie.  He was an active member of East Algansee Baptist Church and currently Calvary Baptist Church, Quincy.  During the winter months, he attended Fellowship Baptist in Bradenton.  He worked the majority of his life as co-owner with his father at W.E. Downer and Son Well Drilling and loved his work and all the people he met during those years. Bob and Jennie loved to travel in the U.S. and to many other countries.  They also loved fishing off their boat in Florida during the winter months. Survivors include his wife, Jennie Lee (Gerber) Downer; one son, Mark Downer, Mooresville, N.C.; one daughter, Karen (Downer) Parman, of Fayetteville, Ga.  Also surviving are two sisters, Nancy (Downer) Strang of Quincy  and Carol (Downer) Turner of Edwardsburg; five grandchildren, Kortney Parman of Atlanta, Ga., Brock Parman of Nashville, Tenn., and Mickel, Taylor and Daylee Parman of Fayetteville, Ga. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Quincy Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Frank Snyder officiating. Ronald K. Morey, 65, of Klinger Lake, Sturgis, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born May 20, 1944, in Detroit, a son of Arlys and Olive (Beach) Morey. He had lived at Klinger Lake since 1983, and had lived in the White Pigeon, Bronson and Burr Oak areas. He was a 1963 graduate of Bronson High School. On Feb. 22, 1964, he married Patricia D. Persails in Union City. He retired in 2000 from Viking Industries in Centreville after more than 20 years of employment. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, hunting, woodworking, sports, grilling food and gardening. Surviving are his wife, Patrica D. Morey of Sturgis; two daughters, Tammy I. (Todd) Sanderson of Mendon and Paul Jo (Kevin) Butler of Three Rivers; a son, Tim R. (Deb) Morey of Constantine; six grandchildren; five brothers, Robert D. Morey of Jenison, George C. Morey of Kalkaska, Leslie J. Morey of Nappanee, Ind., Frederick E. Morey of Shipshewana, Ind., and Jerry L. Morey of Sturgis; two sisters, Shirley Armstrong of Sturgis and Ritabell (Roger) Wilks of Kentwood; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn and Esther Morey; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Penny Sue Morey; three brothers, Melvin, Danny and Mervin; a sister, Edith Morey; and a nephew. Rose M. Rowe, 74, of Hillsdale, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at her home. She was born Sept. 25, 1935 in Defiance, Ohio, to John and Dorothy (Degler) Zinser. She was married March 11, 1972 to John Rowe, he preceded her in death in 2003. Rose was affiliated with Riggs Beauty Studio for over forty years. She was a graduate of Ayersville High School in Ohio and Riggs Beauty School. She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Star Group at St. Paul’s and the St. Paul’s Guild. She was a member of the Wednesday morning quilting group at the College Baptist Church. Rose enjoyed spending time with her family and she was an avid gardener. Thomas J. Morgan, 62, of Camden, died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at Toledo Hospital, Toledo, Ohio. He was born March 20, 1947, in Edon, Ohio, to Estel L. and Betty L. (Thorp) Morgan. He attended Camden-Frontier schools. He married Rita A. Altaffer in Montpelier, Ohio, Dec. 6, 1986, and she survives. Thomas retired from Aro Corp in Bryan, Ohio in 2006 after 40 years of employment in the carpenter and maintenance departments. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family. Also surviving are four daughters, Tami (Rob) Paulsen, Southgate, Traci Szegedi, Northwood, Ohio, Christina Morgan and Amanda (Dalton) Brown, both of Camden; five sons, Larry Jones Jr., Montpelier, Tommy Jones, Marion, Ohio, John Morgan (fiancé Nikki Collins), Orland, Ind., James Morgan, Montpelier and Robert (Stacy) Morgan, Osseo; four sisters, Pat (Dan) Pearson, Linda (Ed) Terris, Sandra (Dave) Grunden, and Laurie (Roger) Montgomery, all of Camden; one brother, Bill Morgan, Mio, Mich.; 24 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Virginia Ann North was killed on Oct. 22, 2009, when a vehicle on M-14 crossed a median that lacked a guardrail and crashed into her car. Virginia was born on June 24, 1951, and grew up in Blissfield, Mich. She earned a B.S. in interior design at Michigan State University and a doctorate of architecture at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. As a practicing architect, she specialized in lighting, working at Rosetti Associates and Newton Company, and held various teaching and administrative positions at Eastern Michigan University where she was a Department Head, Professor and Program Coordinator, and then at Lawrence Technological University, as Professor, Department Head and Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies in the College of Architecture and Design. She published in the field of architecture and presented papers at professional conferences in the United States, Canada and England. Heavily involved in community and professional service, Virginia was Chairperson for the State Student Competition of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), President of the State Board of Directors of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), Library Chair for the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), Chair of the Midwest Section for the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) and Board Member and Newsletter Editor for the Architectural Research Center Consortium (ARCC). Virginia was an accomplished tennis player and for decades directed tennis tournaments, in particular the Ann Arbor Junior Open. A competitive ice skater, she had been a member of two synchronized skating teams, the Debonaires and the Gems, and also practiced martial arts. She enjoyed spending time with her family at The Homestead in Glen Arbor on Lake Michigan, bicycled throughout rural areas of Michigan and northern Ohio, and was an avid reader. Virginia Ann North was predeceased by her parents, Vern DeGroff and Lucile Kerbawy, and is survived by husband Clare; daughter Ashley; brother and sister-in-law Frank and Susan DeGroff, niece Sierra DeGroff, nephew and niece Jarrod and Stephanie DeGroff, sister- and brother- in-law Marcia North and John Hoffstaed; and niece and nephew Channa North-Hoffstaed and Russell Shearer; and sister-in-law Georgiann North. A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church in Ann Arbor on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. |

W. Stewart “Stew” Niblack, Jr. age 79, of Hillsdale, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at his home. Stew was formerly of Britton and spent his winters in Haines City, Fla. He was born Aug. 2, 1930, in Hillsdale to William S. and Marjorie A. (Miner) Niblack, Sr. He graduated from Britton High School. Stew attended Hillsdale College, Wayne State School of Mortuary Science and graduated from Eastern Michigan University. On June 22, 1968, he married Cassie D. Williams. She preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 2000. Stew served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 – 1954, during the Korean War. Stew has worked for funeral homes in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek until becoming the owner and operator of the Niblack Home for Funerals in Britton form 1963 – 1975. He then worked for United Bank and Trust as Branch Office Manager in Britton until his retirement in 1992. Stew had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Britton, the Tecumseh Masons Lodge 69 and the Glen H. Daykin American Legion Post 155 in Britton. He loved to fish. Stew is survived by three sons, W. Scott Niblack and his wife, Kim of Fowlerville, Mich., W. Shawn Niblack and his wife, Carol of St. Charles, Mo. and William S. Niblack III and his wife, Natalie of Tecumseh; two daughters, Denise McCormack and her husband, Jimroy of Holland, and Wendee (Saige) Richardson and her husband, T.J. of Dimondale, Mich.; two sisters, Marcella Lidster and her husband, Raymond of Britton and Penny Becker of Lenoir City, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Cassie, he was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Patricia Beach and a grandson, Justice William Richardson. He was first married in 1945 to Clara Long and she preceded him in death in 1991. He was married Oct. 17, 1999, to Eva Mae Westfall Lockwood; she preceded him in death July 20, 2009. Robert was retired from Wells Equipment and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Germany. Robert is survived by two step children, Judy Ann (Charles) Alspaugh of Reading and William Earl (Sharon) Lockwood of Nashua, N. H.; a sister, Chloey Foust of Litchfield; five step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Eva Mae, he was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Clara; three sisters, Elsie, Zelma and Mildred and three brothers, Kincle, Arthur Kelly and Harold Irving.
