Norman L. Jones

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 12:27 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Norman L. Jones, age 66, of Marshall, died at his home on Monday, Oct. 5, 2009. Norm was born Jan. 17, 1943 in South Bend, Ind. to Loyal B. and Martha O. (Walker) Jones. He grew up in Union City and graduated from Union City High School in 1961. He served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War and was a helicopter crew chief and door gunner. While a young man watching the races at Butler Speedway, he was introduced to Alberta S. Bridegroom. A year later, the couple was married on May 28, 1966 at the Union City United Methodist Church. The honeymoon departure was understandably delayed until after the races at Butler were concluded that weekend! He was a Heavy Equipment Operator for Michigan Department of Transportation in their Marshall garage.  He was very active in the Michigan State Employees Association, serving in offices from Chief Spokesperson to Vice-President. Norm retired in 1997 after 28 years of service. He also served as the Liquor Inspector for Fredonia Township.  Norm was a member of Union City United Methodist Church where he was very active earlier in life. He bowled in Marshall leagues with his wife. He liked to cut wood. Norm used to hunt near Baldwin, with the intention of relaxing not killing a deer! Norm had a lifelong passion for circle track racing with modified and super-modified cars. He owned a car with Tom Hubbard that he raced once and served as mechanic with. He was dubbed “Parnelli Jones” by friends! When he couldn’t race anymore due to his health he helped his son and others with their cars.  Surviving are his wife Alberta; son Albert (Karen) Jones of Marshall and daughter Martha Jones of Fenton; and two brothers Ferris Jones and Dennis Jones both of Union  City.  Friends may call at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home and Cremation Services on Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., where family will be present to gather with friends and share memories. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in Kempf’s Reception Hall at the funeral home.  Memorials may be directed to Covenant House of Michigan or Union City United Methodist Church. Assistance with memorials available at Kempf’s. To sign the on line guest register and leave a personal message for the family visit www.kempffuneralhome.com.

Raymond Meckley

Sunday, October 4, 2009 3:52 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Raymond E. Meckley, 82, of Fort Myers, Fla., passed peacefully with his wife, Louise at his side on Monday Sept. 14, 2009. He was born Feb. 24, 1927, and was the first-born child of Clifford E. and Ann Meckley of Colfax, Iowa. Ray proudly served his country during World War II as a gunner on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Raymond married Andrew and Florence Leutheuser’s youngest child, Louise in their hometown of Somerset, Mich. on Oct. 12, 1956. His love of farming combined with a business degree from Simpson College made it a natural fit for him to start Flavor Fruit Farm in Somerset Center. Over the years Raymond developed a flourishing apple business for the local community. From the Fall Apple Smorgasbords to his pictorial fruit displays at the Michigan State Fair, Ray earned winning ribbons and many compliments. After the December 1976 fire at Flavor Fruit Farm, Raymond rebuilt the business with the help of his wife Louise and their children. Coming to the orchard on the weekend meant hayrides, apples, roasted almonds, doughnuts and cider, along with apple butter, and hotdogs at the fire pit. You could always remember the thrill of being able to pick your own apple or cherries from a tree in the orchard. Raymond loved seeing all the people that came by to say Hi and share a moment with him. No matter what was discussed Raymond could joke and find a way to make his point like an arrow hitting the bulls-eye. As the seasons changed Raymond found new interests in life upon retiring from the daily business of running the orchard. He enjoyed fishing and watching boats pass by on the river outside his home in Fort Myers, Florida. He is survived by his loving wife Louise, children, Edward Meckley of Somerset; Phillip (Robin) Meckley of Fullerton, Calif.; Beth (Kevin) Wiesman of Somerset Center; John Meckley of Santa Barbara, Calif.; Steven (Kim) Meckley of Lake LeAnn; and Sarah (Brent) Brewster of N. Ft. Myers, Fla. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Margaret Owens of Fairbank, Iowa; Robert Meckley of Egan, Minn.; Joan Stiffler of Montezuma, Iowa; Gene Meckley of Colfax, Iowa and Susan Grove of Okeechobee, Fla. Raymond is also survived by his 17 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service in celebration of Raymond’s life and marriage of 53 years will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12 at the Flavor Fruit Farm, Somerset Center, with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers FL 33908.
