Al Bronstetter

Al Bronstetter, age 61,  of Sturgis, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Oct. 30, 2009, at his home, surrounded by his family following a battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was born June 10, 1948, in Burr Oak, a son of the late Robert and Florence (Fifer) Bronstetter. Al had resided nearly his entire life in the Sturgis and Burr Oak area. He graduated from Burr Oak High School with the class of 1966 and continued his education at Glen Oaks Community College and later attended several banking schools. On Aug. 2, 1969, he married Ellen Waterhouse in Oneonta, N.Y. Al was a local banker for 27 years. He retired in January 2008 from Abbott Laboratories in Sturgis following 12 years of employment. He was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church and a past member of the Sturgis Lions Club. Al was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Cadmus. He enjoyed traveling, working on his computer, reading and his Corvette. Al had many interests, but what he cherished most was time spent with his family, especially his four grandchildren. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 40 years, Ellen; a daughter, Jennifer (Joe) Schwartz of Sturgis; a son, Michael (Kristi) Bronstetter of Sturgis; four grandchildren, Hannah and Emma Bronstetter and Meghan and Adam Schwartz; a sister, Dorothy (James) Lafferty of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Janice Ross. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Al Bronstetter will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Sturgis. The Revs. Deb Johnson and Robert Keim will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn cemetery in Sturgis, where a veteran’s flag presentation will be conferred by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial donation be directed to the First United Methodist Church, 200 Pleasant Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091 or the ALS West Michigan Chapter, 731 Front St. NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504. Armilla Jane Crothers Armilla Jane Crothers, age 92, a resident of Sterling Heights, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. She was born May 16, 1917, in Dodge, Nebraska. Mrs. Crothers was employed at Packard Company in war planes production. She was employed at Prieh's Department Store in Mount Clemens in the hosiery department and later as a sales associate for Schwark Furniture in Shelby Township. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Clinton Township, where she was active with the Ladies Aid and the Golden Years Senior Citizen Group. She volunteered with the American Red Cross. Her interests included flower gardening, hooking rugs, sewing, needlework, making afghans and home decorating. Her survivors include three children, Janet (Jerry) Ott Reimann of St. Joseph, Jeri L. Crothers of Sterling Heights, JoAnne (Arthur) Iverson of Macomb; four grandchildren, Julie, Jill, Jeffrey and John; five great-grandchildren, Patrick, Katy, Sophia, Cole and Sarah. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Chudomelka Bures; her husbands, Erwin W. Ott and Alvin J. Crothers; three sisters, Adella Mandel, Elma Ratzow, Wilma Crance; and her dear companion, Russell Harder. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. (instate at 10:30 a.m.) in Trinity Lutheran Church, 38900 Harper, Clinton Township with the Rev. Thees Hoft officiating. Burial will be in Cadillac Memorial Gardens Cemetery East, Clinton Township. Visitation will be held in the Harold W. On Sept. 29, 1979, she married Jesse Florez and he survives. Ava attended the Crossroads Community Church. She was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to spend time with her family, friends and her dogs. She also loved to cook. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Kelli (Roscoe) Stetten of Adrian; her stepson, Jeremy Cooper of Brooklyn; two brothers, Steven (Lynn) Adams and William (Joanna) Adams all of Monroe; two grandchildren, Nichole (Brian) Fisher and Cody Stetten; three additional grandchildren and two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services for Ava will be held on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at 3 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian with Pastor Pete Valdez officiating. Duane Mercer, of Jerome passed away Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born March 6, 1921, in North Adams the son of Glen and Julia (Trumble) Mercer.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine (Pickford) Mercer whom he married on Dec. 24, 1943; his parents; one infant son and one brother, William Mercer. He is survived by three children, William (Katherine) Mercer of Albuquerque, N.M., Bonny (Ray “Tex”) Hawkins of Jonesville, and Nancy (Mark) Wilcox of Havelock, N.C.; nine grandchildren, William (Reneé) Mercer, Brenda Mercer, Brock (Robyn) Mercer, Kim (Rob) Moreland, Kelly (fiance Jim Smith) Elliott, Kristin (Scott) Deck, Ernestine (Jeff) Jones, Trudy Wilcox and Rebecca Wilcox; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Mercer was a lifelong resident of the Hillsdale County area and he lived in the oldest Sesqui-Centennial farm in the county of Hillsdale. He graduated from Addison High School and enjoyed working as a farmer for many years. He retired as a plumber after working for more than 30 years and he was a member of Local 333 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters. He also attended the Jerome United Methodist Church. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Duane Mercer will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in North Adams at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will take place in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in North Adams. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Cecilia was born in Detroit on September 1, 1926, daughter of the late Peter and Julia (Kowalski) Polcyn. She was united in marriage to her beloved Manuel "Homer" Domingues on October 11, 1948 in Detroit. The couple made their home in Detroit and was blessed with two beautiful boys. After Homer's retirement, Homer and his son built a home for the couple in Whittmore, Michigan where they resided for over 10 years. Cecilia dedicated her life to her family. She had a wonderful personality and was full of life. Cecilia loved traveling with her husband. A loving and caring woman, Cecilia will be deeply missed. Cecilia is survived by her loving sons, Martin (Sally) and Larry (Judy); cherished grandchildren, Adam and Kimmy; and dearest sister, Mary. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Homer on August 28, 2005. She lived in Indianapolis the last 10 years. Fern enjoyed the outdoors and working in her flower garden, sharing her plants with friends and neighbors. She loved traveling and talking about her grandson, whom she adored, and she loved her kitty, Tiger. Fern is survived by her loving daughter, Karan (Jim) Slack; grandson, Michael (Tricia Gabriel) Slack; and niece, Carol (Charles) Nicholson. Her husband of 51 years, Kenneth Cogley, and a brother, Earl Ries, preceded her in death. George Anthony Pavka, 78 of Kendallville, Ind. and formerly of Montgomery, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 in Kendallville, Ind. He was born Dec. 2, 1930 in California Twp., Branch County, to Anthony and Mary Elizabeth (Belik) Pavka. They are deceased. He married Lola B. (Back) on March 31, 1953 at Castle Rock, Colo. She survives. George was retired from the Coldwater Regional Center, and also was a retired career Army veteran, retiring from the Army in 1968 as a staff sergeant. He was a graduate of Montgomery High School,  served 21 years in the US Army, serving in the Korean War, and received the Good Conduct Bronze Clasp, and the Purple Heart Award. He enjoyed playing cards, watching football and was a Colts Fan, enjoyed woodworking, working in his yard, gardening and watching television. He formerly lived at California Township, Branch County, and also lived at Avon Park, Fla., and had lived in Noble County, Ind. the last seven years. Survivors include his wife Lola B. Pavka of Kendallville, Ind., daughter Mary and Neal Augenstein of Kendallville, Ind., sons Troy and Mary Pavka of Camden, William and Linda Pavka of Coldwater, Dennis Pavka of Churubusco, Ind. and David Pavka of  Hillsdale, sisters Josephine Williams of Montgomery and Mildred Gripman of Montgomery, brothers Joseph and Betty Pavka of Reading and William and Laura Pavka in Hillsdale, eighth grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Anna Swaney and Mary Harbaugh, brother John Pavka and grandsons William Joseph Pavka and Roger Anthony. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Ind. with prayer services at 5 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Ind. with Father James Stoyle. Burial will follow at California Cemetery, California Twp., Branch County. Military committal services will be conducted by members of Montgomery American Legion Post. Henry Marvin Ramsby, 83, Cheboygan, passed to the Lord peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009. He was born in Detroit on Sept. 22, 1926 the son of Lawrence and Leanna (Gentes) Ramsby. Upon graduation from Wolverine High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army-Air Corps and served during World War II as a fighter pilot. He enjoyed flying personal aircraft the remainder of his life. Henry was the C.E.O. and owner of Ramsby Well Drilling in Cheboygan for many years and served on the State of Michigan Well Drillers Board. He was a well respected and successful businessman with a humble, good humored and charitable nature. He enjoyed the Great Lakes and forests and was an avid fisherman and camper. He also enjoyed animals and his dogs Spike and Jack were his outdoor companions. Survivors include his beloved wife and soulmate Mary Kelley Ramsby of Cheboygan; his children, Mary (Joe) Barber of Milford, Cynthia (Charles) Jett of Cheboygan, William Kelley of Cheboygan, Henry S. (Lonna) Ramsby of Traverse City, Michael (Patti) Ramsby of Cheboygan, Timothy Ramsby of Cheboygan and Kristi (Steve) Thomas of Chelsea;  several grandchildren; and great grandchildren. He will be especially missed by his “Poppa Henry” buddies, Alex and Chloe Jett and Achilles and Antasha Barber. Visitation is today from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Christian Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009 at 2 p.m. also at the funeral home. Military honors will follow the funeral service at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions in Henry’s name may be directed to the Cheboygan County Humane Society, Hospice of Little Traverse Bay or the charity of one’s choice.

Iva M. Merrifield, 88, of LaGrange, Ind., died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at her residence. In 1938, Mrs. Merrifield moved from Minot, N.D., to LaGrange, and was a homemaker and a seamstress.  She was a member at the LaGrange Missionary Church in LaGrange where she was very active.  She was also a member of the Plato Home Economics Club,  Sharing Doll Club, and Mentor Moms and had been a Child Evangelism teacher. Mrs. Merrifield was born on Feb. 12, 1921, in Kenmare, N.D., to William R. and Elma (Harris) Kauffman.  On May 31, 1942, in Howe, Ind.,  she married Howard E. Merrifield. He preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 1982. Surviving are six daughters and three sons-in-law, Sally and Jerry Weir and Peggy Ryan, all of LaGrange, Phyllis Thompson of Iron Station, N.C., Amy and Ed Layman of Burr Oak, Becky and David Mains, Jr. of Albion, Ind., and Bonnie Hurtekant of Elkhart, Ind.; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Paul and Paula Merrifield of Fairbanks, Ark., Neil Merrifield of Denver, N.C., Keith and Jamie Merrifield of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Randy and Pat Merrifield of LaGrange; 33 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Franz of Mount Pleasant; and one brother, Frank Kauffman of Goshen, Ind. Also preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Billy Merrifield; five sons-in-law; four grandchildren; two sisters; and four brothers. J. Harry Eberhard, age 63, of Colon, passed away, Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at his home. Harry was born July 4, 1946, in Sturgis, a son of David and Martha (Troyer) Eberhard. Harry had served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He had lived most all of his life in St. Joseph County. Harry had worked for 28 years at the Twin County Probation Center in Three Rivers, where he retired in 2006 as executive director. His great passion in life was his family and motorcycling. He is survived by seven children, Michell (Josh) Hubbard of Traverse City, Mike (Kim) Woods of Commerce Township, Cherish (Vern) Buel of Houston, Jamie (Ray) Schmucker of Syracuse, Ind., Marina (Tim) Borkholder and daughter Abigail of Colon, Stephen Woods of Traverse City and Salina (Barry) Kapik of Atlanta; 30 grand and great-grandchildren; mother Martha Horowitz of Florida, three brothers, Ernie Eberhard of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Wayne and Leland Eberhard both of Holt; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, David Eberhard; a sister, Edna (Dolly) Rohrer; and an aunt Susie Wickey. The family will receive relatives and friends after noon Sunday at the Double M Building, 59321 Nottawa Road, Centreville, one mile north of Nottawa. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Double M Building with Pastor Thomas Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Order Amish Cemetery in rural Centreville. James K. Arundel, 65, of Dearborn and formerly of Bronson, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, at Lakeland Health Care Center in Southfield. James was born Oct. 5, 1944, in Coldwater, a son of John and Bertha (Nowak) Arundel. Mr. Arundel  graduated from Bronson High School in 1962 and attended both Lansing Community College and the former Tri-State University in Indiana. He worked for Douglas Manufacturing until 1965, leaving the Bronson area, and then for Diamond REO in Lansing until 1969.  Jim relocated to Dearborn and spent many years with AM General in Livonia, until ill health forced him into early retirement in 1992.  Mr. Arundel  loved theater and acting, belonging to the Community Circle Players, performing at the Lansing Civic Center and also directing.  He traveled internationally to enjoy many theater productions. He also enjoyed bowling, casinos and flea markets.   Surviving are a sister, Janette and Jim Parker of Laotto, Ind.; a brother John and Ellen Arundel of Portage; nieces and nephews John (Tracy) Arundel of DeWitt, Deborah Harris of Portage, Caryn Arundel of Miami, Rob (Lyndsay) Elhenicky of East Lansing, Margaret Arundel of Portage, Todd (Cheryl) Hansman of Bronson and Angela Rinehart of Colon; stepnieces and stepnephews James (Cheryl) Parker and Lance (Cheryl) Parker, both of Laotto, and Victoria (Robbie) Bjorg of North Carolina. He was preceded in death by a brother, James E. Nowak; and brother-in-law Bill Hansman.  A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Oct. 17 at St. Mary of Assumption Church in Bronson, with the Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Jerry Russell, 65, of Jonesville, passed away Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at home surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren.  He was born March 2, 1944, in Jackson, the son of Claude and Barbara (Brawner) Russell, and raised by his grandparents Ima and Blaine Storer. He graduated from Jonesville High School.  Jerry was Supt. of Public Works for the village of Jonesville for 39 years.  He loved working with the residents of Jonesville and took pride in his job of making the village a nice looking community.  He was a former Jonesville fireman for 20 years.  Jerry was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors, along with his love of his 1969 Mustang. Survivors include his wife, Monica (Crouse) Russell; four daughters: Jamie (John) Bonham, Tracy (John) Gearhart, Amy (David) Henkel, and Stephanie Russell; grandchildren:  Danielle, Ashley, Tyler, Torrey, Dustin, Clay, Jordan, RJ, Justice, Gavin and Devin; step-grand children: Megan and Taylor; great-grand children:  Raylee, Lita, Hadrian and Ginger. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. June Marie Starks, age 68, of rural Mendon, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at the Three Rivers Health emergency room.  She was born April 19, 1941, in Three Rivers, a daughter of Guy and Melba (Irving) Kline, and was a member of the Mendon High School class of 1959.  She married Oscar Stark on Nov. 19, 1960, in Three Rivers and they have lived in the Mendon-Colon area since their marriage.  June had worked for the Midway Cafe in Mendon, Trans-O-Gram Toys in Sturgis, and Abbott Magic Company in Colon.  For many years she was the head cook at Fairview Living Centre in Centreville.  June enjoyed gardening, canning and cooking for her family. She liked country music, mushrooming, bingo and casino trips.  June is survived by her husband, Oscar; two children, Bob Starks of Howe, Ind., and Tuesday Starks of Mendon; four grandchildren, Jesse Starks, Trevor Ice, Derek Ice and Faith Marie Starks; two sisters, Sylvia Everett of Dayton, Tenn., and Sharon Lafler of Centreville; a brother, Wendell Kline of Leonidas; two sisters-in-law, Alice Kline of White Pigeon and Carol Kline of Bronson; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and by three brothers, Dale, Andrew and James Kline.  The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon.  Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kenneth Merillat, age 84, of Adrian went to be with the Lord, Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009.  Ken was born June 23, 1925, in Tedrow, Ohio, the 14th of 15 children of David and Emma (McCollum) Merillat. In 1948 he married Nina Slee in Waukegan, Ill. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from April 24, 1944, to April 26, 1946, and was discharged as a DAV. Ken was a farmer, private pilot, owned and operated Ken-tel Telephone Equipment of Lenawee, KNK Payphones (with his grandson, Chip) and retired from General Telephone with over 26 years of service. Most importantly, Ken was a Christian and his deepest desire was to see people come to Christ. He worked faithfully with many different ministries to reach that goal but his greatest joy was working for Bill Glass Prison Ministries. Ken loved his family and he enjoyed watching his grandkids grow. He hardly ever missed a wrestling meet or sporting event when his grandchildren were participating, even if it meant traveling many miles. He was a very important part of each and every grandchild’s life. Ken is survived by his wife, Nina, of over 61 years; daughter, Kathy Connin and her husband Aram Choolijian, of Ypsilanti; two grandsons, Chip and his wife, Cassie, and their two sons, Chase and Carter, and Kip and his wife, Jana, and their two sons, Kaden and Keegan; granddaughter Karisha and her husband, Tony McCarthy, children Kristos and Kolya and their dad, Phil Brown); and his sister-in-law, Ruth Merillat. He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth, and daughter-in-law, Alice (Hood) Merillat, and their two children, Kayleen and Kendra; daughter, Karen Jean; five brothers and nine sisters. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Adrian, with the Rev. Lloyd Jewett and Bill Glass officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors performed by the U.S. Navy Reserve Honor Guard, Perrysburg, Ohio. Surviving are a daughter, Marie (Mark) Williams of Reading; a son, David (Robin) Safran of Reading; six grandchildren, Kristopher Williams of Shelby Township, Jonathan Williams of Lake Okoboji, Iowa, Mariah Collins of Reading, Joshua Williams of Madison, Wis., Sarah Williams of Reading, Krista (Ken) Coventry of Goodrich and Tanner Morgan; and three great-grandchildren, Layne, Christian and Alora Collins of Reading. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Dorothy (Lauman) Moose; three daughters, Kelly Plonka, Marie Cox and Linda Morris; one stepdaughter, Lin (Ray) Lyons; two stepsons, Gary (Nancy) Lauman and Larry (Christine) Lauman; three sisters, Beverly (Jim) Brown, Karen (Bob) Cordrey, Evon (Kenny) Rufenacht; one sister-in-law, Sue Moose; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; grandson, Jared Rose; and nieces and nephews. Les retired after managing a private estate in Perrysburg for 38 years. He served 10 years on the Sylvania Township Fire Department # 2. He was a Boy Scout leader for 18 years. After retiring he served five years on the Pittsford and Jefferson Township Fire Boards in Michigan. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Pittsford and a member of the Pittsford Lions Club for many years. His greatest joy was going to Beaumont, Texas to fish for the “Big Ones” with his son-in-law, Ray Lyons and grandsons, Justin and Damian Deaz. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Leslie “Les” Freeman Moose will be held at the First Congregational Church of Pittsford (4340 S. Pittsford Road) 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 with Pastor Terry Bobzien officiating. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the First Congregational Church of Pittsford – Building Fund, P.O. Lester Leroy Leister, age 67, of Centreville, passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 4, 1942, in Three Rivers, a son of the late Lester E. and Vivian B. (Caseman) Leister. Lester had resided in the Constantine and Centreville area most of his life. He retired from Viking RV in Centreville and was an avid hunter and life member of the North American Hunting Club. He enjoyed working in his garden, hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are two daughters, Holly (Shawn) Strawser of White Pigeon and Melynda (Douglas) Prusaczyk of Illinois; four grandchildren, Lincoln, Hayley and Ty Strawser and Makenzy Prusaczyk; four sisters, Sonia (Clark) Huckendubler of Mendon, Katie (Larry) Hill of Goshen, Ind., Tena (Rex) Bender of Alabama and Sally Leister of Sturgis; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Charles Willis; a son, Lester “Buddy” Leister; a sister, Dola Weldon; and a brother, Donald Leister. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place.  The family will receive friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. She was born May 3, 1924, in Deerfield to Theodore and Mary Ann (Miller) Miller. On Feb. 14, 1942, she married Leon Brugger, and he survives. Margaret had been employed by Bixby Hospital for 16 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was involved with the 4-H. In addition to her husband, Leon, she is survived by a son, David (Phyllis) Brugger of Clayton; a daughter, Nancy (Allen) Youtzy of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and five sisters. The funeral liturgy for Margaret will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Bob Schramm presiding. Burial will be in Lenawee Hills Memorial Park in Adrian.  Visitation will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, where a vigil prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of service. Margery C. Schaeffer, 89, of Howe, Ind., died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Life Care Center of LaGrange in LaGrange, Ind. Living in Howe, since 1948, Mrs. Schaeffer moved there from Sturgis, where she lived from 1932 until 1948.  Mrs. Schaeffer was a registered nurse working for Sturgis Hospital in Sturgis and LaGrange Hospital in LaGrange, and also was a dental assistant for Dr. Clare Wiedlea in Sturgis.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in LaGrange, where she was very active and was a member in Altar and Rosary Sodality and a past member of the Parrish Council and in her early years she was a lecture and religion instructor.  She was also a former Democratic Precinct Committeeman for Lima Township, held offices in the Democrat Women’s Club, and was a member of the Borgess Hospital Alumni and the National Nurses Association. Mrs. Schaeffer was born on Sept. 28, 1920, in London, Ontario, Canada to Thomas and Elizabeth (Ennett) Burns.  On Aug. 17, 1948, in Sturgis,  she married William C. Schaeffer. He preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 2001. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Frances E. and Richard Hostetler in Churubusco, Ind., and Joan M. and Fenner E. Ambrose of Springdale, Ariz; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom C. and Maria Schaeffer of Isle of Palms, S.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and a son, William Burns Schaeffer on March 31, 2005. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in LaGrange with Father Mark Weaver officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Howe. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, at Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Mary Elizabeth Williams, 80, peacefully passed into the arms of the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009.  She was born Sept. 15, 1929, in rural Cassopolis, to Lenn and Edith (Patterson) McIntyre. She and her nine brothers and sisters attended a little country schoolhouse. While Mary was working at a gift shop in 1946, she met a handsome delivery man. Tom Williams had just returned from the war and they were married in January 1947.  Most of their lives were spent in Michigan where Mary worked for the city manager of East Detroit. She and Tom traveled extensively finding great pleasure in local land and traditions. Following retirement and their eventual move to Wimberley, Texas, Mary devoted her time to helping others through her church and community. She has been an avid fan of football and basketball following her grandsons from pee-wee sports to their involvement as Wimberley Texans.  Mary is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Thomas J. Williams; brothers Jason McIntyre and Joseph McIntyre; and her sister Sarah Phillips. She is survived by her son Thomas Michael Williams and his wife Ida Brady of Coldwater; her daughter Rebecca Marburger and her husband Byron of Wimberley, Texas; her grandchildren Colin James Marburger and John Mason Marburger of Wimberley; her sisters Ann Rohacs, Edith Sharp and Rose Green; and her brothers Jim McIntyre, John McIntyre and Jerry McIntyre.   A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at the Wimberley Presbyterian Church. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, the Immaculate Heart of Mary Guild and the State Employee Retirees Association. Millie enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, her flowers and playing cards. She especially enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews.  Millie is survived by her nieces and nephews, James (Linda) Waite of Bronson, Donald (Margaret) Waite of Paw Paw, Judith Pappas of Sturgis, Dr. John Kurtz of Saline, Carol (Wesley) Kosier of Coldwater, Vernon (Marianne) Roberts of Clarkston and sister Josephine Jasper of Coldwater.  Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Helen Waite, Margaret Parker and sister Cecilia Okeneske. Pauline was born May 18, 1911, in Goshen, Ind., a daughter of the late Charles C. and Mayte (Farmwald) Amsler. Pauline grew up in Goshen and graduated from Goshen High School. On May 18, 1934, she married Harris W. Mast in Goshen, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1975. In 1952, Pauline moved to Colon, where she and her husband operated Lakeview Cleaners for 23 years. She also had worked as a service clerk for Montgomery Ward in Sturgis and before that in Elkhart.  She had also been Colon village treasurer from 1974-1986. She was a member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church and had attended the Colon United Methodist Church. Pauline was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #91 of Colon and an honorary member of the Grand Chapter of the Michigan Eastern Star. She is survived by her grandchildren, Russell (Marcy) Spearow of Jenison, Phillip Spearow  of Lake Okeechobee, Fla., Greg (Corine) Smoker of Union Springs, Ala., Jeff Smoker of Tennessee, Paula  Heaton of Elkhart, Craig (Barb) Mast of Galien, Lisa (Mark) Chandler of Paducah, Ky.; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rita E. Spearow, in August 2005, son; Phillip H. Mast in May of 1997; a grandson, Robert W. Robert E. Downer, 72, beloved husband, father and grandfather, of Quincy, Mich., passed away Oct. 16, 2009, in Bradenton, Fla, at his winter home.  Robert was born Sept. 23, 1937, to Wallace and Gladys (Marquart) Downer in Hillsdale.  Both parents preceded him in death.  He graduated from Quincy High School in 1955 and married Jennie Lee Gerber on May 19, 1956.  He also attended the Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music from 1959-1962.  After graduation, he became director of Camp Selah Christian Camp, Reading, for 15 years with his wife, Jennie.  He was an active member of East Algansee Baptist Church and currently Calvary Baptist Church, Quincy.  During the winter months, he attended Fellowship Baptist in Bradenton.  He worked the majority of his life as co-owner with his father at W.E. Downer and Son Well Drilling and loved his work and all the people he met during those years. Bob and Jennie loved to travel in the U.S. and to many other countries.  They also loved fishing off their boat in Florida during the winter months. Survivors include his wife, Jennie Lee (Gerber) Downer; one son, Mark Downer, Mooresville, N.C.; one daughter, Karen (Downer) Parman, of Fayetteville, Ga.  Also surviving are two sisters, Nancy (Downer) Strang of Quincy  and Carol (Downer) Turner of Edwardsburg; five grandchildren, Kortney Parman of Atlanta, Ga., Brock Parman of Nashville, Tenn., and Mickel, Taylor and Daylee Parman of Fayetteville, Ga. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Quincy Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Frank Snyder officiating. Robert J. Knisel, 94, of Blissfield passed away Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Flower Hospital in Sylvania, Ohio. Robert was born on Sept. 29, 1915, in Blissfield, the son of George and Bertha (Youngs) Knisel. He was married on Dec. 6, 1947, to Hilda DeVriendt. Robert worked as a farmer, and at the General Motors’ Hydromatic plant in Toledo, where he retired from on Jan. 1, 1978. Robert was a charter member of the Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Haines City, Fla., and currently was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Blissfield. He enjoyed deer hunting, golfing in the Blissfield Golf League, and in his younger years was a star baseball player. In 2007, he was inducted into the Blissfield High School Sports Hall of Fame. Surviving is his wife, Hilda Knisel of Blissfield; son, Robert (Elizabeth) Knisel of Perrysburg, Ohio; daughter, Barbara (Anthony) Harrington of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; four grandchildren, Rob (Jessie) Knisel, Robert (Heather) LaPointe, Kelly (Kevin) Kenzierski, and Taylor Knisel; sister, Pricilla Wilt; sister-in-law, Betty Knisel; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters. Following Robert’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Blissfield, with Pastor Paul Benjamin officiating. The family will receive family and friends from 10 a.m. until the start of the service at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Blissfield or to the Lamb of God Lutheran Church of Haines City, Fla. She was married March 11, 1972 to John Rowe, he preceded her in death in 2003. Rose was affiliated with Riggs Beauty Studio for over forty years. She was a graduate of Ayersville High School in Ohio and Riggs Beauty School. She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Star Group at St. Paul’s and the St. Paul’s Guild. She was a member of the Wednesday morning quilting group at the College Baptist Church. Rose enjoyed spending time with her family and she was an avid gardener. Survivors include two sisters, Esther (Randall) Wigent of Reading and Eileen (Philip) Rohlf of Defiance; a brother, Walter (Ann) Zinser of Reading; step-son, Tom (Pat) Rowe of New York; step-grandson, John Rowe; nieces and nephews, John and Maria Zinser, Cindy (Jeff) Miller, Connie (Tom) Condon, Randy (Lori) Wigent, Chris (John) McLemore, Steve (Diane) Rohlf, Jeff (Tami) Rohlf, Dan Rohlf, Heidi (Tim) Keller; aunt Donna Leonhardt of Napoleon; and several Zinser relatives in Germany. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers in infancy, John and Roland; and a niece, Tina Mast. Thomas retired from Aro Corp in Bryan, Ohio in 2006 after 40 years of employment in the carpenter and maintenance departments. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family. Also surviving are four daughters, Tami (Rob) Paulsen, Southgate, Traci Szegedi, Northwood, Ohio, Christina Morgan and Amanda (Dalton) Brown, both of Camden; five sons, Larry Jones Jr., Montpelier, Tommy Jones, Marion, Ohio, John Morgan (fiancé Nikki Collins), Orland, Ind., James Morgan, Montpelier and Robert (Stacy) Morgan, Osseo; four sisters, Pat (Dan) Pearson, Linda (Ed) Terris, Sandra (Dave) Grunden, and Laurie (Roger) Montgomery, all of Camden; one brother, Bill Morgan, Mio, Mich.; 24 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. W. Stewart “Stew” Niblack, Jr. age 79, of Hillsdale, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at his home. Stew was formerly of Britton and spent his winters in Haines City, Fla. He was born Aug. 2, 1930, in Hillsdale to William S. and Marjorie A. (Miner) Niblack, Sr. He graduated from Britton High School. Stew attended Hillsdale College, Wayne State School of Mortuary Science and graduated from Eastern Michigan University. On June 22, 1968, he married Cassie D. Williams. She preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 2000. Stew served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 – 1954, during the Korean War. Stew has worked for funeral homes in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek until becoming the owner and operator of the Niblack Home for Funerals in Britton form 1963 – 1975. He then worked for United Bank and Trust as Branch Office Manager in Britton until his retirement in 1992. Stew had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Britton, the Tecumseh Masons Lodge 69 and the Glen H. Daykin American Legion Post 155 in Britton. He loved to fish. Stew is survived by three sons, W. Scott Niblack and his wife, Kim of Fowlerville, Mich., W. Shawn Niblack and his wife, Carol of St. Charles, Mo. and William S. Niblack III and his wife, Natalie of Tecumseh; two daughters, Denise McCormack and her husband, Jimroy of Holland, and Wendee (Saige) Richardson and her husband, T.J. of Dimondale, Mich.; two sisters, Marcella Lidster and her husband, Raymond of Britton and Penny Becker of Lenoir City, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Cassie, he was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Patricia Beach and a grandson, Justice William Richardson. Funeral services for Stew will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Grace United Methodist Church in Britton with the Rev. Amy Mayo-Moyle officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeway Cemetery.
