Maj. Roy E. Tipton

Friday, January 1, 2010 12:26 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Roy E. Tipton, age 87 of Hillsdale. A lifelong learner, teacher and unabashed idealist, Roy Tipton will be remembered for his steadfast loyalty to his friends, family and country. He was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Madison County Ky., to Roy and Mary Willie (Fielder) Tipton. He began his professional life as a soldier, enlisting in the army in 1939. After a brief, 12-day training period was “turned to duty” as a private in the 10th Infantry. After being stationed at Fort Custer, he was deployed to Iceland in 1941 where, having been promoted to sergeant, he served until he was accepted to Officer Candidate School in December 1942. On April 17, 1942, he graduated from OCS and was commissioned a second lieutenant. This accomplishment was particularly notable since he had not yet completed his high school education. He was eventually assigned to the 351st Infantry Regiment of the 88th Division in May of 1944 and participated in the liberation of Italy from the Nazi invasion. In July of the same year he assumed command of L Company during the battle of Laiatico. After the two other rifle companies of the 3rd Battalion had been rendered incapable of combat by the enemy he led his company in a night attack resulting in the capture of over 200 German soldiers without a single casualty to his men. This action decided the battle and the 3rd Battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its outstanding performance — the equivalent of every man in the unit receiving the Distinguished Service Cross. Eventually attaining the rank of major, he served in the Korean Military Advisory Group during the Korean War and was commander of Fulda Post, Germany, from January 1957 to August 1958. After a career that spanned 20 years he retired from active military duty on Oct. 31, 1959, at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind. In 1963 he graduated from Western Michigan University with a masters degree in guidance and counseling. He later settled in Hillsdale, Michigan where he served as high school guidance counselor from 1966 to 1976 and was a well-known fixture in the community for the remainder of his life. An avid barbershop singer and 35-year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society he sang with the Hudson, Coldwater and Jackson chapters before helping to found the Hillsdale chapter. He is survived by Frances (Ford) Tipton, his wife of 43 years; three children: Sharon Tipton of Kalamazoo; David (Ellen) Tipton of Battle Creek; and Matthew (Josie) Tipton of Sterling Heights; Seven granddaughters: Arrow Tipton; Erin Tipton; Emily (Ian) Bobinac; Sara Tipton; Abigail Tipton; Gwendolyn Tipton; and Meredith Tipton; two great-granddaughters and a great-grandson; a brother: Lemuel Ray (Jean) Tipton of Dry Ridge, Ky.; a beloved niece: Jean Ann (Mark) Powell of Walton, Ky.; two grand-nieces: Rachel and Ashlynn Powell. He was preceded in death by a son: Michael Tipton (2009); and a brother: Denville Tipton (1945). Funeral services for Roy Tipton will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at the VanHorn-EagleFuneral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Ned Wyse officiating. Interment with full military honors will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta at 2:30 p.m. Monday. The family will receive friends for visitation Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home. The Hillsdale Town & Country barbershop chorus will pay a musical tribute at 7 p.m. Suggested memorials include Hospice of Hillsdale, the Hillsdale Town and Country Chorus and Harmony Foundation.  To view this obituary and send condolences, visit www.eaglefuneralhomes.com.

Ryan H. Daenzer, 40, of Clarkston, Mich., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, in Wheeling, Ill., the result of a tragic plane crash. Ryan was our only son, and when his mother and I were told he was killed in a tragic plane crash in Wheeling, Ill., our hearts were ripped from inside of us — we are still bleeding. He was well-liked by his fellow pilots. They concurred that he was an excellent pilot. To have life taken away from you so suddenly leaves a hurt that will stay with you forever. May God grant His grace and peace to all his friends and family — to remember each day to do good, for each day is a gift from God. William 'Billy' Robert Hatchett, Jr.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010 10:00 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

William “Billy” Robert  Hatchett, Jr., age 39, of Lowell, formerly of Tecumseh, passed away unexpectedly early morning Jan. 10, 2010, as a result of a snowmobile accident. Billy was born May 16, 1970, in Brunswick, Maine. He was the cherished and devoted son of William and Rose Anne (Hickey) Hatchett.  In July 2005, he married Katie Hawk. He was a 1988 graduate of Tecumseh High School and completed two years of college. He was a licensed and talented carpenter who loved the planning, creativity and design of his work.  In his words, “being a builder offers a creative release that I crave.” To quote a friend, “Bill Hatchett will work till he bleeds and then work some more.” Many people have experienced his generosity and compassion. Billy’s friends are numerous and lifelong — his commitment to family and friends was boundless. He lived life with enthusiasm and his passions were many: family, friends, music, dancing, Newfoundland heritage, boating, snowmobiling, animals, Michigan football and most of all he treasured his Mom. Besides his wife, Katie, he is survived by his mother, Rose Anne Hatchett; sisters, Jani (Matt) Cooke and their children, Lincoln, Keenan and Piper Rose; Amy (John) Rotche and their children, Payton and Quinn; many aunts, uncles and numerous cousins. Each cousin had a special place in his heart. Also surviving are his father- and mother-in-law, Denny and Linda Hawk; sister-in-law, Kirsten (Matt) Lahti and their daughter, Sienna; brother-in-law, Dusty (Marianne) Hawk and their sons, Dethan and Eli. His absence will be immensely felt by his nieces and nephews.  Billy has joined his father, William Robert Hatchett, Sr., in God’s arms. We ask God to send his angels to happily take him into eternity. Billy’s presence in this world will be deeply missed. A Memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh, with Fr. Daniel Wheeler officiating. A Vigil Prayer service will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 506 N. Union St., Tecumseh. Services will also be held in Lowell at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, with the Rev. Dean Bailey officiating. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 13, at the Roth-Gerst Funeral Home, 305 N. Hudson St., Lowell. Condolences to the family may be made at www.pursefuneralhome.com.
