He was born April 29, 1929, in Detroit, the only child of Elmer and Edna (Bauman) Jewell; both are deceased. Jerry served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, 1949-1953. He was a sonar man on the submarine USS Cubera. He received his Mechanical Engineering Degree from Tri-State University in Indiana and his Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Also surviving are two fantastic sons, Jerry Jr. (Laura) Jewell of Waterford, Mich., and Ken (Sylvia) Jewell of Augusta, Mich; his grandchildren, whom he adored and in whom he had so much pride, Gregg, Melanie, Evan, Jordan Marie, Robert, Chantel (Cameron) Varwig and Abby; a precious great-grandson, Hayden Varwig; and two very special people who have been so supportive during his illness, sister-in-law and husband, Suette and Dave Overholt of Downs, Ill. Jerry was an engineer at Chrysler Corp. for 30 years. He began his career in Pomana, Calif., at Convair Aircraft Company and got his pilot’s license while there. In the ’50s he developed a gas additive for Go-Cart engines and raced for several years. Jerry was an avid golfer, getting a hole-in-one in 1993.
