Beth Marie Barton

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 12:28 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Beth Marie Barton, age 48, a lifelong resident of the Athens and Quincy areas, took her own life in her home during the morning of Friday, Jan. 22, 2010. She entered the world on May 12, 1961 in Community Hospital in Battle Creek, the fourth child and only daughter to parents Thurman Douglas “Bart” Barton and Lee Ella M. (Bates) Barton. She attended school in East Leroy and Athens, graduating in 1979. After high school, she strived to continue her education and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Nazareth College in Kalamazoo. Beth embodied a profound love for travel and her career as a nurse allowed her to journey throughout much of the United States, as well as overseas. Her many travels for work further fed her hunger to see the world, and she was eager to share these adventures with her family. Beth soon created a tradition of having an annual family trip with her beloved nieces and nephews, of which the destinations included Cedar Point, King’s Island, Disney World and most recently a very special cruise to the Bahamas aboard the ship Disney Wonder. Beth’s personal interests were both diverse and inspiring; she loved musicals, theater productions and had a fondness for Shakespeare, a pastime which contributed to annual trips with her brother Bruce to the Shakespeare festival in Stratford, Canada. She also enjoyed cruises, reading, baking (she made the best buttermilk pie in the whole world!), taking trips to the zoo with her great niece and nephew, and she loved to dress up for Halloween. Beth was extremely proud of her career as a labor and delivery nurse, and showed a great passion for making sure that her patients were well taken care of. She played an instrumental part in helping so many new lives enter the world, and her career field has suffered a great loss with her passing. She had most recently completed a contract with Battle Creek Health System, and she will be greatly missed by her patients and co-workers. Beth is survived by her mother; brothers Doug (Cheryl) Barton of Marshall and Gary (Vicki) Barton of Athens; her nieces Heather (Todd), Hollie, and Andrea (Roland); her nephews Chad and Shawn; her great-nieces Sterling, Brinn, Jazmin and Fiona; and her great-nephews Tommy, Tyler, RJ and Jayden. She is also survived by her very special feline friend, Mr. Paws. Beth will forever be missed by her friends and family, but especially by her great nieces and nephews who so dearly enjoyed her company. She was preceded in death by her brother Bruce and her father. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Binder Park Zoo or the Calhoun County Humane Society, in care of the funeral home. A funeral service in remembrance of Beth’s life will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at 2 p.m. at George White Funeral Home, located at 220 N. Chicago Street, Litchfield, MI 49252; phone (517) 542-3098. In an effort to honor Beth’s wishes, no visitation will be held prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow the service at Whig Center Cemetery in Butler Township. Personal messages for the family may be directed to the funeral home either via phone or email at georgewhite@dmcibb.net.

John Henry Yoe Jr.

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 6:43 AM

John Henry Yoe Jr. John Henry Yoe Jr., a Ludington resident for 23 years who captained his own charter boat, the Polar Bear (Pol'or Bare), in the local waters of Lake Michigan, died at his home on Friday, January 15, 2010. Yoe, who succumbed after a heroic, eight-year struggle with lung cancer, was surrounded by his daughters, family, and his wife of 53 years, the former Patricia Stevens of St. Clair Shores, Michigan at the time of his death. John Yoe was born on August 31, 1936, in Detroit, the son of John H. and Edna Curlett Yoe (His mother, Grace Stoll Yoe, died in his third year). His father, John H. Yoe Sr., was a St. Clair Shores judge who became city attorney of St. Clair Shores. John Yoe Jr. joined the St. Clair Shores Police Department when he was 21, and retired at age 50 as a lieutenant, when he and his wife, Pat, relocated to Ludington. An example of Yoe's extraordinary dedication to police service came one late October night in 1968 when a woman drove her car into the freezing waters of Lake St. Clair. Without hesitation, Yoe dove into the water as the woman's car was sinking. He forced open her car door and pulled the woman to safety. For that act, he was awarded a citation from the Michigan House of Representatives, and named Policeman of the Month. He was decorated numerous times as an officer for his sharp-shooting skills. He studied law at Wayne State University in Detroit, and, in spite of a fear of heights, became an accomplished pilot. After moving to Ludington, in addition to his charter business, Yoe was an officer of the Ludington Boat Club, and served as its treasurer. He was known to residents and local businesspeople for his warm humor and quiet, joking ways, but also as a genuine ambassador to many who traveled to Ludington for fishing excursions and who made use of Yoe's charter service and extensive knowledge of local waters and fishing sites. In addition to his wife, Pat, John Yoe is survived by their four daughters, Faye Grant (Stephen) of Los Angeles, Calif., Kimberly Yoe of Roseville, Mich., Sandra Fugiel (Todd) of Fenton, Mich., and Patsy Doanato (Pete) of Shelby Township, Mich.; his sister, Sandra Mackle of Bloomfield Hills Mich., his brother, Henry Yoe of Deford, Mich., as well as five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service for John Yoe will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, at Our Lady of Hope Parish, St. Gertrude Church, 28839 Jefferson Avenue, in St. Clair Shores. In lieu of flowers, memory contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan 5177 West U.S. 10, Suite 2, Ludington, MI 49431, or the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, 100 Michigan NE NC-004, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
