Dawn M. Stuut 50, Schoolcraft  Dawn Marie (Barr) Stuut has gone to be with her Lord after a brave fight with melanoma cancer.   She was born Oct. 6, 1959, in Sturgis, Mich. Dawn was a nurse for 30 years at Bronson’s NICU and her “babies” were her passion.  She was awarded the Daisy Award for outstanding nursing excellence and was loved by her babies’ families who saw in her compassion and love.  Her infectious smile lit up any room she entered and she always made the time to listen and talk and spread her love.  She was a friend to all and a friend to many. She loved her family fiercely and was there for every event and to cheer them on. She was a beloved sister, second to none and a caring daughter. Her husband was her soul mate and life mate. Donald A. German, 78, of Burr Oak, Mich., passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 17, 2010, at Matthew 7:7 Adult Foster Care Home in White Pigeon. He was born May 3, 1931, in Hillsdale, Mich., a son to the late Harold and Beulah (Norris) German. Don had resided most of his life in Burr Oak. On March 29, 1952, he married Alice Virene Smith at the parsonage of the United Methodist Church in Fremont, Ind. She died July 26, 2003. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army earning the rank of private. Following 25 years of employment as a gifted and talented machinist he retired from Grav-i-flo in Sturgis. He had also worked as a machinist at North American Aviation, Inc. where he was commended for personal sacrifice and exemplary performance in the fabricating of mechanical parts for the Apollo Program. He was a member of the Burr Oak United Methodist Church. He had a true love of the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Don’s greatest pride and joy was his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a man of few words with a wealth of knowledge and guidance. He is survived by one daughter, Diane (her life partner Roger Kline) Thrasher of Sturgis; two sons, Donald H. (Theresa) German of Idaho and Dann W. (Janet) German of Kansas; 11 grandchildren, Keith, Trisha, Marshall, Justin, Jared, Trevor, Troy, Janae, Jess, Shannon and Alicin; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Roberta Smoker of Bronson; one brother, Terrence German of Sturgis; lifelong friend, Howard Gest of Burr Oak and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one daughter, Dawn German and one sister, Lois Avery. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A private graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak where full military rites will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. The Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, is handling the arrangements. The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mr. German’s memory consider Hospice of Sturgis, P.O. Florence L. Houttekier, 95, of Riga passed away on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at Provincial House in Adrian. She was born on Nov. 17, 1914, in Riga Township, Mich., the daughter of John and Ida (Kruse) Fisher. Florence married Elmer Fred Seeburger and he preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1936. She was married to Albert Houttekier in 1937 and he also preceded her in death on Oct. 15, 1980. Florence devoted her life to her family. She held various jobs outside the home including factory work, farm work and also working as a cook at the Bixby Medical Center in Adrian. Florence was the past president of the Blissfield American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and also held the position of Chaplain. She had a love for the outdoors and all of the activities it included, especially fishing and traveling up north to places such as Tawas City and Mackinac Island.  She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and spending time with her family. Surviving are her children, Elmer J. (Nancy) Seeburger of Blissfield, Alice Posten of Adrian, John (Sue) Houttekier of Blissfield, Irene Kastel of Morenci and Kenneth (Donna) Houttekier of Adrian; 18 grandchildren and 38 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer F. Seeburger; second husband, Albert Houttekier; two sons, Albert Houttekier, Jr. and Gerald Houttekier; a daughter, Mary Fuhrman; and two grandchildren, Shelley and Scotty Keefer. Funeral services for Florence will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield with Pastor Paul Benjamin officiating. Burial will follow in Riga Cemetery in Riga Township. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

S. Army.  He retired from Clark Equipment Co. where he had worked 10 years.  On Jan. 7, 1977, he married Emma (Signor) and she preceded him in death in 1992. Survivors include his longtime companion, Tina Church; two sisters,  Ellen (Clarence) Conklin, Jonesville and Joan (Hugh) Conklin, Jonesville; two brothers, Philip Houseknecht, Jonesville and  Jim (Jean) Potter, Jonesville. He was also preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment will follow in the Johnson Cemetery, Scipio Township.  Visitation is scheduled Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor or the American Cancer Society.

Jack C. Henry, 76, of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.  He was born April 17, 1933 in Shiloh, Mich., to Carl John and Bessie (Lowe) Henry.  He was married Oct. 27, 1979 to Ann Mygrant and she survives. Jack was a retired pharmacist and the previous owner and operator of H.S. Pharmacy in Hillsdale from 1958-1974.   He retired from the Department of Licensing and Regulation for State of Michigan.  Jack was a member of the tax review board for Hillsdale Township for several years.  He previously headed the cancer drive for the Hillsdale County, American Cancer Society.  He served on various pharmaceutical associations.  Jack was an avid fisherman and hunter.  He collected antique vases and loved gardening. Surviving besides his wife Ann are three daughters, Kim Henry of Knoxville, Tenn., Deborah (Larry) Donahue of Sumnar, Mich., and Juli (Dennis) Bowerman of Coldwater; a son, Terry (Marsha) Wiegman of Haslet; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother. Memorial services for Jack Henry will be Monday at noon at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hillsdale with Pastor Julie Carey officiating.  Interment will take place at a later date.  The family will receive friends for visitation Monday from 11 a.m. until services at noon at the church.  Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. He was a past member of the Blissfield Kiwanis, the International Fabricare Institute and Michigan Institute of Laundering and Dry Cleaning. Surviving are his children, Martin Lippens of Richardson, Texas, Julie (Chuck) Drake of Independence, Ky., Rhonda Lippens of Blissfield, Brian Lippens of Toledo, Ohio, Rodney (Teri) Lippens of Blissfield and Mackenzie Lippens of Blissfield; three brothers, Julian (Marlene) Lippens, Jr. of Toledo, Ohio, Gary Lippens of Arlington, Va., Randy (Barbara) Lippens of Blissfield; sister, Gloria Lippens of Belleville, Mich.; five grandchildren and his loving dog, Macy. John Henry Peebles, of San Rafael, Calif., passed away Monday, Jan.11, 2010, at the age of 94. He was born Jan. 2, 1916 ,in Hudson, MI, the fourth child of four, to Willis Peebles and Nellie (Hawkins) Peebles.  John grew up on a farm in Hudson and his uncle had one of the few trucks around at the time.  He graduated from Hillsdale College with an accounting degree. John flew 30 missions over Europe as a navigator in B-24s and received the Distinguished Flying Cross.  He met his future wife, Patricia Boyd, at Steel Products in Hillsdale and they were married on Feb. 10, 1945.  They took a trip across the northern states of the United States and settled in Torrance, Calif., where they had friends from Michigan.  They moved to Temple City in 1951 where they lived until 2007 when they moved to San Rafael to be near their daughter and her family.  His son and his family still live in Temple City.  John started working for Southern Counties Gas Co.,in 1948 and retired as supervisor of disbursements in Accounting. At that time he went to work in Pat's travel agency. John was very active with Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and was assistant manager and manager for many years.  He was also active in Kiwanis. He had great pride and joy in his three grandchildren.  He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His wife of 64 years, Pat, preceded his death last June.  He is survived by his son, Frederick (Vivian) Peebles of Temple City; his daughter Mary (James) Adams of San Rafael; grandchildren, Whitney Peebles, Julie Jacobson, James Adams, and great-grandson, Wes Peebles; as well as nephews and a niece and their families. Funeral services for John Henry Peebles will be at 11a.m. Monday, at the Van Horn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Terry Bobzien officiating.  Internment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jefferson Township.  The family will receive friends for visitation from 3-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Joy Lee Ferguson, age 70, of Cement City passed away on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at her home. She was born on Feb. 28, 1939, in Milford, Iowa to Elmer B. and Gretchen L. (Bates) Van der Aarde. She married Robert E. Ferguson on Nov. 5, 1997, in Somerset. He survives. Joy was raised in Spencer, Iowa, where she attended Spencer High School. In 1973, she married Larry Schlicht. They resided in Sac City, Iowa, where Joy worked as a controller for Noble Manufacturing, a division of Lear Siegler. They later moved to Minnesota where Joy sold toy farm equipment. She invented tire chains for toy tractors, forming her own company, Craftsmanship Unlimited. It is the only known company of its kind. All her life, Joy loved to cook. Coming from a family of diabetics, she was a strong advocate for diabetes detection. It was natural then, that she created the diabetic cookbook, Living with Diabetes, for the Interlake Lions Club, where she was an active member. The book was well received and went on to be the only known diabetic cookbook to be published in Braille. It is registered with the Library of Congress. Joy enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, and genealogy. Joy was a regular vendor at area flea markets where she and Robert sold baked goods, handcrafted items, and old records. She was a member of the Somerset Congregational Church. Surviving Joy are four sons, Timothy Schlicht of Van Nuys, Calif., Shane Schlicht of Sac City, Iowa, Kevin (Evelyn) Ferguson of Cement City; David (Wendie) Ferguson of Bentonville, Ark., one daughter, Christine (David) Knox of Pittsford; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. Visitation will be held from 10 – 11 a.m. Saturday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. The family has suggested donations go to Hillsdale County Senior Services or the Somerset Congregational Church.

Watching sports on television and old westerns were favorites of his as well. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Dean was preceded in death by his brother A.D. Brown and grandson Adrian Hafley. Lutifali Ansari, 74, of Coldwater, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 in Harlingen, Texas. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Coldwater with Rev. Fr. Dan Doctor and Rev. Fr. Fred Pasche officiating. Interment of ashes will be at West Girard Cemetery in Girard Twp. The family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Lutifali was born Feb. 14, 1935 in Pakistan to Abdulqayoom and Nooralnisa Ansari. He married Marylou Janes on April 18, 1970 in Northville. Lutifali attended the University of SIND in Pakistan, Wisconsin State and graduated from Michigan State University with his Masters in Social Work. He worked for Caro State Hospital, the Department of Social Services in Detroit and then the Coldwater Regional Center, retiring from the State of Michigan after 32 years. Mr. Ansari then worked for Pines Behavioral Health in Coldwater for ten more years. He was an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Church where he volunteered with bingo and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. Lutifali was a member of the National Association of Social Work and he was an avid bridge player, belonging to the American Contract Bridge League. Lutifali is survived by his wife Marylou, his son Joseph R. and Rebecca Ansari of Louisville, Kent. and his grandchildren Chalen, Jackson, Samantha and Emily Ansari. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; three sisters, Edith Cupp, Jewell Sawtell and Marjorie Bailey; and by a brother, Francis Fuller.  Services were held Jan. 8 in Flat Rock.

Nancy Kay (Grimm) Roberts, the daughter of Ben and Jean (Martin) Grimm, was born Sept. 17, 1943, in Peoria, Ill. She passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 66. She graduated from Morton, Ill., High School in 1961. Following graduation from high school, Kay attended Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Peoria and graduated in 1964, with her degree as a registered nurse. On Dec. 20, 1964, Kay was united in marriage to James J. Roberts in Morton. In 1965, the couple moved to Estherville to make their home and Kay was employed at the Estherville Medical Center and Holy Family Hospital for 22 years working in various departments as an RN. She also worked 10 years in Hospice and the Home Health Department. She spent 10 years in the Employee Health and Wellness Department of the hospital. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville; the Estherville Garden Club; Northstar Quilt Guild; American Cancer Society Relay For Life Committee; Luminary Chairperson; and facilitated Estherville Area Cancer Support Group for a number of years. Left to cherish Kay's memory are her husband, James of Estherville; her children, David James Roberts and his wife, Lenea, of Sturgis and their sons, Damian, Joshua and Jesse; Jeffrey Joseph Roberts of Estherville and sons, Jordan and Jaden Roberts; siblings Janice Kaufman and her husband, Jack, of Rochester, N.Y.; Kenneth M. Grimm and his wife, Peg, of Windham, Vt., and their children, Jenna, Nicole, Amanda and Rachel; sister-in-law Betty Adams and her husband, Bill, of Blue Springs, Mo., and their children, Peggy Smith, Doug Nolte and Mark Nolte. Kay has been preceded in death by her parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law; and aunts and uncles. Pearl Nickelson, age 86, formerly of Johnson City, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, in Adrian, Mich. Mrs. Nickelson was a lifelong native of Johnson City and recently moved to Adrian during her illness to be with family. She formerly lived for several years in the John Sevier Center of Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late Wildy Waters and Cardie Scalf Miller. Mrs. Nickelson loved to attend church and loved to sing. She was a member of Open Arms Full Gospel Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nickelson was preceded in death by her stepfather, Roby Miller; two brothers, Edward Miller and R.M. Miller; and a son-in-law, Johnny Bennett. Survivors include two sons, Robert Nickelson of Johnson City, Tenn., and Gary (Olivia) Nickelson of Adrian; one daughter, Edna Bennett of Johnson City, Tenn.; two brothers, Norman Miller of Unicoi, Tenn., and Tom Miller of Asheville, N.C.; one sister, Naomi (Leonard) Britt of Adrian; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mrs. Nickelson will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, in the chapel of Woodall-Anderson & Dugger Funeral Home, Johnson City, Tenn., with the Rev. Steve Potter officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 5 until 7 p.m. in the chapel at the funeral home. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Reuben (Edna) Helmuth of LaGrange, Ind., and Mary Krugh of Howe, Ind.; four nieces and several cousins. Also a close friend, Don Dilts of LaGrange, Ind.. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Terry Krugh. According to his wishes, there will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Richard Paul Niedbalski, age 72, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at his home. He was born in Terra Haute, Ind., on Sept. 5, 1937,  the son of Eugene  and Clara (Klosowski) Niedbalski. In 1955, Richard graduated from St. Joseph High School in South Bend. He served in the U.S. Navy. On July 5, 1975, Richard married Lois Ann Purta in South Bend. She preceded him in death on Dec. 6, 1999.  Richard retired from Challenger Company Elkhart, Ind., and previously worked at D&J Body Shop, Nemeth’s Body Shop, and Mersits, all in South Bend. Richard enjoyed vacationing in the Upper Peninsula and also loved restoring cars. He was a member of the America Legion #73, in Sturgis and the Disabled American Veterans. Surviving Richard are his daughters, Marilyn Kaye (John) Lalonde of Granger, Ind., Nanette (William) Esler of Niles, and Deanna Hanks of Mishawaka, Ind.; sons Michael (Julie) Niedbalski of Bremen, Ind., and Rick (Sarah) Niedbalski of South Bend, Ind.; and stepson Raymond (Tammy) Sheneman of Niles.  Also surviving are his 15 grandchildren, Jennifer, Tanya, Adam, Heather, Maya, Erin, Keri, Lucas, Karissa, Mitchell, Margaret, James, Kyle, Anthony and Shaun and three great-grandchildren, Izabelle, Christopher and Jesse. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois Niedbalski, and stepson David Sheneman. Relatives and friends will be received Tuesday from  6-8 p.m. at the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine. Robert F. Myers, 82, of Waldron passed away early Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 2010, at Fairlawn Haven in Archbold, Ohio. He was born Feb. 1, 1927, to the late Floyd F. and Huldah (Basinger) Myers. Robert married Joyce Gottschalk on July 14, 1951, in Angola, Ind., and she survives. Robert was a lifelong farmer and a past laborer and member of the Lauber Hill Reformed Mennonite Church since 1955. He will be sadly missed by his wife, children, and grandchildren, whom he dearly loved. Surviving Robert besides his wife, Joyce, are two sons, Dave (Viki) Myers and Steve (Darlene) Myers all of Waldron; one brother, Oakley Myers of Waldron; six grandchildren, Rob, Jen, Andy, Adam, Shelby, and Sean; and seven great-grandchildren, Brody, Paige, Brianna, Dakota, Christian, Ryan, and Autumn. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Rolland, Darrell, and Francis; and a sister-in-law, Marian Myers. A funeral service for Robert Myers will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Lauber Hill Reformed Mennonite Church in rural Archbold with James Basinger and Mark Bankert officiating.  Interment will follow at Lauber Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends for visitation at the Eagle Funeral Home-Barrett Chapel in Fayette on Monday from 5-8 p.m., and Tuesday from 1-3 and 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Lauber Hill Reformed Mennonite Church. Robert G. Waffle, 79, of Burlington, died Jan. 15, 2010. in Battle Creek. He was born Nov. 17, 1930 in Tekonsha to Ernest L. and Dorothy (Aldrich) Waffle. He lived and farmed in the Tekonsha area all his life. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict in a military police unit. He  served as a trustee and board member of the Tekonsha Township Board of Review and Zoning Board for several years and was a member of the Tekonsha Historical Society. He is survived by a special friend Glenna McCreery; his children and stepchildren, Kathy (Russ) Shamplo of Pittsford, Sid Waffle of Battle Creek, Marie (Thom) Hood of Battle Creek, Julie (Robert) Sizemore of Burlington, Pamela (Steve) Citowitz of Indianapolis, and Patricia (Doug) Howard of London, Ky.; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, a brother Ernie (Billie) Waffle and sisters Doris King and Vicki Enright, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Carl (Spark) Waffle and a stepson Walt Waffle. Bob raised Limousin cattle and belonged to the Michigan Limousin Assoc. and the North American Limousin Foundation. He was a former Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day Parade, was very active in community affairs, enjoyed hunting for many years with the Cliff Doolittle family in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and watching his grandchildren participate in 4-H activities. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Putnam’s of Tekonsha. Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Union Church United Church of Christ with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Mr. Reid Waffle and Pastor Barbara Pryor will officiate with burial in the Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tekonsha Historical Society. SARASOTA, Fla. — Alexander "Sasha" Stolley died peacefully on Jan. 14, 2010, at his home in Sarasota, Fla., surrounded by his loved ones. His generous loving spirit will be greatly missed by his family and friends.Born in Germany of parents who fled the Russian Revolution in 1918, Sasha grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, attending University School and the University of Cincinnati, where he received a degree in engineering. Sasha and Patricia Martin of Cincinnati were wed in 1942. He then served in WWII in Europe from 1943-46 as First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He became involved in public relations and journalism, which led to his career in advertising. After the war he went to work for an advertising agency in Cincinnati, which eventually became Northlich Stolley.In 1973, Sasha and Elizabeth "Bette" Scott Vogt were married and spent many happy years together. When not working, they spent time traveling the world and at their summer home in Interlochen. After retiring, Sasha and Bette bought a sailboat on which they lived and sailed for several years before moving to Boca Grande, Fla., in 1985. There Sasha followed two of his great loves, golf and singing bass in barber shop quartets and choruses. They moved from Boca Grand to Sarasota in 2005.Sasha was actively involved in and supported many civic, social, business and arts organizations, such as the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, the Interlochen Center for the Arts, and many others. He loved spending time with his family, music, art, photography, politics, and flying, as well as playing tennis, squash and golf.Sasha was predeceased by first wife, Patricia Martin Stolley; sister, Janet Stolarevsky; father, Mihail Stolarevsky; and mother, Tatiana Stolarevsky.He leaves his wife, Bette; and his father's, wife Kathryn Fell Stolarevsky. He also leaves his five children, Christopher Stolley, Laura Stolley Smith and husband Timothy Smith, Peter Stolley and wife Christine Holtz, Annabel Stolley, and Megan Berry. In addition, he leaves Bette's four children, Fredrick Vogt and wife Patricia, Robert Vogt and wife Sherry, Elizabeth Vogt and partner Candy McCullough, and Max Vogt. Sasha leaves six grandchildren, Eric Johnson, Cpt. Oliver Stolley, Tassaday Smith, Colleen Stevens, Emily Hetzer, and Amelia Guigou. He also leaves five great-grandchildren.The family is planning a celebration of Sasha's life this summer in northern Michigan.
