Alfred W. Eppens, Jr. Alfred W. Eppens, Jr., age 88, of New Baltimore., died January 27, 2010, at his home. Born April 28, 1921, in Detroit, Mr. Eppens was a funeral director and owned Eppens-VanDeweghe Funeral Home in Detroit. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association and National Funeral Directors Association. He is survived by his wife, Rose Anne (nee Friday), whom he married April 23, 1949, in Anchorville. Children, Gail Casanova of Casco, Bonnie Willcock of Marquette and Alfred J. Eppens of New Baltimore. Seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred W. Sr. and Corinne. Visitation 2:30-8 pm. Sunday with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Gendernalik Funeral Home, 35259 23 Mile Road, New Baltimore, and 10:30 a.m. until time of 11 a.m. liturgy Monday February 1, 2010, at Immaculate Conception Church, 7051 Church Road, Ira Township. Rev. Robert Witkowski officiating. Burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit.

She graduated from Adrian High School. On Jan. 30, 1959, JoAnn married Harry West Jr. in Adrian. Harry, her husband of over 50 years, survives. She was an active member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. JoAnn also was a member of TOPS Club of Adrian In addition to her husband, JoAnn is survived by three daughters, Jan (Tom) Negus, Jacque (Kevin) Mullane and Judy (Joe) Siwecki, all of Adrian; a son, Mark; stepson, Harry West, III; six grandsons, Daniel Negus, Tim (Stephanie) Ruple, Eric Siwecki, Jonathon Ruple, Bradley Casey and Dylan Mullane; two sisters; and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, a son and a daughter. At JoAnn’s request, cremation will take place. Ken worked for GM at the Tech Center for 43 years until he retired in 2003. He was active in the community and was a prominent coach in the Sterling Heights Parks and Rec Leagues where he coached baseball, basketball and football. Beloved husband of Joyce (nee Soszynski) for 49 cherished years. Mardine Towne, 83, of Baldwin Street, Morenci, passed away Friday afternoon, Jan. 29, 2010, at Provincial House in Adrian under the watchful care of Hospice of Lenawee. She was born in Toledo, Ohio, on June 27, 1926, to Lysle and Alta (Brehm) Sutton. On Oct. 11, 1944, Mardine married Robert Towne in Fayette. They celebrated 57 years of marriage before his passing on Aug. 23, 2002. Mardine graduated from the Gorham Fayette High School Class of 1944. She devoted her time to being a homemaker and mother. She served over 20 years as a part-time employee of the Postal Service in Fayette and also volunteered as a librarian at the Fayette Normal Memorial Library. She was a member of the Fayette United Methodist Church and the Northwest Ohio Mother of Twins Club. Mardine enjoyed reading, traveling and attending the sporting events and school activities that involved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Two of her greatest pleasures were the yearly gatherings of the Brehm family and of the Class of 1944. Mardine is survived by four sons, Ronald (Jerolyn) Towne of Addison, Richard Towne of Canton, Mich., Roger (Charlotte) Towne of Brighton, Mich., and Ramon (Lynn) Towne of San Francisco, Calif.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, stepbrother, stepsister and a great-granddaughter. A funeral service for Mardine Towne will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-Barrett Chapel in Fayette with the Rev. Kathy Currier officiating. Private interment will take place at the Pleasant View Union Cemetery in Fayette. The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., and Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Stair Public Library in Morenci or Hospice of Lenawee. Surviving besides her husband Carl are two children, Melinda Breault and Brian Bowman, both of Hillsdale; her mother, June Dull of Osseo; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Barb (Mike) Vernier of Coldwater and Sherry (Phil) Shaw of North Adams; two step-sons, Kevin and Scott; two half-sisters, Linda and Pat and a half-brother, Joe; and best friend Becky Hanning. She was preceded in death by her father, Lorain and step-father, Don Dull. Melanie May Collins, 32, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday Jan. 23, 2010 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born July 25, 1977 in Coldwater. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1995 and was a substitute bus driver for Camden-Frontier Schools. Melanie received a medical assistant degree from Ross Medical School and was attending Kellogg Community College to become a registered nurse. She enjoyed cooking, music and dancing, had a wonderful sense of humor and an outgoing personality, and loved her family. On Oct. 23, 1999, she married John Collins and he survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Allison Marie Collins, Hillsdale; a son, Jared Michael Collins, Hillsdale; parents, Marion Leroy and Alice (Houtz) Stemen,  Allen; sister, Amy (Jack Church) Stemen, Homer; and a brother, Joshua (Sarah) Stemen, Quincy. She was preceded in death by two grandmothers and two grandfathers. Funeral services are at 1 pm. Thursday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor Paul Pickell officiating. Mildred L. Bowman, age 91 of Addison, passed away on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale. She was born on Oct. 13, 1918, in Medina Township to Curtis H. and Theresa (Dillion) McKibbin.  She married Maxwell J. Bowman on Jan. 16, 1938, in Addison, and he preceded her in death on June 14, 1974. Mildred graduated from Addison High School in 1937.  She operated the former Bowman’s Bakery in Addison from 1938-1940 and then she worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti.  She was a cook at Addison Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1988.  She also was a homemaker all her life. Mildred was a member of the former Addison Methodist Church, member of the Addison Senior Citizens Center and the Carousel Club of Addison. Surviving are one son, Owen H. (Jane) Bowman of Addison, one daughter, Marlene (Paul) Gillespie of Dartown, Ohio, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one sister, Juanita Jennings of North Adams, nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell, one son, Dr, George E. Bowman, one daughter, Maxine Gerber and one brother, Charles McKibbin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Pastor Will Snyder officiating.  Burial will take place in Dibble Cemetery, Wheatland Township.  Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today. Rosemary had owned and operated an interior decorating business and for many years she had been the Assistant Program Director and Trip Coordinator at the HC Burnside Senior Center in Coldwater, retiring in 2008. She was very devout in her Catholic faith, belonging to St. Charles Borromeo Church, where she was a member of the St. Elizabeth guild and proud to have served as the first female president of the Coldwater Downtown Business Association. Rosemary and her husband Sam loved to dance and proudly took second place in the first annual Coldwater “Dancing with Celebrities” competition in 2008. She enjoyed reading and loved to cook, but most of all she enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. Rosemary is survived by her husband Sam, her sons Joe and Deb Russo of Reston Va. and Sam and Karen Russo of Erlanger, Kent., her daughter Mary and Jim Buettner of Belmont, her grandchildren Joe, Angela, Tiffany, Vanessa, Sophia, Elissa, Regina and Samantha five great grandchildren. SAGINAW — Mr. Vernon H. Miller, 87, of Saginaw, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at Covenant Health Care Cooper. The son of the late Cloid and Stella (Kintner) Miller, Vernon was born Sept. 22, 1922, in Saginaw, and moved to Traverse City 1968. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years during World War II in the South Pacific Islands. Vernon was previously married to Wanda May Gibson on July 30, 1944. He then married Beulah Greg on Dec. 26, 1963. She survives him. Vernon was employed in construction for most of his life. He built custom homes in Saginaw, Bay City, Hemlock and Traverse City until his retirement in 2002. He was an officer in the Home Builders Association in Saginaw and started the Traverse City Home Builders Association. Vernon enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating.Surviving are two children, Larry Miller and his wife, Brenda Lemmer of Saginaw, and Kathryn Stevens and her husband, John of Wadsworth, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Angela and Peter Voorhees of Alpharetta, Ga., and Cherolyn and Michael Bright of Lake City, Fla.; five grandchildren, Tara (Greg) Gaume, Trenton (Jamie) Miller, Brent (Jennifer) Stevens, Bayne (David) MacKenzie, Lindsay Lemmer and her fiancé, Michael Phillips; four step-grandchildren, Scott, Paul and Alisha Voorhees, and Lisa (Dan) Fox; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Vernon was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother, Clara Young, Dorothy Eimers and Ernest Miller.Funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road, (between Shattuck and McCarty). The Rev. Kathy Snedeker will officiate. Honoring Mr. Miller's wishes, cremation will follow. Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family will be present on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Victoria K. Spreitzer Victoria K. Spreitzer, formerly Sr. Joan Paul, O.P., age 67, of Huntington Woods, died January 22, 2010. Victoria dedicated part of her life as an Adrian Dominican Sister (Sr. Joan Paul, O.P.). She completed her BA in education at Siena Heights University after which she taught in the metropolitan Detroit area. She was an extremely talented seamstress and artist taking great interest in detail. Victoria had great empathy and love for the disadvantaged, always having a ready smile and words to uplift and encourage. After leaving the sisterhood, she continued to teach at various Catholic schools until her rheumatoid arthritis became so debilitating that she had to retire. She married Mark Spreitzer in 1978 and was a loving and devoted wife, daughter, aunt, sister and friend. She faced the pain and struggles of her illness with great courage. The highlights of her life were her annual trips to Eagle Harbor in the Upper Peninsula, and also her beloved pets, Chester and Oliver. She always said, "When I do go, it won't be because I haven't done everything possible to keep myself going." She was truly an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. Victoria was an active member of the Right to Life organization, and a lifelong dedicated member of the Catholic Church, of which she was very proud. She truly knew the meaning of life and celebrated each day. Beloved wife of Mark. Loving daughter of Laverne (nee Cotleur) and the late Victor Kryst. Dear sister of Sharon (Gerald) Balnius, Susan (Charles) Byrne, James (Cindy) Kryst and Thomas Kryst. Loving aunt of Suzi Barrett, Katie Byrne, Mary Scheidt, Patricia Byrne, Heather Kryst, Janice Spreitzer, Jeffrey Barrett, Christopher Barrett and Joseph Spreitzer, as well as numerous cousins and abiding friends. Also survived by her special aunt, Bernice DiCesare. A Rosary will be held Friday, March 19, 8 p.m. and a Memorial Mass Saturday, March 20, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Royal Oak. W. Gayle "Bill" Davis, 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Boyne City on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010. He was born in Grand Rapids, on Jan. 19, 1931, to J. Warne and Florence (Spidel) Davis. Bill was still an infant when his family moved back to East Jordan, where his mother was born and raised. He had many fond memories of summers spent on his grandparents, Wilbur and Bertha Spidel's, farm. After graduating from East Jordan High School with the class of 1949, Bill worked for Buick in Flint, riding his Indian motorcycle back to East Jordan every weekend. In 1951, he married the former Esther Zitka. They were later divorced.
