Alfred J. Pallmig Otter Lake Alfred J. Pallmig, 80, of Otter Lake, was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday (January 27, 2009) at his residence. He was born May 20, 1928, in Flint, the son of Alfred and Anna (Swartz) Pallmig. Alfred was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He was employed by A.C. Spark Plug Division for 25 years. Mr. Pallmig was a Jack of all trades. He loved to cook and his special hobbies were glass blowing, woodworking crafts, hat knitting and becoming known as the "Mad Hatter". He is survived by his wife, Janet Pallmig; children, Larry (Kim) Broughman, Linda (Wayne) Vorhes, Theresa (John) Garland, Terry Broughman (special friend, Wendi), Pattie (Dan) Oberlee, Penny (Don) DeLand, Sue and Raymond Watts, Bev Counkright; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his nieces; sister-in-law, Louise Pallmig; cousin, Helga Lamb. Bernice Christine Hilliard Fostoria Bernice Christine Hilliard, 91, of Fostoria, passed away Tuesday (January 27, 2009). Bernice enjoyed canning, sewing, crafts and a bit of traveling. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles for over 60 years; cherished mother of Terry (Peggy) Hilliard of Otter Lake; loving grandmother of 12, great-grandmother of 18 and great-great-grandmother of many. Bernice was preceded in death by her sons, Bobby and Charles; daughters, Gladys and Mary Jo; sister, Hallie; brother, Buddy. Funeral services were held Saturday (January 31, 2009) at the Oxford Chapel of the Huntoon Funeral Home, 47 North Washington (M-24) in Oxford. Pastor Dave Gerber officiated. Betty M. (Collins) Smith, age 79, formerly of Mendon, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 at her home in La Grange, Ind. where she has resided the past three years. Betty was married to Carlton “Bud” Bush and they were later divorced.  Betty was married to Robert W. Smith on Nov. 13, 1971 in Angola, Ind. They resided in Coldwater before moving to Mendon. She attended St. Edward and St. Barbara Catholic Churches. Betty was a homemaker and was frequently a driver for the Amish community. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. Betty is survived by a son, Christopher Bush of Sturgis; three step-children, Robert Smith, Jr. of Coldwater, Judy Wyatt of Angola, Ind., and Christine Bradley of Union City; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters in law, Mae Collins of Thousand Palms, CA, Joan Collins of Union City, and Marian Cazier of Augusta. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bob in 2001; three brothers, Bruce, Dick, and Kenneth Collins; two sisters, Elaine MacDonald and Margaret Arbogast; a son, Eric Bush, and three daughters, Jane Rios, Carla Butchbaker, and Gayle Brubaker. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon where the Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. The funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 at St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon with Rev. Brian was an avid outdoorsman that loved four-wheeling and motorcycles. Most of all, he enjoyed hanging out with his dog Tyson, friends and family. Byron A. Gordon, 90, of Sanford, died Thursday, January 29, 2009, at Kindy Adult Foster Care. The son of the late James N. and Virginia (Crothers) Gordon was born October 6, 1918 in Harrison where he was raised and educated; graduating from Harrison High School in 1939. In 1941 he moved to Sanford and in 1946 he bought Byes Garage.  He sold Mobile gas, did auto, motorcycle and snowmobile repairs.  In the early 1970’s he bought a Yamaha dealership and received the top state seller award.  He enjoyed trap shooting and was a third place world champion.  Hunting deer, duck and pheasant was a favorite hobby until age 89.  Mr. Gordon is survived by his sons, Jeff Gordon, Brad (Debbie) Gordon and Tom (Carol) Gordon, all of Hope; daughters, Bianne (Leo) Martonosi of Holland and Peggy (Jodi) Clerc of Breckenridge; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters; and his children’s mother, Bonnie Gordon in 2001.  Funeral services will be  at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2009 from the Wilson Miller Funeral Home, 4210 N. Saginaw Rd., Midland,     with  Reverend Dr. Janet Larner of Sanford United Methodist Church officiating.  Interment will follow in Sanford Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be offered to Midland County Council on Aging for the Sanford Happy Diners. Charles J. Ellis 1922 - 2009 Charles J. "Charlie" Ellis, 86, Parkland, Fla. and formerly of Pigeon, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2009 in Parkland. He was born in Flint on March 21, 1922, the son of the late Albert and Lena (Yunker) Ellis. On June 5, 1956, he was united in marriage to Zora Rapson in Millington and she preceded him in death on January 10, 1983. He was then united in marriage to Lillian "Bea" Davis MacKenzie in Bradenton, Florida on March 2, 1984 and she preceded him in death on December 2, 2000. Charlie was a teacher, guidance counselor and bus driver at Owendale Public Schools as well as a guidance counselor at Laker High School. He was a great friend to many staff members and students. He was a Shriner, a 32nd Degree Mason and a former member of the Moose Lodge. He was also a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Pigeon. He is survived by several nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, the daughter of Beatrice McKenzie Ellis, Janet (William) Ballagh and her family. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Mary Marshall. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. Rev. John Britt, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Pigeon, officiated. Burial will take place in the springtime at the Grant Township Cemetery near Gagetown. Memorial contributions may be made to Owendale Gagetown Schools or the charity of the donor's choice. Charles M. Fields, 73, of Coldwater, died on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 at his home. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Coldwater Free Methodist Church, with Pastor Nelson Brandymore officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Quincy. Charles was born on June 8, 1935 in Detroit, to Wesley N. and Callie Mae (Marshall) Fields. He married Loretta J. (Lori) Hughes on Nov. 13, 1989 in Lansing, and she survives. Mr. Fields was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving 31 years, retiring in 1991. Charles worked at Florence Crane for 18 years, retiring in 1999, and was also in the National Guard, Coldwater Unit, 10 72nd Maintenance Co. He enjoyed playing the clarinet, having played in the Army band for many years. Charles was an avid chess player and loved to cook. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, two brothers and two sisters. In addition to his wife, Lori, Mr. Fields is survived by his children Brandon and Geoffrey Fields, both of Coldwater; four children from a previous marriage, Edward, Lawrence, Alicia and Charles; sister Lauretta of Lansing; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including a very special grandson Kevin Fields. Charles Nathan Wilkes, 79, of Hudson, passed away suddenly on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at home. He was born Oct. 18, 1929, in Frederick, Mich., the son of Gene and Mary (Swartz) Wilkes.  He retired from General Motors after 32 years of service in the Flint area. He married Della Faye Marshall on Aug. 8, 1987, in Litchfield. She survives. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and the special  memories he shared with grandchildren, Michael (Beth) Fowler, Nathan (Mayallen) Fowler, David Anthony Fowler and Latisha Fowler who lived close by while they were growing up.  He attended Life Tabernacle Church in Hillsdale.  Charles is survived by his wife, Della, five children, Donald (Marilyn) Moore of Cordova, Tenn., David (Sara) Moore of Comanchie, Texas, Christine Cole, John Moore and Olivia Wilkes all of Hudson; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and special nephew Bob (Donna) Hastings of Milicoh, Minn.  He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Bessie Wilkes and sister-in-law, Ressie Rearick.  Funeral services for Charles will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson with Brother Steven Skiba officiating. Clare Bond Metamora Clare Bond, 81, a lifetime Metamora area resident, passed away Saturday (January 24, 2009). He was born January 26, 1927, in Flint, to Kenneth and Evelyn (Smith) Bond. He married Doris Hawk on February 17, 1973 in Lapeer. Mr. Bond served his country in the United States Navy. He started his hardworking style by operating a well drilling business. That opened the door for a job at GM Truck & Bus, where he retired from after 26 years. Clare enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting and country music. She is survived by two sons; Quinn (Sherry) Jones of Carsonville and Paul Jones of Brown City, two daughters; Mrs. Janice Sheehan of Fowlerville and Mrs. Deanne (Robert) Kelly of Sandusky, fourteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, also two foster daughters; Mrs. Kathy (James) Young and Ms. Pam Matusik. Doyle was a 1934 graduate of Jonesville High School and a member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church. He was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Blue Lodge. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving during WWII. Surviving besides his wife Katie are three sons, James (Michelle) Benedict of Augusta, Ga., Frazeur (Anne) Benedict of Ocala, Fla. and Rev. Richard Benedict of Roswell, N.M.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and brother, Keith (Jean) Benedict of Evansville, Ind. EILEEN C. BAIRD CARO Eileen C. Baird, age 73, passed away Monday, January 19, 2009 at St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw, following a brief illness. Eileen was born January 21, 1935 in Sandusky, the daughter of the late Harold & Eliza (Rich) Greenlee. She met her future husband as a young girl at a neighboring cottage on Lake Huron. Eileen was united in marriage with Thomas A. Baird while on spring break from Central Michigan University on March 31, 1956 in Sandusky. Tom and Eileen moved to Caro from Midland in 1978 when they opened Baird's Clothing Store for women's wear. She was also a volunteer kindergarten teacher's aide in Caro for nine years and enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Eileen is survived by her husband of over fifty-two years, Thomas A. Baird of Caro, one daughter; Allison (Tim) Sawyer of Caro, one son; Thomas A. Baird of Traverse City, one grandson; Scott Sawyer of Caro, two sisters; Erdeen Casto, Maxine (Ford) Otis, all of Sandusky, a lifelong friend; Delores McCoy of Sandusky and many nieces and nephews. In honoring Eileen's wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or services held at the Ransford Funeral Home in Caro. She is once again in the loving arms of her husband Bob. She was born on August 13, 1935 to the late Joe and Thelma (Nehring) Haas. Her marriage to Bob Miller was July 31, 1953 in Croswell. Bob passed away May 8, 1999. Pauline was an active member of the Croswell Wesleyan Church. She worked for the Cros-Lex School District for 25 years. She is survived by three daughters; Shelley (Dan) Berry of Conyers, GA, Sheryl (Mike) Barr of Carsonville, and Susan (Pat) Green of Capac, grandchildren; Jason (Amber) Berry of Lawrenceville, GA, Joshua (Misti) Berry of Indianapolis, IN, Amy (Jason) Ferguson of Carsonville, Dana (Dave) Theut of Sandusky, Jason Barr of Sandusky, Rob Green of Madison Heights, and Zachery Green of Capac. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Heather Dotten and one grandson, Sgt. Michael Paul Hodshire. Mr. Hodshire served his country in the Army, the Air Force and the Navy Reserves. He attended many trade schools and opened his own service garage. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Edwin Paul Hodshire will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31 with Pastor Brian Colby officiating. Else Killinger 1927-2009 Else Killinger, Pigeon, 81, died Sunday, January 18, 2009 while under hospice care at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born February 20, 1927 in Birkenfeld, Germany, daughter of the late Friedrich and Margareta (Roth) Jager. She was united in marriage to Ronald E. Killinger on August 30, 1962 in Birkenfeld, Germany. Else was a member of New Salem Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. She enjoyed her flower garden and loved babysitting, especially for her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Ronald; one daughter, Nancy Killinger, Harbor Beach; three grandchildren, Justine Killinger and Lauren Dunn, both of Eastpointe and Damian Killinger, Warren; one great-granddaughter, Kamryn; four sisters, one brother and several nieces and nephews, all living in Germany. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Gretal, Emmi and Irma and one brother, Oskar Jager. Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at New Salem Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Genevieve McCain, age 96, formerly of Mendon, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at the Birch Adult Foster Care Home in Leonidas where she had resided the past six years.  She was born in Elkhart, Ind., n April 21, 1912, the daughter of Marvin and Erta (Reid) Brown.  She attended both Kalamazoo and Three Rivers schools.  Genevieve was married to Gordon McCain on March 25, 1931, in Goshen, Ind. They resided briefly in Three Rivers before moving to Mendon in 1940.  Genevieve was employed by the Mendon Company, and by the Ralph Jones and Walt Pyshko insurance agencies, all of Mendon.  She also served as the Mendon Village treasurer for many years.  Gen was a member of the National, State, and Mendon Grange #1513, and the Michigan Retired Teacher’s Association.  She was a member of the Mendon United Methodist Church and was active in the Golden Agers before moving to Leonidas. Genevieve is survived by three daughters and their spouses, Marlene and Dennis Sherman of Vicksburg, Alice and John Zinsmaster and Florence and Roger Stienbarger both of Mendon;  four grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; special friend, Marjorie Everson of Mendon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Marion Davenport of Three Rivers. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordon in 1973; three brothers, Melvin, Kenneth, and Harwood Brown; three sisters, DeVere Wilhelm, Dorothy Baker and Clarice Gregory;  three grandchildren, Alan Stienbarger, Kenneth Zinsmaster, and Kathlene Bickel; two great-grandchildren, Jeremy Walter and Jamie Zinsmaster. He was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Battle Creek, the son of Elliott and Pearl (Darring) Taylor. Harbert married Arlene Mae Garwood on June 22, 1946, in Jackson.  She survives.  He worked for Walker Muffler in Jackson for over 32 years.  He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during WW II.  Harbert was a big fan of auto racing, both as a participant and a spectator.  His favorite driver was Bill Elliott.  His other hobbies include golfing, fishing, being outdoors and watching John Wayne movies.  He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and riding around in his Cadillac with his family. Harbert is survived by his wife, Arlene; six children, Taylor “Lee” (Tammy) Elliott of Jackson, James (Mary) Elliott, Kathleen (Ted Kopp) Bunting all of Hudson, Mikel (Kim) Elliott of Hillsdale, Christine (Carl) Stoyk of Hudson, Joseph (Karin) Elliott of Osseo; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, David Dean Elliott and William Elliott; granddaughter, January Elliott and grandson, Scott Elliott.  Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29 at Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. JEAN ELSHOLZ SANDUSKY Jean Elsholz, age 84, of Sandusky, died Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan. She was born June 24, 1924 in, Australia. She is the daughter of the late William and Anne (Wedderick) Webber. Jean moved to the United States in 1946 from Australia. She was a graduate of St. Saviors Convent, and a member of St. Stevens Church in Australia. Jean married Elmer W. Elsholz on December 12, 1946 in Toledo, Ohio, he died on September 7, 2004. She worked at Yale Rubber in Sandusky for 37 years retiring July 1, 1986, and was a past member of the Sandusky Rebekah Lodge. She is survived by two sons; Robert Elsholz of Israel, Roger (Vicky) Elsholz of Sandusky, one daughter; Joan (Dennis) Bulgrien of Snover,one brother; Boyce Webber of Australia, two sisters; Joan Tanner and Iris Gillespie both of Australia, 7 grandchildren; Scott Elsholz, Jill Bulgrien, Danielle Elsholz, Jenny Bulgrien, Nathan Elsholz, Nichole Elsholz, Mike Elsholz, and 4 great grandchildren. Larry Lee Waffle, 65, of Burlington, passed away at his home Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009. He was born December 14, 1943 in Battle Creek to Carl A. and Anita Belle (Johnson) Waffle. Larry had lived in the Tekonsha and Burlington area all his life, graduating from Tekonsha High School in 1962. He married Judy (Waisner) in Potterville on Sept. 12, 1962. His favorite job was farming. He raised and showed Limousin cattle and Hampshire hogs. He worked at Eaton’s in Marshall for 30 years, retiring in 2005. He is survived by a son: Bryan Scott (LeAnn) Waffle of Coldwater, a daughter, LeAnn Waffle of Kalamazoo, Judy Waffle of Burlington; grandchildren; Courtney and Cody Waffle of Coldwater and Savanna Waffle of Kalamazoo and Burlington; brother Reid (Rose Marie) Waffle of Burlington and sister Sue (Bill) Powell of Tekonsha, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He enjoyed hunting pheasant and deer. He was a member of the Marshall Moose and the Local 220 Union. He was active with the 4-H program for many years, he belonged to the Michigan Limousin Association, the North America Limousin Foundation and the Hampshire Herdsman Association. Lucinda E. McFeeters (Cindy), 87, of Chestnut Ridge, NY,  died peacefully Jan. 15, 2009, after a brief illness.  Cindy was born at home on Dec. 31, 1921, in Putnam County, Ohio, to Bertha (Ellerbrock) Leopold and Ben Leopold.  Among her chores on the family farm, Cindy awoke early to milk cows and drove a large work horse to lift hay into the barn.  As a young woman she ran a drill press for a company that made radio condensers.  Cindy was married on May 18, 1943, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, to Floyd McFeeters, of Defiance, Ohio.  After the war they move to a farm near Jewell, Ohio, where the family grew to four children.  In 1960 the family moved to a farm between Sturgis and Centreville, Mich.  In 1976 Cindy move to LaGrange, Ind.,and then to Wolcottville, Ind., where she lived until moving to Chestnut Ridge in 1996.  Cindy was deeply moved by views of the natural world and loved to cook and share new recipes.  She loved going out with friends and visiting her sisters and brothers, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She loved to drive and travel by train and plane.  Preceding Cindy in death were her ex-husband, Floyd; her brother, Edmund Leopold; and two brothers who died in infancy.  She is survived by brothers Henry Leopold of Defiance, Winfred Leopold of Duluth, Minn.; sisters Margene Ankney, Juanita Reiman and Mary Herder, all of Defiance; her children Roger McFeeters of Raleigh, NC, Sandra Quadri of Chestnut Ridge, NY, Carolyn Bean of Kendallville, Ind., and David McFeeters of Shelburne, Vt.; and grandchildren Joshua McFeeters, Rana Quadri, Reshelle Misak, Rebecca Layman, Ryan Schuler, Benjamin McFeeters, and Elizabeth McFeeters and six great-grandchildren.  A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Ohio at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28.  A luncheon will immediately follow in the church hall.

Marian Jean Scott, formerly of Blissfield and Toledo, passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Marian was born on Oct. 6, 1926, in Toledo, the daughter of Ezra and Minnie (Tagsold) Dauel. She graduated from Blissfield High School in 1944, and was married on Nov. 19, 1949, to Norman (Bud) Scott. Marian worked for Libby Glass in Toledo, and moved from Toledo to Covina, Calif., in 1962, when Bud was named supervisor of the Libby Glass plant in Covina. Bud retired in 1984 and the couple moved to Niland, Calif. Bud preceded Marian in death in 2003. Marian was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Blissfield. She is surviving by one sister, Marcella (Ervin) Brieschke of Riga. Following Marian’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be scheduled for sometime in May. Arrangements were made with the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield.

She was born December 26, 1928 in Gagetown, daughter of the late Adam and Susanna (Petrie) Leiterman. She was united in marriage to Walter Menzel, August 18, 1951 in Bach. He preceded her in death on January 22, 1994. She then married Elmer Shope on May 6, 2007 in Kilmanagh. Marie was a devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. She enjoyed baking, cooking, biking, walking and appreciated helping others and especially loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Elmer Shope, Sebewaing; one daughter, Janet (Todd) Vandiver, Unionville; one son, Tom (Linda) Menzel, Warren; three grandchildren, Laura (Brian) Zuzga, Troy and Brad Vandiver; two great-grandchildren, Jailyn and Nikolas; four sisters, Christine (Victor) Wissner; Sebewaing, Dorothy Prichard, Sebewaing, Dolly (John) Ondrajka, Marlette and Johanna (Orville Mallory) Miklovich, Gagetown; two brothers, Max Leiterman, Bay City and James Leiterman, Sebewaing and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. The funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. The Rev. Stephen Fillion, pastor of the St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City, officiated. Burial was made in the church cemetery., Arrangements were handled by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly.

Mildred Eleanore Rautio Peters died Jan. 29, 2009. She was 94.     Mildred was born on July 8, 1914, in Lead, S.D. Her parents were Emil Rautio and Senja Berg Rautio, who had emigrated from Finland to the United States as teenagers and met in Lead. Mildred lived in Lead and attended school there until she moved with her family to Detroit, Mich. She was a graduate of Detroit Central High School and attended Suomi College in Hancock, Mich. She held jobs with J.L. Hudson’s Department Store, Maccabees Insurance Company, and Jam Handy Productions. On May 8, 1937, she married Earl J. Peters of South Bend, Ind., who had been a classmate at Central High School. She and Earl lived in Detroit, Grosse Pointe City  and Grosse Pointe Woods. They had three sons, Kenneth Earl, David Owen and Richard John. Mildred and Earl joined the Grosse Pointe Woods Presbyterian Church, where Mildred was a loyal choir member and soloist. In 1955 the Peters family moved to Adrian, Mich., where Earl was employed as sales manager for Ace Drill Company. The family joined the Adrian Presbyterian Church and Mildred sang in the choir. She also co-founded the Adrian Women’s Matinee Musical. When Earl retired in 1979, they built a home in Seneca, S.C. There they were both very active in the Seneca Presbyterian Church; Earl until his death in 1994. Mildred sang in the choir until she was 93 years old. She was the founder of the Seneca Matinee Club, a women’s civic organization. In 2007, Mildred was a sojourner at the home of her son, Richard, in Lorain, Ohio. She subsequently moved to the Towne Center in Avon Lake, Ohio, where she lived until her death. Mildred loved music, photography, gardening and sailing. She and Earl were members of Crescent Sail Yacht Club in Grosse Pointe Farms and Devils Lake Yacht Club in Manitou Beach, and they enjoyed weekends and summers at their cottage on Douglas Lake near Levering, Mich. Mildred is predeceased by her husband, Earl J. Peters; sister, Helen Taylor; and brother, Ray Rautio. She is survived by her sons, Kenneth and his wife, Ellen, of Chapin, S.C., David of Whitmore Lake, Mich., and Richard and his wife, Susan, of Lorain, Ohio. Other survivors include five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to The Crossroads Hospice, 1742 Georgetown Road, Hudson, Ohio 44236 or to the Memorial Garden Fund of the Seneca Presbyterian Church, 115 W.S. First St., Seneca, S.C. 29678. Opal will be sadly missed by her husband, John Riker, whom she married Feb. 12, 1965; three daughters, Teala (Robert) Stem of Osseo, Misty Riker of Litchfield, Rebecka (Phil) Music of Litchfield; one son, John Paul (Katrina) Riker of Litchfield; one sister, Lori (Dale) Cowan of Allen; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was also Chief Ranger of the Independent Order of Foresters for 6 years. Mr. Hubbard converted to the Catholic faith April 1998 and never missed Saturday Mass. He served as an Usher and Eucharist Minister at Holy Redeemer. Dick was also a member of Knights of Columbus Fr. Louis P. Gauthier Council #10170, Navigator 4th Degree of 0510 Assembly and Honor Guard. He loved the church and Knights of Columbus and went to every function the Knights were involved in. He is survived by his wife, Clair Johnson of Lapeer; sons, Jeremy (Brianne) Johnson of Lapeer, Joshua Johnson of Lapeer; brothers, Pat (Charlene) Johnson of Otter Lake, Tom (Melody) Johnson of Rose City; many special friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Doris (Hinken) Johnson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Timothy Johnson Memorial Fund for Prostate Cancer Research. Viola Marie Burger, age 83, of Brooklyn, passed away Jan. 29, 2009, peacefully at home, surrounded by loving family and friends. Viola was born Jan. 19, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan. On August 24, 1943, she married Clarence Burger and they celebrated 65 wonderful years of marriage. She and her husband, Clarence, for 20 years were the owners of the DoNoHop donut shop on U.S. 12. She was a loving, caring, giving person who was also a devoted Christian.  Viola was an active member of St. Joseph Shrine Catholic Church, an avid doll collector, and collector of all Pillsbury Doughboy memorabilia. Besides her husband, Clarence, she is survived by her children, Diana (Donald) Tyler and Thomas Burger; daughter in law, Nancy Burger, widow of Theodore; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters and a son, Theodore. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at St. Joseph Shrine Catholic Church, Irish Hills, with Fr. Carl Simon officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Shrine Cemetery.  Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh. WESTLEY KURT A M D 

Died January 31 at his home, he was 57 years old. Dr. Westley did both his undergraduate and doctoral studies at Wayne State University, and completed his Radiology Residency at Wm. Beaumont Hospital. He practiced Radiology for 15 years in W. Palm Beach, FL before returning back to MI in 1999 to practice. He was preceeded in death by his father Joseph L. Westley and will be lovingly remembered by his mother Betty Westley, his sister Kim Parker, niece and nephew Heidi and Eric Parker, and his ex-wife Laura Westley. It was Dr. Westley's wish that he be cremated and have a private family's cattering of his ashes.

Wells W. Beebe, age 92, of Hillsdale, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 7, 1917 in Rome Center to Charles  and Mable (Wells) Beebe. He was married April 20, 1941 in Adrian to Donna Baragar and she survives. Wells was a 1935 graduate of Adrian High School and was the former owner of Hillsdale Cartage Company. He was a member of College Baptist Church and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was an avid deer hunter and ice fisherman. Surviving besides his wife, Donna are a son, Bill Beebe of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Sharon (John) Flowers of Crystal Falls, Mich.; two brothers, Weldon (Alice) Beebe and Donald (Evelyn) Beebe both of Adrian; and a grandson, Jake Flowers of Seward, Alaska. Wells was preceded in death by his parents, twin daughters, Katherine and Shirley, and a brother Wayne. Funeral services for Wells W. Beebe will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Jason Mekelburg officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale.
