SERUM - Herbert Einar Serum, Jr. died peacefully in his sleep on the evening of February 10, 2009, at his home in Lake Isabella, Michigan. Herbert was born on June 22, 1917, in Oak Park, Illinois, the son of Herbert E. Serum, Sr. and Nancy Sigrid Gulbrandsen Serum. He moved to Hudsonville, Michigan, with his family in 1929, and graduated from Hudsonville High School in 1936. He married Kathleen Mae Kehres in Elkhart, Indiana, in 1938. Shortly after their marriage, they moved together to Hudsonville where they raised their family. Kathleen pre-deceased him on July 18 of 2001. He is survived by sons, Robert (Camella) Serum of Midland, MI, James (Marilyn) Serum of West Chester, PA, and daughters, Nancy (Michael) Phillips of Lake Isabella, MI, and Mary Kathleen Marchese of Coto De Caza, CA. Brother-in-law, Joseph Elenbaas, also pre-deceased him. In 1945, Mr. Serum assumed management of the Standard Oil Agency in Hudsonville, building it into the largest agency in Michigan before his retirement. His customers and friends knew him as "Bud" Serum. He served for sixteen years on the Hudsonville Board of Education, and was also a charter member of the Hudsonville Lion's Club and served as President of the Hudsonville Chamber of Commerce. He played a prominent role in the creation of "Lilac Lane" on the stretch of M-21 on both sides of the city of Hudsonville. Herbert retired early from the Standard Oil Company and he and Kathleen moved to Lake Isabella, near Weidman. He was subsequently asked to manage the Lake Isabella Property Owners Association and did so for several years before "retiring" a second time. During that period, he also served on the Isabella County Planning Commission and as President of the Chippewa Hills Board of Education, where a number of his grandchildren were enrolled. Later, and for a number of years, Herbert and Kathleen split their time between Lake Isabella and Mount Dora, Florida, before moving permanently back to Michigan in 1998. In keeping with Herbert's wishes, cremation has taken place, so there will not be a visitation period. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 13, at the Clark Family Funeral Chapel, 114 South Bradley, Mt. Pleasant, with The Rev. Nancy Casey-Fulton officiating. IN LOVING MEMORY OF James M. Racknor 11/11/47 - 01/11/09 A month of tomorrows has started without you, and we still find our eyes filled with tears. We know a angel called your name and took you up above. God saw you getting tired and full of pain with tearful eyes we watched you suffer then fade away. We didn't want to lose you, but we knew relief was not to be. God closed your tired eyes now emptiness and memories must take the place of you. We all miss you. Your wife, kids and grand kids. |
