Frederick Herman Carl Minster, 96, of Manitou Beach and Grand Court, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. Born Jan. 29, 1913, in Wellsville, Lenawee County, Mich., to Albert G. and Minnie F. (Ehlert) Minster. Fred was graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1931. He was an entrepreneur from an early age, caddying at the Lenawee Hills Golf Course, delivering ice to households, Madison Schools bus driver, carrying water to the workers constructing U.S. 223 from Adrian to Rome Center, and delivering oil for Burton Oil Company located at Madison Center. In the early 1950s he and Charlie Baron purchased the Baron Minster car sales on South Main Street in Adrian. Fred sold cars until the partnership dissolved with Fred Minster moving his family to Devils Lake, Manitou Beach, where he owned the Minster Boat Sales. Fred was always in search of new adventures in business when he and Vaughn Mingus created the Geneva Boat Company at Hudson, Mich., where fiberglass fish tanks, fiberglass speed boats and pontoons were manufactured. As owner and sales representative, Fred traveled to much of the southern Midwest selling and delivering fish tanks, pontoons and boats. Minster RV Park which he and Leta had purchased in 1938 on Round Lake became his refuge and entertainment in later years. He enjoyed relaxing, thinking, playing cards and reminiscing about what a wonderful life and family God had given him. Fred loved learning about and sharing the Minster family history. Fred married Leta (Yeutter) Minster on Friday, Oct. 13, 1937, in Adrian. Their daughters are Margretha (Lloyd) Harden of Hudson, Mich., and Lucretia (Roger) Rutan of Brooklyn, Mich. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Wesley Harden, Waldron, Mich.; Margery (David) Mabus, Marshall, Mich.; Levi Yoakum, Josh Yoakum, Rhonda (Pete) Benfant, Cody and Austin Benfant, Brooklyn, Mich.; Rod (Kristin) Rutan, Kedzie and Conner Rutan, Ida, Mich. Others who Fred cherished include sister-in-law, Bernice Minster, friend, Eunice Bailey, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding Fred were his parents, his wife, Leta in 2000; his brothers, Martin Minster and Elmer Minster, in infancy, and his sister, Helena Adams. Fred was a member of the Cadmus Presbyterian Church and the Rome Grange, #293 (1952). At church, he served on the session, on many committees and was an elder. He and Leta entertained many foreign exchange visitors through the Rome Grange Agricultural Program (1960s) and through educational programs. Countries represented were Brazil, Italy, Africa, China, Laos and Iran. In 1972 Fred and Leta sponsored the Chansamone family from Laos during the communist invasion of that area. The seven Chansamone children continue to call Fred “Grandpa.” Fred was a Department of Social Service volunteer for many years during which time he drove clients to their doctor appointments. The celebration of Fred’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home with his nephew, Jim Yeutter, officiating. Burial will follow at East Rome Cemetery. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m.  You may also sign the register book or send condolences at www.wagleyfuneralhome.com. Letter to the editor: A little sacrifice for 911

Friday, February 20, 2009 10:06 PM - Dena E. Foulk

To the editor: In today’s economy I can understand why citizens would be concerned about “another” $1.05 leaving their household per month. It is a small amount, but when you add it to the rest of the bills, that most people do not have enough to pay, it can seem overwhelming. In my opinion, however, the focus needs to be taken off the money, and we need to take a look at what will happen in our community without a Central 911 dispatch center. Since 911 was established, most of the emergency service providers in our area have eliminated their dispatch capabilities. So if we close Central Dispatch, any emergency called in would have to be handled by telephone. That means individual calls to Fire Department, Police and Ambulance Service (each service has its own separate phone number). It also means that each service would need to update to some sort of dispatch or call notification to notify each other, or tone out the department with the location of the fire, police or medical emergency. The cost of doing this, will far outweigh the “extra” $1.05 per month. Most people cannot comprehend an emergency happening to them, but, if your child was choking, or your house was on fire, in the panic of that moment could you remember the correct number that you should call to get help? It will not be as simple as “9-1-1”. Would your child know what number to dial in case of your being incapacitated? Even if you knew the number in your area, what happens if you are visiting friends in another township and something happens there? Would you be able to find the correct number to contact the help that is needed? These are the things that I think should be considered, as well as the small cost involved. I, for one, will gladly forgo one cup of coffee a month to have this service provided to my family, friends, and loved ones.

Letters to the Editor: Please support 911

Friday, February 20, 2009 10:04 PM - Richarle L. Simpson Gier

To the editor, On behalf of “Citizens to Continue 911” service, I would like to encourage everyone to vote Yes/911 on Feb 24. Speaking from experience of needing to call 911 several times in the past year for my mother — this is a vital service I would not like to see compromised in this county. Not only for my family, but for all Hillsdale County Residents. This is a vital, necessary service we need to maintain in Hillsdale County — one that is coordinated through a consolidated central dispatch system, and one that is ready to respond at a moment’s notice when you or a loved one are in a crisis or emergency situation. It is such a blessing to know that when you need help — all you have to do is dial that three-digit number, “9-1-1,” and there will be an immediate response on the other end of the line, along with quick action. Also, I cannot say enough for the Reading Emergency Service. Their staff and ambulance drivers are a true asset to  this community, and their compassion and professionalism has not gone unnoticed. Please vote Yes/911, for a small monthly fee — we can all have piece of mind, knowing that help is available when we need it.
