Andy Waldfogel, 46, of Morenci passed away Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at home. He was born on July 7, 1962, in Morenci, the son of Donald and Ila (Bender) Waldfogel. Andy was a graduate of Morenci High School then attended Northwest State Community College for several years. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1981 through 1983 and then joined the National Guard and served until 2001. He worked for Frozen Speciality in Archbold for 20 years until he had to retire due to health problems. Survivors include his mother, Ila (Curtis) Kime of Morenci; his father, Donald (Garnet) Waldfogel of Wauseon, Ohio; significant other, Rosemary Herron of Morenci; two sons, Joseph Waldfogel of Wauseon and Justin Waldfogel of Archbold, Ohio; Rosemary's grandson, Austin Burgen of McClure, Ohio; two sisters, Diane (Mike) Hickok of Morenci and Patricia Waldfogel of Morenci; and two brothers, Jack Waldfogel of Wauseon and Kenneth Waldfogel of Seneca. Andy was preceded in death by one brother, Donald, in infancy. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci with the Rev. Richard Burstall officiating. There will be a visitation on Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m.   |
SWANDER, Anne L. Of Portage Passed away February 21, 2009 at home. She was born September 19, 1934 in Bellaire, MI, to the late Arthur and Iva (Crandall) Trumble. Anne was united in marriage to Robert Swander, who preceded her in death in January of 2007. They were together for 53 years. Anne loved bowling, travelling, her flowers, lighthouses, waterfalls and her kids. She loved animals and nature and especially her little Yorkie, Beegee. She always took care of her family first, and was always there for them. Surviving Anne are her children, Robin Anne (Kirk) Staller of Battle Creek, Richard (Connie Kosick) Swander of Portage and Ron Swander of Portage; grandchildren, Matthew, Kyle, Fred, Chad and Katelyn; a sister, Kathleen (Duane) Laubach; a brother, Paul (Cathy) Trumble; a sister-in-law, Marsha Burgstahler; a daughter-in-law, Dawn Swander; her good friend, Wilma Tays and her many friends in Okeechobee, Florida and at the lake house in Homer, MI; and several nieces and nephews. Also preceding her in death were a son, Robert E. Swander, Jr; brothers, Frederick and James Trumble; sister, Marion Gregory. No visitation is scheduled. Billy E. Butcher, 76, of Camden, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at the Community Health Center of Branch County following a long illness. Born Aug. 4, 1932 in West Hamlin, W. Va., he was the son of Charles and Mary (Mullins) Butcher. Billy was a journeyman painter for General Motors Corporation, retiring after 32 years of employment. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart with three clusters, Combat Infantrymen Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal with four bronze service stars, and Army of Occupation Medal with German Clasp. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Billy served 10 years as a Cub Scout Leader for Den 745 in Livonia, was a volunteer Santa Claus for the Head Start program, and enjoyed hunting. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Shirley (Knechtel), whom he married July 7, 1956; two sons, Bruce (Oleta) Butcher of Chardon, Ohio, Billy D. (Sarah) Butcher of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one daughter, Tammy Sylvester of Reading; two sisters, Virginia Tomblin, Tilda Bolin both of West Hamlin, W. Va.; grandchildren, Megan, Molly, Eli (Jamie), Sarah, Scott (Chelsea), Becky (Ray); and three great-grandchildren who were the love of his life, Brody, Cloey and Daisy. Preceding him in death to welcome him home were his parents, two sisters and eight brothers. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor Don Harkey officiating. Visitation is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. Friday. Brandon  Lee Gordon ,“Gordie #22,” 16, of DeWitt, Mich., died, Sunday, Feb.  22, 2009, at DeVos Hospital in Grand Rapids.  Brandon laced up and skated his way to heaven to that giant ice rink up above.  He was born December 22, 1992 in Lansing.  Brandon is survived by his mother, Julie Gordon (Williams); his father, Dana; a sister, Marissa; his grandparents, Don and Barbara Gordon of Nottawa and Don and Marilyn Williams of Lansing; and an enormous amount of loving aunts, uncles, cousins and very special friends.  Brandon was involved in football throughout his youth in DeWitt.  His true passion was the game of hockey.  Hockey families all over the continent played a tremendous role in supportingBrandon throughout his cancer journey, especially the MSU Spartan hockey family.  His love off-ice was spending time at Sandy Pines Camping Resort.  The two-year battle with Osteosarcoma involving numerous surgeries and endless chemo treatments never stopped him from living life to the fullest.  His family is grateful to all his doctors and nurses that took such great care of him.  His motto has always been and always will be “stay strong and do it.”  Everyone that was blessed to know Brandon was inspired and touched by his zest for life, courage, strength, charisma and ability to always smile.  Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. today at Catholic Community of St. Jude’s in DeWitt.  A memorial celebration will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Munn Ice Arena on the MSU campus.  In honor of Brandon, please wear your “Brandon’s Defense” T-shirts or your Spartan apparel to his celebration of his inspiring life.  Those desiring may make contributions to the Brandon Gordon Fund, Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, P.O. Charles R. Hawkins III, 57, of Gilead Township, passed away on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009 at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo following an injury. He was born on Dec. 6, 1951 to Charles R. (Bob) Hawkins II and Rita (Jensen) Hawkins in Muskegon. He grew up in Coldwater and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1970.  Earning a degree in Criminal Justice from Kellogg Community College, Charlie began working as a deputy for the Branch County Sheriff’s Department in the early 1970s. He changed careers in 1975 and became a salesman for the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Group in Coldwater. His work was important to him and he took great pride in building positive business relationships, especially in the Hillsdale and Sturgis service areas. He retired from Pepsi in 2005 after thirty years. In his free time, Charlie enjoyed photography, classic car shows, watching baseball and traveling the world. He was an avid reader and as a long-time cancer survivor was admired for his strength and courage. Most importantly, he was a family-oriented man who was dedicated to supporting his loved ones in their endeavors.  Charlie is survived by his wife, Svetlana Hawkins, who he married on April 12, 2000, in Fremont, Ind. He is also survived by his son Bryan (Kelly) Hawkins of Torch Lake, brother Mark Hawkins of Coldwater and sister Dr. Suzanne Hawkins of Holland. He was preceded in death by his father in 1995 and his mother in 2003. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at the Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor Phil Palmer officiating. A gathering of friends and family will begin at 12 noon at the funeral home prior to the service on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be directed to the National Kidney Foundation. Clara H. Losinski, age 89, of Bronson, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Heartland Health Care in Three Rivers. Clara was born Dec. 4, 1919, in Bronson, daughter of Steve and Agnes (Czajkowski) Klavinski and was a lifelong Bronson area resident. She married Alby Losinski on Oct. 1, 1938, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Bronson. Alby died Feb. 25, 1994. Clara was a lifelong member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson and a member of the Rosary Society and Sacred Heart Society. She retired in 1981 from Doerr Products in Burr Oak where she had worked for many years. Prior employment was at the former LA Darling Company and former Bronson Reel Company. She was also an active farm wife, and loved gardening, fishing cooking, crochet and playing cards. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Phillip Rzepka and Nancy and Larry Yerrick, all of Bronson; her son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Vickie Losinski of Sherwood; five grandchildren; three step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her sisters, Alberta Malovey, Adelia Kubasiak, Geraldine Albright and Alice Ratkowski all of Bronson; her brother David Klavinski of Coldwater and two sisters-in-law, Norma Klavinski and Martha Klavinski both of Coldwater.  She was preceded in death by her husband Alby; her parents; and two brothers, Stanley Klavinski and Floyd Klavinski. The Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Clara H. Losinski will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. GARRATT, Frank B. Age 89 Of Richland Went home to be with his Lord on February 17, 2009. Frank was born on November 22, 1919 to H. Cal and C. Alene Garratt. He served the Eaton Corp. for over 32 years as a tool and die maker. In 1953, he married Betty Poe, who died in 1983. They were loving parents to Frank Bartrum Garratt, Jr. (Maria) of Ft. Lauderdale area, Janet (Alan) DeBoer of Richland, David (Diane) Garratt of Chicago, and Nancy (Kurt) VanderVeen of Richland; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren were blessed to join that affectionate kinship. A brother, John, preceded him in death, and brothers Bill and Don, of Battle Creek, will miss their friend and bowling companion. Three nieces and four nephews also survive. The US Army awarded Mr. Garratt six Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead during his service in World War II. He will be remembered as a generous friend and talented handyman who blessed family and friends alike, performing countless mechanical, plumbing, electrical and carpentry labors of love. Frank was a long-time, and dedicated member of Yorkville Community Church, which will host his memorial service on Sunday, March 1 at 2 PM. Gloria May Elliott, age 77, of Adrian died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at Toledo Hospital. She was born Oct. 15, 1931, in Fairfield Township, Mich., to George H. and Bertha P. (Jennings) Edwards. On July 1, 1949, she married Robert Elliott at the Fairfield Baptist Church. He preceded her in death. Gloria was a very active member of the Elem3nt Church.  She enjoyed and was involved at all the activities at the Riverview Terrace Highrise. Gloria is survived by five children, Robin Oram of Sand Creek, Diane Brown of Tecumseh, Georgia Hogan of Jacksonville, N.C., Jane Ligrani and her husband, Luke, of Redington Beach, Fla., and Kevin Elliott and his wife, Manerva, of Arvada, Colo.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, and her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley, and a sister, Betty Franke. At Gloria’s request cremation has taken place. Jan (Colombo) Swart, age 58, of Holland, a woman filled with faith and love, died Saturday, February 21, 2009, at home with her family after a painful battle with cancer.  She is survived by her father, Eugene Colombo, and husband, Dr. Edward Swart, of Holland; children Paul and Rachelle Swart of Novi and Rev. Mark Swart of New Jersey; beloved granddaughter, Ashlyn Rose Swart; and sister, Nancy and Bob Plocinik of Livonia.  She is also survived by in-laws Marilyn and John English of Washington, Robert and Johanna Swart of Washington, DC, Ginny and Greg Purcell of Indiana, Carol TenEyck and Jim Idema and John and JoAnn Lieffers Swart of Grand Rapids and 11 nieces and nephews.   Jan was born in Detroit, daughter of Eugene and Eleanor (Gora) Colombo, and attended St. Anselm’s Elementary and Mercy High School in metro Detroit.  She attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she obtained a degree in Political Science and met her husband, with whom she shared 361⁄2 loving years of faithful marriage.  She worked before having children at Catholic Charities of Washtenaw County, Michigan, and Cook County, Illinois, and for the last ten years at Herrick District Library, where she already is missed by staff and patrons.  She was a faithful follower and Booster Club representative of Holland High athletics when her sons were involved.  She was a Eucharistic minister and lector at St. Francis de Sales Church in Holland.   Visitation will be at St. Francis de Sales Church, 171 West 13th St., Holland, Monday, Feb. 23, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 24, at 11:00 a.m., at the church. Jo Ann Cooney, age 86 of Centreville, Mich., passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born in Bluffton, Ohio on June 15, 1922, a daughter of Ralph and Gwendolyn (Troxel) Patterson. Jo Ann graduated from high school in Bluffton, in 1940. On April 2, 1944, she married Robert Cooney, Jr. in Bluffton.  He preceded her in death on July 2, 2002. Jo Ann worked at the ASCS Office, Ranglers and the flower shop all in Centreville. Jo Ann and Bob also owned and operated the  Chubby Dairy Bar in Centreville and were caretakers of the Kirsch Guest House in Sturgis. Jo Ann belonged to the Lions’ Club Auxiliary and the Centreville United Methodist Church. She was an avid bowler, and loved fishing and feeding hummingbirds. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed. Surviving Jo Ann are; daughters, Janeen Hall of Sturgis, Colleen (Sammy) Goins of White House, Tenn.; son Robert Cooney, III of Centreville; sister,  Betty Clark of Milford, Ohio; sister-in-law, Harriett Snow, Kansas City, Mo.;  grandchildren, Daneen Birkey, Minnesota, Donald (Babette) Buel, Sturgis, Amy Smith, Sturgis, Erik (Brandy) Goins, Gallatin, Tenn., Erin Goins, White House, Tenn.; great grandchildren, Zachary Alwine, Avial McClain, Autumn Birkey, Adam Birkey, Maggi Bishop, Beo Bishop; great great grandchild, Avah Mott, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and a great-grandson. LaVerge Catherine Clement, age 91, of Britton died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tenn. She was born Feb. 21, 1917, in Antwerp, Ohio, to Henry and Amelia (Schantz) Mueller. She married Bernard Clifford Clement. He preceded her in death. LaVerge, along with her husband, ran the Clement Turkey Farm in Britton, where they produced turkeys for the holidays for many years. LaVerge played an integral part in the hatching, raising and dressing of these animals. Many local folks were hired to assist in getting these birds to market. The farm was homesteaded by LaVerge’s in-laws, Paul and Zeta Clement. The Clements also raised grass crops such as wheat, oats and barley, and other times sugar beets, tomatoes and soybeans. LaVerge is survived by two sons, James Clement of Adrian, Bernard “Dean” Clement of Crossville, Tenn.; one daughter, Lois Ann Brown of Taveres, Fla.; two brothers, Oliver Mueller of Adrian and Roft Mueller of Deerfield; six sisters, Rose Long of Blissfield, Valerie Cross of Seattle, Wash., Rita Woods of Deerfield, Carol Bishop of  Ottawa Lake, Arlene Mueller of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Bonnie Sassak of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Lou Witt Koth; three brothers, Walter, Frances and Leslie Mueller; and a sister, Janet Mueller. “A special thanks goes out to Hospice of Cumberland County for all the care and compassion they have shown to us and our mother.” The Funeral Liturgy for LaVerge will be held on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Deerfield with Father Jack Loughran as celebrant. To the editor: In today’s economy I can understand why citizens would be concerned about “another” $1.05 leaving their household per month. It is a small amount, but when you add it to the rest of the bills, that most people do not have enough to pay, it can seem overwhelming. In my opinion, however, the focus needs to be taken off the money, and we need to take a look at what will happen in our community without a Central 911 dispatch center. Since 911 was established, most of the emergency service providers in our area have eliminated their dispatch capabilities. So if we close Central Dispatch, any emergency called in would have to be handled by telephone. That means individual calls to Fire Department, Police and Ambulance Service (each service has its own separate phone number). It also means that each service would need to update to some sort of dispatch or call notification to notify each other, or tone out the department with the location of the fire, police or medical emergency. The cost of doing this, will far outweigh the “extra” $1.05 per month. Most people cannot comprehend an emergency happening to them, but, if your child was choking, or your house was on fire, in the panic of that moment could you remember the correct number that you should call to get help? It will not be as simple as “9-1-1”. Would your child know what number to dial in case of your being incapacitated? Even if you knew the number in your area, what happens if you are visiting friends in another township and something happens there? Would you be able to find the correct number to contact the help that is needed? These are the things that I think should be considered, as well as the small cost involved. I, for one, will gladly forgo one cup of coffee a month to have this service provided to my family, friends, and loved ones. |

To the editor, On behalf of “Citizens to Continue 911” service, I would like to encourage everyone to vote Yes/911 on Feb 24. Speaking from experience of needing to call 911 several times in the past year for my mother — this is a vital service I would not like to see compromised in this county. Not only for my family, but for all Hillsdale County Residents. This is a vital, necessary service we need to maintain in Hillsdale County — one that is coordinated through a consolidated central dispatch system, and one that is ready to respond at a moment’s notice when you or a loved one are in a crisis or emergency situation. It is such a blessing to know that when you need help — all you have to do is dial that three-digit number, “9-1-1,” and there will be an immediate response on the other end of the line, along with quick action. Also, I cannot say enough for the Reading Emergency Service. Their staff and ambulance drivers are a true asset to  this community, and their compassion and professionalism has not gone unnoticed. Please vote Yes/911, for a small monthly fee — we can all have piece of mind, knowing that help is available when we need it. |

Lily Anne Shirley Lancaster, of Fennville, died on February 20, 2009, from complications related to leukemia. Lily is survived by her husband, John; her sons, Jason, Matthew and David; daughters- in-law, Amanda (Paley) and  Brooke (Pillifant); grandsons, Magnus and Leif; brother, Gerald Steinke of Otsego; sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth (Wasz); brother-in-law, Bruce; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents, Herman and Alvina Steinke; and sister-in-law, Joyce Steinke. She was born Lily Steinke in Winnipeg, Canada, on November 27, 1943 to Herman and Alvina Steinke. Lily graduated from Portage Central High School in 1961 and Western Michigan University in 1965, and was married on October 2, 1970. Lily taught at Fennville Public Schools for more than 15 years, most spent as a second grade teacher at Anna Michen Elementary. Her former students were always called "her kids". She was also a dedicated member of the United Methodist Churches of Fennville and Pearl. Second only to her love for her family was her love for her community. Whether singing with the church choir, selling hotdogs at Rocket Football games, taking a morning walk with her bulldogs, serving as an EMT for the Fennville Ambulance Service, or sponsoring Fennville Odyssey of the Mind teams, Lily absorbed, cherished and reflected each moment. She gave all of her heart to her community, and she knew that the community had responded in kind, giving of its heart to her. We will miss her. The family extends a special thank you to the doctors and staff at the University of Michigan and to Uncle Jerry for giving us more than three additional years with my wife, our mother, our oma. The visitation will be Tuesday, February 24 from 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at Chappell Funeral Home in Fennville. Mrs. Lois M. Heykoop died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 19, 2009. Lois was born April 21, 1917 in Muskegon Heights, Mich., a daughter of Jack and Alice (Lapham) Cassidy. She had been a Sturgis resident since 1955, coming from Muskegon. She was employed with Ross Laboratories for 25 years, retiring in 1981. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph Heykoop, on July 14, 1964; and a twin brother, Louis Cassidy. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. Phyllis J. Harvey age 79, of Mesick, and formerly of Colon, passed away Feb. 21, 2009, at the home of her daughter, Connie Schwartz, in Colon.  Phyllis was born Oct. 13, 1929, in Battle Creek, a daughter to the late Burr B. and Lena Mae (Parks) Eberhard.  Phyllis grew up in Colon graduating from Colon High School with the Class of 1947.  She lived in Colon until 1985 when she moved up north to Mesick.  On Feb. 2, 1947, she married Howard Harvey in Centreville.  Phyllis was a homemaker and had been employed at the former Paramount Furniture Co. and former Kirsch Co. both in Sturgis and also at the Colmer Co. in Colon.  Phyllis enjoyed the out of doors, gardening, mushrooming, and enjoyed feeding the deer and birds.  She is survived by her husband, Howard Harvey of Mesick; two daughters, Connie Schwartz and special friend Ed Snyder and Kathy Shotko and husband Ron of Colon; son, Mike Harvey and wife Sue of Athens; daughter-in-law, Judy Harvey of Sherwood; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Eberhard of Brentwood, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond L. Harvey; and a grandson, Raymond L. Harvey II; and three brothers, Max, Richard and Clifford Eberhard.  The family will receive relatives and friends from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Phyllis J. Raymond "Jim" Jacobs Lapeer Raymond "Jim" Jacobs, 40, of Lapeer, passed away Tuesday (February 17, 2009). He was born July 13, 1968, in Flint, to Raymond and Janet (Ward) Jacobs. He married Jan Vincent on May 18, 1991 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lapeer. Jim graduated from Flint Powers High School in 1987. He was an area manager, overseeing six homes for the developmentally disabled. Jim-Ray was an active member of the Lapeer HOGS. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lapeer. His children, his family, his friends and his motorcycle were his life. Jim had a deep faith in God - he prayed every night. Richard D. Rose Aug. 16, 1934 — Feb. 19, 2009 Richard D. Rose, 74, of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.  He was born Aug. 16, 1934, in Angola, Ind., the son of Oliver and Nellie (Bunker) Rose.  Richard graduated from Angola High School and worked for Moore Business Forms.  Following retirement, he worked as a custodian at Reading High School.  He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict.  His hobbies included antique tractors and engines, woodworking, camping, animals and the out-of-doors.  He belonged to the Yesterday and Today Threshing Club and was also a sports enthusiast. Survivors include his wife, Mary (Lower) Rose, whom he married April 9, 1960; one daughter, Laura (Charles) Blanchard, Coldwater; two sons, Michael (Tamera) Rose, Hillsdale and David (Pamela) Rose, Reading; one sister, Mary Roberts, Angola, Ind.; one brother, Ned Rose, Florida; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. His parents, three sisters and three brothers preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Western Michigan University and Detroit University as well as Officer Candidate School. He retired from Ameritech as a Contract Administrator. He also was employed as a Network Engineer. Before becoming a Network Engineer, he served as Lieutentant J-G in the U.S. Navy between 1954 and 1956. Thomas worked with the youth in Hartland, MI as a Boy Scout Committee Chairman. Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline; ten children, Kappe', Roseanne, Patricia, Christine, Thomas Jr., Mary, Pierre, Paula, Monique and Cynthia. VIRGINIA R. HERONEMUS DECKER Virginia R. Heronemus, age 88, life resident of Decker, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Hernando Hospice Care Center in Brooksville, Florida. She was born July 14, 1920 in Decker, daughter to the late John and Rachel (Hook) Marsh. She attended the Moshier School. She married Norman Heronemus July 3, 1939 in Lamotte Twp. He preceded her in death October 1, 1992. Virginia was a long time member of the Shabbona United Methodist Church. She worked for Walbro s Corporation in Cass City for 27 years, retiring in 1982. She is survived by one son; Gerald (Jacqueline) Heronemus of Decker, one daughter; Sharon (Richard) Zielesch of Spring Hill, Florida, one brother; Maurice Marsh of Lapeer, 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers; Kenneth, Oscar, Junior and Keith and four sisters; Emily Mae, Hazel, Olive and Marjorie. Funeral services were held at the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette with Pastor Ellen Burns and Pastor Dale Turner officiating. Interment was in the Moshier Cemetery in Hemans. Viola B. Upston, 95, of Tekonsha, passed away at Oaklawn Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009. She was born Jan. 27, 1914 in Butler Township, the daughter of Christ and Lena Wendorf. She attended school at the Moore School on Moore Road in Branch County. She married Howard Upston in 1932. Viola was a housewife, living most of her life in Tekonsha. After losing her husband, she raised her children by doing several jobs including laundry for the former Tekonsha 4 Leaf Clover Motel, custodian for the Tekonsha Schools and driving the school bus. Viola and her daughter, Rolene, owned Vi-lene Ceramic Shop. She was a former member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. as her husband was a WWI veteran. She was a former member of the ladies Pedro Club in Tekonsha. Her hobbies included crocheting, sewing and ceramics. Viola is survived by daughters Rolene Rann and Debra Taylor, both of Tekonsha; sons Howard J. (Madilyn) Upston and Clarence (JoEllen) Upston, both of Tekonsha and Tom (Gail) Upston of Sawyer; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and many loving great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1953, daughter Betty Cummins in 2007, granddaughter Sherry Ankney and sons-in-laws William Cummins and Jerry Rann. Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Putnam’s of Tekonsha. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Union Church United Church of Christ with Rev. Barbara Pryor officiating. Wilberta A. “Bertie” Beaubien, 70, of Hudson passed away Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at home. She was born June 23, 1938, in North Adams to Marion and Ellen (Kunkle) Cooley. She was a member of the Antique Tractor Club, enjoyed playing cards, gardening, flowers and fishing. On June 23, 1980, she married Leon Beaubien, and he survives in Hudson. Also surviving are two daughters, Vicky (Carl) Sito of Stryker, Ohio, and Cheryl (Tim) Ballmer of Fayette, Ohio; two sons, Jeff (Shelly) Honeycutt of Columbus, Ohio, and Leonard (Nancy) Beaubien of Hudson; one sister, Pat Weindel of Woodville, Ohio; one brother, Mike (Helena) Brown of Florida; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, David Honeycutt.  Visitation is scheduled for 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb.26, at the Cambria Baptist Church, 2772 Lilac Road, Hillsdale. William A. Miller Jr. Nov. 21, 1933 — Feb. 19, 2009 William A. (Bill) Miller, Jr., age 75 of Litchfield, went home to meet his precious Saviour on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009.  He was born on Nov. 21, 1933 in Erie, Pa., to William A. Miller, Sr., and Martha Ann (Waite) Miller. He served at the Norfolk Naval Air Station, where he was an airman and aviator machinist mate.  While there he played in the ship's band.  He was transferred to Annapolis where he played in the Navy Band, and served as a flight engineer. He was discharged with a Good Conduct Medal and the Korean Service Medal.  In 2007 he was inducted into the Michigan Veteran's Hall of Fame and was also honored with the Nick Smith Military Person of the Year Award. He worked for 27 years as the manager of McCall's Home Center.  He was extremely active in his community, serving as a member and past President of the Rotary Club.  He was on the board and past president for the Hillsdale chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and also served on the board of his home church, Hillsdale Assembly of God.  Bill was a member of the American Legion, the North Adams Review Board and the Litchfield Planning Commission. His love of music spanned his entire life.  His skill on the saxophone, accordion and organ was all self-taught and brought much joy to many people, as he played in local churches around the county.  He also was a member of the “Big Band Machine” for a number of years, along with the Branch County Community Band. Bill's many interests included flying, boating, playing games, building and remodeling homes, horse pulling and he was an avid water skier. He loved his family and will be greatly missed.  He is survived by his wife Donna S. (Marshall) Miller, whom he married on Nov. 11, 1989.  He had five children:  Cheryl (Tony) Estel, of Hillsdale, William (Jan) Miller, III of Erie, Pa., Jeffrey (Mary) Miller of Erie, Pa., Lisa (Harold) Jones of Hillsdale and Peggy  (Andrew “Andy”) Curran of Hillsdale.  He had 2 step-sons:  Timothy (Sandiy) Ward of Middleville and Douglas Davis of North Adams.  He is survived by 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be  Sunday at the Van Horn Eagle funeral home in Hillsdale, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.  Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hillsdale Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Dennis Harrar officiating.  Dinner will follow. William D. “Yoder” Isaac, age 53, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at the Sturgis Hospital Emergency Room. He was born Dec. 15, 1955, in Sturgis, a son to Patricia Eberhard. William was adopted and raised by his grandparents Harold and Thelma Isaac and has been a resident of Sturgis most of his life. On Nov. 1, 1975, in Sturgis, he married Toby Sybesma. William was currently employed by Ross Laboratories Division of Abbott Laboratories where he had worked for many years. He had previously been employed at Bristol Valley Foods, Sturgis Carton (Americraft Carton), and Montgomery Ward. William enjoyed working in the yard, bowling, fishing, racing, karaoke, and spending time with family and friends, especially his grandson Logan, who knew him as “Pappa,” and his stepgrandchildren. He was a fan of the Detroit Tigers baseball team and the Detroit Lions football team and he enjoyed listening to country music, The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Eagles. Surviving are his loving wife of 33 years, Toby; a daughter, Melissa (John) Delarye of Sturgis; grandson, Logan; grandmother, Thelma Isaac; three stepgrandchildren, Taylor, Sarah, and Jarrett Delarye of Sturgis; several stepbrothers and stepsisters. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harold Isaac in 2004; daughter, Kristy Lee Isaac in 2000; mother, Patricia Sparck, and stepbrother, John Sparck. The family will receive friends and relatives from 2– 4 and 6–8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes, Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091. Funeral services celebrating the life of William D.“Yoder” Isaac will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A graveside committal service will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
