LUCKE, Anne M. Of Kalamazoo Passed away January 31, 2009 at home. She was born May 27, 1918 in Flint, Michigan to the late William and Dorothy (Wakefield) Emerton. She was married to Robert Lucke who preceded her in death in October of 1997. Anne was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star, employed by General Motors Corporation for a time and was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Anne enjoyed life and had many interests, among them she loved her gardens, playing golf at Gull lake Country Club, walking on the beach, water skiing, singing and dancing. Surviving Anne are her children, Fran (Ted) Little of Kalamazoo, Kathy (David) Stimpson of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Joel (Jennifer) Weisman, Andy (Shelley) Weisman, Ann-Marie Stimpson; great-grandchildren, Kylar, Paris, Kohl, Avery and Emmery; brother, Robert (Connie) Emerton; cousin, Pat Fergusen; many nieces and nephews. BRENDA MARIE HOUTHOOFD SANDUSKY Brenda Marie Houthoofd, age 51, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 30, 2009 following a one-year illness. She was born May 14, 1957 in Pigeon, Michigan, daughter of Wilmer and Helen (Vollmer) Nimtz. Brenda was a 1975 graduate of Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School. Brenda and Evan Houthoofd were united in marriage on December 11, 1976 in Sebewaing. She had been employed at the Pizza Hut Restaurant in Sandusky for 24 years before coming ill. She was a member of Life Song Church of Snover. She enjoyed crafting, cooking, gardening and loved her many animals, as well as was happiest when serving others. She was known fondly by her mother as "Sweet Pea!" Surviving are her husband, Evan of Sandusky, parents; Wilmer and Helen Numtz of Sebewaing, two sisters; Peggy (Duane) Scharich of Unionville, Lori (Rocky) Joles of Sebewaing, two brothers; Tom (Michelle) Numtz, Michael (Laura) Numtz, all of Sebewaing, special nieces; Melissa Carpenterand Heather Joles, as well as other nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. The funeral service was held at the Dinkle-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing with Pastor Mike Smith officiating. Burial was at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sebewaing. Berdena Vanden Bosch, 86, of Zeeland, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, February 2, 2009. Berdena was born December 5, 1922, in Sioux Center, Iowa, to Hermanus and Johanna Ten Harmsel.  Berdena later married Hilbert Vanden Bosch, and they raised four children together in Zeeland. She was a charter member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church and served on the Ladies' Aid Society.  Berdena was preceded in death by her husband, Hilbert, in 2003; and by her great-grandson, Jakob Vanden Bosch, in 2008. She is survived by her children, Rose and John Van Haitsma of Holland, James and Maria Vanden Bosch of Grand Rapids, Shirley and Calvin Van Heukelem of Denver, and Susan and Michael Nave of Kalamazoo; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; her sister: Hermina and Leonard Sytsma; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Marinus Pott, Arlene Ten Harmsel, Harriet and Don Jager, Myrtle Lamer, and Arloa Blauwkamp;  many nieces and nephews. Her children and grandchildren are grateful for her natural graciousness, her deep love for friends and family, and her constant spirit of happiness and contentment. Betty H. Heilig 1925-2009 Betty Helen Heilig, 83, Harbor Beach and formerly of Minden City, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Saint Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw. Betty was born on April 25, 1925 in Brown City. She married Raymond John Heilig on June 7, 1949 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1986. She and her husband lived and farmed in the Minden City area for all of their married lives before moving to Harbor Beach. Betty attended the Del Mar Beauty School in Detroit, graduating as a licensed beautician. She owned Betty's Beauty Shop and was a beautician for 40 years in the Minden City area and Harbor Beach. She was a parishioner of Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Ruth where she was a lifelong member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Christian Mothers. She was currently a parishioner at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. Over the years she enjoyed gardening, crafts, sewing and was unbeatable at euchre and rummy. She loved taking trips to northern Michigan. Betty was a very loving mother and grandmother, always putting others first. She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. She is survived by three children, Raymond (Glenda) Heilig, Sandusky, Susan Heilig, Harbor Beach and Marjorie Moorehead, Midland; three grandsons, James, Scott and David Heilig and three great grandsons, Jordon, Andrew and Avery Heilig. She was preceded in death by one brother, Edwin Bootz and one sister, Kathryn Sloan. Funeral mass was held on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. Betty M. (Collins) Smith, age 79, formerly of Mendon, Mich., died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at her home in La Grange, Ind., where she resided the past three years. She was born Aug. 27, 1929, in Lansing, Mich., a daughter of Fred and Grace (Walker) Collins, and later graduated from Union City High School.  Betty was married to Carlton “Bud” Bush, and they were later divorced.  On Nov. 13, 1971, Betty married Robert W. Smith  in Angola, Ind.  They resided in Coldwater before moving to Mendon.  Here she attended St. Edward and St. Barbara Catholic churches.  Betty was a homemaker and was frequently a driver for the Amish community. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. Betty is survived by a son, Christopher Bush of Sturgis; three stepchildren, Robert Smith Jr. of Coldwater, Judy Wyatt of Angola, Ind., and Christine Bradley of Union City; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mae Collins of Thousand Palms, Calif., Joan Collins of Union City, and Marian Cazier of Augusta.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob in 2001; three brothers, Bruce, Dick, and Kenneth Collins; two sisters, Elaine MacDonald and Margaret Arbogast; a son, Eric Bush; and three daughters, Jane Rios, Carla Butchbaker, and Gayle Brubaker. The family will receive friends from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon where the rosary will be recited at 5 p.m.   The funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday,  at St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon with Rev. Beverly Ann King, age 50, of Somerset passed away on Jan. 31, 2009, at her home. She was born on Dec. 11, 1958 in Deols, Indre, France, to George and Ida (Gaspar) Lamb. She married Carl F. King, Jr. on Aug. 13, 1983, in Norfolk, Va., and he survives. Beverly was raised in Livermore, Calif., then she lived in New York and then in France. She lived in the Somerset area since 1986.  She graduated from Granada High School in Livermore, Calif., in 1976. She served in the United States Navy from 1981-1985, and was one of the first women to be put on a Naval ship. She was a member of St. Mary On The Lake Catholic Church in Manitou Beach. She enjoyed sewing and crafts. Surviving, besides her husband, Carl, are three sons, Justin D. King, Greg A. King of Somerset, Bill L. King of Sun Valley, Calif.; one daughter, Brittany N. King of Somerset; her mother, Ida Lamb of Livermore, Calif.; two brothers, George Lamb of Livermore, Calif., Larry Lamb of Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Mary Feldman of China, Calif., her father- and mother-in-law, Carl F. and Shirley King, Sr. of Harrison, Mich.; nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, George Lamb, and one brother, Michael Lamb. Boris Burkovskis, 92, of Coldwater passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 at his home. He was born July 2, 1916 in Peterhof, Russia to Vladimir and Olga Burkovskis. He graduated from high school in Riga, Latvia and continued his education at the University of Riga receiving a degree in Agronomy in 1941. He was a veteran of the Latvian Army serving during WWII and fighting against Communist Russia. He married Ruth Kraulis in Germany in 1947. She preceded him in death in 1997. He came with his family to the United States in 1949 and made Coldwater his home. Boris was a member of the Elks Club for over 50 years and served as their organist for 42 years. He loved music and played in many local dance bands. He was a member of the Eastern Orthodox Church and a Scout Master for many years. He is survived by his children; Michael (Dariece) Burkovskis of Chicago and Ieva Kallis of Okemos. Visitation will take place Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 at the Putnam Funeral Home. Charles Nathan Wilkes, 79, of Hudson, passed away suddenly on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at home. He was born Oct. 18, 1929, in Frederick, Mich., the son of Gene and Mary (Swartz) Wilkes.  He retired from General Motors after 32 years of service in the Flint area. He married Della Faye Marshall on Aug. 8, 1987, in Litchfield. She survives. David F. Seurynck 1952-2009 David F. Seurynck, 56, Alberta, Ala., formerly of Gagetown, passed away January 23, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Cass City on February 18, 1952, the son of Ila and the late Leo Seurynck. Dave was a dear friend to all who knew him. He enjoyed sports and hanging out with his buddies. After he left farming, he had a career in construction and spent several years living and working in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Currently he was living in Alberta, Ala., where he was self-employed. His death brings great sadness to his family and to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed. He was formerly an advertising executive, an apartment manager, and an artist. Delores was united in marriage on February 14, 1947, to William J Koetje, who survives. She was a member of Milwood Christian Reformed Church. Doyle J. Benedict, 91, of Hillsdale and former longtime Jonesville resident, passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Country Living in Hillsdale.  He was born June 12, 1917 in Leroy, Mich. to Rev. Milton and Grace (Rohr Fairchild) Benedict. Doyle was married Sept. 7, 1941 to Katie Frazeur and she survives. Doyle was a 1934 graduate of Jonesville High School and a member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church. He was a member and Past Master of the Masonic Blue Lodge. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving during WWII. Surviving besides his wife Katie are three sons, James (Michelle) Benedict of Augusta, Ga., Frazeur (Anne) Benedict of Ocala, Fla. and Rev. Richard Benedict of Roswell, N.M.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and brother, Keith (Jean) Benedict of Evansville, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Karolyn Kay and Janie Elizabeth and three brothers, Earl, Dr. Herbert and Ellis. Funeral services for Doyle Benedict will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jonesville United Methodist Church with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. She is the daughter of the late Edwin and Rosanna (Richards) Hill. Edna married Donald Nicholas Vatter on March 5, 1932 in Snover. He passed away July 17, 1982. Edna was a member of the Countryside Free Methodist Church. She was a nurses aide for many years at the Sandusky Hospital. She lived with and was lovingly cared for by Tom and Nancy Miller of Brown City for eight and one half years. She is survived by three daughters; Jeanette McLeish of North Carolina, Ruth Ann (Harry) Walker of Sandusky, Karen (Don) Innes of North Carolina, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by six sisters; Mary Clark, Lila Padden, Ada Waun, Jennie Armstead, Myrtle Kramp, and Carrie Snell, four brothers; Walter, Orville, Clark and Milo Hill, one son-in-law, Earl McLeish. Edlah Rose Stiles, 91, of Sturgis, formerly of Coldwater, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 at the Sturgis Hospital. She was born Aug. 19, 1917 in Marengo Township to Vern C. and Marion (Densmore) Lincoln. Edlah came to Coldwater in 1930. She married Guy A. Stiles on Sept. 2, 1936 in Angola, Ind. He preceded her in death June 14, 1987. She was employed at the Community Health Center in the Housekeeping Department, retiring in 1979 after 13 years. Mrs. Stiles was a member and Secretary of the National Housekeeping Association and Chairperson and Vice President of the Ways and Means, and a former member of the Coldwater Eagles. She had also worked at the Quincy Dairy Bar for ten years. She is survived by daughters Esther (Walter) Olmsted of Sturgis and Marjorie R. Stiles of Charleston, S.C.; sons Robert A. (Karen) Stiles of Sturgis and Guy L. (Gene) Stiles of Middleberry, Ind.; 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Guy A. Stiles, her parents, two sisters, daughter Elizabeth Jean Wise and great grandchild Jamie Ditmars. Edlah enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, baking and cooking, especially her famous beef and noodles. Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater. He was born Jan. 24, 1932, in Middletown, Ohio, to Edwin and Hazel (Forrest) Hodshire. On Oct. 15, 1960, he married Phyllis (Justice) Hodshire and she survives. He is also survived by seven children, Edwin (Kelly), David, Paula (John) Parney, Scott (Sally), Mark (Amy), Heidi and Jeremiah; 12 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; one brother, Bruce Hodshire of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Heather Dotten and one grandson, Sgt. Michael Paul Hodshire. Mr. Hodshire served his country in the Army, the Air Force and the Navy Reserves. He attended many trade schools and opened his own service garage. He was born on August 3, 1920 in Parisville to the late Alois and Lucy (Kucharczyk) Susalla. Elmer and Susan Warchuck were united in marriage in Ubly, on April 26, 1940. She preceded him in death on September 28, 2002. Elmer retired from Circle Engineering in Sterling Heights, working as a Tool & Die grinder. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church of Helena. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Elmer also attended Al's Restaurant with his lunch group for many years. After his long career as President of Greensboro Lumber Company, he wrote several short stories and several novels. Tom was a servant of God, going on mission trips and serving in his church. He will be greatly missed. A service is planned for 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday February 3, 2009 at the New City Fellowship Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. |

Harbert Taylor Elliott Aug. 18, 1924 — Jan. 25, 2009 Harbert Taylor Elliott, 84, of Hudson, formerly of Jackson, passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at Heartland Health Care Center in Jackson. He was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Battle Creek, the son of Elliott and Pearl (Darring) Taylor. Harbert married Arlene Mae Garwood on June 22, 1946, in Jackson.  She survives.  He worked for Walker Muffler in Jackson for over 32 years.  He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during WW II.  Harbert was a big fan of auto racing, both as a participant and a spectator.  His favorite driver was Bill Elliott.  His other hobbies include golfing, fishing, being outdoors and watching John Wayne movies.  He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and riding around in his Cadillac with his family. Harbert is survived by his wife, Arlene; six children, Taylor “Lee” (Tammy) Elliott of Jackson, James (Mary) Elliott, Kathleen (Ted Kopp) Bunting all of Hudson, Mikel (Kim) Elliott of Hillsdale, Christine (Carl) Stoyk of Hudson, Joseph (Karin) Elliott of Osseo; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, David Dean Elliott and William Elliott; granddaughter, January Elliott and grandson, Scott Elliott.  Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29 at Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. Helen Jane (Topps) Leppien 1925-2009 Helen Jane (Topps) Leppien, 83, Chandler, Ariz. went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 21, 2009. She was born on January 28, 1925, in Clare, daughter of Anna (Gamble) and Charles Topps. Helen was raised in Saginaw, Michigan where she graduated from Arthur Hill High School. On March 16, 1945 she was united in marriage to Karl J. Leppien, her junior high sweetheart. They were married for 63 years and together they raised two children. Helen worked as a bookkeeper and homemaker. Helen and Karl moved from Saginaw to Pigeon in 1957 where they resided until moving to Alma in 1979. In 1992, Karl retired and they moved to Arizona to be closer to their children and grandchildren. She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Saginaw, Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon, Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mesa, Ariz. and Sun Lakes United Methodist Church in Arizona. She was also active in the Pigeon Women's Club and loved to support and entertain young people. She is survived by her husband, Karl, Chandler, Ariz.; daughter, Marianne Leppien-Oleson, Chandler, Ariz.; son, Raymond (Kelly) Leppien, Tempe, Ariz.; granddaughters, Jennifer Oleson, Chandler, Ariz. and (Anna) Clarisse Leppien, Tempe, Ariz.; grandsons, Parker Leppien, Columbia, Missouri and David Oleson II, Las Vegas, Nev. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters. Irene T. Hool 1925-2009 Irene T. Hool, 83, Bad Axe, formerly of Tallahassee, Fla., passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at her home in Bad Axe, while under hospice care. She was born March 8, 1925 on the family farm near Owendale, daughter of the late Nicholas and Catherine (Welther) Tabar. She was valedictorian of the Owendale-Gagetown High School class of 1943. Irene was employed in Detroit offices of Fisher Body Div. of GM working on the P-75 and B-29 airplanes. She was married to Howard C. Hool by Rev. Bernthal at Epiphany Lutheran Church, Highland Park on January 26, 1946. They shared over 55 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on May 28, 2001. Irene was also employed for years with the State of Michigan, MESC offices in Bay City and Caro. She and Howard owned and operated numerous business enterprises together. They owned North Grove Inn, Caro; Wagon Wheel Inn, Kinde; Fisher & Hool Construction Co., Kinde; Rite Way Construction Inc. and HP Construction Co. Inc., Treasure Island, Fla.; the Carousel Motel, Redington Beach, Fla.; Windjammer Motel, Treasurer Island, Fla. and various rental properties in Madiera Beach, Fla.. She also was a Florida licensed real estate broker and owned and operated Lai Rene Realty Inc, Gulfport, Fla. As a licensed pilot she and Howard spent many hours flying their airplane to Las Vegas, California, Canada and between Bad Axe and Florida. In 1976 they visited her father's birthplace in Hatzfeld, Austria-Hungary and maternal grandparents' birthplace in Transylvania. Their retirement years were spent between Madiera Beach, Fla. and Caseville. She finally returned to Michigan in 2004. She enjoyed reading and playing cards. She joined the Duplicate Bridge Clubs in Tallahassee, becoming a member of American Contract Bridge League and earning a number of master points. She enjoyed playing with the bridge players in the Thumb. She is survived by two loving daughters, Lynette Hahn and special friend, Robert Prange Sr., Bad Axe and Loretta (Abe) Alexander, Tallahassee, Fla,; two granddaughters, Sherri Hahn and special friend, Kevin Desjarlais, Westland and Kimberly (James) Yaroch, Sebewaing; two great-granddaughters, Kayla Yaroch, Bad Axe and Chambray Yaroch, Sebewaing; one sister, Esther Gartner, Warren; two brothers, Ralph Tabar, Owendale and Harold (Theresa) Tabar, Ocala, Fla. and numerous brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Howard Hahn; brother, Lon Tabar; two sisters-in-law, Mamie Tabar and Dorothy Tabar; brothers-in-law, Victor Gartner, Kenneth, Lawrence and Floyd Hool; sister-in-law, Evelyn Borodychuk; ex-son-in-law, William Hahn . BOURASSA (DEWITT), JANET MARIE - Of Hayes Township, passed away unexpectedly, at home on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Janet was born on November 9, 1948, in Angola, Indiana, to Russell and Jeane (Fraser) DeWitt. After graduating from St. Francis Xavier High School, she attended North Central Michigan College and the Hackley School of Nursing, eventually earning her degree and becoming a Registered Nurse. On April 12, 1980, Janet married Michael Bourassa in Midland and together they have shared 28 wonderful years. She was the kind of person who always put the needs of others before her own. Her bright infectious smile, warm demeanor and wonderful sense of humor helped her to make friends easily and to quickly win over the trust of patients under her care. These are only a few of the qualities that made her a wonderful Nurse and endeared her to so many during her nearly 30 years of nursing that included Mercy Hospital (Jackson), Mid Michigan Medical (Midland) and a majority of her career at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital. Her husband, Mike will so miss those simple things they enjoyed together; long walks on warm summer days, sharing a beautiful Northern Michigan sunset and good times spent with great friends and family. She was a kind soul and she will be missed. Lucinda E. McFeeters (Cindy), 87, of Chestnut Ridge, NY,  died peacefully Jan. 15, 2009, after a brief illness.  Cindy was born at home on Dec. 31, 1921, in Putnam County, Ohio, to Bertha (Ellerbrock) Leopold and Ben Leopold.  Among her chores on the family farm, Cindy awoke early to milk cows and drove a large work horse to lift hay into the barn.  As a young woman she ran a drill press for a company that made radio condensers.  Cindy was married on May 18, 1943, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, to Floyd McFeeters, of Defiance, Ohio.  After the war they move to a farm near Jewell, Ohio, where the family grew to four children.  In 1960 the family moved to a farm between Sturgis and Centreville, Mich.  In 1976 Cindy move to LaGrange, Ind.,and then to Wolcottville, Ind., where she lived until moving to Chestnut Ridge in 1996.  Cindy was deeply moved by views of the natural world and loved to cook and share new recipes.  She loved going out with friends and visiting her sisters and brothers, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She loved to drive and travel by train and plane.  Preceding Cindy in death were her ex-husband, Floyd; her brother, Edmund Leopold; and two brothers who died in infancy.  She is survived by brothers Henry Leopold of Defiance, Winfred Leopold of Duluth, Minn.; sisters Margene Ankney, Juanita Reiman and Mary Herder, all of Defiance; her children Roger McFeeters of Raleigh, NC, Sandra Quadri of Chestnut Ridge, NY, Carolyn Bean of Kendallville, Ind., and David McFeeters of Shelburne, Vt.; and grandchildren Joshua McFeeters, Rana Quadri, Reshelle Misak, Rebecca Layman, Ryan Schuler, Benjamin McFeeters, and Elizabeth McFeeters and six great-grandchildren.  A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Ohio at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28.  A luncheon will immediately follow in the church hall.   |

She was born August 29, 1923 in Palms, Michigan the daughter of the late Edwin and Ella (McLeod) Dillon. She was a lifelong area resident, a 1942 Graduate of Minden City High School and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Port Sanilac. Mary married Frank G. Smith on May 15, 1943 in Carsonville, he died on September 17, 2001. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1987 after 36 yrs. of service, working at the Sandusky and Carsonville offices and served as Postmaster at Applegate. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. The funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. The Rev. Marymargaret entered her heavenly home, Monday night, February 2, 2009.  Marymargaret was born December 17, 1930 in Tiffin, Ohio, a daughter of Bernard and Elizabeth (Stuart) Proxmire.  She graduated with an R.N. degree from Bronson Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1953.  That same year, she married her husband of 55 years, Kenneth R. Warren, Jr., who survives.  Prior to her retirement, Marymargaret worked at Bronson Hospital and the Simpson Paper Company. She and her husband, along with their four children, served as missionaries in the Middle East for the Reformed Church in America, from 1965 to 1970.  She was a member of Trinity Reformed Church and the Bronson School of Nursing Alumni Association.  Also surviving are four children, Richard (Gail) Warren of Portage, Robin Lee of Portage, Kenneth Christopher (Robin) Warren  of Holland and David (Michelle) Warren of Portage; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph (Betty) Proxmire of Indian Lake, MI, and Deming, NM, James (Lenore) Proxmire of Kalamazoo and John (Connie) Proxmire of Port St. Lucie, FL; several cousins, nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Janet (Proxmire) Peterson.  Memorial services will be on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the Trinity Reformed Church, 326 W. Cork St. with Rev. Don De Young officiating.  The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Mildred Eleanore Rautio Peters died Jan. 29, 2009. She was 94.     Mildred was born on July 8, 1914, in Lead, S.D. Her parents were Emil Rautio and Senja Berg Rautio, who had emigrated from Finland to the United States as teenagers and met in Lead. Mildred lived in Lead and attended school there until she moved with her family to Detroit, Mich. She was a graduate of Detroit Central High School and attended Suomi College in Hancock, Mich. She held jobs with J.L. Hudson’s Department Store, Maccabees Insurance Company, and Jam Handy Productions. On May 8, 1937, she married Earl J. Peters of South Bend, Ind., who had been a classmate at Central High School. She and Earl lived in Detroit, Grosse Pointe City  and Grosse Pointe Woods. They had three sons, Kenneth Earl, David Owen and Richard John. Mildred and Earl joined the Grosse Pointe Woods Presbyterian Church, where Mildred was a loyal choir member and soloist. In 1955 the Peters family moved to Adrian, Mich., where Earl was employed as sales manager for Ace Drill Company. The family joined the Adrian Presbyterian Church and Mildred sang in the choir. She also co-founded the Adrian Women’s Matinee Musical. When Earl retired in 1979, they built a home in Seneca, S.C. There they were both very active in the Seneca Presbyterian Church; Earl until his death in 1994. Mildred sang in the choir until she was 93 years old. She was the founder of the Seneca Matinee Club, a women’s civic organization. In 2007, Mildred was a sojourner at the home of her son, Richard, in Lorain, Ohio. She subsequently moved to the Towne Center in Avon Lake, Ohio, where she lived until her death. Mildred loved music, photography, gardening and sailing. She and Earl were members of Crescent Sail Yacht Club in Grosse Pointe Farms and Devils Lake Yacht Club in Manitou Beach, and they enjoyed weekends and summers at their cottage on Douglas Lake near Levering, Mich. Mildred is predeceased by her husband, Earl J. Peters; sister, Helen Taylor; and brother, Ray Rautio. She is survived by her sons, Kenneth and his wife, Ellen, of Chapin, S.C., David of Whitmore Lake, Mich., and Richard and his wife, Susan, of Lorain, Ohio. Other survivors include five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A graveside service for family and friends will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to The Crossroads Hospice, 1742 Georgetown Road, Hudson, Ohio 44236 or to the Memorial Garden Fund of the Seneca Presbyterian Church, 115 W.S. First St., Seneca, S.C. 29678. Nancy has been a resident of Hillsdale since 1980 and she was a former volunteer for the Health Department for many years. Opal was a dedicated homemaker and loved canning, crocheting, handcrafts and corresponding with her numerous pen pals. She will be remembered by many area children as a wonderful baby-sitter. JoAnn was previously married to Larry Ryan and for the last 10 years enjoyed Len Baranski's companionship. After JoAnn retired from First Federal Savings and Loan, she summered in Michigan and wintered on Galveston, Texas. JoAnn enjoyed dancing, traveling, playing cards with her friends, attending St. Anne's Episcopal Church (MI) and volunteering at the Marine Corp League (TX) Events. Surviving relatives include sons Eric (and Janet) and James (and Lori); her three grandchildren; Emily, Gabby and Noah, sister and brother; Caroline and John, sister-in-law; Franny and family, cousins; Debbie, Tom, Diane and Kevin, and the Baranski family. Robert "Bob" Le Roy Demerly Brown City Robert "Bob" Le Roy Demerly, 78, of Brown City for 5 years (formerly of Lapeer) passed away Saturday (January 31, 2009). He was born October 25, 1930, in Benzonia, Mich., to Jake and Lottie (Richter) Demerly. He married Harriett Leigh Delaney on January 27, 1951 in Lapeer. Rev. Hemmingway officiated the ceremony. Bob served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1950 and later in the reserves. He was a U.S. Postal carrier for 25 years, retiring November 2, 1990. Bob worked all 25 years out of the Lapeer Post Office. For the past few years, Bob delivered prescriptions for Memphis Drugs - a job that he enjoyed very much. Robert J.(Bob) Miller, age 89, of Burr Oak, passed away, Sunday, Feb. l, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis, after several months of failing health.  Bob was born Aug. 3, 1919, in Three Rivers, a son of the late Kirby and Verna (Replogle) Miller.  Bob grew up in Three Rivers, moving to Burr Oak after his marriage in 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Grimes from June of 1944 to January of 1946, during World War II.  On June 8, 1941, he married Norma R. Baldwin in Burr Oak. She preceded him in death on Feb.17, 2008. Bob had owned and operated the former Miller’s Grocery Store in Burr Oak from 1942 to 1986, when it closed. He had been an active member of the  Burr Oak Fire Department for over 60 years.  Early in life he had played fast pitch softball, was an avid bowler, had been a member of the Burr Oak Board of education for over 20 years, where he had served as president.  He is survived by daughter, Sandy (Allen) Hoopingarner of Burr Oak; a son, Wayne (Karen) Miller of Union City; five grandchildren, Scott (Laurie) Gotshall of Las Vegas, Nev., Jan (Tod) Schipper of Colon, Rob (Kem) Hoopingarner of Vicksburg, Steve (Jaymie) Miller of Wyoming and Matt Miller of Burlington; four great-grandchildren, Tyler and Megan Schipper and Regan and Peyton Hoopingarner; and several nieces and nephews.  Bob was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Virginia Miller; three brothers, Paul (Spud), Clarence (Hap) and Ray Miller; and five sisters. Gladys Ward, Eilleene Katz, Eunice Tessin, Helen Hughey and Doris Withers. The family will receive relatives and friends 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Schipper Funeral Home in Colon. Funeral Services celebrating the life of Robert J. Miller will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Pastor Karen Nachtigall of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Union City officiating.  Burial will follow at South Colon Cemetery, with Military Honors conferred by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.   If desired, the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Bob to the Burr Oak Community Foundation. |

Ruth Puffer, age 93, of Mason died Feb. 1, 2009. She was born March 19, 1915, in Holloway, the daughter of Ted and Lena (Pocklington) LaBounty. On Dec. 24, 1936, she married Ray Puffer in Tecumseh. He preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1997. Ruth was a graduate of County Normal and Eastern Michigan University. She retired from the Tecumseh Public Schools in 1980.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mason and a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh. Ruth was a member of Chapter AJ-PEO and Mason Woman’s Club. In addition to her husband Ray, she was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, Mary, and sister, June Pichler. She is survived by two children, Dr. Raymond L. (Kathleen) Puffer of Victorville, Calif., and Miriam (Robert) Sybrandy of Lansing; four grandchildren, Ted and Faith Anne Puffer and Thomas Sybrandy   and Sarah (Mark) Genovese; sister, Ellen (Clif) Stitt of Jackson, and two brothers, Raymond LaBounty of Townsend, Tenn., and Donald LaBounty of Ellenton, Fla. Sister Marie Rachel Forster, died on Jan. 30, 2009, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 93 years of age and in the 74th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister Marie Rachel was born in Detroit, Mich., to Joseph and Julianne (Grohman) Forster. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian, Mich., and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Latin from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Mich., and a Master of Arts Degree in Latin from DePaul University in Chicago, Ill. Sister spent 47 years ministering in education in Detroit, Berkley, and Royal Oak, Mich.; Chicago and Harvey, Ill.; Winslow, Ariz.; and Nassau, Bahamas. She ministered at the Wing Lake Development Center in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., for three years as a Foster Grandparent. She was a Library Aide at the Royal Oak Library for one year, and Outreach Aide at the Royal Oak Senior Community Center for two years. For more than 10 years, she has belonged to a group that has met (at the home of her good friend Lorretta Lambaugh) the 13th of the month to pray the Rosary.  She prayed the Rosary of the Devine Chaplet at her home daily. She also belonged to the Red Hat Society. Born on August 10, 1958 in Detroit to Louis Hudson and his wife, Kathleen (nee Weaver). He was adopted into the family of God by the washing of holy baptism on December 10, 1969. John was an avid student all of his life. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Oak Park and Birmingham. He received a B.A. in German and Religion from Oberlin College in 1979, an M. Div. from the seminary program at Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Ind. in 1984, an M.A. in classical languages from Loyola University in 1996 and a Doctor of Theology Degree from the University of Zululand in South Africa in 2008. After his graduation from the seminary in 1984, he served as Pastor at UCC Congregational and Baptist churches in Ohio and Illinois. For confessional reasons, he applied for and was accepted by colloquy into the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod in 2001. As part of the colloquy process, he attended a semester at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wis. and also served as vicar/pastoral assistant at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wis. and at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Livonia. In 2002, the Lord called him to serve as pastor of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hartford, where he served faithfully for the rest of his days. On Tuesday, January 27, 2009, the Lord in his wisdom and love took the soul of Pastor Weaver-Hudson from this vale of tears to himself in heaven. He is survived by his parents. His time on earth was 50 years, 5 months and 17 days. The Christian funeral service to honor Pastor Weaver-Hudson's life will take place at 1 p.m.; Monday, February 2 at the Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, 205 Bennett Avenue, Hartford. Pastor Paul S. Naumann will serve as officiant. His remains will be interred at Grandlawn Cemetery in Detroit, where they wait for the sure and certain resurrection to eternal life in Christ. Wells W. Beebe, age 92, of Hillsdale, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 7, 1917 in Rome Center to Charles  and Mable (Wells) Beebe. He was married April 20, 1941 in Adrian to Donna Baragar and she survives. Wells was a 1935 graduate of Adrian High School and was the former owner of Hillsdale Cartage Company. He was a member of College Baptist Church and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was an avid deer hunter and ice fisherman. Surviving besides his wife, Donna are a son, Bill Beebe of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Sharon (John) Flowers of Crystal Falls, Mich.; two brothers, Weldon (Alice) Beebe and Donald (Evelyn) Beebe both of Adrian; and a grandson, Jake Flowers of Seward, Alaska. Wells was preceded in death by his parents, twin daughters, Katherine and Shirley, and a brother Wayne. Funeral services for Wells W. Beebe will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Jason Mekelburg officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale. She was President of the Detroit Area Sigma Kappa Alumni Association for several terms which lead to leadership positions and multiple terms as President of the Detroit Area Panhellenic Society. During her life in St Clair Shores Marilyn was active with the Jaycees. Funeral from Lutheran Church of the Shepherd King, 5300 West Maple Rd., West Bloomfield (at Middlebelt Rd.) Friday 11 a.m. (In state 10 a.m). Interment Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia. Friends may visit Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 340 N.
