ARTHUR EUGENE GARLICK MARLETTE Arthur Eugene Garlick, age 74, of Marlette, died Thursday, February 12, 2009 at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. He was born June 15, 1934 in Ann Arbor, Michigan the son of the late Arthur and Phyllis (Jackson) Garlick. He moved to this area in 1951 from Pontiac and was a 1952 graduate of Marlette High School and served in the U.S. Army. Arthur married Marilyn Innes on November 2, 1957 at the Marlette First Presbyterian Church. He worked for 31 years at Pontiac Motors retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Thumb Steelheaders Association and served on the board of Sanilac Re-cycling Center. Arthur (Gene) enjoyed fishing, furniture refinishing and spending time with his family, especially his two granddaughters. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, one son; Jeffrey (Shelley) Garlick of New York, one daughter; Julie (Bill) Ross of Goodrich, one sister; Mary (Ken) Wahl of Tennessee, two granddaughters; Heather Jo & Stefanie, one step grandson; Bob Mowry and one step granddaughter; Richelle Mowry. Funeral services were held at Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette with Pastor Chris Wolfe officiating. Cremation followed services at the Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. Bette Jean Williamson, age 83, of Tecumseh passed away Feb. 15, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center, Adrian. Bette was born Dec. 31, 1925, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Leno and Dorothy (Fallis) Purkey. In May of 1946 she married Robert Williamson in Tecumseh. She was a graduate of Tecumseh High School. Bette was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. For most of her life she was a legal secretary for Tecumseh city attorneys. Bette was a long-time member of the Tecumseh First Presbyterian Church. He was born March 13, 1925, in Flint, to Clarence and Ethel (Gath) Skellenger. He married Gurneth Townsend on June 28, 1945 in Washington, D.C. Mr. Skellenger proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1980 from GM Truck & Coach as a machine repairman. Bill was a member of the Metamora Lions Club and Metamora Fire Department. He loved his garden, hunting, fishing and, in more recent years, bowling. It was a joy for Bill to have his grandchildren around. She enjoyed her work in real estate and attending her kids sporting events and activities. DALE BISSETT BROWN CITY Dale Bissett, age 77, of Brown City, passed away February 15, 2009 at his home in his own bed. He was born January 25, 1932 near Bad Axe to Albert and Ella (Maud) Bissett. Dale was a decorated veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War. He retired from Ford Motor Company after 30 years. During his retirement he enjoyed spending winters in Florida and spending time with his whole family. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their sporting events. She was born June 16, 1982, in Hillsdale, the daughter of Gary and Theresa (Ruede) Truitt. Duane L. Jarratt Sr., age 76‚ of Centreville, passed away Feb. 15, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born in Three Rivers on April 4, 1932, a son of Claude and Clara Mae (DeVoe) Jarratt. Duane graduated form Three Rivers High School in 1950. On Feb. 25, 1951, he married Janet Breece in Three Rivers. Duane was employed as a ring coil set up operator at Peterson Spring in Three Rivers from 1975 to 1994. He previously worked at the Scamper Trailer factory in Bristol, Ind. Duane loved boating, model airplanes, computers and Citizen Band Radio with the handle Bulldog. Duane also worked with the sheriff’s department in civil defense and storm watching. Surviving are his wife, Janet Jarratt, of Centreville; daughters, Sylvia (Gary) Clouse of Sturgis and Bonnie Jo (Jeff) Hershberger of Sturgis; sons, Duane Jarratt Jr., of Parchment and Keith (Cody) Jarratt of Constantine; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters Leona Mae Huber of LaGrange, Ind., Joyce Ward of Clove, Ark., Janet Boyce of Three Rivers and Jewel Jarratt of Tucson, Ariz.; and one brother, Carl Jarratt of Baton Rouge, La. She was born June 19, 1929 in Detroit, daughter to the late Raymond and Stella (Brooks) Mayrand. She married Archie Powell. He preceded her in death in 1963. She then married William Pratt who died 1985. Evelyn was a member of the Clifford Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She also was a long time member of the Marlette V.F.W. She worked as a cook for Ruth's Restaurant in Marlette and Beagio s in Kingston. He is survived by five sons; Virgil Mayrand of Louisiana, Edward (Patricia) Powell of Vassar, Larry (Kelly) Goyea of Britton, Michigan, James Bates of Dryden, Leonard Powell of New York, three daughters; Violet (Charles) Hodder of Deford, Evelyn Fagan of Marlette, Eleanor (Randall) Dykes of Marlette, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Elizabeth “Lizzy” Messenger, age 87 of Adrian passed away Feb. 16, 2009 at Allegiance Health in Jackson.  Elizabeth was born on Nov. 6, 1921, in Poland, Pa. the daughter of Stephen and Hermina (Kovach) Lucas. She married Robert W. Messenger Sr., on Sept. 28, 1941 and he preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 1971. She enjoyed being a part of her family’s life, whatever activity they were involved in.    Elizabeth is survived by her children, Robert, Jr. (Georgiana), Roger (Beverly), Elizabeth “Libby” (Ronnie) Wilson; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.  Besides her husband, Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, John, Joe and Steve Lucas and Mary Sbardella, Helen Combs, Orline Hughes, and Hermina Bosley.  Memorial donations may be given to Day Break Adult Day Care.  Envelopes will be available at the Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Braun Chapel where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday. She graduated from Albion High School in 1953, where she was a member of the Glee Club. Evelyn had worked at Tekonsha Engineering for many years, retiring in 2002. She was a member of Lockwood Community Church and enjoyed traveling, cooking and sewing. She devoted her life to her family and children. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Howard, grandson Joshua Case and great aunt Rita Juckett. Evelyn M. Rothney, age 85‚ Centreville, passed away Wednesday, Feb, 18, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born in Petoskey, Mich., on April 3, 1923, the daughter of Arthur and Hilda (Krusell) Ludlow. Evelyn graduated from Petoskey High School in 1941. She continued her studies in home economics at Michigan State University from 1941 to 1943. On March 21, 1943, she married LG Rothney in Petoskey. He preceded her in death in 1993. Evelyn taught school in McBain and served as secretary to the chamber of commerce in Marshall. She and LG moved to Centreville in 1958. From 1966 until 1977, Evelyn and LG served in the agricultural field in Abcokuta, Nigeria, Ibadan, Nigeria, Bangkok, and Can Tho Vietnam. After returning to Centreville in 1977, Evelyn worked at Stant Plastics. In 1978 she began work as a bookkeeper in the St. Joseph County clerk’s office and later in the Friend of the Court office, from which she retired in 1987. Evelyn was a member of the D.A.R., Mintdale Ladies, and Lockport Ladies Clubs, and the Centreville United Methodist Church where she served on many committees and groups. She enjoyed working on family geneology and loved trraveling. Evelyn was an accomplished hostess and loved entertainer and cooking for her family and friends. She made many cherished memories and will be greatly missed. Surviving are her daughter, Helen (Tom) Fahey of Snohomish, Wash.; sons, Richard (Susan) Rothney of Roscommon, Mich., and Robert (Patricia) Rothney of Westerville, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Andrea Rothney of Traverse City; grandchildren Krista Ascherl, Eileen (Michael) Grimes, Marianne (Ryan) Colvin, Mark Fahey, Brian Fahey, Margaret Rothney, Ian Rothney, Elena Rothney, Samantha Rothney, Abigail Rothney and Jacqueline Rothney; step grandchildren Jacob, Robert and Eric Hanson; great-grandchildren, Laura Ann Ascherl, Skyler Grimes, Andrew Grimes, Ross Grimes, Lucie Grimes, Anna Colvin and Molly Colvin. Florence A. Tibbott, 100, formerly of Lafayette St., Sturgis, Mich, died on Feb. 15, 2009 in her home at Greentree Senior Living, in Indianapolis, Ind., where she had been a resident for the past six years. Prior to that she lived in St. Louis, Mo for 16 years. She was born  March 4, 1908, in LaGrange, a daughter of Harry C. Free and Lulu M. (Iliff) Free and was a graduate of LaGrange High School in 1924 as well as Madam Baker’s Teachers College, now Butler University, in Indianapolis.  She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. She was a teacher for seven years in the LaGrange/Monroeville, area and also gave piano and violin lessons.  Following that she was employed with the Kirsch Company in Sturgis, for many years and retired December 31, 1972. She married Robert C. Tibbott on November 27, 1931, and they moved to Sturgis in 1935. He preceded her in death on September 10, 1983, as well as her parents and three sisters, Isabelle Kambol, Carrol Arklie, and Evelyn Mecklenburg Surviving is a son, Joel D. Tibbott (Barbara D. Powers Tibbott) and a daughter, Sonya S. McCarthy (Terence G. McCarthy), six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren , nieces, nephews, and cousins. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and graveside services, with interment of cremains, will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Oak Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Sally Wicks, First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, officiating. Memorials may be directed to an organization of choice.   |

Florence C. Mayhew, 74, of Coleman, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009 at MidMichigan Medical Center, Midland. She was born July 4, 1934 in Sheridan Township, Clare County, the daughter of the late Charles and Cora (Zimmerman) Davis. Florence C. Davis married Ernest S. Mayhew in October of 1952 in Clare. He died Feb. 13, 1984. Florence had been employed at the Clare Nursing Home and was active in the Church of Daniel's Band, Beaverton. She is survived by her children, Larry and Mary Mayhew of North Adams, Connie and the late Roger Shafer of Clare, Christine Brewer of Clare, Lanny Mayhew of Coleman, Charles and Konnie Mayhew of Coleman; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Errol and Erma Davis of Midland. Florence was preceded in death  by her brothers Floyd and Ronald Langworthy. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Church of Daniel's Band with the Rev. Duane Koontz officiating. Forrest “Bud” Porterfield, age 76, of Clinton passed away Feb. 17, 2009. Bud was born Sept. 20, 1932, in Carsonville, Mich., the son of Harry and Cora (Bachman) Porterfield. On June 26, 1955, he married Nancy Hedlesky in Ypsilanti, Mich. Bud retired from Ford Motor Co. after 30 years of service. After retirement, he was a  bus driver for the Clinton Community Schools. Bud loved the game of baseball and was a Little League coach for many years in Clinton. He was a devoted New York Yankees fan and an avid fisherman who loved the outdoors. Bud was a loving husband, father and grandfather and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. To them, he was their hero.  Besides his wife, Nancy, Bud is survived by his children, Kim Sines, Randy (Jana) Porterfield, Brian Porterfield, Dale (Julie) Porterfield and David Porterfield; grandchildren, Brad, Danielle, Kelsey, Kristen, Forrest, Megan and Zach; great-grandchildren, Zoe and Emma; siblings, Alice, Kay, Dale and Roger; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Joyce. At his request, cremation has taken place. Jo Ann Cooney, age 86 of Centreville, Mich., passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born in Bluffton, Ohio on June 15, 1922, a daughter of Ralph and Gwendolyn (Troxel) Patterson. Jo Ann graduated from high school in Bluffton, in 1940. On April 2, 1944, she married Robert Cooney, Jr. in Bluffton.  He preceded her in death on July 2, 2002. Jo Ann worked at the ASCS Office, Ranglers and the flower shop all in Centreville. Jo Ann and Bob also owned and operated the  Chubby Dairy Bar in Centreville and were caretakers of the Kirsch Guest House in Sturgis. Jo Ann belonged to the Lions’ Club Auxiliary and the Centreville United Methodist Church. She was an avid bowler, and loved fishing and feeding hummingbirds. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed. Surviving Jo Ann are; daughters, Janeen Hall of Sturgis, Colleen (Sammy) Goins of White House, Tenn.; son Robert Cooney, III of Centreville; sister,  Betty Clark of Milford, Ohio; sister-in-law, Harriett Snow, Kansas City, Mo.;  grandchildren, Daneen Birkey, Minnesota, Donald (Babette) Buel, Sturgis, Amy Smith, Sturgis, Erik (Brandy) Goins, Gallatin, Tenn., Erin Goins, White House, Tenn.; great grandchildren, Zachary Alwine, Avial McClain, Autumn Birkey, Adam Birkey, Maggi Bishop, Beo Bishop; great great grandchild, Avah Mott, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and a great-grandson. According to her wishes cremation has taken place and private family Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Interment of ashes will be at Prairie River Cemetery in Centreville. Joseph Anthony Applegate, age 34, of Jackson went to be with the Lord on Feb. 10, 2009. He was born on Sept. 27, 1974, in Marion, Ohio, to Lamont Applegate and Cindy (Davis). He graduated from Elgin High School in Marion, Ohio, in 1993 and was married to Tonya Smith in 1997. In 2003, he graduated from JCC and served in the U.S. Army as a chaplain’s assistant in Seoul, Korea. Joseph was a very easy going individual who loved a good joke and just sitting around conversing with everyone. He had a significant impact on numerous lives from his work as a nurse for Foote Hospital. Joseph loved his work and the individuals he helped. Joseph was a very goal oriented individual who was very devoted to whatever he was doing. He loved the Lord and had a passion for spreading the Lord’s message. He had another admirable calling to serve in the U.S. Army. Anyone who was ever touched by Joseph will greatly miss him. A loving, caring individual who loved to help anyone he could and he will be remembered for this. Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Tonya, and their two wonderful sons, Nathaniel and Caleb; his father, Lamont (Beverly) Applegate and mother, Cindy Davis; his brothers, Dustin (Tiffany) Applegate, Jason Fork and Andrew (Jennifer) Fork. He is also survived by both of his grandfathers, Edward “Chuck” Applegate and Ervin Davis; several aunts and uncles, and cousins; in-laws, Ray and Shirley Smith, Teresa and Myron Powers, Rick Smith and Steve Smith, and several nieces and nephews. His grandmothers, Phyllis Applegate and Mary Davis, preceded him in death. He will be missed for his full-of-life morale and his uplifting spirit. Julius G. Kamphuis, age 91, of Holland, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at his home.  He was born September 11, 1917 to Gerard and Jennie Kamphuis in West Olive.  Julius was a member of Harlem Reformed Church and served as elder, deacon, superintendant and teacher in Sunday school and Catechism.  He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945 for which he received the Bronze Star.  Julius was a rural carrier for the U. S. Postal Service for Holland and West Olive for 25 years and was involved in blueberry farming for 45 years.  He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sheryl Lynn; and brother, Henry Kamphuis.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Christine; children, Ronald and Pam Kamphuis, Wayne Kamphuis, Debra and Tom Lokers, all of Holland; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Anna Dams, Agatha Hassevoort; in-laws, Marian Kamphuis, Anna Mae De Vries, all of Holland, Geneva De Vries of West Olive, Gerald and Theresa De Vries, Audrey Allen, all of Zeeland; many nieces and nephews.  Funeral services with military honors will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 21 at Harlem Reformed Church, 6854 144th Ave., Holland with Rev. Lyle was born September 24, 1936 in Marshall, Michigan, to Harold and Frances (Thomas) Sanders and came to Holland in 1961. Lyle married the former Julia Steen in 1958.  He received a  bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in 1959. He had been employed by the E.W. Bliss Co, Northern Fibre Products and the Mitchell Bentley Corporation in materials and production management.  He later owned and operated Alla Products Co. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. She was preceded in death by one son, James Dumaw; one grandson, Robert Kaufman; four brothers, George, Thomas, Paul and Charles Swaney; three sisters, Estelle Swaney, Kathryn Graff and Alice Gilhert. "BOB" passed away in Jacksonville, Florida on February 17, 2009 after a long illness. Mr. Newton was born on January 23, 1931 in West Lorne, Ontario, Canada. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Dixie F. (Lape) Newton; and his parents Norman F. and Ruth (Morrison) Newton. He is survived by his son Phillip (Deborah) Newton of Ferndale, MI and daughter Brenda (Jim) Moroney of St. Augustine, FL, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bob was a long time resident of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; Ferndale and Royal Oak MI; Winter Haven, FL and lastly of St. Augustine, FL. Bob retired after many years with Ford Motor Company's Ford Sterling Plant, Sterling Heights, MI. In 1959 as a proud member of the UAW, Canada, Bob represented his plant at a convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Bob also received a Lifetime Membership Award from the Catalpa Club in Ferndale, MI. Bob became a proud citizen of the USA in September, 2007 and was excited to vote for President for the first time. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Michigan. |

Nancy A. Sting 1945-2009 Nancy Ann Sting, 63, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on January 19, 2009, while under hospice care, following a four-year illness. She was born on March 16, 1945 in Roseville, the daughter of William and Edna Haas Winkler. She was married to Bob J. Sting on October 29, 1983 in Prescott by Rev. Dan Waxell. He was her husband and companion for 28 years. She passed away on her husband's birthday. She is survived by her husband, Bob. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place in Hudson, Fla. A memorial service was held on January 25, 2009 in Hudson, Fla. Robert Michael Storch, 63, of West New York, NJ and Scottsdale, Ariz. passed away Feb. 11, 2009. Bob was born Aug. 10, 1945, in Fort Wayne, Ind. He lived a very generous, selfless life, always giving himself to others. He attended Ohio Northern University and graduated with a BS in  pharmacy. He also received his MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. His work took him all over the country, most recently to Manhattan where he worked for Duane Reade as a VP of Pharmacy and Business Development. His leadership abilities led him from the President of his high school class to the President of his Theta Chi fraternity, and continued into his professional life. He was a member of NACDS, the St. John's College of Pharmacy Dean's Advisory Council, and a guest lecturer at Ohio Northern. He loved his work, his family, and the Lord, and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Susan (Bragalone) Storch, and his children, Alex and Anna. Bob was the son-in-law of Marilyn and Italo Bragalone, of Hillsdale. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale. Arrangements are being made by the family. Roger John Helder Sr., joined his heavenly father on Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at the age of 89. His struggle with Parkinson’s disease ended in the comfort of his home in Holland while he was surrounded by family.  Roger was born in Grand Rapids on July 7, 1919. Son of John and Dora Helder, and brother of Gladys Tolsma, Roger had a happy childhood nurtured in the Christian faith. He was a graduate of Calvin College and the University of Michigan.  Roger married his one true love, Marian VandenBerg, on August 4, 1942, just days before his first deployment as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. They were separated in body, but were never apart in spirit. After the war, Roger and Marian were blessed with four children, who they raised in Dearborn, Michigan. After Roger obtained his MBA, he was employed at Chrysler Corporation, retiring as Vice President and Controller in 1977.  His retirement years were spent in service to his God and his family. Roger and Marian devoted many years to mission work in Africa and New Mexico and became cornerstones in the lives of their grandchildren.     Roger will be missed by his wife, Marian; his children, Roger Helder Jr., Marga (Glenn) Hoort, and Malo (Craig) Engel; his grandchildren, Deb (Chad) Langeland, Tom (Jenny) Hoort, Cat Hoort, and Laura (Erik) Barton; and three great-grandsons, Will, Josh, and Jack Langeland. Born in Holland, he spent his entire life in the Holland area.  Mr. Reidsma was a lifetime member of Immanuel Church.  He served the church in many ways, from a Sunday school treasurer to helping with missions.  He worked for Dutch Boy Bakery, Holland Rusk Company, General Motors, and eventually the Holland Board of Public Works before retiring. Sam was age 38 at the time of his passing. He passed away peacefully at the residence at Arbor Hospice, surrounded by family, on Feb. 8, 2009. He was born Oct, 6, 1970, in Ypsilanti. Sam is survived by his wife of 13 years, Penny (Portice) Pugh; two daughters, Kaitlyn, 11, and Madelyn, 9; his mother, Phyllis Mazwick, and preceded in death by his father, Bill Pugh. He is also survived by stepparents, Mary and Don Mature; five brothers, Lenny, Nate, Kirk, Ben and Donny; and three sisters, Stephanie, Francine and Petra; plus several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Sam was employed at the Ann Arbor News for 21 years. He enjoyed participating in activities with his daughters and was a loving and devoted dad to his girls. He also enjoyed his bowling league with his co-workers, and looked forward to going deer hunting with his friends every year. Sam will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, the Ridgeway Church of the Nazarene, 6886 Ridge Highway, Britton, with the Pastor Hansen officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to P.O. Box 274, Tecumseh, MI 49286 for Kaitlyn’s and Madelyn’s future education. |

Shirley Elaine Makemson, 71, formerly of Camden, passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at Harborside Health Care in Bryan, Ohio.  She was born June 17, 1937, in Detroit, the daughter of Robert and Eloise (Lutz) Makemson. Shirley graduated from Camden High School in 1955 and had been employed at Mohawk Tools.  She was a former member of the Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge in Bryan and her hobbies included cooking, knitting, crafts, and visiting the casinos. Survivors include two sisters, Kaye (Jerry) Lambright, Sr., Hillsdale and Sandra Smith, Fremont, Ind.; two nieces; one nephew and special friends, Dave, Jamie, Elizabeth and Isabel Holbrook, Clynn Moore and Jerry Freese. Her parents preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor Sam Wickard officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in Oakridge Cemetery, Marshall. Visitation is scheduled 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials to her family would be appreciated. |

Solange N.  Roberts Jan. 31, 1925 — Feb. 2, 2009 Solange Noel Roberts, 84, passed away Feb. 2, 2009, peacefully in her home in Rio Rancho, N.M. Born Jan. 31, 1925, in the French territory of Suez, Egypt, to Charles and Louise Perceval, she was educated in Egypt and France. Her father, mother and her brother Paul preceded her in death. Surviving her are sister Patricia of Guadeloupe; half sister Jean-Marie of France; son Brian, his wife Bonnie of Vermont, son Marc, his wife Elizabeth, their children Rhianna and Brennan of New Mexico and daughter Monique (Boyd), her husband Kevin and children Avery and Sean of Illinois. Solange moved with her husband to Hillsdale in the 1950s. She was a generous and giving person devoting much of her time to helping other people. She volunteered with the Red Cross, Grey Ladies, Meals on Wheels and was a board member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She worked at Hillsdale College in admissions, teaching summer school French and at the college’s Health Service for more than 20 years. In 2002 she moved to New Mexico. She loved to read, play Bridge and be with her friends and family. Services were held in Rio Rancho on Feb. 9. Those desiring, can make contributions in her name to the American Heart Association. Tena M. Belcher, 45, of Hillsdale, formerly of Hudson, passed away on Monday Feb. 16, 2009 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born on Sept. 9, 1963 in Hillsdale to Donald A. and Gladice A. (Day) McLouth, Sr. Tena was raised in the Pittsford area.  She lived in Hudson for 13 years before moving to Hillsdale two years ago.  She graduated from Pittsford High School in 1983.  She was employed as a certified nurse’s assistant for the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale for several years.  She loved spending time with her grandkids, she enjoyed baking cakes and she loved working at the Medical Care Facility. She is survived by, one son, Tony E. Belcher and his friend Dana Lauffer of Lake Worth, Fla.; one daughter, Tammy M. Belcher and her friend William McDowell of Hillsdale; three grandchildren, Jordan Belcher, Zebb Belcher, Tucker McDowell; Tena’s significant other, David Bernath of Hillsdale; Tena’s mother, Gladice A. McLouth of Pittsford; three sisters, Cindy (Michael) Preston of Adrian, Debbie Ballard of Hillsdale, Connie McLouth and her friend Leo of  Osseo; four brothers, Donald (Flora) McLouth, Jr. of Pittsford, Calvin (Helene) McLouth of Hudson, Daniel McLouth and his friend Ginny Pankhurst of Pittsford, David McLouth of Pittsford; several nephews, nieces and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her father. He preceded her in death October 1, 1992. Virginia was a long time member of the Shabbona United Methodist Church. She worked for Walbro s Corporation in Cass City for 27 years, retiring in 1982. She is survived by one son; Gerald (Jacqueline) Heronemus of Decker, one daughter; Sharon (Richard) Zielesch of Spring Hill, Florida, one brother; Maurice Marsh of Lapeer, 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Wanda V. Peck of Sturgis passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 at the age of 96 years, 11 months, 13 days, while in the loving care of nurses, aides and staff at Thurston Woods Village.  She has now reunited with her beloved late husband Martin E. Peck, former Mayor of Sturgis and high school teacher. Ms. Peck was born in Stroh, Ind. on March 5, 1912 and moved to Sturgis in 1917 from Chanute, Kan. She married Mr. Peck on June 15, 1938. She worked as executive secretary and office manager of the former Sutton Tool Company from 1941-1976. After retirement, she was a consultant for the firm. Ms. Peck shared her faith by the way she lived her life. She served her church in many capacities: She brought communion to the sick, was a lifetime member of Our Lady of the Rosary, and member of the Altar Society. Her business skills were used as a member and past president of the finance committee of the Holy Angels Board and the Holy Angels School Foundation. She was civic minded serving as Secretary and Assistant Treasurer on the Board of Commission on Aging (COA) from 1991-1995. She volunteered for the City of Sturgis working on each Election Day. Ms. Peck had been a member of the Voluntary Service Guild of Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary and also served as its chairperson from 1979-1980. She was an active member of the Business and Professional Women’s Board of the Sturgis Women’s Club. She sponsored the arts through the Sturges Civic Auditorium and attended events there on a regular basis. Wanda loved her time spent with family and friends. She shared an insatiable love of reading on a wide variety of topics. She enjoyed many hobbies: she loved gardening and quilting. Ms. Peck expanded her love of music by taking organ lessons then used her baking and cooking skills to create a little social event with the other ladies along with the music. The monthly Birthday club was another source of lasting friendships. Along with her late husband, she was preceded in death by: her parents, John (Ignatius) and Emma Zawatski, a baby sister Regina, brother Leonard, all of Sturgis; sister Valeria Scott of Pontiac and  nephew Donald M. Scott Sr. of Rochester Hills. Wanda leaves behind to grieve her loss: nephews Daniel M. (Mary Kay) Scott and Patrick D. (Cathy) Scott, niece Eileen (Bill) Flynn and Luanne Scott; also many grandnephews and grandnieces. Two cousins remain: Jane Barry of Coldwater and Helen Rubley of Bronson. Special friends: Dorothy and Harry Niebling, Ko and Tom Steinborn, Catherine Kidd, and a host of other dear friends. Her abiding love of God committed her to a life of service to others. She gave of herself unconditionally. She will truly be missed. Relatives and friend may call after 2 p.m., Friday, at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes, Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home with Mr. Jim Goethals presiding.  A Funeral Mass with a celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at Holy Angels Catholic Church with The Rev. Father Richard Altine, celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Bronson. Memorial donations may be directed to Thurston Woods Village or Hospice of Kalamazoo.
