Bill Segrist died on June 27 at Hopsice House of Holland after a courageous, three year journey with cancer. His motto during this time was “I want to live” and live he did. “Grampy Segrist” or “Big Bill” was a friend to all. Bill was born in Delta, Ohio, where he was known as “Butch,” to Clifford and Dorothy Goodwin Segrist. His mother died of cancer when he was 8 years old. His father and stepmothers, Marian and Norma, preceded him in death, as well as Mim Segrist, Milt Rearick, Paul Williams, and beloved aunt and cousin, Alta and Terrie Batdorf. He married Carol Putman in 1962 and their greatest joy was the raising of their three children: Mark William, Stacy Rae, and Jennifer Lynn. The family moved to Cambridge, Ohio where they made many friends until they moved to Holland, MI in 1975. Bill quickly became involved in community, church, Holland Schools, and Hope College activities. He rarely missed a play, ballgame, or recital of his children and grandchildren. If he couldn’t attend, he called to find out the details. He was a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Third Reformed Church. Bill and Carol were very involved in the Young Life Organization, both locally and regionally, helping to start TimberWolf Lake YL Camp and the Saugatuck YL Club. Bill’s passion was golf, becoming a member of Clearbrook Golf Club when they moved to Saugatuck in 1994. He loved his hometown of Delta and was involved in many activities. He was elected as one of the youngest Masters of the Masonic Lodge in Delta and remains a member there. Bill worked for the Toledo Edison Co. for many years until discovering his gift of sales. He currently owned The Insurance Group, LLC insurance agency with his daughter, Stacy, who will continue to manage the business. Bill will be deeply missed by his wife of 47 years, Carol; son, Mark and Cindy (Matt, Tim, and Rebekah) Segrist of St. Louis, MO; daughter, Stacy and Doug (Benjamin, Jordan, and Raechel) Kamphuis of Holland, MI; daughter, Jennifer and Jay (Whitney and Abram) Fields of Weidman, MI. His brother, Al and Donna Segrist of West LaFayette, IN; sister, Sue and Milt Hollinger of Chicago; brother, Dick and Sandy Segrist of Howard, OH; sister, Jean Rearick of Bowling Green, OH. He also embraced Carol’s family as his own: Joyce Williams, Marilyn and Don Walker, Christine and Les Pfund and Bud and Loa Putman of Ohio, along with many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends. It will be difficult to walk this earth without you, but we are comforted by knowing you are safe in God’s arms and left us with many warm, happy memories. The Segrist family is grateful for the loving care shown to them in so many ways during this time. In lieu of flowers, please consider Young Life, Third Reformed Church, or Hospice House of Holland. A worship service celebrating his life is scheduled for Saturday, July 4th at 1 p.m. at Third Reformed Church in Holland, MI. Visitation with the family will be held from 10-12:30 and 2:30-6 p.m. at the church.   Please visit www.carepages.com under WilliamSegrist (with no space) for additional thoughts, pictures, directions and love.   |
