Charles Richard 'Dick' Ehinger

Sunday, July 19, 2009 3:00 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Charles Richard “Dick” Ehinger, age 80, of Oakville, Mo., passed away quietly in his home on June 29, 2009. He was born the eldest of three siblings on March 25, 1929, to Ruth and Charles “Chod” Ehinger in Adrian, Mich. His passion for tinkering emerged at a young age when his grandfather spotted him heading off to the middle of a field barely able to carry the tools he had in hand. When questioned as to his intentions, Dick replied that he was going to fix that old pump used for irrigating the family’s crops. His grandfather laughed and told him to go ahead since he knew the pump had been rusted tight for a number of years and that it was unlikely that he could remove even a single bolt. His grandfather had truly underestimated the young boy, and for the next 20-some years they plowed up pump parts from every corner of the field. When Dick was around 8 years old, he asked his grandfather for a job at the Ehinger Manufacturing plant, which his Grandfather owned. He started working there every morning before school by hauling water from home on a wagon in the summer or by a sled in the winter. It was during one of these visits to the woodworking plant that the boiler was being inspected. Due to his size at this young age he was asked to clean the inside of the boiler in spots full-grown men could not fit, further fueling his interest in how all things worked. Dick attended Adrian Senior High School, graduating in 1946. His enduring passion for tinkering and fascination with machines led Dick to engineering school at Michigan Technological University, where he played offensive/defensive tackle for the football team, was a member of the National Guard and graduated with a mechanical engineering degree on June 11, 1951. During the summer months of college he worked with his father at the Simplex Paper mill in Palmyra, Mich. While attending a dance during his college years, he met the love of his life, Dorothy May Dean. They were married Aug. 25, 1949.  After graduation the couple moved to Painted Post, N.Y., where Dick accepted his first engineering position with Ingersol Rand. Later they moved to Buffalo, N.Y., where he accepted an offer to work for J.H. Williams Tool Company. At the pinnacle of his career he was instrumental in the rebuilding of the Tonawanda Coke Company after a catastrophic fire had destroyed much of the facility. As the company grew he was promoted to vice president, moving to St. Louis to open a sister plant named Carondelet Coke. It was during this time he traveled abroad on the Concorde SST jet to Europe. Later in life, he went back to the classroom and earned a stationary engineers license and became an engineering consultant  for several companies. Dick survived his wife, Dorothy, who passed away earlier this year. He is survived by his four children, Karin Palmer of Houston, Texas, Patricia Waldo of Nashville, Tenn., Mary Wikoff of Katy, Texas, and Paul Ehinger of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; his sister, Ann Galvin of Nicholasville, Ky.; and his brother, Bob Ehinger of Leesburg, Va. A memorial service will be held at the Palmyra Presbyterian Church starting at 11 a.m. on July 24, 2009. A reception will immediately follow the graveside service. In lieu of flower arrangements, contributions to the Palmyra Presbyterian Church would be greatly appreciated.

Linda D. Hefner

Monday, July 20, 2009 10:05 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Linda D. Hefner, 54, of Coldwater died Monday, July 20, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Lockwood Community Church with Pastor Shayne Looper officiating. Interment of ashes will be held at Lester Cemetery at a later date. Linda was born Sept. 30, 1954 in Coldwater to Arthur and Barbara (Knight) Hefner. Psalm 116:15 — Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. On July 20, 2009 something happened that was precious in Jesus‚ eyes. Linda Dena Hefner went to be with him. The story of their love had been going on for years. He found her when she was struggling over many life issues — health, relationships, finding a job so she could launch out on her own and find her own place to live. She found those answers in Jesus. He became her home. He guarded and guided her through her life and health issues so that she lived on this earth much longer than a lifelong diabetic can expect to live. (By the way, thank you for that Lord). She served the Lord in love and was always a help to those in need and whether they required food, shelter or clothing she served them. Her example of love was wonderful to see and to receive and in her love she helped many on a road to recover their lost way. We love her and we will miss her but we know right where to find her — with Jesus her Lord and her Savior. Linda was a lifelong resident of Branch County.  She was a 1972 graduate of Coldwater High School and a member of the Lockwood Community Church.  Linda had attended Kellogg Community College, where she had worked toward a nursing degree. She worked at the former Carriage Inn, now known as the Laurels of Coldwater. Linda cared for many children of family and friends in her home, volunteered with the Branch Interfaith Hospitality Network, and was a Library tutor with the Literacy Council. Linda is survived by her son Nathan Hefner, her grandson Caelan Hefner, her mother Barbara Hefner-Parks, sisters Sandra Brainard, Patricia Hefner, her brother Daniel (Barbara) Hefner all of Coldwater and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her father Arthur Dean Hefner. Memorials may be directed to the Branch Interfaith Hospitality Network. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home. Please visit www.dutcherfh.com to share a thought in the online guest book.
