Douglas Darr Arnold, 79, of Edgerton, Ohio, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Hillside Country Living, Bryan, Ohio. Doug fought a courageous battle with cancer and died at peace with family members by his side. Douglas D. Arnold was born Nov. 11, 1930, in Hillsdale, the son of Henry Dewey and Katherine Marie (Bates) Arnold. He married Rita R. Shultz Dec. 26, 1980, in Bryan, and she preceded him in death March 16, 2007. Doug was an accomplished artist during his high school days at Hillsdale High School. He was featured in LIFE Magazine on June 20, 1949, with his work hanging in the National Scholastic Art Show two years in a row. Doug worked at The Aro Corporation in Bryan for 41 years, retiring in 1991. Doug was well known for his industrial photography. He was co-director of the Bryan V.F.W. Veterettes Drum & Drill Team, which won several national championships. Doug was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Montpelier, Ohio. He loved to watch his grandsons participate in their sporting events. He enjoyed his life and family. Doug will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Douglas is survived by three sons, Mike (Teri) Arnold, of Charlotte, Jeff (Brenda) Arnold, of Bryan, and Doug (Peggy) Arnold, of Enid, Okla.; one daughter, Patricia Kidd, of Texas; one stepson, Carl Shultz, of Tucson, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Rene Shultz, also of Tucson, and Tami Shultz, of Findlay, Ohio; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and cherished friend, Barbara Zulch. Doug was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ross and Donald Arnold. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Krill Funeral Home, 114 East Hull St., Edgerton, with the Reverend Bob Damschroder officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Duane served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a retired truck driver. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, hunting, fishing and camping. He and his wife had belonged to the Night Owls Camping Club of Quincy. On Sept. 19, 1947 he married Florence “Kitty” (Sheerer) and she preceded him in death in 2008. Survivors include two daughters, Geraldine (Jack) Kerspilo of Reading, Cindy (Steve) Blonde of Litchfield; two sons, Mike (Judy) Bills of Litchfield, Dan (Connie) Bills of Litchfield; six sisters,  Imallee (Doug) Worden of Riga, Audrey Lattas of Hillsdale, Dollie Teller of Litchfield, Leona Katz of Coldwater, Shirley (Richard) Harrison of Jonesville, Alice (Rich) Luther of Coloma; two sisters-in-law, Jolene Bills of Jackson, Jean Bills of Litchfield; four brothers, Charles (Marcia) Bills of Jackson, Leroy (Betty) Bills of Oklahoma, George (Shirley) DePew of Homer, Jim (Mary) DePew of Jackson; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ken and Robert Bills; one sister, Wanda Karney; and his step-mother, Leone Bills. Edna is survived by her brother, Russell (Marjorie) Brown of Medina; half sister, Annabelle Scott of Texas; special nephew, Everette (Cathy) Brown of Clayton, and many other extended family and friends who will dearly miss her. She was born Nov. 17, 1923, in Burr Oak, a daughter of the late Levi and Hattie (Schallhorn) Hill. Eleanor had been living with her daughter for the past 11 years. Prior to that she had resided her whole life in Burr Oak and graduated from Burr Oak High School. On Feb. 5, 1946, she married Norman Haney in Centreville. He died Jan. 4, 1992. Mrs. Haney was a homemaker and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burr Oak. She enjoyed crocheting, animals, gardening and word-find games. She is survived by three daughters, Anna (James) VanNest of Sturgis, Joyce (Kenneth) Brackett of Burr Oak and Theresa (Neil Redick) Grose of Osceola; a son, Michael (Anna) Haney of Casa Grande, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosie Miller of Burr Oak; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Norman Lee Haney; a grandson, James Richard VanNest; a sister, Doris Bennett; and three brothers, Eugene Hill, George William Hill and Albert Hill. Gregory Alan Byers, 50, of Hillsdale, passed away, Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born, Feb. 18, 1959, in Hillsdale to Frederick L. and Charlotte (Duerr) Byers. He was married Feb. 21, 1995, to Deborah Gordon and she survives. Gregory was a 1977 graduate of Hillsdale High School and was employed by ACT in Hillsdale for 25 years. He enjoyed working on cars, lawn mowers and small engines. Besides his wife, Deborah, he is survived by two sons, Zachary and Garrett Byers, both at home; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Marian Tuttle; his maternal grandmother, Florence Duerr of Chicago; a sister, Machelle (Gary) Langhann of Hillsdale; and two brothers, Gary (Janette) Byers of Osseo and Larry Byers of St. Louis, Mo. Gregory was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services for Gregory Alan Byers will be 11 a.m. Friday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor James Olinger officiating. Harold R. Snay Sr. Harold R. Snay Sr., age 86, a son of the late Robert M. and Dora M. Bellor Snay passed away Wednesday in the Shelby Nursing Home. Harold was a lifelong resident of Mt. Clemens. He was born on March 26, 1923, in Mt. Clemens. He was married to Dorothy Buchalski on June 3, 1944 in Utica, and they settled in Mt. Clemens. She passed away in 1973. Harold was employed at Selfridge as a heavy equipment operator for 24 years, retiring in 1972. He was also employed by the Mt. Clemens School System where he did custodial and security work until he retired in 1982. Harold was the Past Worthy President of Mt. Clemens Eagles Aerie #1269 from 1986-1987, also an avid hunter and fisherman. He served in the US Army during WWII. Surviving are his children, Harold "Rob" Snay Jr. of Cattaraugus, NY, Barbara (John) Morawski of White Lake Township, Lawrence (Mary Lou) Snay of San Diego, Calif and Thomas J. Snay of Mt. Clemens; grandchildren, John, Paul, Stephen, Joey, Christina, Gordon and Michael. Harold was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy in 1973; son, James in 1999; and special friend Marge Tomlin in 2005. He was well read and had a wide variety of interests including music. He and his family traveled extensively in the continental United States and enjoyed their cottage in the Upper Peninsula. She was a member of the White Pigeon United Methodist Church, the bridge club and enjoyed playing cards. Surviving are her husband, Richard W. Laura A. Kaffenberger, age 50, of Adrian passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at the University of Michigan Hospital, losing her battle to become a heart transplant recipient. She was born Oct. 18, 1959, in Adrian, to Hal First, Sr. and the late Wanda (Watkins) First. Laura was appreciative of her father as he provided special care daily throughout her illness. On Aug. 17, 1993, Laura married Scott Kaffenberger and he survives. Laura is also survived by her two children, Brittany and Justin, both at home and who will miss her dearly. Laura was a cosmetologist until her children were born, at which time she gave up her career and devoted her life to her family and home. Laura loved to be outdoors and was very proud of her flower gardens. Laura was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. In addition, Laura is survived by two brothers, Hal First, Jr. of Adrian and Don First of Manitou Beach; two sisters, Kim First of Addison and Kelly (Eric) Ehinger of Adrian; her father, Hal (Donna) First, Sr. of Hudson; nieces, Krista, Erica and Katie; Aunts and Uncles, Helen and Jack Smith, Ruth Ann and Leslie DeJonghe and Moe and Thelma First; father- and mother-in-law, David and Elaine Kaffenberger of St. Helen; many brothers- and sisters-in-law and other nieces and nephews. Leeta L. Stanton, age 87 of Sherwood, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo after a brief illness. Leeta was born Feb. 6, 1922 on the family farm in Sherwood, a daughter to the late Rex and Rhea (Annis) Ladyman. Leeta graduated from Sherwood High School with the Class of 1939. She then attended Mercy College of Nursing at Leila Post in Battle Creek, where she received her Registered Nursing Degree. She was employed as an R.N. at Sturgis Hospital for many years. On Oct. 28, 1944, she married the love of her life, A. John Stanton in Sherwood. He preceded her in death in 1989. She had lived in the Sherwood area all of her life and found great joy in watching and being involved with the family farm. Leeta had been active with the Branch County Rural Youth and had belonged to the Country Couples Dance Group. She was also a member of the Sherwood Free Methodist Church and had attended the Crossroads Bible Church. She is survived by one daughter: Ellen (George) Hopkins of Tekonsha, two sons: Erwin L. Stanton of Sherwood and Edward R. (Cindy) Stanton of Edwardsburg, ten grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister Wilma Ladyman. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral Services celebrating the life of Leeta L. Stanton will be Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at 11 a.m.. from the Funeral Home with Pastor Daryl Dexter of the Sherwood Free Methodist Church officiating. She was born Nov. 4, 1959 in Hillsdale the daughter of Robert and Clara (Gary) Martin. She is survived by one daughter, Kesia (Ryan) Steffien of Brunswick, Ohio; one son, Logan Blalock of Frontier; two grandchildren, Brooke and Cody Steffien; two sisters, Tania (Charles) Allen of Ossineke, Mich., and Darcia (Alan) French of Hillsdale; three nephews, Robbie (Kathy) Allen of Ossineke, Chad French of Hillsdale, and Chris French of North Adams; several great-nieces and great-nephews; a good friend, Darrel Sears; step-mother, Sarah Martin; and step-sisters and step-brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.  Lisa worked at the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department for three years,  the Frontier Post Office as a relief Postmaster for four years and was a Hillsdale City Carrier for one year. She was also a member of the Arabian Horse Association. A graveside memorial service to honor the life of Mrs. Lisa Lou Sears-Blalock will be held at the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Ray Wilson officiating. Friends, who wish, may make memorial contributions to the family for Logan’s Trust Fund or to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center.

Mary had been employed as a respiratory therapist at  Three Rivers Hospital and she enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends. Surviving are three children, twins: Michael Kevin (Linda) Watrous of Constantine, and Debra Susan (Robert) Cantu of Coopersville, and Richard William (Willemina) Watrous of Sturgis; eight grandchildren, Jason, Tracey, Melissa, Amy, Eric, Craig, Thomas, and Kimberly; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband,  Larry Knapp; one sister, Helen Summers, and three brothers, William, Daniel, and Everett “Fitz” Fitzgerald. Ruby Anna (Boughtin) Stanton, age 101, of Centreville, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Fairview Living Centre in Centreville. Ruby was born in Warren, Ind., on Feb. 26, 1908, a daughter of John and Lillie M. (Felton) Dutton. On Aug. 14, 1927, she married Louie Boughtin in Warren. He preceded her in death July 1952. On Dec. 31, 1970, Ruby married John Stanton in Three Rivers. He preceded her in death in 1979. Ruby worked as a seamstress at Denton Mills in Centreville from 1926 to 1971 and was a member of the Centreville Baptist Church. Surviving are 10 grandchildren, Joe Pahl Jr., LouAnn Pahl, Dave Pahl, Vicki Pahl, Mike (Diane) Pahl, Teresa Pahl, Neil Pahl, Robert Pahl, Mary Pahl and Dawn (Fred) Najmy; two great-grandchildren, Ricky and Katey Najmy; and her special friend Dorothy Pagels. She was preceded in death by her parents; her  husbands; a daughter, Violet (Joseph) Pahl; sisters Edna Fuller, Mable Dutton and Ethel Hively; and brothers Vern and Glen “Woody” Dutton. Relatives and friends will be received 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Eley Funeral Home in Centreville. Religious services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Centreville Baptist Church, with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Interment will be at the Prairie River Cemetery. Stephen Henry Bornman, 69, of White Pigeon, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend, Ind., after an extended illness. He was born Sept. 28, 1940, in Indianapolis. He had been a White Pigeon resident since 1990, coming from Syracuse, Ind. He was a 1959 graduate of Syracuse High School, a graduate of Goshen College, and a chartered life underwriter. On April 23, 1960, he married Twilla Anne Morehouse in Milford, Ind. He was a well-known businessman and owner of White Pigeon Mini-Storage. Steve was an entrepreneur who enjoyed creating a business. He was a member of Christ Chapel in South Bend, Ind. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Candace (Jon)Martin of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sons, Chris (Rebecca)Bornman of Syracuse and Shawn (Melissa)Bornman of Milford; nine grandchildren; a brother, Patrick Bornman of Fort Wayne; a sister-in-law, Irene Bornman of Goshen, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Meyers; and a brother, Roger Bornman. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday at Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.Saturday at the funeral home, with senior pastor Steve Sumrall and pastor Steve Coyle of Christ Chapel officiating. William J. Adams, age 85, of Tecumseh died Wednes­­­day, Nov. 18, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ypsilanti. He was born on Feb. 9, 1924, in Flint, Mich., the son of Homer P. and Margaret F. (Rouleau) Adams, Sr. On Sept. 12, 1948, 61 years ago, he married the love of his life, Eloise Cook. William practiced dentistry in Tecumseh from 1962 until he retired in 1986. He then became a Funeral Director and was associated with Handler Funeral Homes since 1993. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Tecumseh, and was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corps. His education included a B.S. from Michigan State University in 1950, a M.A. Degree from Western Michigan State University in 1955, a D.D.S. degree from University of Michigan in 1962 and finally a B.S. Degree in Mortuary Science from Wayne State University in 1991. He was very active in the Tecumseh community for many years, serving on the Protective Services Commis­sion, Kiwanis Club, Com­munity Fund Board, City Council, Herrick Memorial Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees, and from 1974 to 1994 served on the United Savings Bank, United Bancorp, Inc., and United Bank and Trust Boards of Directors. William will be greatly missed by all of those who knew him, worked with him, served with him and loved him. In addition to his wife, Eloise, he is survived by his sons, Dr. Thomas Adams of Munising, Mich., and Dr. Jeffrey (Kathi) Adams of Wayland, Mich.; his daughter, Rebecca (Bill) Buchinger of South Lyon; his sister, Joyce (Herb) Jacques of Linden, Mich.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and one granddaughter, Mallory Buchinger. At his request, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 20, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Tecumseh, with Pastor Richard Mortimer officiating. Inurnment will take place in Brookside Cemetery Columbarium at a later date. The family will also receive friends at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered to the charity of the donor’s choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.handlerfuneralhomes.com.
