ALBERT L. MCCOON MARLETTE Albert L. McCoon passed away peacefully among family and friends Thursday, December 18, 2008 at Marlette Hospice House. He was born August 18, 1929 in Fairgrove, son to the late James B. and Edith (Sangster) McCoon, and lived in Marlette since early childhood. He was a life-long resident of Tuscola County. He married Naomi Crisan on his birthday, August 18, 1951 in Bad Axe and they raised five wonderful children. They owned and operated a dairy farm in the Marlette area and were members of the Tuscola County Retarded Children's Association. He drove bus for Marlette Schools for over 30 years and also drove for the Marlette Athletic teams for most of that time. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He is survived by his sons; Robert McCoon of Davie, Florida, Donnie McCoon of Marlette and Allen McCoon of Marlette, daughter; Deborah (Don) Bonwell of Rogers, Arkansas, grandchildren; Chase and Kendra Bonwell of Rogers, Arkansas and Tony Bonwell of Warren, Michigan, sisters; Linda Gomes of Marlette, Carole Dalrymple of Flint, Sister-in-law; Johanna McCoon of Marlette and many special nieces and nephews. Albert was preceded in death in October by his wife of 57 years, Naomi his daughter; Janet, his parents, his brothers; Robert and Jack McCoon and sister Joyce Cook. ARDATH E. MALTBY MARLETTE Ardath E. Maltby, age 96, of Marlette, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Marlette Extended Care Facility in Marlette. Mrs. Maltby lived in Marlette with her daughter Joan and was previously from the Flint area. She was born August 12, 1912 in Reed City, daughter to the late Louis and Betsy (McLachlan) McDonald. She married John McKay in 1935 who was an instructor at GMI for 20 years, he died in 1967. She then married Earl Maltby in 1974. He was a CPA at Dupuis & Ryden for 35 years and he died in 1993. Ardath was an elementary principal in the Flint School District for 29 years, retiring in 1974. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Michigan Retired School Personnel and Community Presbyterian Church in Flint. She enjoyed reading , gardening and most of all, her family. She is survived by her daughter; Joan Jensen of Marlette, son; Charles (Sandra) McKay of Swartz Creek, brother; Eldon (Elayne) McDonald of Kaleva, 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, brother Donald McDonald and sisters; Katherine Williams and Alta Shore. Ardath had a beautiful Christian life, full of sunshine and cheer, dispensing comfort and consolation wherever she went. She will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to know her. Cremation has taken place at the Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in the Marlette First Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Chris Wolf officiating. Donald L. Brewer, age 78, of Jonesville, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.  He was born Aug. 13, 1930 in Detroit to John and Loretta (Jacques) Brewer. He was married Nov. 8, 1955 to Iris Major and she survives. Don was self-employed in the auto industry. He was a graduate of Quincy High School in 1950, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. Surviving besides his wife Iris are four daughters Lee (James) Barve of Quincy, Jolie (James) Graves and Jamie (Randy) Brooks, both of Jonesville, and Monique (Curt) Sarles of Hillsdale; son Paul (Cammie) Brewer of Fla.; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister Loretta Marie (Robert) Knox of Fla.; and a sister-in-law Lillie Brewer of Coldwater. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Charles. Cremation has taken place. Douglas Lee Wolf, age 39, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly onWednesday morning, Dec. 31, 2008, at his home. He was born March 17, 1969, in Kalamazoo, Mich., a son of the late Lewis and Dorotha (Brown) Wolf. Doug had resided in Sturgis for the past four years, coming from Centreville,  where he graduated from Centreville High School with the class of 1987. On Oct. 9, 2004, he married Annette Casner at the Church of God in Three Rivers. Doug had been employed by Coachman Industries in Middlebury, Ind., for several years. Prior to joining Coachman he had worked for Viking Industries in Centreville, Dutch Housing in LaGrange, Ind., and Victorian Homes. He was a member of the Church of God in Three Rivers and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and doing gunsmith work. Doug had a true love and appreciation for nature and the outdoors and often went to the woods to just sit and watch and listen to nature. He is survived by his loving wife, Annette; a stepdaughter, Rachel Clewell, at home; a sister, Sue (Tim) Barnes of Vicksburg; four brothers, Ken Wolf of Colon, Don (Cyndi) Wolf of Three Rivers, Roy Wolf of Colon and Jay (Debbie) Wolf of Three Rivers; and many nieces and nephews. Ryan, 85, of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center.  She was born Sept. 8, 1923 in Reading to Olin and Vera (Fisher) Foulk.  She was married July 15, 1945, to Rex C. Ryan and he survives. Edith was a 1940 graduate of Reading High School, she received a bachelor’s degree in 1945 from Michigan State Normal School (Eastern Michigan University) and her master’s degree from Michigan State University.  She taught for 23 years in Reading schools, for three years in Jonesville schools and coached girls basketball in Jonesville.  Edith was a member of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma, Farm Bureau, the Retired Teachers Association and was a 4-H Leader. Besides her husband Rex, she is survived by a daughter, Susan (Jerald) Belding of Jonesville; three sisters, Donna (Bernard) Reed of North Adams, Lorene (Burton) Ladd of Litchfield and Cleo (Glen) Wallace of Hillsdale; a sister-in-law, Cheryl Reynolds Foulk of Hillsdale, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Edwin Robinet Flint Twp. Edwin Robinet, age 87, of Flint Twp., (formerly of Marlette and Imlay City) passed way Wednesday (December 24, 2008) after an extended illness at Heritage Manor Healthcare Center in Flint. He was born November 15, 1921 in Lum to John and Florence Robinet. He married Marie Elsie Stern November 3, 1945 in Capac. Ed and Marie lived 33 plus years in Imlay City, Marie died June 10, 1990. Ed then married Helen M. Teeple on September 19, 1991. Ed and Helen lived in Marlette for about 12 years. The last four years they lived in Flint Township. Helen recently died on December 9, 2008. Ed grew up and attended school in the Kings Mill area (north of Lum). He served in the U.S Army during WWII. Emma Mae Marcoux, age 90, of Hudson passed away Wednesday morning, Dec. 31, 2008, at Lynwood Manor in Adrian. She was born March 8, 1918, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Herman and Ethel (Robinson) Kamen. She lived in Hudson since 1973, coming from Detroit. She married Francis Xavier Marcoux on Dec. 12, 1934. He preceded her in death April 24, 1976. She was a past member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson, was a Past President of the Hudson Senior Citizens. She was a former employee of the Cy Fab Mfg. Co., Party Stores and the V.F.W. Hall in Detroit. She also took care of elderly people in Hudson for many years. Surviving are her children, Emma (George) Jamerson of Clayton, John Marcoux of New York, Dr. James (Jeanne) Marcoux of Howell, Margaret (James) Duncan of Hudson, Otto (Lynn) Marcoux of Clayton, Ida Marcoux of Orlando, Fla., and Hazel (Daniel) Connolly of Oregon, and a daughter-in-law, Doris Marcoux; 27 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, many great-great-grandchildren and several great-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Francis Marcoux, Jr.; eight brothers and sisters and an infant son. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Ben Fulayer officiating. Ethel Jane Nash, 65, of Hillsdale, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at The University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.  She was born Sept. 18, 1943 in Quincy, Ill., to Harry Neal and Hazel Anita (White) Sherrick.  She was married to George William “Bill” Nash on July 27, 1963 in Bowen, Ill.  He passed away Aug. 21, 2008. Jane was the co-owner and operator of Nash Hallmark, Jill’s Office Supply and Nash Drugs. She was a 1963 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, friend and businesswoman. In 1994, she won the Athena Award, an award recognizing women for professional excellence. In addition, she was the Hillsdale Hospice Board Chairperson, United Methodist Church member and chair of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee, member of the Hillsdale College Women’s Commissioners, former member of Jaycees and American Association of University Women.  She served many years as room mother for her two sons. Surviving  are two sons, Bill (Stephanie) Nash of Naperville, Ill., and Brad (Kerri) Nash of Hillsdale; four grandsons, Alex, Andy, Coby and Sam; one sister and brother-in-law, Sandra (David) Schuldt of Iowa City; and one brother and sister-in-law,, John (Brenda) Sherrick of Bettendorf, Iowa; three nieces, Lisa (Bob) Barleen, Michelle (Will) Adcock and Andrea Sherrick; and one nephew, Brian (Kelly) Sherrick and three grandnephews. Memorial services for Jane Nash will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Hillsdale officiated by the Revs. David Schuldt and Curtis Jensen.  Private interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Hillsdale.  The family will receive friends for visitation from 6-9 p.m. Friday from at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Frances “Fran” John, 99, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon Dec. 30, 2008, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born Jan. 24, 1909, in Chicago, a daughter to the late August and Martha (Tessner) Schlage. Fran had resided in Sturgis since 1945 coming from Chicago. On July 2, 1927, she married Richard John in Chicago. He died Dec. 4, 1983. She had been employed as a switchboard operator for the Kirsch Company in Sturgis for 16 years retiring in 1971. Fran had attended Chicago public schools and she was an active member of the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sturgis. Fran enjoyed volunteering her time with the Lutheran Ladies Mission Circle and the Sturgis Hospital Guild. She is survived by five grandchildren, Doug (Cathy) Hopkins of Sturgis, Bruce Hopkins of Sturgis, Gwen (Bob) Kryder of Colon, Sue Donaldson of Sturgis and David Hopkins of Sturgis; 11 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, one daughter; Lois Kreitzer, two brothers; Edward Schlage and August Schlage and two sisters; Clara Sickinger and Jean Cauwels preceded her in death. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church where services celebrating the life of Frances John will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Francile (Baer) McGee, age 89, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away unexpectedly on Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 2008, at her home in Texas. She was born and raised in Sturgis, Mich., graduating from Sturgis High School with the Class of 1937. She was a daughter to the late Clarence and Bessie Baer of Sturgis. Garth married Dorene Burgett on February 23, 1985 in Ruby, Michigan. He was a District Manager for K-Mart for many years. He also worked at the Port Huron Times Herald and then at Eagle Window & Doors in Lewiston, MI. He is survived by his wife Dorene, daughter; Dianna Enders of South Carolina, son; Daniel Enders of Texas, stepsons; Todd Hurlburt of Algonac, Phil Hurlburt of St. Clair, Steven Hurlburt of Adrian, stepdaughter; ReaAnn Ready of Birch Run and8 grandchildren. Gertrude Rhoda Upper North Branch Gertrude Rhoda Upper, age 94, of North Branch (formerly of Lapeer), passed away Monday (December 29, 2008). She was born September 19, 1914 on the Graff farm on Perry Road in Grand Blanc to Leopold and Myrtle (Robinson) Sharland. She married Harold Upper on October 1, 1936 in Goodrich, MI, they had been married 54 years when he died in 1991. Gertrude graduated from Goodrich High School in 1932 and attended her 76th class reunion in 2008. Harold and Gertrude moved to Lapeer in 1939. Mrs. Upper was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Suncrest Auxiliary, and was a 4-H leader for many years. She loved to play cards, especially euchre and canasta, and had a special way with dogs and cats. Mr. and Mrs. Upper traveled extensively, her apple pies were extraordinary. Holly Christine Rowe, age 25, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly early Friday morning, Jan. 2, 2009, at her home. She was born Nov. 3, 1983, in Sturgis, a daughter of Lonnie and Carolyn (Roberts) Rowe. Holly had resided in Sturgis most of her life, with the exception of the year she lived in Portage, Mich. She had been employed by WMSH Radio Station in Sturgis. Holly graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 2002 and attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Glen Oaks Community College. Holly was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis and had a true talent in art and theater. She loved animals, especially her cats. Surviving are: her mother, Carolyn Beardsley of Sturgis; father, Lonnie (Shirley) Rowe of Elkhart, Ind.; two sisters, Tammy (Gary) Shoemaker of Northfield, Ohio, and Anna (Gary) Sizemore of Sealy, Texas; a brother, Craig (Nancy) Rowe of Sturgis; grandmother, Geneva Roberts of Sturgis; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Robert Beardsley. The family will receive friends from 2-3:45 p.m. Sunday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes–Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Isabelle Nicholson, of Saugatuck Township, died on December 29, 2008, at Hospice House of Holland. Isabelle was born in Detroit on June 11, 1935.  She leaves behind three brothers and nine sisters along with dear nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many dear friends. In the sixties, Isabelle worked for the International Headquarters of the UAW, including a few years as assistant to the Director of Public Relations.  It was in the heyday of the Detroit unions where she met and worked with such important political figures as Walter Ruther, John Conyers, John F. Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt and Martin Luther King Jr. Isabelle was also the president of the thousand member Office and Professional Employees Union, AFL-CIO. In 1966 Isabelle moved to New York City with her husband, Tom Nicholson, a senior editor for Newsweek. Isabelle worked for a time at an elite advertising agency and then at the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University.  While at Columbia, she studied photography under Mark Haven's guidance. Isabelle's love of photography continued throughout her life and her photographs are treasured by her friends and family. Isabelle was part of the start-up team that launched Newsweek's answer to Sports Illustrated, INSIDE SPORTS!, afterward Isabelle was hired by Newsweek to work in the National Affairs Department until 1986, when the Nicholson's decided to make their home in the Saugatuck area. Isabelle truly loved her community and enjoyed participating in many local organizations.  She was on the executive board and was a long-time member of the Saugatuck-Douglas Garden Club.  She was on the board of the Lakeshore Jazz Connection, a member of the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society, a founding member of the Douglas Historic Preservation Committee and a member of the Lakeshore Association.  She drew a great deal of pleasure from being the leader of a local book club for many years.  Cremation took place in accordance with Isabelle's wishes.  A memorial service will be  Saturday, 2:00 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, Saugatuck. JOSEPH D. BULONE PORT SANILAC Joseph D. Bulone, age 86, died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at home in his own bed surrounded by the love of his children and their spouses. He was born November 15, 1922 in Cleveland Ohio, son of the late Domenico and Domenica DiDomenico Bulone. He married Frances E. Hendricks on June 14, 1952 in Birmingham. She died December 20, 1999. Joseph served in the Pacific Theatre in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during WW II. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He worked on the design staff at the G.M. Tech Center and he was a founding member of the Port Sanilac Fine Arts Association. Joe was one of the most prolific and respected professional painters and sculptors in southeastern Michigan. His 60 year career, which included many Best of Show awards earned well into his 80's, brought him recognition as one of the finest landscape and seascape artists of his time. His favorite subjects were Lake Huron sunrises and the Port Sanilac lighthouse. In his leisure time he was a Detroit Tigers fan and never gave up on the Lions. He enjoyed his vegetable and flower gardens and his homemade meatloaf was legendary. Surviving are his children; Vincent M. of Oak Park, Daniel J. of Memphis, TN, Cathi (Bryan) Bulone-Campbell of Port Sanilac, Helen M. Bulone of Portland, OR, and Maria (David) Kujat of Lexington, three brothers; Tony of Meridian, ID, Mike of Cleveland, OH and Rego of Anaheim, CA, one sister; Virginia Bulone of Fullerton, CA, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Angelo, Dominic and Louis. James L. Gyomory, 63, of 64874 Lutz Road, Constantine, Mich., died at 9:03 a.m.  Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Goshen General Hospital Goshen, Ind., after his battle with cancer. He was born April 13, 1945, in Deford, Mich., to Daniel and Mary (Laszlo) Gyomory. On Dec. 10, 2004, in Sturgis, Mich.,he married Carol (Poley) Cheeks. He had worked for over 20 years for Crest Homes, Middlebury working in quality control and overseeing the drafting department. He was a member of the Elkhart Moose, he was an avid photographer and enjoyed cross country skiing, NASCAR, and was greatly interested in the lighthouses of the Great Lakes. Survivors include his wife, Carol Gyomory; two sons, Brian (Noelle) Gyomory of Simpsonville, SC, and Darin (Linda) Gyomory of Flower Mound, Texas; two step-daughters, Erin Drake of Brown County, Ind., and Cassondra (Bill) Tomlinson of Mendon, Mich.; two step-sons, Jason Wentworth of Howe, Ind. and Earlin Cheeks of Three Rivers, Mich.; three grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; sister, Jean (Mike) Murphy of Holt, Mich., and the mother of his children, Judy (Kosto) Gyomory. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother. Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 South Main Street, Middlebury, Ind. Jayne Britt, age 62, of Zeeland passed away Thursday January 1, 2009 at Hospice House of Holland.   Jayne was a member of Hope Church (RCA) of Holland. She was a registered nurse for over 30 years and was the Coordinator of the Holland Hospital Parish Nurse Program from 2001 to 2004 and the Holland Hospital Outreach Manager from 2004 to 2006.   Jayne is survived by her husband Steve Britt and her daughter Katie of Holland. Also surviving are her brothers, Charles and Janet Smits of Florida and James and Elaine Smits of Zeeland; father in-law, Edward Britt of Colorado; and brother in-laws, Michael and Susan Britt of Maryland, James and Barbara Britt of Colorado, and Martin and Aurelia Britt of Illinois.   A memorial service for Jayne will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday January 3, 2009 at Hope Church (RCA), 77 W. 11th St. Holland. Jeanne V. Burns Metamora Jeanne V. Burns, age 99, of Metamora, (formerly of Rochester and Huntington Woods) passed away Thursday (December 25, 2008). She was born June 12, 1909 in Detroit, Michigan to Charles and Louise (Bartsch) Beaudriau. Jeanne married Joseph Charles Burns on December 6, 1941 in Napolean, OH. Jeanne was a past president and secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary (Homer Wing Post 172) and a charter member of the Metamora Historical Society. In her early years she was an entertainer, singing for the original Red Apple Club on Detroit radio station WJR and with famous bands of that period. Her family settled in Michigan in 1820. Kathleen Ahlgrim, age 88, of Charlotte, Mich., and formerly of Cadillac, Mich., passed away Monday Dec. 29, 2008, at Moore’s Adult Foster Care in Charlotte. She was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Mendon Twp., Mich., a daughter to the late Clifford and Vera (Bennett) Happel.  Kathleen was raised on a farm near Burr Oak, Mich. and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1939. On Dec. 22, 1946, in Burr Oak, she married Herbert Ahlgrim and 12 years later they moved to Cadillac where they resided until he passed away in 2005. While living in Burr Oak, she had been employed for the First National Bank and while in Cadillac she was a homemaker.  Kathleen enjoyed to sew. Surviving are one son, Lynn H. (Janne) Ahlgrim of Charlotte; two grandsons, Eric L. (Heather) Ahlgrim of Burr Oak, and Kurt R. Ahlgrim of Melbourn, Fla.; a great-grandson, Karl E. Kathryn A. Wassman 1950-2008 Kathryn A. Wassman, 58, Harbor Beach, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2008 at her home in Harbor Beach, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Mt. Clemens on October 22, 1950, the daughter of the late Alois and Shirley (Yax) Cukr. Kathy and Doug Wassman were united in marriage on June 6, 1970 in Mt. Clemens. She was an employee of Chemical Bank in Harbor Beach and a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach. Kathy enjoyed scrap booking, gardening and spending time with her family. To all who knew her, she was a beautiful person, both inside and out, and she will be sadly missed. She is survived by her husband, Douglas Wassman, Harbor Beach; a son, Cameron (Susan) Wassman, Mt. Kurt A. Derr, 37, of Osseo, passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at home.  He was born on Aug. 29, 1971, in Hillsdale, the son of Dean E. and Sharon A. (Delaney) Derr.  Kurt attended Pittsford Schools.  He worked for Frank Armstrong Construction in Hillsdale. Kurt enjoyed working with horses, working with his hands, especially building dog houses and rabbit hunting when he had time. LaFonda M. Knowles, age 93, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at her home. No services will be held at this time. Interment of ashes will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Quincy at a later date. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home. LaFonda was born on March 15, 1915 in Coldwater to Charles and Margaret (French) Lindsey. She married Herman Knowles on Oct. 20, 1935 in Quincy. He preceded her in death on May 19, 2008. LaFonda has been a lifelong resident of Branch County. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Community Health Center and for many years at the former Coldwater Regional Center, from which she retired in 1975. LaFonda enjoyed square dancing belonging to the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club, and enjoyed traveling; wintering in Florida with her husband, reading, learning new things and all sorts of puzzles. Most of all, she enjoyed the time she spent with her family. In addition to her husband Herman, LaFonda was preceded in death by her daughter Nancy Radebaugh in 2006 and her brother George Lindsey. NELSON L. DUNLAP DECKERVILLE Nelson L. Dunlap, age 93, of Deckerville, died Tuesday December 23, 2008 in Autumnwood of Deckerville. He was born August 20, 1915 in Palms, the son of the late Andrew and Wilhelmina (Lietke) Dunlap. He married Miss. Evelyn Baumeister on April 15, 1944 in Deckerville, after 62 years of marriage she preceded him in death on April 18, 2006 Nelson was a member of the VFW and American Legion, Gideon's International, a past Boy Scout Explorer Leader, and was active in 4H and a long time member of the 1st Baptist Church. He was employed by Eaton Mfg, before entering the US Army, which he served from 1941 to 1945, in North Africa, Italy, and Sicily, earning a Silver Star. After WWII he worked for the Kroger Grocery Stores. He then learned the carpenter trade from Lee Vincent, and later started Dunlap Builders, where he was a noted home builder and cabinet maker. He is survived by one son Richard (Karen) Dunlap of Deckerville, two daughters, Gaye (Steve) Bauer of Faribault, MN., and Karen (Joe) Allen of Sandusky, ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. Also, three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Marion (Stanley) Dunlap, Mrs. Florence (Floyd) Baumeister, and Mrs. Carol (Don) Baumeister. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy, five brothers and three sisters Nelson L. Dunlap's "Legacy of Life" service will be 11:00 AM., Saturday in the Apsey Funeral Home. Rev. Paul Castle of Countryside Free Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Downing Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8:00 PM., Friday, and from 10:00 AM., Saturday until the time of service. Robert “Bob” Allan Townsend, age 71, of Clayton and Jensen Beach, Fla., died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at his home in Florida. He was born May 19, 1937, in Hudson, Mich., to Allan M. and Alice R. (Sturtevant) Townsend. Bob attended Hudson High School from 1951-1955 where he earned three letters and a pre-college diploma. Bob attended University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University and The University of Georgia. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1960 and his graduate degree in 1970. Bob served seven years in the Naval Reserve without foreign assignment from 1960 to 1968. He was combat ready for the Bay of Pigs invasion, Cuba 1961 via the USS Yorktown at Long Beach, Calif. He also attended two years of College Reserve Officer Training Corps classes. Bob began his teaching career with Los Angles City School. He also taught at San Fernando Senior High, Toledo Ohio’s, E.L. Bowsher Sr. High, Coral Gables Sr. High, Hialeah Sr. High, Belle Gardens Sr. High, Martin Co. Sr. High, Ft. Pierce Westwood Sr. High and Port St. Lucie Sr. High. He supervised teacher candidate interns for University of Miami. He became a State Certified General Contractor and State licensed registered Real Estate Broker in Florida. He was an elder and a member of Cadmus Presbyterian Church. Bob’s hobbies included fly fishing for trout, and plugging for bass. He enjoyed rifle hunting deer and shot gunning small game. He enjoyed traveling, reading, and spectator sporting events. Since retiring, Bob had been P/T Master of Clayton’s Pit BBQ. Bob is survived by three brothers, Dale L. Townsend of Clayton, Mich., Harold (Janet) Townsend of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Gary (Jacquelyn) Townsend of Stuart, Fla.; six nieces, one nephew and 11 grandnieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, with Pastor David Fulks officiating. Sister Irene LeDuc, formerly known as Sister Charles Irene LeDuc, died on Dec. 29, 2008, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 83 years of age and in the 63rd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister was born in Cheboygan, Mich., to Charles and Irene (Passeno) LeDuc. Sister graduated from Cheboygan High School in Cheboygan, Mich., and received a Bachelor of Philosophy Degree in Social Studies from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Mich. Sister Irene spent 21 years ministering in education in Detroit and Newberry, Mich.; Elmwood Park and Elgin, Ill., and Sherburn, Minn. She was a Religious Education Teacher for six years at St. Gregory in Newberry, Mich., and six years at St. Luke in Sherburn, Minn. Sister was part of the Housekeeping Staff at St. John Seminary in Plymouth, Mich., from 1960 to 1964, and at Weber Center in Adrian, Mich., from 1971 to 1987. She was Sacristan for Holy Rosary Chapel in Adrian for 13 years, and also worked in the flower gardens on the Motherhouse grounds. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2000. Sister is survived by a brother, Charles LeDuc of Brighton, Mich., and a sister, Oda Ostrander, of Carbondale, Colo. Visitation is from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, in the Rose Room at the Dominican Life Center, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m in St. Catherine Chapel. Sue Carrie Melvin, 72, of Enid,Ohio, loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, was born to John Rennels and Sarah Babet (Vincent) McClain on Oct. 4, 1936, in Bird Lake, and went home to be with her Lord on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Enid, Okla. Sue grew up in Jerome and attended North Adams High School.  She moved to sunny California, where she met the love of her life, William Melvin. In 1962, she married William D. Melvin in Spring Valley, Calif. Sue was a homemaker and enjoyed spending precious time with her family and grandchildren. Even though she was so far away from her parents and siblings, they were always close to her heart. When her daughter and son-in-law decided to move to Enid, she soon followed in 1997. There was no keeping her away from her grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter, Tina Rodriguez and husband Ramiro of Enid; three grandchildren, Candice Rose Chavez, Christian Michael Rodriguez, and Ciara Alexis Rodriguez; and one great-grandchild, Natalia Rose Chavez, all of Enid; four brothers, Tom, Johnny, Ronnie and Terry McClain; and three sisters, Dorothy Thomas, Barbara Griffin and Claribel Cook. Sue was preceded in death by her husband William D. Melvin and one sister Mary Jane Hansen. Thomas Melvin Ostrander Lapeer Thomas Melvin Ostrander, age of 82, a lifelong resident of Lapeer, passed away on Monday (December 29, 2008). Thomas joined the Lapeer Public safety Department as a reserve officer. He later assumed a full time position in 1964. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1974 and retired from that position in 1988. Sgt. Ostrander was given a special tribute by then Governor of Michigan James J. Blanchard, State Senators and representatives upon his retirement. Sgt. William Dale Mallow, age 84, a well-known Bronson, Mich. area farmer, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at  Sturgis Hospital.  He had been in failing health. Dale was born March 5, 1924, in Noble Township, a son of Clint and Maude (Roberts) Mallow, was a lifelong resident and graduated from Burr Oak High School.  He first married Dorothy Monroe.  She died in 1946.  He then married Marion (Foss) King on March 12, 1951, in Angola, Ind.  She died July 16, 2003. Dale was a member of the Branch County Farm Bureau, served on the Branch County Road Commission for several years and was a member of the Board of Directors of the former First of America Bank in Bronson.  He was also a buyer for Westfall Stock Yards for many years. Dale so enjoyed farming that he considered raising cattle as a hobby. Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Lloyd and Ruth Mallow and Leslie and Carole Mallow, all of Bronson; stepson and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Thelma King of Bronson; grand children, Jim Mallow and Kim Coney; step-granddaughters Brenda Bennett of Bronson, Lori Winchell of Charlotte, S. C., andAmy Butcher of Burr Oak; and seven step grandchildren. Dale was born March 5, 1924 in Noble Twp., son of Clint and Maude (Roberts) Mallow. He was a lifelong resident and graduated from Burr Oak High School. He first married Dorothy Monroe. She died in 1946. He then married Marion (Foss) King on March 12, 1951 in Angola, Ind. She died July 16, 2003. Dale was a member of the Branch County Farm Bureau, served on the Branch County Road Commission for several years and was a member of the Board of Directors of the former First of America Bank in Bronson. He was also a buyer for Westfall Stock Yards for many years.  Dale so enjoyed farming that he considered raising cattle as a hobby. Surviving Mr. Mallow are his sons and daughters-in-law, Lloyd and Ruth Mallow and Leslie and Carole Mallow all of Bronson, step daughter-in-law Thelma King of Sturgis; grand children Jim Mallow  and Kim Coney; great grandchildren Jael Mallow and Caleb Mallow; step-granddaughters Brenda Bennett of Bronson, Lori Winchell of Charlotte, S.C., Amy Butcher of Burr Oak; and seven step-great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his two wives and his step-son Eugene King. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson with Rev. Dale Walterhouse officiating. Interment will follow in Fry Cemetery. The family received friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 2– 8 p.m. Friday. Memorial donations are suggested to Pleasant Hill Missionary Church. |

William “Bill” Strong, age 82, of Holland, died Monday, December 29, 2008, at Holland Hospital, with his wife by his side. Bill was born in Holland August 18, 1926, to William and Marie (Moes) Strong, and was a lifelong resident of the area.  A member of Calvary Reformed Church, he was a former member of Sixth Reformed Church in Holland.  He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.  Bill retired from Holland Hitch after 40 years of service.  Preceding him in death were his parents; and a sister, Lorraine Strong.  Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Antonette “Toni”, of Holland; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Elaine VanderKooi, Alvin and Lois Harsevoort, Eugene and Marie Spoelman, Gerald and Virginia Harsevoort, and Larry and Adeline Nykamp; nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Reformed Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Blaine Newhouse.  Burial will be in Olive Township Cemetery.  Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, from 5-9 p.m. at the Downtown Chapel, Dykstra Life Story Funeral Homes, 29 E. Internal Medicine at Cornell University, Radiology at Providence and Harper Hospitals. Diplomate of the American Board of Radiology, AMA, Wayne, State and Roentgen Ray Societies. Chief Radiologist at River District and Almont Community Hospitals. Emergency Physician at Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe. Radiologist at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Detroit. Commanding officer in the USAF Hospital in Bordeaux, France. The Medical profession, history and music were his passions. Spoke six languages. Wayne County Medical Society Award in recognition of fifty years in Medicine. A mentor to many. Survived by his wife of 57 years Tatiana; daughter Margaret, son Dr. Joseph and many nieces and nephews. Visitation Sunday 2 p.m. until prayers at 5 p.m. at A.H.
