KACHADOURIAN MARITZA (NEE MANOOGIAN)

Died on January 27, 2009, at Beaumont Hospital, in Royal, Oak. She was 95. She lived in her own home in Royal Oak, MI, until the time of her death. She died from complications due to a stroke. Kachadourian was born in 1913, in the historic and hilly Armenian city of Kharpert, now part of Turkey. She was a survivor of the 1915 Armenian genocide. After her father died in the genocide, Kachadourian, with her mother, brother and sister fled to Aleppo, Syria. She lived in Aleppo with her family in an orphanage for displaced Armenians where her mother worked as a guidance counselor. Kachadourian went to Canada in 1933, and married Kachig "Jimmy" Kachadourian, also a genocide survivor. The couple moved to Highland Park, MI, that same year and opened the Satisfactory Lunch restaurant (renamed J&M Bar in 1952) in Highland Park, MI. They owned and operated the restaurant from 1933 to 1960. Satisfactory Lunch was located on Second Ave., between Ford Ave. and Labelle St., north of what is now the Davison Expressway. Kachadourian worked as a waitress at the restaurant, serving three meals a day largely to factory workers from Ford Motor Co.'s Highland Park Assembly Plant. Typically, she served a meal of beef stew, a slice of bread, butter and a cup of coffee, which in total cost 55 cents. The restaurant also had a strong client base made up of Detroit Street Railways (DSR) bus and streetcar drivers and repair shop workers, who were based in Highland Park. Plant workers from Ex-Cell-O Corp., a packaging supply firm on Second Ave., also were "regulars". "My mother was a wise counsel", said her eldest son, Dan Kachadourian. "She was able to relate with all types of people of all ages and give them comfort and good advice about everything from business to affairs of the heart." During World War II, Kachadourian and her husband worked as agents to sell War Bonds. President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent them a letter and certificate to notify them that Satisfactory Lunch restaurant sold more bonds than any other bar or restaurant in Highland Park. Kachadourian became a U.S. citizen in 1946. In-state will be on Friday, January, 30, 6-9 p.m. (Don Gark prayers at 7:30 p.m.), at St. Sarkis Armenian Church, 19300 Ford Rd.
