Detroit Lion Player from 1953-1961 with two world championships, 1953 and 1957. Gil holds the record for the largest size Super Bowl/Champion-ship Ring, a size 24, which a quarter will drop through. To stay in shape in the off season, Gil was also a big time wrestler. Gil was known for his generosity and keeping local Detroit charities functional. Also the Wayne State Football Program would be nonexistent without Gil's fundraising and helping establish the Tartar Gridiron Club. Wayne State University Hall of Fame member. Gil attended Murray State University in Murray Kentucky where he is also in their Hall Of Fame. When he joined the Lions in 1953, Gil would jump feet first into the wedge on kickoff returns and is still known today as one of the great legions in NFL history for special teams. In 10 seasons with the Lions, Gil never missed a kickoff. Art Donovan regarded him as one of the dirtiest players on the field but most respected and well mannered off the field. John Madden was quoted as saying he was the greatest 'wedge breaker' of all time. When he jumped feet first into the wedge and took out all four players the announcers said "That is Gil Mains, Murray State Thoroughbred" and the other claimed "No, that's a wild Hoss". |
