Betty J. Mills, 83, of Jonesville, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009 at home. She was born on Sept. 25, 1925 in Saginaw to Frances Morris Melon. She was married on Oct. 13, 1945 to Charles Cosier and he preceded her in death in 1984. She was married on Sept. 26, 1987 to Richard C. Mills and he preceded her in death in 2007. Betty  retired from Bob Evans Farms in 1986 after 25 years of service. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Church Women and the American Legion Auxiliary. Betty is survived by four daughters, Diane Cosier of Ann Arbor, Linda Cosier, Tracey Parney and Cindy McDowell all of Jonesville; four grandchildren, Kristen Curtis, Justin Shonk, Nathaniel VerHeek and Sarah Parney; two great-grandchildren, Caitlynn Shonk and Kailey Rangel; one step-daughter, Marcia Hansen; and a step-son, Norman Mills of California. Betty was preceded in death by her husbands, her mother and a great-granddaughter Angel Shonk. Memorial services for Betty J. Charles J. Ellis 1922 - 2009 Charles J. "Charlie" Ellis, 86, Parkland, Fla. and formerly of Pigeon, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2009 in Parkland. He was born in Flint on March 21, 1922, the son of the late Albert and Lena (Yunker) Ellis. On June 5, 1956, he was united in marriage to Zora Rapson in Millington and she preceded him in death on January 10, 1983. He was then united in marriage to Lillian "Bea" Davis MacKenzie in Bradenton, Florida on March 2, 1984 and she preceded him in death on December 2, 2000. Charlie was a teacher, guidance counselor and bus driver at Owendale Public Schools as well as a guidance counselor at Laker High School. He was a great friend to many staff members and students. He was a Shriner, a 32nd Degree Mason and a former member of the Moose Lodge. He was also a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Pigeon. He is survived by several nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, the daughter of Beatrice McKenzie Ellis, Janet (William) Ballagh and her family. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Mary Marshall. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. Rev. John Britt, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Pigeon, officiated. Charles Timothy Marsh, 72, of Kalamazoo, Mich., died Jan. 22, 2009, at Borgess Hospital. Chuck was born May 3, 1936, in Kankakee, Ill., a son of Harry and Anna (Sanborn) Marsh. Chuck graduated with honors as a Sergeant First Class from Howe Military School, Howe, Ind., in 1954. Chuck was a radio and television announcer for over 50 years, having started in Sturgis, Mich., in 1953. He earned several broadcast awards, including the Detroit Press Club Foundation’s Best Radio Documentary of the year in 1978 and The American Legion Auxiliary Best Local Radio Program in the interest of  Youth in 1988. He was also Director of Education at the Institute of Broadcast Arts in Cincinnati, Ohio. Chuck appeared several times in such television series as “Death Valley Days” and “High Chaparral”; one forgettable motion picture, “Mini Skirt Mob”; and numerous stage plays, including “The Gin Game” at The Robson Theater in Grand Rapids, Mich. Chuck was Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame member Del Shannon’s close friend and first Personal Manager. He was also a published writer of many short stories. After his retirement from active broadcasting he remained in radio by gathering and writing news stories for WAKV in Plainwell, Mich. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, and ex-wives, Sonja and Jackie; his son, David; five daughters, Misty, Kim, Tina, Catrina and Chrissy; and 14 grandchildren. Curtis Leroy Peterson, 37, of Union City, died on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 due to a tragic work accident. He was born on Oct. 24, 1971 to Donald L. and Emily P. “Judy” (Weller) Peterson in Coldwater. Curtis had worked for various manufacturers in the area including; Griswald in Union City, Quality Veneer and Knapp Manufacturing in Coldwater, and most recently at Union City Forest Products. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and would do anything for anybody. He loved his family, especially his children. Dale Kenneth Case, age 50, of Ceresco died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 at his home. He was born on Jan. 9, 1959 in Coldwater to Kenneth Ross Case and Leona Bishop Case.  He had lived his entire life in this area and lived at the same address since 1997 Dale married Kelli Jo Heuer Case on May 18,1991 at the Church of God in Burlington. He graduated in 1978 from Union City High School. After graduation, he went to work at Vincent Paint Shop in Tekonsha, then to Western Rubber Co. in Coldwater. He moved with the company to Fremont, Ind., retiring after 21 years to take over the family farming. In the spring and fall, he also enjoyed working for AcMoody Farms in Union City. In his younger years, he loved canoe racing down the St. Joe River and hanging out with his friends, trapping, hunting and fishing. He played baseball and softball. He loved playing co-ed softball with his wife. He was known for how fast he could run. He also enjoyed golfing. The last couple of years, he and his wife really enjoyed bowling on a league in Bronson. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, going hunting in Wyoming, mule deer hunting and bear hunting in Maine. He loved teaching his boys the tricks of the trade. As his boys grew older, he got more excited, making sure his boys waited for the big buck then for himself. He loved teaching his boys to turkey hunt and goose hunt. He coached both his boys little league ball teams for several years. He made sure he attended all of their sporting events. He spent every week for years at the Calhoun County Fair helping his boys with their livestock. He always made sure his neighbors driveways were cleaned during the snowy season. He was known for his generosity, and willing to give anyone a helping hand without hesitation. His wife Kelli, sons Taylor and Kyler were the love of his life, and he, the love of theirs. He loved his family and friends, and was well liked by anyone he met. He attended First Wesleyan Church of Battle Creek. He is survived by his loving wife Kelli and sons Taylor and Kyler at home; parents Kenneth and Leona Case of Burlington; sisters Darlene (Doug) Mack and Deloris (Dave) Wasikowski of Burlington; many nieces and nephews, mother-in-law Connie Harrington of Burlington and father in-law Stephen (Sara) Heuer of Dowagiac; and a very special friend Jeff Mack of Burlington. Doris Irene Griffen died peacefully at her Harbor Springs home on Jan. 25, 2009. She was born on Sept. 7, 1927, in Flint, the daughter of Joseph Z. and Clara B. (Jorgenson) Beland. She grew up in Flint and moved to Harbor Springs in the fall of 1941. On Sept. 28, 1944, she married the love of her life Preston C. Mathews and celebrated seventeen years together until his death on Dec. 1, 1960. She married James A. Griffen of Harbor Springs on April 17, 1971, and he preceded her in death on May 6, 1992. Also preceding her in death were her brothers David L. Beland and Edwin C. Beland. |

Dorothy Eva Sinclair, 76, of Blissfield left this earth on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, to join our heavenly Father awaiting her on the brightest star in the heavens. After fighting a long painful battle, she was released from her suffering at long last. As the stars shone above giving a sign that she would now be free, her eternally loving husband of 61 years held her close as she slipped gracefully, painlessly and quietly away. Dorothy was born to Oscar K. Miller and Mary (Conrad) Miller on Nov. 6, 1932, and married “Jack” on Oct. 20, 1947. She is survived by her loving husband, her mother, Mary Miller; five children, Larry Sinclair, Connie (Carl) Bahls, Dottie (Joe) Nix, Dwight (Rosemary) Sinclair and Brock (Erin) Sinclair; more than 70 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; her brother, Melvin (Melanie) Miller; sisters, Karen Salsbury and Patsy (Larry) Drukenmiller. She was preceded in death by her father, Oscar Miller; brother, Robert Miller; sister, Alva Brenke; grandchildren, Robert Sinclair, Diane (Sinclair) Vauw, Ianna Sinclair; daughter-in-law, Ruth Sinclair; and great-grandchildren, Ashley Vauw and Larry James Vauw. Dorothy will always be remembered for her deep love and devotion for her husband and family, kind heart, her strong faith, her baked goods for any function, and her love for helping others. She was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Blissfield, the Boy Scouts of America, the church choir, 4-H Bingo, and Meals on Wheels. She took great pride in her collection of porcelain dolls and her involvement of the Friendly Home Toy parties. EILEEN C. BAIRD CARO Eileen C. Baird, age 73, passed away Monday, January 19, 2009 at St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw, following a brief illness. Eileen was born January 21, 1935 in Sandusky, the daughter of the late Harold & Eliza (Rich) Greenlee. She met her future husband as a young girl at a neighboring cottage on Lake Huron. Eileen was united in marriage with Thomas A. Baird while on spring break from Central Michigan University on March 31, 1956 in Sandusky. Tom and Eileen moved to Caro from Midland in 1978 when they opened Baird's Clothing Store for women's wear. She was also a volunteer kindergarten teacher's aide in Caro for nine years and enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Eileen is survived by her husband of over fifty-two years, Thomas A. Baird of Caro, one daughter; Allison (Tim) Sawyer of Caro, one son; Thomas A. Baird of Traverse City, one grandson; Scott Sawyer of Caro, two sisters; Erdeen Casto, Maxine (Ford) Otis, all of Sandusky, a lifelong friend; Delores McCoy of Sandusky and many nieces and nephews. In honoring Eileen's wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or services held at the Ransford Funeral Home in Caro. Frank Joseph Uguccioni, age 98, of Onsted died Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at Provincial House in Adrian. He was born on June 22, 1910, in Sandusky, Ohio, the son of Lazzaro and Filomena (Filippini) Uguccioni. He graduated from Southwestern High School in Detroit, Mich. He studied music at the Detroit Conservatory and was a violinist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Later, he was employed at the Ford Motor Company and received his Journeymanship as a Tool and Die Maker.  In 1943, he and his family moved to Onsted, and he was employed at the Tecumseh Products for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Tecumseh Products Band and played the saxophone. Frank is survived by his wife, Helen M. (Wilkins) Uguccioni of Onsted; son, David (Alyce) Uguccioni of Brooklyn; daughters, Lenna (Tom) Klug of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Florence (Jim) Ouzts of Cleveland, Miss.; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a twin sister, Florence Selke of Detroit. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rose. Private funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at the Dunn Chapel, Brown-VanHemert Funeral Home in Onsted, with the Rev. Gerald ‘Cork” Burlew, 74, of Quincy, passed away Jan. 23, 2009, at home. He was born Feb. 25, 1934, in Algansee Township, the son of Forest and Goldie (Nesbitt) Burlew. Cork attended the Reading Schools and had been employed at Clark Equipment Co. for 31 years. He also enjoyed farming and gardening, coin collecting, well drilling and mechanical work. He belonged to the Southern Yankee Organization. On June 19, 1953, he married Janice (Adams) and she survives, along with three daughters, Victoria Burlew, Santa Clara, Calif., Patricia (Jack Clutter) Burlew, Sturgis, and Ruth Ann (Rick) Cross, Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two sons, Charles P. Avery, Grand Rapids and John F. (Mary) Burlew, Quincy; two sisters, Velma Vince, Tecumseh and Susie (Fred) Rushford, Victoria, Texas; one brother, Marwin (Loretta) Burlew, Reading; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Harbert Taylor Elliott, age 84, of Hudson, formerly of Jackson, passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 at Heartland Health Care Center in Jackson. He was born on Aug. 18, 1924, in Battle Creek, the son of Elliott and Pearl (Darring) Taylor. Harbert married Arlene Mae Garwood on June 22, 1946, in Jackson. She survives. He worked for Walker Mufflers in Jackson for more than 32 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. Harbert was a big fan of auto racing, both as a participant and a spectator. His favorite driver was Bill Elliott. His other hobbies include golfing, fishing, being outdoors and watching John Wayne movies. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and riding around in his Cadillac with his family. Harbert is survived by his wife, Arlene; six children, Taylor “Lee” (Tammy) Elliott of Jackson, James (Mary) Elliott, Kathleen (Ted Kopp) Bunting, all of Hudson, Mikel (Kim) Elliott of Hillsdale, Christine (Carl) Stoyk of Hudson, Joseph (Karin) Elliott of Osseo; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Harold "Hop" Van Zoeren Lapeer Harold "Hop" Van Zoeren, 80, a lifetime Lapeer resident, passed away Thursday (January 22, 2009). He was born July 18, 1928, in Grand Rapids, to John and Nell (Terpstra) Van Zoeren. He married Evaline Putman. Mr. Van Zoeren proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp then returned to service for the Army. He was active with the local 40/8th group. Harold enjoyed golfing, was an avid hunter, bowling and was a former football player and current big fan. He also was the past president of the Lapeer County Community Credit Union for over 20 years. Harriett L. Perrine, 98, died Jan. 17, 2008. She was the beloved wife of the late Merlin K., loving mother of the Rev. Stephen K. (Connie), grandmother of Jolee (Jim) Kempf, Alicia, Stephen Keskitalo and Karen Bethune, great-grandmother of Jack and Harry Kempf. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Wm. Harriett was the last surviving of nine siblings born to Alfred P. and Carrie Bell Emens of Prattville. Several of her brothers and sisters were distinguished educators with her brother John Emens serving as president of Ball State University. She graduated from Michigan State Normal College, Ypsilanti (now Eastern Michigan University) with a BS degree in elementary education. She did postgraduate work at University of Michigan and Columbia University. Harriett married Merlin K. Perrine on June 23, 1945 at the Hillsdale Arboretum, and he preceded her in death. Although she taught in various locations throughout Michigan, the majority of her career was spent teaching second grade at Jefferson Elementary School in Coldwater. She retired in 1970 and remained active with the American Association of University Women and other civic groups. She and her late husband, Merlin, were dedicated members of Coldwater Wesleyan Church. She loved God, life, her family and friends and will be greatly missed. |

Sontag on June 8, 1957 in Gagetown. She married Chester John Kopin/Kopcinski/Kopec on May 5, 1935, at All Saints Church in Flint. Irene was a homemaker and had also worked in the business office for A&P Grocery. She was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church in Rosebush and St. Charles Catholic Church in Leaton. She was a former member of All Saints, Sacred Heart, Holy Rosary, and St. Leo's Catholic Church in Flint and was active in their choirs. Irene loved gardening, flowers, mushroom hunting, birds, and American Water Spaniels. Irene is survived by her children, Sister Marie Agnes Kopin/Kopcinski, C.PP.S. (Sisters of the Precious Blood, Dayton, OH) who resides in Mt. Pleasant and David Chester Kopin who resides in the family homestead in Flint; and granddaughter, Amy Lynne Kopin of Ann Arbor. There are a number of nieces and nephews residing in the Flint and Caro areas and in Virginia and Arkansas. Irene was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Edmund H. Jason Schrotenboer, age 87 of Zeeland, passed away Friday, January 23, 2009, at Tender Care. He was born September 21, 1921 to Gradus and Dora Schrotenboer in Robinson Township. Jason was preceded in death by his sister, Sarah Nienhuis and his brother Glenn Schrotenboer. He was a member of Second Reformed Church where he served as an elder, deacon and Sunday School teacher.  He was also active in the 6:29 men’s Bible Study.  Jason served on the Boy Scout Council, Troop 21 and mentored boys at the old Youth Center in Zeeland. He was a member of the Grand Rapids Wood Carver Association. He served his country in WWII in General Patton’s Third Army he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and assisted in the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp.  Following his return from military service, he worked at Mead Johnson-Bristol Myers Squibb for 38 years as a lab chemist and manager. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Olga. Marie S. Menzel 1928-2009 Marie S. Menzel, 80, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at Covenant Cooper HealthCare in Saginaw following a brief illness. She was born December 26, 1928 in Gagetown, daughter of the late Adam and Susanna (Petrie) Leiterman. She was united in marriage to Walter Menzel, August 18, 1951 in Bach. He preceded her in death on January 22, 1994. She then married Elmer Shope on May 6, 2007 in Kilmanagh. Marie was a devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. She enjoyed baking, cooking, biking, walking and appreciated helping others and especially loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Martha E. Seeman, 95, of Litchfield, formerly of Galion, Ohio, passed away Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. She was born April 8, 1913 in Galion, Ohio, the daughter of Frank and Josephine (Plumb) Feerer.  Mrs. Seeman had been a bookkeeper and stenographer for the Galion Public Schools and belonged to the Galion Order of Eastern Star and the Methodist Church. She and her husband, Harold, had also lived in Winter Haven, Fla. where she remained active in the Methodist Church.  Harold preceded her in death in 1980. After moving to Litchfield, Martha enjoyed activities at Riverside Apartments as well as sewing and reading.  She also continued her faithful participation at the Litchfield United Methodist Church.  Martha is survived by two nieces, Clara (Carl) Dawson and Mary Shields, of Litchfield. Cremation has taken place and interment at Fairview Cemetery, Galion, Ohio, will take place at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Methodist Church Camp Fund. Marvin Ely, 84, of Manitou Beach and Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Morenci, passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, in Winter Haven, Fla. He was born on Jan. 21, 1925, in Zone, Ohio, the son of Glen and Clema (Winzler) Ely.  On Sept. 14, 1947, he married Marjorie Keller and she survives. He graduated from Fayette High School and attended Michigan State College to study agriculture. He was a farmer in the Waldron area. He bought and sold poultry, delivering them to a Detroit market for seven years. They moved to Morenci in 1952, and helped establish the Keller Supply Corporation and a John Deere farm implement dealership where he headed the parts and bookkeeping departments. They closed the business in 1993, at which time they moved to Manitou Beach. Mr. Ely had a special love for their home on Devils Lake, which they built as a cottage after the 1965 tornado and remodeled into a permanent home in 1994. They bought their first mobile home near Winter Haven, Fla., in 1977, when they started going there two months each year, until they eventually went six months every year. Besides his wife, Marty, Marvin is survived by his children, Karen (Douglas) Londo of McCormick, S.C., Janet (Greg) Sprague of Adrian and Terry (Mary) Ely of Wauseon, Ohio; five grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Ely. He was a member of the Morenci United Methodist Church where he was once Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Trustees and the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, and an associate member of the Haines City, Fla., United Methodist Church. He was Worshipful Master of the Morenci Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, now merged with the Fairfield Lodge #125. He was a 32nd Degree Mason.  Funeral service will be on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Morenci United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Keller and the Rev.  Richard Burstall officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. There will be a visitation on Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. Nadine B. McPherson, 87, passed away on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 at her daughter’s home in Milwaukee, Wisc. of complications due to congestive heart failure. She has been in home hospice. Nadine was born Nov. 6, 1921 in Rising City, Neb. A resident of Coldwater for 56 years, she worked as a secretary for the city clerk for 28 years. After retirement, she worked for the election board for another ten years. A follower of the Lord Jesus Christ for over 50 years, she was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and very involved in the local LWML chapter. Nadine was known by family, friends and neighbors as a serious vegetable gardener and preserver of many fruits and vegetables, which she shared with many. She was also a gracious volunteer caregiver to many. She was married to George L. McPherson for 40 years until his death in 1982. She was the much loved mother of four children: Gloria of Reading, Sandra of Milwaukee, Wisc., Norman (Carla) of St. Joseph and Donna (Phil) Stankewicz of Brighton. She leaves four grandchildren: David (Sharon) Stankewicz, Justin (Jill) Stankewicz, Leah McPherson, and Sarah McPherson; and two great-grandchildren: Zachary Engen and Jacob Stankewicz. Norman W. Stewart, age 77, of Fennville, died suddenly Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at his home. Born July 5, 1931 in Detroit, he was the son of William and Lillian (Woods) Stewart. Norman was a retired machinist from Textron Micromatic in Holland. Most of his life he loved to raise, show and hunt, coon dogs. Surviving is his wife Monica, sons; Mike and Jennifer Stewart of Fennville, Brian and Linda Stewart of Ionia, Norman and Kim Stewart of Mason, Gary Stewart of Lansing, Richard and Judy Stewart of Mason, and Bob and Michelle Waalkes of Boston, Massachusetts, daughter Carmen and Gary Modrzynski of Holland, 20 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, sisters; Jaqueline and Vernon Knight of Fennville, and Vanseeia Olger of Lansing. Ralph D. Anthony, 76, of Prattville, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at his home. He was born April 22, 1932, in Flat Rock, the son of Joseph and Nellie (Clark) Anthony. He married Thelma A. Craig on Sept. 5, 1953, in Bellevelle and she survives. Ralph was formerly of Brownstown Township in Wayne County before moving to the Prattville area in 1994. He retired from Quanta Corporation in Brownstown in 1990 after several years of service and was previously employed at Woodhaven School District in Wayne County for several years. Ralph was also a member of Prattville Community Church. Surviving Ralph besides his wife, Thelma of Prattville are three daughters, Sheryl (Bob) Harold of Southgate, Mich., Roxann (Mike) Derby of Monroe,  and Julia (Al) Partain of Prattville; one son, Ralph D. (Dawn) Anthony Jr. of Prattville; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene (George “Tex”) Morris of Louisville, Tenn.; three brothers, Joe (Betty) Anthony of Gladwin, LeRoy (Alice) Anthony of Romulus and Bill (Marita) Anthony of Taylor; several nieces and nephews. Richard J. Arno Lapeer Richard J. Arno, 80, of Lapeer (formerly of Royal Oak) passed away January 18, 2009. He was born November 18, 1928, in Detroit, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Challener) Arno. In 1952, Mr. Arno founded Arno Paint & Wallpaper, Royal Oak, owning and operating it for 40 years. He was very involved with the Royal Oak community. He was past president of the Royal Oak Optimist Club, serving in the Royal Oak Zoning Board of Appeals for 24 years - 15 years as Chairman. Richard was a 25 year member of the Stage Crafters Community Theatre, as well as being very active in the Baldwin Theatre restoration. Robert W. Macco Lapeer Robert W. Macco, 62, of Lapeer (formerly of Nadeau, Mich.) passed away Tuesday (January 27, 2009). He was born January 15, 1947, in Menominee County, to William and Genevieve Macco. He married Bonnie King on May 4, 1968 in Spalding, Mich. Robert served his country in the U.S. Army - his service time included one tour of duty in Vietnam. He worked at Pontiac Motors, retiring in 2003 after 38 years of service to the company. He enjoyed hunting, camping, gardening, golf and woodworking. He also enjoyed watching Westerns on TV. Above all, Robert enjoyed his family, who are left to cherish his memory. Robert S. Hall, 66 of Hillsdale, formerly of Goetzville, Mich. passed away Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 at the Hillsdale Community Medical Center. He was the son of Wayne and Beatrice Hall born Aug. 2, 1942 in Alma. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, June Hall (Van Deusen); son, Karl (Shellie) Hall of Hanover; daughter, Connie (Brian) Combs of Nevada; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Pat (Don) Smith; brother, Gary (Marty) Hall of Pleasant Lake, Mich.;  numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his son, Robert Hall Jr.; his parents; sister, Cheryl Moats. Robert entered the U.S. Air Force right after graduating from Northwest High School and later he went to work for the City of Jackson Fire Department until his retirement in 1989. He was an avid hunter, and fisherman. He enjoyed working with wood, and making trails on his property. He was dearly loved by his family and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Mr. Hall is at the Watson Funerall Chapel where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday where the Rev. Carl J. Benes will be officiating. Interment will be at Horton Cemetery. Ronald Allen Richards, age 52, of Manitou Beach passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009. He was born July 24, 1956, in Tecumseh, to Phillip Donald and Marguerite Pearl (Sipes) Richards. Ron served in the U.S. Army. On Nov. 20, 1979, he married Lynne McCloskey and she survives. Ron was employed by Pilkington Corporation. Ron enjoyed hunting, biking, fishing, hanging out with his grandsons, and horseback riding. In addition to his wife, Lynne, he is survived by two sons, Jason Richards and Myleigh of Manitou Beach and Dustin Richards and his wife, Jamie, of Jerome; one brother, Charley Richards of Fort Wayne, Ind.; four sisters, Donna Friess and her husband, LeRoy, of Onsted, Bonnie Hunt and her husband, David, of Adrian, Clara Ruttkofsky and her husband, Robert, of Tipton and Susan Hunt and her husband, Sheldon, of Apache Junction, Ariz.; two grandsons, Tyler James and Cameron Alan; 11 nieces and nephews and several grandnieces and nephews. On Sept. 16, 1950, she married Edward Knierim Jr.  He preceded her in death January 1987.  Thelma was employed with the Blissfield Schools for 23 years. Timothy Lee Johnson Lapeer Timothy Lee Johnson, 58, of Lapeer, passed away Saturday (January 24, 2009). He was born August 6, 1950, in Flint, to J.C. and Doris Niel (Hinken) Johnson. He married Clair Mari Briggs on July 16, 1976 in Lapeer County. Tim proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He worked for General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 2004. Vern Knapp, Jr., 80, of Coldwater passed away on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009. Vern was born May 7, 1928 to Vern and Estella (Sharp) Knapp in Quincy. He graduated from Quincy High School, then married Joyce (Weiler) in 1951, she survives. Mr. Knapp was an independent businessman in the Quincy area. During his career, he started, owned and operated several businesses. He served in the National Guard in Coldwater and was a member of the Elk Lodge #1023 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Vern belonged to the Masons, Mt. Vernon 166, and the Moslem Shrine out of Detroit, Southfield. After retiring from the business world, he dedicated his time to childcare. He was the head of childcare for the Shriners Hospital, serving Branch and surrounding counties until the last few years of his life. Vern is survived by his children Susan (Brian) Mittelstadt of Coldwater, Kathy Neville of Livonia, Chris Knapp of Coldwater and Tonia Wiser of Quincy, seven grandchildren; Mike, Dan, Jenna, Kara, Jake, Zack and Max. One sister survives, Lila Miller of Coldwater and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters Iola Wilcox, Donna Strane, Lena Quick and Nora Duffer. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be directed to the Shriner Children’s Hospital. |

William “Bill” E. Macicak, age 76, of Holland, died Wednesday,  January 21, 2009, at  Hospice House of Holland.   Bill was born June 27, 1932 in Chicago to Joseph and Ludmilla (Vojynski) Macicak and came to Fennville at age 16. Bill married the former Anne M. Caperton on January 27, 1957.  He had been employed by the Mervenne Beverage Co. for the past 39 years and had been in beer sales for 50 years. Bill was an associate member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Elks Lodge and many other local organizations.   Bill is survived by his wife, Anne; daughters, Betsy (Ed) Owczarzak of Laketown Twp., Susan Macicak of Austin, TX; sons, Joe Macicak of Chicago, IL, and Mike Macicak and Carmen Retzlaff  of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Jesse Macicak and Elan Retzlaff; sisters, Lillian Laketek of Grapevine, TX, Lorraine Dluhy of Chicago, Theresa and Murph Palenik of New Port Richey, FL, Helen Supak of Springfield, MO, Frances and John Kopele of Chelsea, MI; a brother, Joseph Macicak of Chicago.  Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Olson.   The family will receive friends Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Mulder Chapel of Dykstra Life Story Funeral Home, 188 W. 32nd St., Holland.  Memorial services will be  2:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Wilma E. Bradford, age 91, of North Adams passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 at the Country Living Adult Foster Care Home in Hillsdale. She was born April 16, 1917 in White Pigeon, Michigan the daughter of Fred L. Fuller and Nola (Rudy) Fuller. On May 22, 1937 she married Dale S. Bradford in Auburn, Ind. and he preceded her in death in 1983.  She was a graduate of Osseo High School in the class of 1935 and she attended Jackson Business School. She was a member of the North Adams United Methodist Church and the Coterie Club of North Adams. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Curtis Schmitt of North Adams; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Sherry Bradford of North Adams; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Wilma E. Bradford will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Paul Hane officiating. A private interment will take place in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams following the service. The family will receive friends for visitation at the funeral home noon until the time of the service Tuesday. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the North Adams United Methodist Church or to Hospice of Hillsdale County.   |

Zachary Charles English, age 15, of Burr Oak, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at his home.  Zach was born April 16, 1993, in Kalamazoo, a son of Charles and Jodi (Barsha) English. Zach had lived most all of his life in the Colon area and was currently a sophomore at Colon High School where he had participated in cross country, wrestling, football, track, soccer, and musical and theater.  He was also a member of the St. Joseph County 4-H and enjoyed fishing.  He attended the Colon Baptist Church and had participated in their AWANA program.  Zach is survived by his father, Charles English III of Colon; mother, Jodi and Gary Stricker of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; a brother, Charles English IV; grandparents, Tom and Harriett Rowlson of Burr Oak, Charles Jr. and Andrea English of Battle Creek and Tom and Carol Barsha of Trout Creek, Mont.; and an aunt, Shirley English of Lansing.  The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today  at the Schipper Funeral Home Ltd. in Colon.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Zachary Charles English will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Colon Baptist Church with David J. Farrell officiating. Cremation will follow.  If desired, the family suggests memorials be made in memory of Zach to the Colon Athletic Department to be used for the cross country and wrestling program |
