Guy Catto

CATTO, Guy Scot - The distant sound of the Great Bagpiper has called Guy Scot Catto home. Guy Scot Catto, of Menomonie, unexpectedly passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2009, one day before celebrating his 32nd wedding anniversary. Scot was born February 4, 1950, to M.W. "Scotty" and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bishop Catto, in Alpena, Michigan. A graduate from Milton College with a degree in biology, he continued his education by pursuing a Master's Degree from U.W. Eau Claire. His interest in economics led him to real estate and financial planning. Scot and Angela Massman were married in Eau Claire, WI, in 1977. A devoted father, Scot nurtured three wonderful sons; Chris, Sean, and Clai. Throughout the course of their lives, Scot never missed any of their sporting or academic events. Scot passed on his love of the outdoors to his "boys" from shooting, hunting, skiing, tennis, and golf. Perhaps most synonymous with Scot was his love for the Scottish Highland bagpipes. A member of Chippewa Valley Pipes and Drums for over 10 years, he competed with the band and in numerous solo competitions. His poetic mastery of the pipes could be heard in any number of weddings, funerals, and festivals. His philanthropic ways spread quietly throughout the Menomonie community. A servant on numerous community boards, Scot's influence helped further Menomonie and her citizens. Scot was a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church's family. The Rotary Club, UW Stout Foundation and the Greater Menomonie Health Board are just a few of the foundations Scot served over the years. His dedication to these organizations brought honor upon himself and his family, and reflected great credit upon his community. Scot was very proud to be an American. His patriotic love of country was the foundation of who he was, and his quiet, humble, and steady ways earned him unprecedented respect by his family and friends. Scot is survived by his mother Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Catto of Oscoda, Michigan, Angie, his wife, his sons Christopher Scot (Laura) of North Carolina, Sgt. (USMC) Sean Hepburn, of South Carolina, and Clai Bishop of Menomonie; and dear cousins Patricia Catto, Jean Hildreth, and Ellen-Grey "Binker" Bunday. His father, M.W. "Scotty" Catto, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 at Grace Episcopal Church E4357 451st Ave. Menomonie (next to Pinewood Golf Course), with Father Dale Klitzke officiating. Burial will be in Michigan at a later date. There will be a visitation from 3:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. The family suggests memorials to Grace Episcopal Church or charity of donor's choice in Scot's name. To express condolences online, please visit obituaries at www.olsonfuneral.com

Willard Van Singel, 90

Tuesday, January 20, 2009 4:57 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Willard J. Van Singel, age 90, a citizen of the Greatest Generation, died on Monday, January 19, 2009.  He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 61 years, Jane; his sisters, Gladys Alles, Jeanette Elzinga; and his brother, Robert Van Singel.  Willard is survived by his children, Karen (Dan) Van Zalen, Mary (Tom) Niewiek, John (Linda) Van Singel, Gordon (Anne) Van Singel; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his brothers, Harris (Connie) Van Singel, Gordon (Tena) Van Singel; his sister-in-law, Gertrude (Russ) Fifer.  He is also survived by his loving wife, Josephine DeJong Van Singel, and enjoyed having a second family in the DeJong children.  Willard was born July 4, 1918, a child of The First World War, whose character was shaped by the Great Depression and by service to his country during The Second World War in the European Theatre.  Willard was a son of Byron Center and always had a strong desire to give back to his community.  Willard joined the small staff of Byron Center State Bank in 1938.  For 56 years as a community banker, he took great delight in helping local families and businesses get established and prosper.  Due to his dedication and leadership, including decades as President, the bank grew from a three person office to a nationally recognized community bank.  In his retirement years he continued to find opportunities to contriubite to the development of his beloved community.  He had the pleasure of watching the progression of the Van Singel Farms development.  Willard and Jane donated property on which his alma mater, Byron Center High School, could build its new building; which, in turn, became a catalyst to upgrade facilities throughout the Byron Center School District.  We wish to express sincere appreciation to Willard's caregivers.  The staff at Metro Health Hospital, especially ER and Level Four, expertly cared for Willard and his family.  The staff at Railside Living Center readily welcomed him into their family and he often spoke of their kindness,  and Mary Woltjer, with her tender devotion, has been a true blessing to Willard and Jo.  A time for relatives and friends to visit with Willard's family will be  from  2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at  Cook Funeral Home in Byron Center, 2067  84th St. SW.  Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Heritage Christian Reformed Church, 3089  84th St. SW.  In honor of Willard, contributions may be made to South Christian High School or Byron Community Ministries.  The family welcomes memories and messages in their guestbook online at www.cookfuneralservices .com.
