Betty Jane Winship, 91, of Holland, died on January 1, 2009 in her home at Freedom Village. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on March 31, 1917 to Lester and Eliner (Nell) Jaqua and was married to James (Jim) Winship on September 16, 1939. Betty is survived by her four loving children and their spouses; James Kent Winship (Jaclyn), Karen Ann Howells (Ben), David McRae Winship (Martha deJarnette) and Wendy Lou Smith (Dennis); as well as six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; two sisters, two brothers, and a grandson. Times were never all that easy for Betty Jane Jaqua. Born during wartime, her family moved to Detroit from Toledo to nourish a tent and awning business that struggled in the tough economic times of the Depression. Her younger brother died at age three, and her mother followed when Betty was sixteen. Through early loss and deprivation she gained the personal strength and determination that served her the rest of her life. In a short story titled ‘First Love’ Betty described the early days with her future husband, Jim Winship. Her dreaded three mile after school walk to a cold, empty home became more bearable when shared with this energetic young man. He gave her hope to carry her through dark days, and together they married and built a family based on love and their faith. Betty and Jim raised their children to appreciate music, travel, and self-reliance. Betty was an active 4-H leader and teacher, enriching the lives of countless young people. In retirement Betty and Jim lived in Alaska for two years doing lay-ministry work for their church. Once the children had moved on to lives of their own, Betty explored her interest in creative writing. Enrolled in writing classes with students who were decades her junior, she found her voice in the form of short stories and biographical vignettes from her rich personal history. She periodically published her stories in bound collections as gifts for family and friends with titles like ‘Let’s Talk’, ‘Once Upon a Memory’ and a thorough family biography, ‘The Tree’; a collection of stories from her personal experience or from listening to her elders. A memorial celebration in honor of Betty’s life will be held for friends and family at Freedom Village, 145 Columbia Avenue, Holland, Michigan on Saturday January 17 at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland, 270 Hoover Blvd, Holland, Michigan  49423.  Arrangements are by Notier-Ver Lee-Langeland Funeral Chapel, 315 E. 16th St. Holland.  An online registry is available at www.notierverleelangeland.com. |
