CATTO, Guy Scot - The distant sound of the Great Bagpiper has called Guy Scot Catto home. Guy Scot Catto, of Menomonie, unexpectedly passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2009, one day before celebrating his 32nd wedding anniversary. Scot was born February 4, 1950, to M.W. "Scotty" and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bishop Catto, in Alpena, Michigan. A graduate from Milton College with a degree in biology, he continued his education by pursuing a Master's Degree from U.W. Eau Claire. His interest in economics led him to real estate and financial planning. Scot and Angela Massman were married in Eau Claire, WI, in 1977. A devoted father, Scot nurtured three wonderful sons; Chris, Sean, and Clai. Throughout the course of their lives, Scot never missed any of their sporting or academic events. Scot passed on his love of the outdoors to his "boys" from shooting, hunting, skiing, tennis, and golf. Perhaps most synonymous with Scot was his love for the Scottish Highland bagpipes. A member of Chippewa Valley Pipes and Drums for over 10 years, he competed with the band and in numerous solo competitions. His poetic mastery of the pipes could be heard in any number of weddings, funerals, and festivals. His philanthropic ways spread quietly throughout the Menomonie community. A servant on numerous community boards, Scot's influence helped further Menomonie and her citizens. Scot was a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church's family. The Rotary Club, UW Stout Foundation and the Greater Menomonie Health Board are just a few of the foundations Scot served over the years. His dedication to these organizations brought honor upon himself and his family, and reflected great credit upon his community. Scot was very proud to be an American. His patriotic love of country was the foundation of who he was, and his quiet, humble, and steady ways earned him unprecedented respect by his family and friends. Scot is survived by his mother Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Catto of Oscoda, Michigan, Angie, his wife, his sons Christopher Scot (Laura) of North Carolina, Sgt. (USMC) Sean Hepburn, of South Carolina, and Clai Bishop of Menomonie; and dear cousins Patricia Catto, Jean Hildreth, and Ellen-Grey "Binker" Bunday. His father, M.W. "Scotty" Catto, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 at Grace Episcopal Church E4357 451st Ave. Menomonie (next to Pinewood Golf Course), with Father Dale Klitzke officiating. SIDNEY NADOLSKY, age 95, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009, after a brief illness in Holland Hospital.  He is survived by his 3 children, David (Shanna) Nadolsky of Rogers City; Karl (Amy) Nadolsky of Holland; and Rosemary Nadolsky-Henning of Chicago; 6 grandchildren, David (Judy) Nadolsky of Sterling Heights; Erik (Amy) of Rogers City; Elizabeth (Todd) Hincka of Rogers City; Dr. Karl Nadolsky of Portsmouth, VA; Spencer Nadolsky of Blacksburg, VA; and Alexandra Sydney Henning of Chicago; 8 great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Jane Merren of Greenville; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Virginia Nadolsky (1913-1987). Born in New York City February 14, 1913, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants Louis and Rose (Belkin) Nadolsky, Sid primarily grew up and worked in Grand Rapids.  He graduated from Grand Rapids South High School in 1931 (a classmate of the late President Gerald Ford), serving as the class Poet Laureate in Perpetuity.  He attended Grand Rapids Junior College before going on the road as the bassist in a 12 piece swing band during the Big-Band era. He married another 1931 South High graduate, Virginia Fisher, and together they raised their 3 children in Grand Rapids, where he was a long-standing member of the Grand Rapids Symphony and the Garfield Park Summer Orchestra, as well as conducting his own 5 piece dance band, The Sid Nadolsky Orchestra. The group played regularly from the early 40s through the mid 70s at the Rowe Hotel, the Charcoal Inn of the Pantlind Hotel (now the Amway Grand Plaza), Sunshine Hospital and countless weddings and private parties.  Every New Year’s Eve his band could be found playing dance music for the Grand Rapids Alcoholics Anonymous party.  He was a proud member of the American Federation of Musicians, the ACLU, the NAACP, Amnesty International, the Southern Poverty Law Center and Americans United for Separation of Church and State.  He was actively involved in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and, as a tireless advocate of peace, was staunchly opposed to the war in Viet Nam. He performed in Grand Rapids Circle Theatre productions of “Call Me Madame” and “A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” before he and the late Mrs. Nadolsky moved to Rogers City in the late 70s. While residing in Rogers City, Sid continued playing music for patients at the Rogers City Hospital and Tender Care; the Senior Citizens’ Center; and various other Rogers City civic functions.  He worked in his son David’s pharmacy until age 86 and spent as much time as possible cross-country skiing and, through the autumn of his 93rd year, playing tennis.  He was a board member of the Presque Isle District Library; the Michigan Humanities Council; and active with the Rogers City Theatre, most recently revisiting his role as Erroneous in “A Funny Thing...Forum.”  When interviewed by the Alpena News on the event of his 90th birthday, he was asked to reveal his secret to longevity and vitality. He quipped, “Pick your parents right.” Always an independent thinker with a profound commitment to social justice, he wrote a weekly topical poem (calling it “doggerel”) for the Presque Isle County Advance and contributed generously to various social causes that champion the poor and the disenfranchised.  He moved to Holland, MI in July of 2008, where he lived with son Karl and Amy Nadolsky until his death January 14.  While residing in Holland, he remained physically active and mentally engaged by playing his bass; riding a stationary bicycle and lifting hand weights daily; reading voraciously; attending G.R. Symphony and Jazz Band concerts; avidly following the Beijing Olympic games and the 2008 presidential race. On November 4, he was proud to cast his vote for Barack Obama.  He also enjoyed his final fall going sailing with family and delighting in the beauty of Western Michigan sunsets over Lake Michigan.  Sid and his joie de vivre will be dearly remembered and sorely missed.  The Nadolsky family welcomes memories and messages in their on-line registry at www.lakeshorememorial.com. Contributions may be made in Sid’s name to the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Presque Isle District Library, or a charity of your choice. A memorial celebration of his life is being planned and will take place this summer in Rogers City.      |

Mr. W. Perry Price of River Rouge, Mich., passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 27, 2008. Although in declining health, his passing was unforeseen and hidden from view. His blessing was to leave quickly; and to those who remained, numbness in the heart took place. Perry is lovingly remembered by his wife, Joy (Thomas), and his daughter, Jackie Freeman (Gene), and family of Onsted, Mich. Perry was born and raised in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, in the Spring Creek area. His family consisted of six brothers and three sisters. He had nothing but praise for his Christian mother and a father who was a hard-working farmer raising crops to care for and feed his large family. (Perry and his brother, Frank, married sisters, Joy and Rita, respectively.) Perry and Joy had one child, a daughter, Jackie Denise. At her wedding, Perry had to give his daughter away when she found her true love and life’s partner, Roy (Gene) Freeman, but Perry never gave her away in his heart. She was his pride and joy.  Anyone who knew Perry knew about his Jackie. His grandsons, Jas (Sandy), Joe (Carla) and Jon (Cari), were the love of his life. Perry and Joy spent many happy and carefree hours and days at the Freeman Farm with their boys. Perry’s two great-granddaughters, Jane (Jas and Sandy) and Abyona (Joe and Carla), made his beautiful blue/green eyes light up with happiness and love. They made him feel special and as Janie said, “I can make Perry happier than happy.” What a profound statement from a 6-year-old child. Perry was a disabled World War II veteran and belonged to several veteran organizations. He was a member of the Rouge Free Will Baptist Church. Good Southern Gospel Music brought many hours of enjoyment and listening pleasure to him (especially if Joy was playing the piano). Perry retired as manager of the National Life Insurance Company in Southgate, Mich. He and Joy were able to visit many far-away and exciting places and lands because of his salesmanship abilities. He was a Mason and a Shriner. Perry was a past president of the Southgate Kiwanis Club. He served as a member of the River Rouge Board of Education. Perry was active in local, state, and national political issues and campaigns. He served on the Public Safety Commission for the city. Recreation time was spent on various golf courses and relaxing poolside and/or riding the paddleboat at Freeman Farm. In addition to his wife, Joy, his daughter, Jackie, and family, Perry is survived by brothers, Fred (the late Edna) Price and family, and Frank (Rita) Price and their family. In addition to his Price family, Perry is survived by many wonderful and caring people, including his 93-year-old aunt, Arlean, sister-in-law Mattie and her family, nieces and nephews, cousins and loads of people Perry was happy to call a friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dolph and Isabelle Price; brothers, Floyd, Warren, Ford and Ray; and sisters, Mary, Annie and Larnie.  To say an earthly good-bye, a gathering was held on Saturday, Nov. 29, at Michigan Memorial Park. Perry does not want to be remembered with sadness. He wants to be remembered as a man who loved life — God, country and family. He would say: “Every moment is a gift” — enjoy the moment. |
