AMMA SNYDER LEXINGTON Amma Snyder, age 97, died Monday, January 12, 2009 in Port Huron. She was born December 11, 1911 in Saskatoon, Sask., Canada, daughter of the late Paul and Eva Krivoshein. She and Earl E. Snyder were married February 1934 in Wayne. He died in 1978. Amma was a seamstress who taught sewing at area trade schools. She was a member of the Bishop Sewing Center. Surviving is her daughter; Judy (Tom) Stockman of Lexington, son; Jerry (Joan) of Walled Lake, one brother; Amos Krivoshein of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was born July 26, 1920 in Detroit to the late James and Caroline (Brabenec) Schauer. She married Clifford E. Christie Sr. On March 2, 1946, he preceded in death March 30, 2005. Ann was an employee of the Lincoln Park Sears store for many years. She volunteered at one of the soup kitchens in Detroit, loved to read, and was known as the family care giver. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law; Corky and Linda Christie of Forester Twp., one daughter; Ms. Barbara Linden of Fla., two grandsons; Jeff (Jennifer) Linden of Fla., and Tim (Tracy) Linden of Texas, four great grandchildren; James, William, Lieve, and Annie, also one brother; Richard (Yvette) Schauer of Southgate. Audrey McFarland-Riggs, age 51 of North Adams, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 at Bixby Medical Center in Adrian. She was born on June 28, 1957 in Detroit to William R. and Dorothy C. (Jennings) McFarland. She married Garry E. Riggs on Dec. 30, 2006 in Homer and he survives. Audrey lived her early life in Taylor, then at age 15 she moved to Onsted. She attended Eureka Heights Schools in Taylor and then she graduated from Onsted High School in 1975. Audrey worked for Penrickton Center for the Blind Children for 13 years. She then worked for Helping Hands in Jackson, then for Foote Hospital in Jackson. She was then employed at Hillsdale Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale for the past year. She enjoyed raising her children, enjoyed flowers and bird watching. Surviving besides her husband Garry are three sons, Sami Salameh of Dearborn, Ibrahim Salameh of North Adams, Garry Riggs, Jr. of Adrian; three daughters, Nadia Salameh of North Adams, Angela Salameh of North Adams, Merissa Riggs of Hillsdale; four grandchildren, Garry Riggs, III, Alex Lopez, Angel Riggs, Harmony Riggs; her parents, William and Dorothy McFarland of North Adams; one brother, Dale W. His military career began with the Army after high school. He also served in Germany, Vietnam and at TACOM Army Arsenal in Warren, MI and earned the rank of Master Sergeant before joining the ANG. In addition to his wife Jennifer Lindsay, he is survived by a stepdaughter, Heather Lindsay, a daughter, Jennifer Carman, as well as brothers Raymond Carman and Daniel Buchholz, a sister, Judith Espitia, and an aunt, Georgiana Guy, all of Milwaukee or the Milwaukee area. |

Calvin “Cal” Beaubien, age 83, of Adrian passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility where he had been under the constant care of his loving family. Cal was born March 4, 1925, in Milan, Mich., the oldest son of Leo and Rose (Serin) Beaubien. During the Korean War he served in the Army. On April 30, 1949, Calvin married Anna May Pelham in Hudson, Mich. Annie, his wife of more than 50 years, preceded him in death in 2000. Cal was well-known in the Adrian community. For 44 years he owned and operated Cal’s Amoco, retiring in 1991. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he counted the offerings for 67 years. Cal was a member of the Knights of Columbus #1665, Annis-Fint Post #1584 of the VFW, Loyal Order of the Moose #1034 and the Farmers Antique Tractor and Engine Association. He was also a former Scout Master and delivered Meals on Wheels.  Most precious to Cal was his family. Survivors include his seven children, Cathy Beaubien (Mark VanSteenkiste), Pat (Steve) Mills, both of Adrian; Mike (Sherrie) Beaubien of Manitou Beach, Dan (Becki) Beaubien, Barb (Mark) Stewart, Steve Beaubien and Tom (Cindy) Beaubien, all of Adrian; 10 grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Leon (Bertie) Beaubien of Hudson; and two sisters, Marie (George) Libs and Catherine (Ray) Pelham, both of Adrian. In addition to his wife, Cal was preceded in death by an infant son, James; a grandson, Ryan Mills; and two sisters, Rita Beaubien and Ethel Simpson. The Funeral Mass for Cal will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Robert Schramm presiding. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Carl Peppiatt, age 96, of rural Quincy, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 14, 2009.  Mr. Peppiatt was born June 2, 1912 in Cherry Hill, to Albert and Dora (Scott) Peppiatt. He resided in Michigan for the majority of his life and became a minister of the Assemblies of God denomination in 1946.  He was a member of the Hillsdale Assembly of God, where he served as chaplain. He also belonged to the Historical Society, Sheriff’s Association, national and local American Association of Retired Persons and he was Chaplain of the Golden Agers at the Hillsdale Senior Center. On Nov. 6, 1934, he married the former Opal McIntyre and she preceded him in death in 2007. Survivors include daughter Dorothy (James) Hixson of Phoenix, Ariz., sons Paul (Shirley) Peppiatt of Quincy and Daniel Peppiatt of Coldwater, nine grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, brother Kenneth Peppiatt of White Lake and sisters Mary Hamilton of Kalamazoo, Yvonne (Charles) Ward of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Betty (Thomas) Withrow of Fort Myers, Fla. He was also preceded in death by sisters Joann Huntley and Helen Howard. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at the Hillsdale Assembly of God with Pastor Dennis Haarer officiating. Charles William “Chuck” Gumpp of Burton, formerly of Hillsdale passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at his home. He was born Oct. 31, 1978 in Jackson the son of his father, Thomas Gochanour; his mother, Brenda (Bowditch) Gumpp and his second father, Gerold “Gary” Gumpp. He is survived by his mother, Brenda Gumpp and her companion, Earl Barker of Grand Blanc; his father, Thomas Gochanour of Hillsdale; grandparents, Frank and Roberta Day of Osseo; two half-sisters, Jennifer Wood and Heidi Gochanour; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his second father, Gary Gumpp and his grandmother, Florence Gumpp. Chuck attended Hillsdale High School and received his G.E.D. He continued his education at Western Michigan University and graduated on Dec. 11, 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management and a minor in Economics. He worked as a manager at Rite Aid in Almont and he was a member of the Eagles Lodge. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Charles William “Chuck” Gumpp will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale at 2 p.m. Saturday. Edith Staal, a treasured member of our family for 99 years, was looking forward to her 100th birthday in March, yet passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, January 14, 2009, at Appledorn Living Center.  Born in Holland, Edith was the eldest of eight children born to Anna and Jacob Vande Bunte, who had immigrated to Holland from the Netherlands during their youth. With her brothers and sisters, Edith helped her parents work the farm and raise her younger siblings while also attending school. In 1930, Edith married Benjamin Staal of Zeeland and together they raised three daughters. They especially enjoyed their time together with family and friends at their home on Lake Michigan which was a centerpiece of their lives for many years.  Edith is preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Staal; daughters, Shirley Slater and Janice Rottschafer; and grandson, Mark Benjamin Slater.  Edith is survived by her daughter, Mary and Robert Komejan of DeLand, FL; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;  five great-great-grandchildren; son in-law, Peter and Linda Rottschafer of West Olive; sisters, Ella Hoezee and Betty and Bill Northouse, both of Hudsonville; brother-in-law, Harold and Mary Staal of Florida; several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services for Edith will be Monday, January 19, 2009, 11:00 a.m. at Harderwyk Christian Reformed Church.  Rev. Michael De Vries will officiate. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery. Visiting hours will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Esther Ann Doe, age 90, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away early Thursday morning, Jan. 15, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born Oct. 1, 1918, in Detroit, a daughter of the late Remy F. and Mary Ann (Vervondel) D’Haene. Esther had resided in Sturgis since 1958, coming from Flint. On Oct. 23, 1937, she married Henry L. “Hap” Doe in Detroit. He died Sept. 27, 2004. She was an active member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis where she was a member of the Altar Society. She was also a member of the Klinger Lake Country Club and the Klinger Lake Country Club Bridge Club. For many years Esther volunteered her time with the Sturgis Hospital Loan Guild. She enjoyed reading and playing cards and was happiest when she was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are: three sons, Jerry (Vicki) Doe of Estero, Fla., Robert Doe of Las Vegas, Nev., and Michael (Debbie) Doe of Sturgis; a daughter, Joan “Joannie” Doe of Sturgis; six grandchildren, Cathy M. Doe of Benson, Ariz., Connie Ann (Mike) Ware of Benson, Ariz., Chris Doe of Naples, Fla.; Alex M. Doe of Boston, Mass., Sara A. Doe of Sturgis and Kayla E. Doe of Sturgis; and eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes–Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Gertrude M. Roestel 1915 - 2008 Gertrude Magdalena Roestel, 93, Pigeon, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Home Sweet Home Retirement Manor in Pigeon. She was born in Pigeon on December 24, 1915, the daughter of the late J.F. Otto and Anna (Meyer) Rathje. She graduated as Salutatorian for the Pigeon High School class of 1934. On October 23, 1937 she was united in marriage to Henry Edward Roestel at St. John's Lutheran Church, Berne. They were married for almost 69 years when he preceded her in death on October 6, 2006. Gertrude was a homemaker throughout her lifetime. She enjoyed spending time with her family, as well as cooking and baking. She was a member of the McKinley Farm Bureau and the McKinley Happy Homemakers Extension. She was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Berne, where she enjoyed church activities, especially the Women's Society and the Ladies Aid. Henry T. Weber 1929-2008 Henry Theodore Weber, 79, Harbor Beach passed away on December 14, 2008. He was born on January 16, 1929 in Harbor Beach. He married Deanna (Krimsevig) and resided in Huber Heights, Ohio, Westerville, Ohio and West Bloomfield. Upon his divorce, he resided in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Port St. Lucie, Fla., Chesaning and at the Veterans Home in Grand Rapids. Henry served in the Navy from 1951-1954 on the USS Chivo, where he received a Navy Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He attended Dayton University in Dayton, Ohio, where he received his bachelor's degree in Marketing. He was employed as a captain for the Great Lakes Steamship Co., as a plant manager for Burdett Oxygen of Detroit, as owner of Beeline Oxygen in West Palm Beach, Fla. and AA Pools of Lake Park, Fla. He loved polkas, fishing and was an avid golfer, even working for PGA of Port St. Lucie, Fla. as a tee master and ranger during his retirement years. He is survived by four children; two siblings, Martha Crofcheck, Troy and Paul Weber, Mount Clemens and four grandchildren. Hugh D. Blair, 91, of Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Drews Village Green in Hillsdale. He was born Sept. 20, 1917, in Reading Township, to Thomas and Goldie (Masters) Blair. He was married May 31,1941, to Ann Buckness and she preceded him in death Dec. 12, 2000. Hugh lived his entire life in Hillsdale County and retired from Allied Products Corporation after 57 years of service. Hugh had a wonderful sense of humor and was liked and admired by all who had the opportunity to know him. Surviving are a son, Gerald (Nancy) Blair of Ivins, Utah; two grandsons, Steven (Jane) of Portland, Oregon and Thomas (Erika) of Salt Lake City, Utah and five great-grandchildren, Alexander, Katherine, Mackenzie, Audrey and Brandon. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother. Irene Godlove, born on Sept. 23, 1920 to Benjamin and Jennie Perkowski, passed away on Dec. 27, 2008. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Tyrus; children, Linda (James) Brayton of Mason, David (DaeSun) Godlove of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Janis (Mark) Munro of Camden; grandchildren, Amy Schuster, John Dunham, Victoria Munro and Victoria Godlove; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Phillips (Harriet); and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Jessie and Ted Magnuson, Helen and Frank Stirton, Kenneth Dunham. Irene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and enjoyed gardening, reading, crosswords, playing cards and bird watching. She worked at the Regent Restaurant with her three sisters and also at Sparks Corp. and then stayed at home to raise her family. James Henry “Hank” Wooster age 73, of Branch, Mich., and formerly of Sturgis, passed away Jan. 12, 2009, at home. He had been in failing health. Hank was born Feb. 3, 1935, in Bethel, Mich., the oldest son of the late James H. Wooster and Gladys (Decker) Wooster. He was a resident of Orland, Ind., where he graduated from Orland High School in 1953. Hank attended Purdue University for a short time. He married Erma Harris on Feb. 27, 1971, in Orland. Hank was the owner of the Burr Oak Shell station, a volunteer firefighter and police officer for Burr Oak. He was an employee at Boland Tire in Sturgis and Three Rivers, NW Welding in Sturgis and the St. Joseph County Road Commission in Centreville until his retirement in 1997. Most will remember Hank because of the hook that he wore on his right arm because of an accident he had as a teenager. Hank loved fishing, train collecting, small engine work and wood and metal working. Surviving Hank are: his wife, Erma (Harris), daughter of Donald E. Harris and Virginia Harris of Centreville and Eloise Kottenbrock of Burr Oak; his three sons, James P. Wooster of Ohio, Jody L. He was born on April 29, 1970, in Bryan, Ohio and was the son of Todd Keith and Linda (Haynes) Smith. J.T. was previously employed at Gendron in Pioneer, Ohio. He attended Lakeview Church in Merry Lake, Michigan and enjoyed playing pool and remodeling homes. Surviving Jeff are two daughters, Jessica Justus and Lindsay Messer; his fiancee, Tina Roehrs and her children, Tenika, Trevor, and Katelynn all of Pioneer; his mother, Linda Smith of Pittsford, three sisters, Chris Smith of Osseo, Shalene Smith of Hillsdale and Ellen (Norman) Osborn of Pittsford; one brother, Bruce (Cindy) Haynes of West Unity, Ohio; maternal grandparents, Bill (Joyce) Haynes of West Unity; two aunts, Wanda Smith of Allen, Washington and Kay (Tim) Price of Bryan; two uncles, Skip Wilson of Hillsdale and Billy Joe (Lisa) Haynes of Alvordton, Ohio; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, father, two children, Shawna and Kyle Pike, several aunts and uncles. A graveside service for Jeff will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Waldron Cemetery with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. John N. Briggs, age 74, of Oscoda, formerly of Tecumseh and Prudenville, Mich., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at Tawas St. Joseph Hospital. He was born in Howell, Mich., on Nov. 13, 1934. John graduated from Hartland High School in 1952 and married the former Joyce M. Fordyce on July 25, 1953, in Highland, Mich. He later served and was honorably discharged from the United States Army. John then pursued a career as an electrician with Ford Motor Company that spanned more than 30 years until his retirement as a supervisor of general maintenance in 1983. He was a member of the N.R.A and enjoyed hunting and traveling. John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce Briggs; two sons, Stephen (Vicki) Briggs of Raleigh, N.C., and Paul (Joan) Briggs of Blissfield; daughter, Terri (Kerry) Westfall of Milan; grandchildren, Stephanie, Lindsey, Kristina, Jason, Allison, Julie, Savannah, and great-grandchildren Micajah, Giavonnie, Landen and Kalli. Joyce A. Conley Lapeer Joyce A. Conley, 56, a lifetime Lapeer area resident, passed away January 9, 2009. She was born June 12, 1952, in Flint, to Bobbie and Arlene (Underhill) McClelland. She married Chuck R. Conley on June 1, 1985 at the German Church, Lapeer. Mrs. Conley was very active at the American Legion Post #16, loved bowling and was a very social person. KARL R. HOWARD MARLETTE Karl R. Howard, age 70, life long resident and farmer of Marlette, went home to be with the Lord Friday, January 9, 2009 at Morton Plant Hospital in Largo, Florida. He was born July 26, 1938 in Marlette, son to the late David and Lena (Ingram) Howard. He graduated from Marlette High School in 1956 where he served as class president. He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1957 to 1963. He married Marlyn Bilger on October 3, 1959 in Port Huron. Karl was a long time farmer and carpenter in the area. He was a life member of the C.M.A. Bethel Church, where he was an Elder, Sunday School Teacher, Song Leader and Board Member. He also served on the Marlette Board of Education, Sanilac I.S.D. Board of Education, Marlette Oil & Gas Board, the Teen Ranch & Youth for Christ Boards and was a member of the Sanilac County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed hunting, working, church and most of all, his family. He is survived by his wife; Marlyn, sons; Mark (Aleda) Howard of Marlette, Alan (Becky)Howard of Marlette, daughter; Wendy (Jose) Berez of Tampa, Florida, brother; Karen (Roger) Thomassen of Springfield, Missouri and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia North. Lester J. Bunce, 91, of Coldwater died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home. The service will be Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Fr. Stephen Bartlett from St. Marks Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. Lester was born April 22, 1917 in Montpelier, Ohio to Charles and Florence (Walters) Bunce. He married Phyllis Harris on April 14, 1940 in Coldwater. Les graduated from Coldwater High School where he was listed in the Athletic Hall of Fame for his abilities in football, baseball and basketball. He served in the National Guard from 1934 to 1937 then from 1943 to 1946 as a sergeant in the US Army during WWII. He worked in construction for many years before going to work at General Motors in 1951 as a Millwright and heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Bunce was a member of the Coldwater Elks. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, playing golf and was an avid fisherman. He traveled all over, mostly to Canada, to find good fishing. Les thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent with his family, especially with his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters Ruth Breckenridge, Mildred (Green) Stolp and Frances Bonfiglio. Lester is survived by his wife Phyllis, his brother Eldon (Marian) Bunce of Sturgis, his sister Audrey (Walter) Heidenreich of Naples, Florida and many nieces and nephews. Maria Rocha Montemayor, 96 years old, formerly of Adrian, departed this life peacefully on Jan. 15, 2009, at the Gallatin, Tenn., residence of her daughter, Trinidad Montemayor. At her side were her two devoted daughters Trinidad Montemayor and Viola Jontz. She was born in Waco, Texas, on Sept. 20, 1912, and moved to Adrian in 1946. Mrs. Montemayor was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. When she was 75 years old, the mother of her grandchildren Anthony and Destiny Montemayor passed away. She then dedicated herself to helping her son, Ernest, raise them. She and Destiny moved to Hendersonville, Tenn., in June 2002 where they lived in their own home until September 2008. Mrs. Montemayor worked various jobs throughout her life and retired from Tuttles of Tecumseh. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Martin Montemayor, Sr., her parents, all of her siblings and her granddaughter Kelley Jontz Maxey. She is survived by sons Martin (Diane) Montemayor of Ann Arbor, Mich., Melecio (Elvira) Montemayor of Milwaukee, Wis., and Ernest Montemayor of Adrian, Mich.; and daughters Trinidad Montemayor of Gallatin, Tenn., and Viola (William) Jontz, Jr. of Hendersonville, Tenn. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mary M. Saxton, 85, of Blissfield passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Tecumseh Place in Tecumseh, Mich. Mary was born on June 2, 1923, in Ogden Township, the daughter of Merle and Lillian (Harrington) Porter. She was married on Oct. 27, 1945, to Robert W. Saxton, who preceded her in death in 1995. Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Blissfield. Surviving are three children, David (JoAnn) Saxton, Peggy (Tom) Nieman and Paula Saxton, all of Blissfield; one brother, Eugene Porter of Adrian; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Blissfield, with the Rev. Bob Bidwell officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Blissfield. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. The funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. The Rev. Stephen Fillion, pastor of the St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City, officiated. Burial was made in the church cemetery., Arrangements were handled by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. |

Matthew Paul Kruse, 29, of Central Lake, passed away Dec. 23, 2008. Funeral services were held Dec. 27, 2008, at the First Congregational Church Central Lake. He was born in Coldwater on Sept. 21, 1979, to Catherine (Litwaitis) and Ken Kruse. Matt (“Booty”) graduated from Central Lake High School in 1998. He was also a former resident of Quincy. Matt’s love of the outdoors was evident by the time he spent pontooning, fishing, hiking and enjoying campfires. He also held a deep passion for children and their playfulness. Matt spent much time working with his dad in construction. Besides his parents, he is survived by grandma “Jo-Jo” Joyce Blair of Coldwater, grandma and grandpa Kruse of Eastport, aunt Mone (Bob) Barraw and family, aunt Lori (Litwaitis) Cutler and family, numerous other aunts, uncles, and cousins who all deeply loved their “Matt-Matt,” and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his grandpa Ray Litwaitis, great-grandma and grandpa Dahnke, great-grandpa Kruse and great-granny and grandpa Adams. Onalee M. Hopkins, age 91, of White Pigeon, Mich., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born Aug. 24, 1917, in Preble, Ind., a daughter of the late Glenn and Juanita (Henry) Marshall. Mrs. Hopkins had resided in the Sturgis and White Pigeon area since 1955, coming from Otsego where the family lived for four years, and prior to that she had lived in Decatur, Ill., for several years. Her early life was spent in LaSalle, Ill., where she graduated from LaSalle High School with the class of 1934. Mrs. Hopkins continued her education at the University of Illinois. Following the raising of her sons she returned to college in 1964 at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where she received her bachelor’s degree in education and in 1971 her master’s degree also in education. On March 25, 1939, she married Lawrence Hopkins in LaSalle, Ill. Following nearly 20 years of dedication to the young people of Sturgis she retired from the Sturgis Public Schools, teaching most of those years at the Middle School. Mrs. Hopkins was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Klinger Lake Country Club in Sturgis. She was always willing to give of her time to others. Some of her involvements included serving on the Community Mental Health Board, Sturgis Council of the Arts, Parent Teacher Association and several of the guilds at the Sturgis Hospital. She loved to play Bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs. Surviving are: her loving and dedicated husband of 69 years, Lawrence Hopkins; a son, Randall (Pamela) Hopkins of Madison, Wis.; three grandsons, Jonathan (Kristen) Hopkins of South Burlington, Vt., Gregory (Laura) Hopkins of Walla Walla, Wash., and Lawrence G. Hopkins of Eugene, Ore.; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Glennlyn “Lindy” Huling of LaSalle, Ill.; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Marshall Hopkins. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial services celebrating the life of Onalee Hopkins will be held at a later date to be announced. The Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, is handling arrangements. Ralph “Red” William McFadden, Jr., 85, of Tekonsha, passed away at the Laurels of Coldwater on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009. He was born Aug. 21, 1923 in Marshall to Ralph William McFadden, Sr. and Mignon Jane Wilrich. He married Helen Shawlcraft in July 1952 in Angola, Ind. Ralph was born and raised in Marshall and he lived in the Marshall/Tekonsha area all of his life. He attended a country school south of Marshall. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.  Ralph ran a milk route and hauled cars in the 50’s and he retired from Eaton’s in 1981 after 32 years. He is survived by: children Sharon (Larry) Granger of Coldwater, Mike (Carol) Sowle of Choctaw, Okla., Patti Hudson of Marshall, Connie Bradshaw of Quincy, and Wendy McFadden of Tekonsha; brothers Bruce (Margaret) McFadden of Battle Creek, Joe (Marie) McFadden of Marshall and Walt (Pat) McFadden of Battle Creek; 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, his parents, son Charles Sowle and grandchildren Lori and Tracy. He belonged to the Comancheros 4-H Club, Branch County Saddle Club, and the Branch County Sheriff’s Posse. Ralph spent a lot of time braking horses when he was younger. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking and camping at Hidden Valley Campground near Sturgis. Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009 from 3-5 p.m. at Putnam’s of Tekonsha. He married Mary Georgia Kokales on September 17, 1955 in Ann Arbor. A loving and devoted wife for 53 years, Mary preceded Ray in death on August 4, 2008. Also preceded in death by his parents and dear sister, Phyllis Ham and brother-in-law, William G. Ham, all of Greenville, MI. Ray graduated from Greenville High School in 1936, Culver Military Academy 1938, and attended the University of Michigan. Captain Ray J. Tower proudly and valiantly served his country during World War II as a captain in the 774th Tank Battalion where he earned the bronze star for courage and bravery. Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Greenville, with Rev. Jerry Jones officiating, with Full Military Services by the American Legion Post #101 of Greenville. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Roger A. Burnham, age 66, of 70410 Scott Road, White Pigeon, Mich., died suddenly on Jan. 12, 2009, at his home. He was born Aug. 25, 1942, in Sturgis, a son of Shirley L. and Leona L. (Kline) Burnham, and resided in the White Pigeon area since 1985. On June 4, 1966, he married Judy D. Stears in Sturgis. He retired from Sutton Tool Company in Sturgis in 2002 and had been employed at Lasco Industries and Continental Can Company, both of Three Rivers. After his family and gardening, he most enjoyed bowling, along with hunting, fishing and trapping. Surviving are: his wife, Judy Burnham of White Pigeon; a daughter Michelle (James) Kauffman of Burr Oak; a son, Todd (Melissa) Burnham of Parker, Colo.; grandchildren, Lori and Jacob Kauffman of Burr Oak, Tucker and Roarke Burnham of Parker, Colo.; mother-in-law, Dorothy Stears of Sturgis; brothers, Cleon (Shirley) Burnham of Three Rivers and Michael (Neva) Burnham of Bronson; sisters, Shirley Dodgson of Three Rivers, Rosalee (Fritz) Dicken of Colon and Christina (Jim) Fisher of Athens; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Roland J. Cross, 74, of Allen, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at his home. He was born Sept. 16, 1934 in Hanover to Clemary and Odessa Irene (Strait) Cross. He was first married to Donna Buelow and she preceded him in death. He married Alma Powell Sept. 22, 1979 and she survives. Roland was a former employee at Walker Manufacturing in Jackson. He drove milk truck for several years. He started a lime business in 1962 and also did excavation work. Roland retired from farming in 1997. Surviving besides his wife Alma are four children, twins, Roxanna Munsell of Portsmouth, Va. and Roland D. (Martha) Cross of California, Tamara n(George) Martin of Portsmouth, Va. and Abby Cross and fiance Landon Mills of Camden; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Martha (Clyde) Stiles of Spring Arbor and Genieve Creamens of Jackson; a brother, Gerald Cross of Pullman, Mich.; mother-in-law, Irene Powell of Jonesville; four sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Andrew; granddaughter Brittany Kay Munsell; two brothers and two sisters. SHIRLEY ANN HUNT LEXINGTON Shirley A. Hunt, age 82, of Lexington, died Thursday, January 8, 2009 in her home. Born January 26, 1926 in Detroit to the late Charles A. and Bernice (Hill) Hunt. Dear sister of the late Jean E. Ecker and Naomi K. Ford. Dear aunt to several nieces and nephews. Dear friend of the late Ruth C. Ritscher. Shirley retired in 1982 from Michigan Bell Telephone Co. (Ameritech) as a Staff Manager - training after 35 years of employment. Her main interests were her career and golfing. She was an active longtime member of Lakeview Hills Country Club and Resort, Lexington, and several times was Women's Club Champion until her retirement at age 70 from competitive play in 1993. During her playing career she had 5 hole in ones. She continued to play recreational golf in two leagues until her demise. 85, passed away peacefully January 14, 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was born April 13, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Barney and Marion Fenton Smith. He served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. Bob was a home builder and developer in the Detroit area with Sullivan-Smith Realty Co., moving to Arizona in 1978. "RC" was preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty in 2006, and by his siblings, Craig Smith, Milton Smith and Lois Robinson all of Michigan. He is survived by his son Levi (Barbara) Smith of West Bloomfield, MI. Daughters Bobette (Byron) Siegel of Scottsdale, AZ and Elizabeth A. Smith of Peoria, AZ; six grandchildren, Noah, Chelsea and Asa Smith, and Matthew, Steve and Lindsay Siegel. He will be missed by his companions, Cyndie Spencer and Isabel D'Angelo, as well as many friends. Sharron G. Franklin, 56, of Litchfield, passed away Jan. 10, 2009, at her residence. She was born March 26, 1952, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., to J. R. and Bertha (Whaley) Collins. She was raised in the Coloma area and moved to this area about three years ago. She held a position as a cashier. She worked for Lowe’s in Benton Harbor, Jackson and Portage. For 13 years she also worked at Chardon Rubber in St. Joseph. Sharron was a member of Matee Indian Tribe. She enjoyed Native American crafts, camping, fishing and sitting by moving waters. Sharron especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Survivors include three daughters, Tasha Fairbanks of Litchfield, Belinda and Michael Knight of Homer and Sharon and Scott Lucas of Jonesville; one son, David Fairbanks of Benton Harbor; two sisters, Shirley Warner and Sheila Smart, both of Coloma; three brothers, Paul “Gene” Mathis of Schoolcraft, twin Larry Collins of Stevensville and Dennis Collins of Coloma; and 11 grandchildren, Kelsey, Josh, Samantha, Trevor, Dillon, David, Devyne, Corey, Alyssa, Carter, and Kaden. Shay L. Rose, age 32, of Tecumseh, died unexpectedly Jan. 14, 2009, in Kansas City, Mo. He was born Aug. 26, 1976, in Adrian, Mich., the son of Chistopher L. Rose and Lee Ann Yonts. Shay attended both Tecumseh and Clinton schools. He was currently employed by Visteon, at the Saline Plant. Shay enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and friends. He was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by all. In addition to his parents, Shay is survived by two brothers, TJ Lee Rose of Tecumseh and Cody Rose of Tecumseh; grandparents Chuck and Betty Clucas of Deerfield; nephew Hudson Rose of Tecumseh; and numerous aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, James R. Sr. and Hattie Rose. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at J. Stanley G. Kain 1918 - 2009 Stanley G. Kain, 90, Owendale, passed away Friday, January 9, 2009 at Tendercare of Cass City. He was born on February 25, 1918 in Owendale to the late Norman and Bertha (Heck) Kain. He is a 1936 graduate of Owendale High School. Stanley owned and operated his own tax business for many years until his retirement. He enjoyed playing cards and watching sports on the television. He was a former member of the Owendale Lions club. He is survived by two sisters, Beatrice Jones, Bay City and Eleanor Giardina, Ocala, Fla.; niece, Pat (Tony) Enderle, Owendale; nephews, Ron Reinhardt, Owendale, Terry (Jane) Jones, Kawkawlin and Wayne (Patricia) Jones, Clarkston and numerous great-nieces, nephews and cousins. FRANKFORT — Rosemary E. Wuerthele (nee Shedron), 93, of Frankfort, passed away peacefully on Jan. 14, 2009. She was born at home in North Ridgeville, Ohio, on July 17, 1915. On Nov. 24, 1938, she married Edward F. Wuerthele, who died in 1984. The couple lived in Columbia Station, Ohio, before moving to Frankfort in January of 1951.Rosemary was active in the Benzie County Extension and a 4-H leader for over 10 years. She loved to travel, garden, sew, crochet, knit, read, do crossword puzzles and bake. She was well known for her homemade pies and beautiful flower gardens. She also enjoyed family get-togethers, which always included a lot of pinochle.Rosemary was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt and friend, and a most remarkable woman. She is survived by her six children, Margaret (Peg) Slaback (Laverne) of Janesville, Wis., Loretta Stoddard of Sanford, Fla., Fred (Leanne) of Janesville, Wis., William of Frankfort, Mark of Sedalia, Colo., and Charles of Lansing; daughter-in-law, Ann Wuerthele of Otsego; and their families, including 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; nephew, John Morscher (Mary Ann) of Upper Arlington, Ohio; nieces, Mary Lou Kulsick (Edmund) of Sun City West, Ariz., and Suzanne Loyd (Peter) of Medina, Ohio.If desired, donations in Rosemary's memory may be made to the local food pantry, Benzie Area Christian Neighbor, 2839 Benzie Hwy., Benzonia, MI 49616. Verdith "Evelyn" Risdon Lapeer Verdith "Evelyn" Risdon, 82, of Lapeer since 1968, passed away January 7, 2009. She was born December 8, 1926, in Thomas, Mich., to John and Birdith (Churchill) Fenner. She married Gernard "Charlie" Risdon on April 7, 1946 in Ortonville. Mrs. Risdon was a member of Deerfield Church of Christ for 37 years and a longtime member of T.O.P.S. #888. Evelyn was active with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for many years, because two of her daughters were diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. She won Jack Bailey's Queen for a Day in 1963, asking for wheelchairs and other items to help her daughters. Wilfred M. “Bill” Wing, age 9l, of Englewood, Fla., and formerly of Colon, Mich., passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at the Englewood Hospice House in Port Charlotte, Fla.  Bill was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Fulton, Mich., a son of the late Maurice and Elma (Shook) Wing. He moved to Englewood, Fla. in 1999.  He attended Colon Schools and graduated with the class of 1935, and he graduated from Tri-State University in 1939 with an engineering degree.  Bill also had served in the U.S. Army Air Force.  On July 15, l967, he married Betty Hawk, in Grand Rapids. Bill owned and operated the former City Electric business in Colon for 27 years.  Bill was a member of the Good Shepherd Church in Englewood and had attended the Colon Baptist Church in Colon.  He was a 45-year member of the Colon American Legion.  Surviving are: his wife, Betty of Englewood; a son, Ronald Wing of Colon; daughter, Rita (Kenneth) Brandys of Wellston, Mich.; stepson, Terry Crane of Englewood; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Marcella Miller of Plainwell and several nieces and nephews.  Bill was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and a daughter-in-law, Judith Wing.  The family will receive relatives and friends from noon-1  p.m. on Tuesday at the Schipper Funeral Home Ltd. in Colon.  Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. with Pastor Robert Baxter and David Farrell officiating.  Private burial will take place in the Leonidas Cemetery. There will be a funeral service 11AM Thursday at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel for Winifred Morley, of Youngstown, who passed away Sunday morning at Briarfield Manor Nursing Home. Winifred was born September 17, 1923 in Flint, MI, a daughter of the late Vern and Bessie (Alexander) Nelson. Prior to dedicating her time to raising her family, Winifred worked at Boeing Air Craft Plant during WWII and was a waitress. She enjoyed gardening, and crocheting and most of all was devoted to her family. Her husband, Paul Morley, Jr., whom she married September 22, 1962, passed away January 9, 2005.
