ALMA MAE HOOD MARLETTE Alma Mae Hood, age 101, of Marlette, died Sunday, January 04, 2009 at McKenzie Memorial Hospital in Sandusky, Michigan. She was born November 21, 1907 in Standish, Michigan the daughter of the late Charles and Emma (Winters) Westphal. She spent her early years in the Marlete area, graduating from Marlette High School in 1924 and attending college in Mt. Pleasant. She was a member of the Marlette First United Methoist Church, she enjoyed oil painting, playing bridge, volunteer work and reading. After her marriage to Leland Hood on October 30, 1925, the couple moved to Detroit where they lived for many years, before returning to Marlette in 1965, he died on November 23, 1983. She is survived by two daughters; Barbara Burgess of Westland,Sue & (Jim) Brydon of Marlette, 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a son in law; John Burgess, a brother; Basil Westphal and a sister; Gladys Terry. Funeral services were held at the Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette with Rev. John Allan officiating. Burial was in the Marlette Cemetery. ARTHUR FRANK WHEELER MARLETTE Arthur Frank Wheeler, age 85, of Marlette, died Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Sanilac County Medical Care Facility in Sandusky, Michigan. He was born January 24, 1923 in Marlette, Michigan the son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Schneider) Wheeler. He was a lifelong area resident and farmer. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII. Arthur married Loanne E. Scholz on November 22, 1951 in Marlette, she died on June 18, 2005. Amos A. Elmore, age 66, of Adrian passed away unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 5, 2009.  Amos was born in Mississippi on May 22, 1942, the son of Allen and Lela (Flower) Emore, Sr. For many years he worked at Dura Convertible Systems. He also worked for Washovia several years, retiring in 2004. Amos loved his family. He looked forward to Tuesday nights when he watched newly released movies with his family. He also enjoyed playing cards. Amos is survived by his four sons and their mother, Amos and Anthony, both of Albion; Jason and Matthew, both of Adrian; Caroline Elmore, also of Adrian; fianceé, Cynthia Smith, and her daughter, Sheronda Smith, both of Adrian; three grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his siblings, Queen Esther (Arthur) Sailes of Toledo, Allen (Peggy) Elmore, Jr. of Adrian, Robert Elmore of Detroit, Annie Quinn of Adrian and Willie (Alexis) Elmore of Toledo; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Destiny Lee Elmore; a sister, Rosie Jones, and a brother, Edgar Elmore. The funeral service for Amos will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home with Bishop Robert Bernard officiating. Betty J. Lammon, 81, of 770N - 075E, LaGrange, Ind., passed away, Dec. 14, 2008, at Life Care Center of LaGrange surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 11, 1927, in Toledo, Ohio, a daughter of Russell K. and Martha P. (Noel) Field, and moved to LaGrange in the early 1990s. On Oct. 19, 1968, she married Clifford S. Lammon in Toledo. He preceded her in death on April 12, 1981. Betty had worked as a secretary  in the automotive field in Toledo for many years. At one time she was also a stock car driver for the company where she worked. She was a former member of the American Legion Post #512 Ladies Auxiliary in Toledo, and she was a former member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis, Mich. A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother she also loved crocheting, gardening and bingo. Surviving are: two daughters, Susan and Jim Koehler of Shipshewana and Nancy Russell and Harry Pellegrene of Sturgis; two sons, Thomas and Judy Allred and Gary and Tammy Allred, both of Toledo; a sister, Eileen Otting of Massachusetts; two brothers, Russell and Ann Field and Bob Otting, both of Toledo; five grandchildren, Julie and Phillip Holderman of Lake City, Fla., Scott Jones of Kokomo, Ind., Lisa Allred, Crystal Pringle and Gary Allred II, all of Toledo; and 12 great-grandchildren. Charles William “Chuck” Gumpp of Burton, formerly of Hillsdale passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at his home. He was born Oct. 31, 1978 in Jackson the son of his father, Thomas Gochanour; his mother, Brenda (Bowditch) Gumpp and his second father, Gerold “Gary” Gumpp. He is survived by his mother, Brenda Gumpp and her companion, Earl Barker of Grand Blanc; his father, Thomas Gochanour of Hillsdale; grandparents, Frank and Roberta Day of Osseo; two half-sisters, Jennifer Wood and Heidi Gochanour; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his second father, Gary Gumpp and his grandmother, Florence Gumpp. Chuck attended Hillsdale High School and received his G.E.D. He continued his education at Western Michigan University and graduated on Dec. 11, 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management and a minor in Economics. He worked as a manager at Rite Aid in Almont and he was a member of the Eagles Lodge. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Charles William “Chuck” Gumpp will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale at 2 p.m. Saturday. Clarence L. Osentoski 1934-2008 Clarence L. Osentoski, 74, Caseville, died Friday, January 2, 2009 at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Hills after a long battle with cancer. He was born June 1, 1934 in Ubly to the late Louis and Anna (Pawlowski) Osentoski. On October 24, 1953, Clarence married Donna J. Popour of Harbor Beach at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church. After marrying her, he attended a railroad engineering school in Minnesota and worked as the station manager at the Wixom Depot. He graduated from Ubly High School in 1952 In 1954 he returned to Huron County to open Osentoski Farm Equipment in Harbor Beach with his father. As the business grew to include dealerships in Bad Axe and Pigeon, Clarence moved his family to Caseville in 1968. This family owned business is now run by the third generation of the Osentoski family. He was active throughout Huron County. Clarence had been the Chairman of the Huron County Road Commission, a member at Scenic Golf and CountryClub and St. Roch Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing cards, sports and traveling. He is survived by his wife, Donna; children, Donald (Lana), Pigeon, Timothy (Sharon), Bad Axe, Karen, Caseville, Thomas (Kari), Bay City, Diane Bass, Clarkston, Richard, Caseville and Daniel (Rose), Caseville; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and sisters, Betty Hill, Ariz. and Doris (Charles) Crowl, Warren. Creta Faye Bigelow, age 75 of Pulaski Township passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009 at home under the loving care of her family. She was born March 11, 1933 in Sayersville, Ky. the daughter of Arthur and Betty (Barnett) Hurley. She married Leonard Bigelow, Sr. on April 7, 1950 and he survives. Besides her loving husband of 58 years, Creta is also survived by her children, Beverly (Quincy) Osborne of Pulaski Township, Leonard W., Jr. (Lynn) Bigelow of Highland, Ervin (Karen) Bigelow of Temple, Texas, Nancy (Dana) Poynter of Michigan Center, Raymond (Rose) Bigelow of Breckinridge, Gloria Miller of Concord; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Joann Hurley. Creta enjoyed hunting with her husband, sewing, crossword puzzles and her family. She was preceded in death by her son Bruce Bigelow in 1991, one brother and two sisters. Dale  Brown, age 62, of Constantine, Mich., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at the Bronson Methodist Hospital in  Kalamazoo. He was born in Coldwater, Mich., on June 25, 1946,  a son of  William and Charlotte (Sours) Brown.   On February 27, 1970, he married Marjorie Shirk in Coldwater. Dale worked as a roll setter at Simplex paper company in  Constantine from 1972 to 2001. He enjoyed reading the Bible, fishing and working on cars and with wood. Surviving are: his wife, Marjorie Brown, Constantine; daughters, Julie Long of Litchfield, Teresa (Robert) Johnson of  Mendon and Brenda Brown of  Constantine; sister, Alice Crossgrove, White Pigeon; brothers, Richard Brown of Coldwater and  Lee Brown, Sturgis; grandchildren, Anthony Long, Mickey Long, Robert Dale Long, Zyler Duane Johnson, William Brown and Ashley Fox; and many nieces and nephews. Darryl D. Gottschalk, age 69, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Tuesday evening, Jan. 6, 2009, at his home. He was born July 23, 1939, in Jonesville, Mich., a son to the late Marlin and Flossie (Smith) Gottschalk. Darryl’s early life was spent in Coldwater where he graduated from Coldwater High School with the class of 1957. Following his graduation from high school Darryl moved to Sturgis where he resided the remainder of his life. On Sept. 30, 1989, he married Verna Mae Kilen at the First Church of God in Sturgis. She died June 19, 2005. He retired from Rood Industries in Sturgis in 2001 after 20 years of employment when the business closed. Prior to joining Rood Industries he was employed by Means Service in Sturgis for over 20 years and had also worked at Ross Laboratories in Sturgis for several years. Darryl was a veteran of the National Guard, earning the rank of Sergeant. He was a past member of B.P.O.Elks #1381. He enjoyed rifle target shooting, bowling, playing and participating in tournaments and fishing, especially fishing for bass. For many years Darryl fished in local bass tournaments and circuits including the B&W Bass Circuit and RJ’s Bass Circuit. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his children, Darren (Lisa) Gottschalk of Sturgis, Kelly Gottschalk of Howe, Ind., Hollie Butler of Odell, Ill., and Douglas Rosson, Jr. of Cary, Ill.; five grandchildren, Skyler, Laci, Ashlee, Kyle and Trent; three sisters, Marilyn (Joe) Otis of Coldwater, Darlene (Fred) Loetz of Sturgis and Shila (John) Potts of Angola, Ind.; a brother, Jerry (Linda) Gottschalk of South Whitley, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.  Preceding him in death were his parents, wife; a son, Darryl Dean Gottschalk Jr.; and a nephew, Michael Otis. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. The Rev. Sam Maddox of the Light & Life Wesleyan Church in Three Rivers will officiate. Full military rites will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Posy #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. The Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis is handling the arrangements. She was born in Pigeon on July 23, 1951, the daughter of Jack H. Sr. and Marilyn (Jurgess) Paul. Diana had a kind and gentle heart. She loved life and laughed a lot. She enjoyed being a Girl Scout, going outdoors to the woods and swimming. She liked school, drawing, coloring, puzzles and her dolls. She especially enjoyed Christmas and her birthdays, traveling with her parents, visiting at Grandma Doyle's, eating brown sugar and butter sandwiches and being called "Lucy." She loved her Lord Jesus. She is survived by her father, Jack H. Paul, Sr., Cottonwood, Ariz.; two sisters, Pattie (Jim) Hammett, John Day, Ore. and Mary (Rick) Hinson, Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Clare (Amy) Paul, Dayton, Ohio and Jack (Wendy) Paul, Lake Orion and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon, with Rev. Michael T. Sawicki officiating. Donald D. Moore, 73, of Girard, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Largo Medical Center in Largo, Florida. The service will be held on Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Girard United Methodist Church with Pastor Bruce Kintigh officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Girard. Visitation will be held Sunday, January 11, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Don was born April 2, 1935 in Quincy to David and Leola (George) Moore. He married Lola Potter on June 26, 1955 in Coldwater. Don was a longtime resident of Girard where he enjoyed a successful career and lifelong passion of farming. He began farming with his father and continued through the generations with his son and his grandson. He also worked for 20 years at the Gambles Warehouse in Coldwater, from which he eventually retired. Mr. Moore went on to serve as Girard Twp. Treasurer for many years. He was an active member of the Girard United Methodist Church and very involved with the Branch County 4-H Fair, serving as superintendent of the amphitheater for 40 years. He had a great love of antique tractors, many of which he showed at the fair and in several local parades. Don and his wife Lola enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida. When he wasn’t farming, Don enjoyed golfing, deer hunting, fishing, tending to his large gardens and visiting with friends, always ready to lend them a hand in anything they needed. Most of all, he and Lola felt blessed by the love and time they shared with their close family, especially their children and grandchildren. Don is survived by his wife Lola, his daughter Diana Huntley of Coldwater, his son Dennis (Debra) Moore of Girard, his grandchildren Gretchen Huntley of Orlando, Fla., Heidi (Scott) Gottleber of Lansing, Derick Moore of Girard, Natasha Stanton of Battle Creek, Melissa (Danny) Barrand of Orland, Ind., Erwin Stanton of Coldwater, great grandchildren Rhianna, Toby and Macy, his special friend — his dog Lucky, his brother Fred (Bonnie) Moore of Coldwater and sister Ruthann (Leonard) Robinson of Whittemore. He was born March 12, 1919 at home in Evergreen Township to William and Mary (McComb) Bullock. He married Emma Edith Kitchin June 30, 1942 in Emma's parents home in Evergreen Township. Ernest was a crop and dairy farmer. He worked for a few years for Active Industries in Elkton and for Gerden Industries in Marlette. Ernest retired as a carpenter working commercial construction after about ten years. He was a member of Mizpah Missionary Church for many years. Ernest enjoyed rabbit hunting in his younger years and he enjoyed woodworking. Ernest is survived by his wife; Emma, children; Donald (Virginia) Bullock of Decker, David (Penny) Bullock of Saginaw, Dale (Fay) Bullock of Sandusky, Diane K. Eleanora V. Rees 1922-2008 Eleanora V. Rees, 86, Bad Axe, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. Elsie M. Snyder of DeLand, Fla.,  passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Florida Hospital in Deland.  Mrs. Snyder, a homemaker, was born in Jackson Heights, New York.  She lived for many years in Centerport, Long Island and Sturgis,Mich., before retiring with her husband to DeLand, Fla.  Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William F. Francis  W.  Yockey, age 88, of Bronson, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009 at the Sturgis Hospital. He was born May 5, 1920 in Jamestown, Ind., son of Forba Fern and Wava (Straw) Yockey. He married Wannetta Stumpf on April 4, 1945 in Angola, Ind.  Francis was a hired farm hand for the Carpenter, the Wall and the Schafer families before owning his own farm in southern Branch County. He had also worked for the former Darling Company and retired from Grumman-Olson in Sturgis in May 1985. He enjoyed fishing and working in his spare time and attended the First Baptist Church of Bronson. Surviving are his wife Wannetta and his sister Lucille Kirkpatrick of Marion, Ind. He was preceded in death by his brother Orville Yockey and his sister Lenora Patterson. Gertrude Tressler, age 91, of Tecumseh died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at Charlotte Stephenson Manor, Adrian,  with her daughters at her side. She was born April 16, 1917, in Franklin Township, Mich., the daughter of Asa Sherman  and Isabelle (Arnold) Rogers. She was married to Richard Joseph Tressler on June 12, 1937, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 1981. Gertrude was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh where she was an honorary member of the Rosary Altar Society. She was also a member of P.E.O., D.A.R., Past Regents Society of the D.A.R., and the National Guild of McGown Rug Hookcrafters. Gertrude is survived by two daughters, Mary Jo (Patrick) Fero of Glen Rock, Pa., and Kathy (Jon) Hoover of Adrian; four grandchildren, Michael Fero, Michelle Orwig, Amy Burns and Greg Hoover; and eight great-grandchildren, Ryan, Kev, Alec, Erin, Megan, Grant, Drew and Addison. She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Mary Catherine; two brothers, Wellington and Arnold; and three sisters, Berniece, Ruth and Margaret. He was married May 31,1941, to Ann Buckness and she preceded him in death Dec. 12, 2000. Hugh lived his entire life in Hillsdale County and retired from Allied Products Corporation after 57 years of service. Hugh had a wonderful sense of humor and was liked and admired by all who had the opportunity to know him. Surviving are a son, Gerald (Nancy) Blair of Ivins, Utah; two grandsons, Steven (Jane) of Portland, Oregon and Thomas (Erika) of Salt Lake City, Utah and five great-grandchildren, Alexander, Katherine, Mackenzie, Audrey and Brandon. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother. Memorial services for Hugh Blair will be 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 at the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville with Pastor Gary Oliver officiating. Irene Godlove, born on Sept. 23, 1920 to Benjamin and Jennie Perkowski, passed away on Dec. 27, 2008. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Tyrus; children, Linda (James) Brayton of Mason, David (DaeSun) Godlove of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Janis (Mark) Munro of Camden; grandchildren, Amy Schuster, John Dunham, Victoria Munro and Victoria Godlove; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Phillips (Harriet); and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Jessie and Ted Magnuson, Helen and Frank Stirton, Kenneth Dunham. Irene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and enjoyed gardening, reading, crosswords, playing cards and bird watching. She worked at the Regent Restaurant with her three sisters and also at Sparks Corp. and then stayed at home to raise her family. Per her request, cremation has taken place, and no services will be held. Mr. Reason was a self-employed farmer, truck driver and handyman. Born April 22, 1939 in Oxford, Mich., he was the son of C.B. and Bea (Thompson) Reason. Jeanette Halstead, age 96, of Adrian died peacefully, with her family at her side, on Dec. 26, 2008, in Okemos, where she had been residing for the last two years. Born Oct. 1, 1912, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, she was the second of six children born to Mercy (Corns) and Wallace Trowbridge. Her early years were spent in Springfield, Ohio, and later in Sturgis, where she pursued a career in cosmetology. She graduated from the Riggs Beauty School in Hilisdale and continued there as an instructor. She earned the first cosmetology license issued by the State of Michigan. In 1933, she married Lynn Halstead of Adrian. She established a beauty shop on West Maumee Street which she operated for nine years. Jeanette and Lynn then opened the Tip Top restaurant and later the Waffle Shop on South Main Street next to the YMCA. In the 1950s, she and her husband began developing properties in Adrian, northern Michigan and Canada. She earned both her real estate license and broker license to aid their venture. The family enjoyed their summers on Torch Lake, where Jeanette continued spending each summer with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jeanette was a devoted mother and excellent homemaker. A skilled cook, seamstress and gardener, she created a lovely home and shared her appreciation of nature with her four children. A resolute conservationist, her “three Rs” were Repair, Reuse and Recycle. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Lynn; brothers, Arnold, Bill and Carl Trowbridge; sisters, Evelyn Byrns and Alice Smith. She is survived by her children, Karen Kingon (Bob), Brenda Trosko (Fred), David Haistead and Philip “Flip” Halstead (Mary); four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at a later date. John E. Smallegan, age 80, of Holland, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died on Friday, December 19, 2008, at Holland Hospital.  A private committal service was held with Rev. Steven Smallegan officiating.  John was born in Jamestown, MI on April 3, 1928 to Dick and Anna (Klooster) Smallegan.  He grew up in the village of Forest Grove, later residing in the Zeeland/Holland area.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, following which he graduated from Hope College. His major employment was that of a broker for DeBruyn Produce Company.  He also owned the Old Schoolhouse Restaurant in Borculo.  As a member of Second Reformed Church in Zeeland, John served as a deacon, an elder, choir member, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, Men’s Breakfast leader and established the noon Food For Thought program.  He served on Zeeland City Council, Zeeland Public School Board as a trustee and president, started Community Schools Council for athletes and sports (still active today), and organized Haven Huis, a 46-unit apartment complex for low-income housing.  Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years, Evelyn; and his children, Barbara Huizenga, Edward (Cheryl), Jack (Lisa), Donald, and Elizabeth Ebihara (Jeff); plus ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.  A son, Daniel, is deceased.  A memorial service is planned for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Third Reformed Church, 111 West 13th Street, Holland, with Rev. Leah M. Smith 1928-2008 Leah Mae Smith, 80, Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday January 4, 2009 at the Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. She was born on February 3, 1928 in Marine City, the daughter of the late Andrew and Addie (Densmore) Anderson. She was united in marriage to Harold Alton Smith on May 27, 1950 in Marine City, with Harold's father, Rev. Everett Alton Smith officiating. Together Harold and Leah operated the Ben Franklin Store in Imlay City and the Harbor Beach Variety Store for over 25 years. Harold preceded her in death on August 30, 1996. Leah was a member of the United Methodist Church in Harbor Beach, United Methodist Women, the Harbor Beach Chamber of Commerce and sang in the Harbor Beach Community Choir. She enjoyed her Wednesday night card games, and others in between, cooking and camping at Sand Lake. MYRTLE CATHERINE MERRIMAN DECKERVILLE Myrtle Catherine Merriman, age 88, of Deckerville, died Sunday, January 4, 2009 in Autumnwood of Deckerville. She was born December 5, 1919 in Harbor Beach, the daughter of the late Maxwell and Grace (See) Powers. Her family moved to McGregor, MI., and ran the Powers Hardware Store for many years. She graduated from Deckerville High School in 1938. She then attended the Business College of Port Huron. On February 1, 1941 she married Frank Merriman in Deckerville. Together they operated a Holstein dairy farm in Deckerville on land where Frank was born. Their farm was designated a centennial farm in 1992. Myrtle and Frank were married 66 years. He preceded her in death on October 20, 2007. Myrtle was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Deckerville, and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, computers, and especially being the family historian and corresponding with many friendsand extended family members throughout the years. She mastered the computer at age 82 and was an avid e-mailer. Her kindness, cards, and generosity touched everyone she met. Myrtle's cooking was legendary, especially her pies. She and her husband took in family, friends, and exchange students over the years. She was much loved by all and will be very much missed. Myrtle is survived by her only child; Phillip, his wife; Diane (Burns Cameron) and her step-grandson; Scott T. Cameron. Also, surviving are her sisters-in-law; Ida Merriman Wagner and Margaret Sweet Merriman, her brother-in-law; Willis "Bill" (Ilene) Merriman and many nieces and nephews. She retired from the Tecumseh Public Schools after 37 years of service.  Mae was a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Tecumseh, serving as the first organist and choir director. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, Tecumseh Business and Professional Women, Tecumseh Monday Club, Tecumseh Music Club, Lenawee County Retired Teacher Association and the 3 L’s at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.  Mae is survived by one daughter, Suzanne (Philip) McCartney of Bryan, Ohio; one son, Gregory (Lynn) Illeck of Anderson, S.C.; four grandchildren, Christopher McCartney, Michelle (Timothy) Umbaugh, Steven and Shawn Illeck, and great-grandson, Eli Umbaugh. Besides her husband, Stephan, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gladys. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Tecumseh, with the Rev. Richard Webb officiating. Michael Alan Lung, age 16, of Burr Oak, Mich., died Tuesday evening, Jan. 6, 2009, in Bronson Township, Branch County, Mich., due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born Feb. 6, 1992, in Sturgis, Mich., a son of Jamie and Shawna (Crapo) Lung. Michael had resided in the Burr Oak and Bronson area his whole life. He was currently a member of the Junior Class at Burr Oak High School where he was very active in athletics, participating in basketball, football, baseball, wrestling, and soccer. He loved reading and playing and working with computers. At the age of five years old Michael built his first computer. He enjoyed playing video games, especially adventure and sporting games. Michael had many interests, involvements and hobbies but what meant the most to him and what he truly loved was hanging out with his many, many friends. Robert J. O’Brien, age 70, of Clinton died Wednesday,  Jan. 7, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Hospital, Ann Arbor. He was born Feb. 13, 1938, in Cass Lake, Minn., the son of Thomas and Nona (Tucker) O’Brien. He married Eleanore Misiewicz on Sept. 19, 1959, and she survives. Robert retired in 1980 from the United States Air Force as a Master Sergeant. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Clinton, the American Legion Post #176 of Clinton and the VFW Post #4187 of Tecumseh. In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by two sons, Robert (Janice) O’Brien Jr. of Alachua, Fla., and William O’Brien of Westland; two daughters, Catherine O’Brien of Clinton and Joyce O’Brien of Westland; one brother, Thomas O’Brien of Minnesota; one sister, Joan (Clay) Hjelle of Minnesota, and four grandsons. Roland J. Cross, 74, of Allen, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at his home. He was born Sept. 16, 1934 in Hanover to Clemary and Odessa Irene (Strait) Cross. He was first married to Donna Buelow and she preceded him in death. He married Alma Powell Sept. 22, 1979 and she survives. Roland was a former employee at Walker Manufacturing in Jackson. He drove milk truck for several years. He started a lime business in 1962 and also did excavation work. Roland retired from farming in 1997. Surviving besides his wife Alma are four children, twins, Roxanna Munsell of Portsmouth, Va. and Roland D. (Martha) Cross of California, Tamara n(George) Martin of Portsmouth, Va. and Abby Cross and fiance Landon Mills of Camden; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Martha (Clyde) Stiles of Spring Arbor and Genieve Creamens of Jackson; a brother, Gerald Cross of Pullman, Mich.; mother-in-law, Irene Powell of Jonesville; four sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law. Ruth Marie Gove, 91, of Tecumseh passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at her home surrounded by her family. Ruth was born at home in Tipton, Mich., the daughter of Gustave and Esther (Armstrong) Wellnitz, on Nov. 5, 1917. She married Gordon Gove April 20, 1940, who preceded her in death July 5, 1987. Ruth was well known for her solos she sang in many churches for weddings and services. She was a beauty operator in Addison from 1938 to 1940. Ruth also owned and operated Wayside Beauty Shop in Tecumseh and Clinton, retiring in September, 1978.  She was a member of Riverbend Friends Church, Tecumseh, where she was a past Sunday School Teacher.  Ruth is survived by a son, Paul (Sally) Gove of Gettysburg, Pa., and a daughter, Beth Gove of Hillsdale; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Leola, two brothers and a sister.  According to her wishes, her remains were donated to the University of Michigan Medical School. He loved spending time with his family. She was born on September 11, 1916, in Joaquin, Texas, to the late Henry Cecil and Sally Taylor. She married Cecil (Bud) Shaver on May 13, 1943 in Sarasota, FL. He preceded her on March 8, 1962. Sarah was a member of the Peck Assembly of God church for the past 56 years. She retired in 1981 from Deckerville Die Form with 18 years of service. Surviving are four daughters; Linda (Kent) France of Lexington, Beverly (Gary) Wilson of Chesterfield, Donna (Jay) Kandler of Croswell, and Sally (Brian) Snider of Tokyo, Japan. She is the daughter of Dale and Judy Hornby Turner. Her marriage to Walter Posey was in 1984. She married Brian Hunter March 2, 2001 in Ontario Canada. Tammy was employed with Affiliated Customs Brokers, Port Huron. She enjoyed reading, walking, crossword puzzles and loved her dog Ozzy. Wilhelmina Doris (Travelbee) VanNuys, 92, of Coldwater, went to be with our Lord on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, after a short illness. She had been a resident of Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility for three years. She was born Aug. 25, 1916 in Clayton to Fred and Doris (Larrabee) Kohler. She married Robert Karl Travelbee on Oct. 24, 1936. He preceded her in death. She married Donald G. VanNuys on Feb. 21, 1970. He also preceded her in death. Wilhelmina retired from the Coldwater Regional Center in 1978. She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, knitting and doll collecting. She took great joy in raising dogs throughout the years. She is survived by sons Robert and Cora Travelbee of Coldwater, Rolland and Ellen Travelbee of Coldwater, Rodney and Georgia Travelbee of Union City, Roger and Debbie Travelbee of Coldwater and Randy and Karen Travelbee of Columbus, Ind.; daughter Echo Stump and Alfonso Rios of Coldwater; 38 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, and sisters Myrna Kruse and Lucy Tucker. DE BRUYN, William Jr. Of Kalamazoo On Tuesday, January 6, 2009, Bill was transitioned from this life to live eternally with his Heavenly Father and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born February 26, 1930 in Kalamazoo, to William Sr. and Nellie (Hoogenboom) De Bruyn. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from 1951-1952. He retired from Precision Heat Treating Company. Bill was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church. On June 27, 1958 he was united in marriage to Karen Ritsema, who preceded him in death in December of 2007. He has two children, one daughter and one son, Crystal "June" (Curtis) Bassler and Ross De Bruyn; four grandchildren, Justin Bassler, Josh Bassler, Katelynn De Bruyn and Amanda De Bruyn; one brother, Jerry De Bruyn and one sister-in-law, Janice De Bruyn; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Evelyn (Donald) Musselman and Joyce (Boyd) Slocum; and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his brother, Robert De Bruyn in October 2007. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 11:00 AM from the Second Christian Reformed Church, 3015 Nichols Road with Rev. Dr. Warren Lammers, officiating.
