WAY TO TODAY - Music enjoyable at skating rink Saturday, February 28, 2009 5:08 PM - GARY PULLANO |
From the pages of the Holland City News and Holland Sentinel. Saturday March 1, 1884 • One very enjoyable feature of the roller skating rink is the music furnished by Dr. Gee's band. • The total amount received for the endowment of theological instruction in Hope College has now reached $3,884. • Business is picking up on the Chicago & West Michigan Railway. Man of the employees who were “laid off” some time ago have been reinstated. We notice Mr. Geo. Hunt on duty at the freight office again. • A new drawbridge is being constructed over Grand River at Ferrysburg that is to support two tracks, one for the use of the Chicago & West Michigan Railway and the other for the Detroit and Milwaukee Railway. This will alleviate the problems presented by having only a single track. Thursday March 4, 1909 • Hereafter, the night firemen, of which there re four at each engine house, will receive $125 per annum, a raise of $25. The day men will get a raise of $10 each. The raise was made in response to a petition from the night men for a raise of $50 that was presented to the board of police commissioners. • At the board of public works meeting Monday night it was reported the test of the new turbine generator unit at the city lighting plant made a very favorable showing. • The Buss Machine works shipped one of its 64-inch cabinet planers to Steinway & sons of New York City. This extraordinary planer will be used to lane the large sounding boards of Steinway pianos. • When you come in on the Interurban care get your bearings when the conductor calls out “Lincoln Avenue.” Land street is now more and Lincoln Avenue has taken its place. Last night the council passed the resolution that changed the name of the street. It was adopted based on a petition from Land street residents. • The new staff of the Anchor at Hope College includes editor Henry K. Pasma and associate editors John Wichers and John Warnshuis. Thursday March 1, 1934 • Technically, nearly 7,000 Holland residents today are subject to 90 days in jail or $100 fine for failure to pay the head tax levied for old age pensions. The deadline passed at 5 p.m. yesterday with only a small fraction of one percent of some 7,000 registered making the $2 payment. It is unlikely that any legal action will be taken in the city to enforce the head tax ruling. • Word has been received from Washington that Cong. George Foulkes, Democratic leader, will attend the banquet and ball to be staged by the Young Democratic Club of Holland at the Masonic Temple Monday evening. Gary Pullano is a resident of Park Township. |
