Bernice M. Tobey, 83, of Jonesville, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. She was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Warren, Mich., to Charles and Bertha (Sorenson) Robidue. She was married Aug. 29, 1953, to Thomas Tobey and he preceded her in death in 1992 . Bernice was a member of the Jonesville Presbyterian Church and a longtime resident of Jonesville. Surviving are three children, Laurie (Bruce) Raeburn of Shorewood, Illinois, Christine (Larry Lapeer) Tobey of Caneyville, Kentucky and Brian (Beth) Tobey of Florence, Kentucky; five grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Rosemary Darden. Memorial services will take place at a later date. There will be no visitation or calling hours at this time. Beverly J. Potts, age 87, of Adrian, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at Provincial House surrounded by her loving family. She was born Feb. 23, 1922, in Adrian to Frank and Florence (Hood) Harsh. She had been employed by Stubnitz Greene, Hoover Ballbearing, later known as Johnson Control. She enjoyed sewing, spending time with her family and cooking. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Adrian. Beverly is survived by three daughters, Peggy Onsted of Adrian, Shirley Burdine and her husband, Richard, of Rio Rancho, N.M.,  and Pamela Wolkins and her husband, Bill, of Adrian; a son, Michael Potts of Addison; a sister, Lilly Mae Schook, and her husband, Richard, of Tecumseh; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Beaubien, her second husband, Milton Potts, and five brothers, Dewey, Elwyn, Fred, Calvin, and Leonard. Funeral services for Beverly will be held Wednesday, March 25, at 11 a.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, with the Rev. Geoff Koglin officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. He married Lorna Frederick on April 9, 1977 in Flint. Mr. Winn proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1993 from General Motors as a tool & die man. Clair Edward “Pete” Piatt died Sunday morning, March 22, 2009 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo following a sudden illness.  Mr. Piatt was born May 17, 1930, in Bronson, the son of Henry C. and Bessie (Thompson) Piatt. He graduated from Bronson High School in the class of 1948. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. Following his discharge in 1952 he was employed at the Studebaker auto plant in South Bend, Ind.  On Feb. 28, 1953, he married Mary Ann Newman at the First Congregational Church in Bronson. She preceded him in death on Feb.9, 1988. He then met Marilyn Shaw, who was his companion for the past 21 years. In 1953 he went to work at Bronson Tool and Die (later Bronson Specialties) until his retirement in 1993. He possessed a keen mechanical knowledge and was the lead engineer on several projects including a more efficient electrical transformer for which he earned a U.S. Patent. He was also very knowledgeable about hydraulics and built his own leaf vacuum and log splitter before either item was commonplace.  Following his retirement he remained active as a skilled carpenter and woodworker and constructed or assisted on countless buildings in the area. He enjoyed feeding wild birds and built customized birdhouses, which he gave to friends and family. He also enjoyed being the caretaker of his next-door neighbors. He also purchased and reconditioned a 1950 Chevrolet businessman’s coupe — the same model as his first automobile. He and Marilyn participated in numerous car shows and swap meets. He and Marilyn are members of the L A Breakfast Club.  He was a pitcher for many years in the Bronson Fast Pitch Softball League. In the 1970s he earned a private pilot’s license and was a shareholder in the Sturgis Flying Club based at the Kirsch Municipal Airport. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 52 in Bronson and spent 15 years as an active volunteer on the Bronson Fire Department and is now an honorary member.   He is survived by a son, Richard Piatt, of Meredith, N.H.; a daughter, Sharon Curtis and her companion, Kirk Yearling, of Coldwater; two grandsons, Nathaniel (Laura) Piatt of Coldwater and Garrett Curtis of Toledo, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Piatt, and two sisters, Thelma Rissman and Mary Ellen Wotta. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Dave Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Bronson Cemetery with full military honors by the Bronson Post of the American Legion. The Michigan Patriot Guard will also stand in his honor. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.   |

DIANE ANNA LESOSKI ELKTON Diane Anna Lesoski, age 67, of Elkton, died Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Tendercare in Cass City, Michigan. She was born May 22, 1941 in Owendale, daughter of William and Christine (Gabriel) Elsesser. On January 20, 1961, Diane was united in marriage to Paul Lesoski at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon. They moved to Elkton from Owendale in 1965. She was a member of the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Ubly and Elkton Senior Citizen's Club. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, dancing and music. Diane also enjoyed relaxing in her chair and listening to the radio. She is survived by a son; Paul (Becky) Lesoski of Bad Axe, two daughters; Pamela Lesoski of Bad Axe, Pauline (Wayne) Allen of Deckerville, six grandchildren; Nathan, Kendra, Adam, Emanual, Charlene and Tiffany, two sisters; Donna Gunsell and Virginia Kaine, both of Owendale, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, two brothers; Otto Elsesser and William Elsesser and one son; Adam. In keeping with her wishes there will be no funeral or visitation at this time. David "KP" Bryce Kirkpatrick Metamora David "KP" Bryce Kirkpatrick, 56, of Metamora, passed away Monday (March 16, 2009) after a courageous 4-year battle with brain cancer. He was born October 30, 1952, in Detroit, and graduated from Southfield High School in 1970. He attended Rochester College, where he played basketball. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Oakland University in 1974 and began teaching that same year for Lapeer Community Schools. He earned a Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from Oakland University and a Master's degree in Administration from Central Michigan University. He was a licensed professional counselor and spent the last portion of his nearly 32 year career as a guidance counselor at E.T. White Junior High and Lapeer West High School. Doris Shirk Mason of Tecumseh, formerly of Owosso, passed away March 19, 2009. Doris was born in Duquense, Pa., the daughter of Blair and Elizabeth Morgan. In 1947 she married John Shirk. John died in a car accident in 1977. In 1986 she married Earl D. Mason and he survives.  Surviving children are Ronald (Jeanie) Shirk of Flint, Mich., Diane (Gary) Hahnert of Spokane Valley, Wash., Rebecca (Mark) Vredenburgh of Long Beach, Calif., Jeffery (Jane) Shirk of Dansville, Mich., Elaine (Gary) Hudson of Murrieta, Calif., and Erik (Denise) Mason of Livonia, Mich. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Her sister, Shirley (Robert) Harper of West Mifflin, Pa., also survives. Doris was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Morgan; her sister, Ruth Hackett, and a grandson, Adam Shirk.  Doris worked in the Insurance field for many years while living in Owosso and then in the court system after moving to Tecumseh.  After Doris retired in 1988 she enjoyed traveling and visiting with friends and relatives.  Cremation has taken place at her request, and there will be a Memorial Service at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Tecumseh on March 27, 2009, at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Duane W. Buschlen 1933 - 2009 Duane W. Buschlen, 75, Pigeon, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at home. He was born in Pigeon on June 24, 1933, son of the late William W. and Edna C. (Gregor) Buschlen. Duane graduated from Pigeon High School in 1951, where he played football and was named all-conference halfback beginning in his sophomore year. He began farming out of high school and enjoyed working the ground. He was a Fox TV sports fan, watching the Pistons as well as local high school sports teams. Duane played blooper ball in the area for many years and also loved to play euchre in area tournaments. He enjoyed hunting up north as well as in the area and driving around and visiting with friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. He is survived by five children, Robin (Ann) Buschlen, Pigeon, Kyle Buschlen, Albion, Eric (Amy McGinnis) Buschlen, Midland, Paul (Sherry) Buschlen, Anthem, Ariz., and Paula (Tress) Schuyler, Peoria, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, Amanda and Jenna Buschlen, Shane Buschlen, Emma, Zachary and Peyton Buschlen, Trenton and Ethan Gerish and Faith and Aden Schuyler; three sisters, Maxine Stirrett, Pigeon, Grace Reibling, Elkton and Shirley (William) Zinnecker, Cass City; one brother, Calvin (Ann) Buschlen, Elkton and several nieces and nephews. She was born March 2, 1920 in Nuernburg, Bavaria, Germany, daughter of the late Josef and Ida (Schertzel) Hoehenleitner. She married Marvin A. Stapleton, he died June 17, 1990. She is survived by one son, Marvin M.H. Stapleton of Lexington. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ilse Rauth of Bremen, Germany. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 21 at the Community Baptist Church, Croswell with The Rev. Rich Eickelbarger officiating. Earl G. Brower, 89, of Zeeland, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at Zeeland Community Hospital. Earl was born January 13, 1920 to Gerritt and Grace Brouwer in Drenthe.  Earl served his country during WWII as a corporal in the U.S. Army on the island of Trinidad with the Coastal Battery.  Earl returned home and married Alnora Nykamp.  They raised their two sons and were members of Third Christian Reformed Church of Zeeland.  Earl worked for Chris-Craft until his retirement and was  preceded in death by his wife, Alnora, in 1996.  He is survived by his sons, Gary and Jon, both of Zeeland, and his brother, Howard and Thressa Brouwer of Hudsonville, nieces: Bonnie and Bern Grysen, Beverly and Greg Steigenga, Gale and Jim Krikke. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday at the Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State Street, Zeeland. Earl Van Lente, age 81, of Holland, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Hospice House of Holland following a long struggle with cancer.  Earl was a member of Third Reformed Church and was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army.  He was co-owner of Jack and Earl Texaco for 18 years and also worked for DeNooyer Chevrolet, TVCO and Marvin Albers.  He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dr. Steven Zonnebelt.  He is survived by his wife, of 61 years, Alma; and children, Michael Van Lente and Sandy Beek of Hudsonville, Kristi and Harold Scott of Grand Haven, Kathy Zonnebelt of Vero Beach, FL, Tom and Teri Van Lente of Hamilton, Karen and Randy Dykema of Holland; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara and Harry Doornbos of Holland, Pat Vander Yacht of West Olive; sisters-in-law, Betty Buter of Elkridge, MD, Shirley Buter of Zeeland, Hattie Buter of Allegan; several nephews and nieces.  A memorial service with military honors will be 1:30 p.m. March 25, 2009 at Third Reformed Church, 111 West 13th Street in Holland.  Visitation will be on Wednesday from 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church.  Reverends Bill Unzicker and Kent Fry will be officiating.  Burial will be in Graafschap Cemetery.   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland or the American Heart Association.  Arrangements are by Lakeshore Memorial Services.  An on-line registry book is available at www.lakeshorememorial.com. |

Edward Roy Guajardo,  72 of Litchfield, passed away Friday, March 20, 2009,  at the Community Health Center of Branch County, Coldwater.  He was born Feb. 12, 1937, in Ranger, Texas, to Phillip G. and Sophia (Ramirez) Guajardo. Ed had been employed at Simpson Stamping and the Litchfield Grain Company and enjoyed fishing and crafts.  On May 5, 1959, he married Mary Ann Biglow and she survives. Also surviving are his children: Edward (Betty) Guajardo, Jr.,  Litchfield, William Guajardo, Hillsdale, Rita Guajardo, Litchfield; a sister,  Mary Soto, Chicago, Ill.;  four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters. Elsie L. Elliott, 94, of Coldwater died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at The Laurels of Coldwater. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. The service will be held on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Pierce from the Coldwater First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Girard. Elsie was born Oct. 18, 1914 in Detroit, to Edward and Emma (Bartel) Werner. She married Kenneth B. Elliott on Oct. 24, 1933, in Angola, Ind. Together, they owned and operated the former Elliott’s Market for 40 plus years, now known as Rick’s Party Store, retiring in 1979. They started with a Sinclair gas station, eventually adding groceries and a fresh produce market. Besides working at the market, Elsie volunteered for several organizations including the CHC Auxiliary, PTA, Camp Fire Girls, Cub Scouts and the Grange to name a few. When Elsie retired in 1979, she and Ken wintered at Georgetown Park in Lakeland, Fla. She entered heartily into many activities, playing shuffleboard, riding three wheel bikes around the park, playing cards, knitting, sewing, reading, attending potlucks and the vesper services there. Elsie was part of the kitchen band, the welcome committee and the crafts group where she was in charge of the items sold. There, she earned one of her most prized possessions, a trophy for Best Salesperson. She’ll always be remembered for her blue eyes and sparkling smile. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Ken, her parents and her brother Harold Werner. She is survived by her son Kenneth and Judy Elliott of Coldwater, her daughters Jean Brown of Kennewick, Wash., Nancy and Jim Larin of New Town, Conn., her half sisters W. Esther Mae Dodson, 86, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Friday morning, March 20, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born March 4, 1915, in Spring City, Tenn., a daughter to the late Joseph and Almedia (Loden) Collins and raised by Annie and Schyler Gilkison in Findley, Mich. Esther attended school in Colon, Mich., and Spring City, Tenn. On May 19, 1931, she married her childhood sweetheart Claude R. Dodson in Spring City, Tenn. He died Dec.  21, 1978. She and Claude had a family of 10 children — six sons and four daughters. Esther was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She loved dolls and angels and time spent with her family. Her fine southern cooking will be forever missed by her family and friends. She is survived by three daughters, Eula Mae (Harold) Cornish of Three Rivers, Janet Maxine Hagelgans of Sturgis and Linda Sue (Mike) Hogan of Bronson; two sons, Allen Thomas (Mary Lou) Dodson of Union City and Robert Lee (Vickie) Dodson of White Pigeon; 34 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Dodson of White Pigeon; and sister-in-law, Margaret Dodson of Defiance, Ohio. Genevieve S. Roggenbuck 1922-2009 Genevieve Sophia Roggenbuck, 86, joined her Lord in the glory of heaven on March 7, 2009. She was born June 16, 1922 in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Walter and Sophie (Gawel) Majewski. She married Clarence Roggenbuck on May 1, 1943 in Rapson at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Clarence preceded her in death on December 31, 1998. She was a life time farmer, first on her parents farm, then with her husband Clarence and her son Clifford. Genevieve enjoyed many of the activities involved in farm life, cooking large meals for her family, taking lunch to the field to picnic, tending to her chickens, caring for her many gardens and canning lots of food. When she had an opportunity, she enjoyed traveling with Clarence and the Port Hope Senior Citizens, attending her Farm Bureau monthly meetings, making rag rugs and embroidering. Beloved husband of 52 years to the late Bonnie Heichel, whom he married March 29, 1958. Gerald served in the Army during the Korean War in the 24th Inf. Division and retired from General Motors. Gladys moved to Bayfield, Wis. in 1994 and has been a resident of Northern Lights HCC for over 4 years. She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bayfield and she enjoyed speaking and writing in Swedish. She was married June 26, 1948 to Gene Lennard and he survives. Grace was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale. She was better known as the "strawberry lady".  She was a farmer's wife for 60 years and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for 30 years. James W. Schmidlin, age 47 of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Saturday evening, March 14, 2009, in Sherman Township, Mich., due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born Feb. 9, 1962, in Coldwater, a son to Charles and Jean (Greene) Schmidlin. Jim had resided in Sturgis for the past seven years coming from Lambertville, Mich. He was a member of St. Michael Lutheran Church in Ottawa Lake, Mich., and he loved fishing. He is survived by his parents, Charles and Jean (Greene) Schmidlin of Lambertville, Mich.; one daughter, Sarah of Toledo, Ohio; two sisters, Vicki Flores of Lambertville Mich., and Lisa Duda of Temperance, Mich.; two brothers, Mike Boston of Thomasville, Ga. and Guy Boston; and his former wife, Patricia Schmidlin of Sturgis. He was preceded in death by one brother, Keith Schmidlin and his grandparents. In accordance with family wishes, cremation has taken place. She married the love of her life, Donald Joe Landesman, D.O. on December 5, 1968 in Fayetteville, NC after which they moved to Panama from 1969-70. In the years that followed, they lived in Huntington Woods, MI as well as North Palm Beach, FL before settling in Grand Blanc, MI in 1979. Her first son Joshua Vincent (Stefanie) was born in 1973 followed by Nathan Joseph (Alicia) in 1975. She was always active in her sons' aspirations and endeavors - accepting parental responsibilities (especially school functions) including many years on the educational board of Powers Catholic High School. During Josh's film school years in New York City and Nathan's medical training, she made life as comfortable and as pleasant as possible by being the "Go To" person for EVERYTHING. Judi raised two boys, ran a household, conducted all family business, strategized and implemented all family investments all while maintaining a jewelry business for 25 years. She never fell short in any endeavor she started. KENNETH "BILL" WILLIAM WELCH LAKE HAVASU CITY, ARIZ. Kenneth "Bill" William Welch, 74, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on February 16, 2009 in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. He was born on December 10, 1934, in Brown City, to Kenneth Edgar and Louise (Richardson) Welch. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara Ann; son, William Alan Welch (Joanne) of Texas; daughter, Lori Ann Welch of California; grandchildren, Jennifer (Welch) and Brian Remsberg of South Carolina, Eric Welch stationed in Maine with the US Navy, Lisa (Welch) and Mikah Wisner of Alaska, Adam and Monique Banas of Idaho, Anya Banas of Colorado. Bill enjoyed a recent visit with his two great grandsons, Dean and Franklin Remsberg of South Carolina. Bill is also survived by sister, Juanita (Welch) and Wayne Smith of Michigan; brother, Dr. Myron and Marcia Welch of Iowa; brother-in-law, Carl and Shirley Borsodi of Michigan, sister-in-law, June Pridemore of Michigan, brother-in-law, Bob Sakuta of Michigan; plus many nieces and nephews. Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve unit in Port Huron for 9 years. He graduated from barber college in May 1953, prior to graduating from high school that month. He worked in his father's barbershop for 9 years and retained an active barber's license in Michigan until his death. Bill also held various jobs throughout his lifetime: road construction; delivery of Standard Oil petroleum products to local farmers and businesses; National Sales Representative for Frank Industries RV manufacturing, later known as Xplorer Motor Homes; trained with Farm Bureau Insurance Company prior to opening Bill Welch Insurance Agency, which he owned and operated for 25 years until his retirement. Bill and Barbara enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada in their motor home until 5 years ago, when they decided to make Lake Havasu City their new home. One of their favorite locations to visit was the Pacific Northwest coastline, particularly Newport, Oregon, where Bill spent hours attempting to catch Dungeness crabs. They also enjoyed traveling with the London Bridgers RV club of Lake Havasu City. Among other favorite hobbies were building, flying, and rebuilding remote control airplanes. He was an active member and officer of the Havasu Sport Flyers & the Desert Hawks. Bill was a very caring individual that enjoyed his affiliation with multiple service organizations, especially the Shriners, the Masons and the Eagles. Visitation was held at Lietz-Fraze Chapel in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., on February 20, with military and Masonic funeral services held at the same location on February 21. A memorial service and burial of Bill's ashes in Michigan in May 2009 is being planned. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Hospice of Lake Havasu City, P.O. Kyle R. Desmond, 24, of Coldwater, died Monday, March 23, 2009 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Kyle was born Feb. 2, 1985 in Coldwater to James and Sara (Carlisle) Desmond. Kyle graduated from Quincy High School in 2004 and then studied at Kellogg Community College. Kyle was active in sports and had been the captain and manager of both the Quincy High School football and baseball teams. He had a tremendous amount of spirit and gave deep commitment to anything he did; in his honor, the school created the “Kyle Desmond Award” for high school baseball, an award that is based on inspiration, character and leadership. Kyle volunteered at the Community Health Center and was an avid Detroit sports fan. He enjoyed playing Xbox and racing his radio controlled cars. Most of all, Kyle enjoyed spending time with his family at the lake and venturing out on their pontoon boat. Kyle was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lucille and Vincent Desmond. He is survived by his parents Jim and Sara Desmond of Coldwater, his sister Brittni Desmond of Coldwater, maternal grandparents George and Sue Carlisle of Hillsdale, aunts and uncles Bob and Diane Feidler of Clearwater, Fla., Chris and Suzanne Carlisle of Canton and Dave and Betsy Carlisle of Austin, Texas. Lloyd K. Essenmacher 1927-2009 Lloyd K. Essenmacher, 81, Harbor Beach, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2009 peacefully at his home with family at his side while under hospice care. He was born on November 23, 1927 in Harbor Beach to the late Joseph and Virginia (Warner) Essenmacher. Lloyd and Marilyn Booms were united in marriage on June 20, 1953 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena. Lloyd was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving as a paratrooper in the Eleventh Airborne Division at the end of World War II and in the occupation of Japan. Following his military service, he completed electronics school, ran a successful television business and completed his career at Sears through retirement. He loved animals, nature and thoroughly enjoyed spending time in the woods. He was very active in sports and was always up for a game with his kids or in the community. He was an avid card player, with euchre and pedro often being played around the home. Lloyd was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church of Harbor Beach. Beloved wife and mother  Marlene Gayle Cole passed away  Saturday, March 21, 2009, at 6:30 a.m. at Mountain View Hospital in Las Cruces, NM. Mrs. Cole was born on May 23, 1935 to Carol and Marvin DeJonge of Zeeland,  graduated from Zeeland High School in 1953 and married Dale Cole on December 5, 1953. She is preceded in death by her sons, Michael Lee and Larry Robert Cole; mother and father, Carol and Marvin DeJonge; and grandparents, Lou and Anna Hendricks of Zeeland. She is survived by her husband, Dale Cole, of 55 years; son, David Cole and wife, Lori Cole; and grandchildren, Matthew and Julianna Cole of Stevensville, MI; and daughter, Linda Cole of Alamogordo, NM. Mrs. Cole had a long and varied life as an outstanding homemaker, Cub Scout leader, secretary to Willard Wichers at the Netherlands consulate, and co-owner of Cole's Auto Parts and Company of Deming, NM. Although her last years were in the desert southwest of the United States in Deming, NM, which she loved dearly, her Dutch upbringing and heritage was always a part of her and not far from her heart. Mrs. Cole will be dearly missed and her lifestyle will set an example for many to follow. She loved and was loved back. Marlin C. Raper, age 79, of Adrian went to be with our Lord on Friday, March 20, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Nov. 11, 1929, in Phil Campbell, Ala., to Andrew and Mandy Kizzie (Clark) Raper. He married Joan M. Sell on July 24, 1954, in Angola, Ind. Marlin was employed at Bohn Aluminum and Brass for 39 years retiring in 1990. He will be remembered dearly by his wife, Joan; two daughters, Jan Walker and Rebecca (James) Rutherford, both of Adrian; five grandchildren, Uriah (Jeremey) Armstrong, Roy (Amanda) Martinez, James Levi, Breanna and Wyatt Rutherford; and one step-grandson, Christopher Otis; five great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Noah, Jared and Matthew Armstrong and Levi Martinez; and two step-great-grandsons, D’andre and Mekhi Garrison; a brother, Glaney Raper of Adrian; and three sisters, Bessie Cleveland of Alabama, Nellie Sumner and Bernice (Uple) Palmer, both of Adrian. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Meta D. McKee 1920 - 2009 Meta Dorothy McKee, 88, Pigeon, formerly of Mount Clemens, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care in Pigeon. She was born in Pigeon at the family home on May 31, 1920, the daughter of the late Herman H. and Anna Marie (Schuette) Buchholz. She was baptized at Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon on June 13, 1920. She was a 1938 graduate of Pigeon High School . Meta attended the Evangelical Deaconess School of Nursing in Detroit. She graduated on May 15, 1941 and received her R.N. license in 1942. She served with the U.S. Army as 1st Lieutenant Nurse, 147 General Hospital, Hawaii, until her discharge in August of 1946. On March 6, 1948 she was married to Tom McKee in the Detroit Area and he preceded her in death. Prior to WWII, Meta was an industrial nurse with Briggs Industrial. Following the war, she worked as an industrial nurse with Chrysler Corporation for 40 years, retiring in 1986. She lived most of her life in theMount Clemens area and was formerly a very active member of the American Lutheran Church in Clinton. Township She loved beautiful things, birds, her garden and especially her flowers. She enjoyed helping people, she loved food and spending time with family and friends. She diligently developed and maintained the records of her family history and regarded her nieces and nephews as her children. She is survived by two brothers, William (Margaret) Buchholz, Pigeon and Larry (Pat) Buchholz, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Marge Buchholz, Fla. and 24 favorite nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Ernst (Marie) Buchholz, Adolph (Elna) Buchholz, infant sister, Frieda, Ervin (Alice) Buchholz, Otto (Betty) Buchholz and Albert Buchholz; a sister-in-law, Leona Buchholz; two nephews, Richard and Kent Buchholz and a niece, Carol Taylor. Nona J. Haag 1935-2009 Nona Jean Haag, 73, Gagetown, this little lamb of God, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2009 at the home of her in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Haag in Kilmanagh, following a six-month illness. She was born on December 22, 1935 in Las Animas, Colo., daughter of the late Clyde E. and Leatha D. (Sharp) Hampton. Nona was united in marriage to Maurice O. Haag on January 11, 1994 in Kinde. She attended the University of Utah and Wayne State University in Detroit. She had been employed as a supervisor of Human Resources for Michigan Consolidated Gas Company in Detroit before retiring after many years of service. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Bad Axe. She was a member of the Bad Axe Historical Society and past president, Octagon Barn Society, Pigeon River Quilters and Women's Relief Society. She was very active in the Michigan Archeological Society, finding many rare and unusual prehistoric artifacts. She also was in several choirs in the area and loved to fish. She is survived by her husband, Maurice, Gagetown; five sons, Charles Bradford Adams, Tenn., Clyde Roderick "Rick" Adams, Colorado Springs, Colo., Steven Eugene Adams, Minneapolis, Minn., George Edward Kinde, Morley and Geoffrey Roland Kinde, Detroit; step-daughter, Andrea (Randy) McBrayer, Sebewaing; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and her best friend Carol Lee. He attended Montgomery School Systems. He was a US Army Veteran. He loved the great outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening, puzzle books, playing cards and reading, and spending time with his family. He will be sadly missed. Pauline  N.  Placatka, age 93, of Bronson, died Friday, March 20, 2009, at the Lifespan Hospice House in Battle Creek. She had been in failing health. Pauline was born Jan. 12, 1916, in Oakville, Iowa, daughter of Kramer Mathias and Kathryn (Johnson) Spitznogel and was raised in the Muscatine, Iowa area. She married James Frank Placatka in 1937 and the couple moved to Bronson in 1944. James died in September, 1997. In her early years, Pauline had worked at the Heinz Tomato Factory and at Bonwit Teller, both in the Davenport, Iowa area. After her marriage, she became a home maker and was known for her artistic skills, especially for her paintings for which she won many awards. Her crowning achievement was a first place at the University of Michigan Art Museum. She also enjoyed knitting, flower gardens and golfing. Pauline was a former member of the O.E.S., the Bronson Women’s Club where she was involved in the Bronson Civic Theatre, the Bronson Community Choir, the Sit and Knit Group and was a member of the Bronson Ladies Golf League. She was also a Girl scout leader for many years and had kept the same group of girls for her entire tenure. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Robert Cline of Sherwood; her sons, James Placatka of Bronson and David Placatka of Sherwood; grandchildren, Christopher Cline and Ryan Cline and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; a grandson David Placatka; and her sister Ruth. According to her wishes, cremation will take place.  A memorial service will be planned later this spring.  Arrangements are by the Kolcz Funeral Home of Bronson. Robert J. Pawlowski 1947-2009 Robert J. Pawlowski, 62, Harbor Beach, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2009 at his home. He was born on February 1, 1947 in Harbor Beach to the late Roman and Marie (Stocks) Pawlowski. Bob and Dianne Noble were united in marriage on July 24, 1971 in Harbor Beach. Bob served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, the VFW Post of Harbor Beach and the Knights of Columbus Council #11432 of Harbor Beach. He loved fishing, going to the casino, hanging out at Hunter's Bar, his grandchildren and loved barbecue's with friends and family, especially marshmallows. Bob enjoyed the simple things in life. He was born August 28, 1965, in Metamora, to John and Judy (Pickett) Dunham. He graduated from Lapeer West High School in 1983. After graduation, he attended Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Mo., where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Theology. He then was the Associate Pastor at Hessville Christian Church in Indiana. From there, he served at Hillsboro Church of Christ in Ohio, while there he earned his Masters Degree in Divinity from Cincinnati Bible College. For the past eight years, Russ was the Senior Pastor at the Flippin Christian Church. He and his family moved from Republic, Mo., in January 2001 to Flippin, Ark., to be the minister at Flippin Christian Church. Russ was very active in the community affairs. He was born January 19, 1928 in Detroit, son to the late John and Victoria (Savaila) Pandrea. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. Samuel married Dorothy McQuarrie January 28, 1949 in Marlette. He worked at Marlette Auto Parts for many years until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, family outings, traveling and most of all, his family. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of 60 years, one son; Sam Pandrea of Marlette, one daughter; Katrina (Michael) Pandrea -Moorehead of Marlette, three grandchildren; Desiree (Timothy) Butler of St. Clair Shores, Samantha Pandrea of Monroe and Tamie Pandrea & fianc Michael Pardy of Snover, one great grandson; Landon Pardy of Snover, two sisters; Rose (Sam) Senopole and Angeline Tomlan, both of New Port Richey, Florida. He married Vicky Baker on May 1, 1980 in Clarksville, Tenn. Ted came to Branch County in 1984, when he began his career at Florence Crane Correctional Facility and was currently a Day Captain. Mr. Wasserman graduated from Manchester High School and attended Manchester College in Connecticut. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Coldwater Eagles. Ted was an avid sports fan enjoying all types of sports and playing on many local teams, and was a huge fan of all the Boston teams. He enjoyed the outdoors and was known for his immaculate yard. Most of all, Ted enjoyed his family; what made him most proud and what he considered to be his biggest accomplishments were his beloved grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Vicky, his sons, Joshua (Ashley) Wasserman of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., Jared Wasserman and Kevin Winters of Chicago, Jacob (Patricia) Wasserman of Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Jennifer (James) Marker of Ft. Thomas Bitmas Deckerville Thomas Bitmas, age 63 of Deckerville, passed away Thursday (March 12, 2009). He was the Son of the late Frank and Helen Bitmas. Brother of Ronald Bitmas, Mary Billings and the late Irene Tast and the late Dorothy Foss. Thomas lived at the Deckerville Pine House for 27 years. He had many friends. He loved to socialize and listen to polka music. A favorite past-time was riding to the dealers lots in Sandusky and looking for red sports cars. Every May, he would put on a tuxedo and ride in a limo with his Pine House friends to the May Ball to dance with many beautiful women who were his friends. He enjoyed his work at Sanilac County Community Mental Health. Thomas also had a strong love for giraffes and was an avid collector of them. He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him. TRAVERSE CITY — Phyllis Josephine Whitney, 87, of Traverse City, went to be with the Almighty Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Munson Hospice House.She was born in Empire Twp. Sept. 3, 1921, to Nathaniel and Amanda Holden. Her mother died shortly after her birth, and Phyllis was taken by her 14-year-old sister Lenore on a train to Chicago. There she was given to her Aunt Phyllis (Phalen) Barry and her husband to be raised in Oak Park, Ill. She spent many summers in the Glen Lake area with her birth family.As a nursing student, Phyllis met and married Dr. Ernest Wright. They had three daughters. Later the family moved to Glen Lake, where they lived for many years. She lived her remaining years in Traverse City.Phyllis worked for the Grand Traverse Department of Social Services for 20 years. She was very intelligent, with a fine sense of humor and an extensive vocabulary. Phyllis was a voracious reader. She enjoyed her family, friends, cats and antiques.Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Tracy Wright of Seattle, Jo Erin Wright of Traverse City and Becky (Jerry) Luther of Sandpoint, Idaho; and one grandson, Travis Geurin of Chicago. Also surviving are her special nieces, Alice Cheek and her daughter, Martha McCourt; as well as many other nieces and nephews and their families.She was preceded in death by her husbands, Dr. Ernest Wright, Franklin Noonan, and Vincent Whitney; six brothers and five sisters.In accordance with Phyllis' wishes, cremation will take place. We are sorry that he had to leave us so soon. He will be eternally loved, cherished, and respected for the man he was and will always be to us. RODGERS, Violet Rosalie - Age 89, of Flint, died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at home, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Chaplain Jack Eagan will officiate. Burial will follow in Flint Memorial Park. Visitation will be held 6-9 PM Monday, 12-9 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Cancer Society or Brian's House. Violet was born January 4, 1920 in Herrin, IL, the daughter of Edward and Rosa McFadden. She was married to Jess Rodgers, who preceded her in death on October 5, 1986. She was an extremely loving mother and grandmother. Violet enjoyed spending her time with family; they were everything to her, just as she was everything to them. Surviving are: children, Dorothy (Bill) Pettigrew of Swartz Creek, Donna (Dave) Gibbs of Desert Hot Springs, CA, Gary (Judy) Rodgers of Flint, Diane (Bill) Early of Flint, Bonnie (Bob) Campbell of Swartz Creek, Marilyn (Rick) Pifer of Grand Blanc; 25 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Dell Rodgers. She was preceded in death by her sons, J.D. & Bill; brothers, Bud and John; sisters, Beulah and Goldie; granddaughter, Jamie; great-granddaughter, Avery; great-grandson, Colin. Willie “Bill” G. Dumas, 88, of Goshen, died Friday, March 13, 2009, at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. He had been ill the past two years. He was born Feb. 23, 1921, in Marshall County, Alabama, to William R. and Annie (Tidmore) Dumas. He married Beatrice May on June 7, 1947 in Chatsworth, Alabama. She survives. A metallurgist, Mr. Dumas worked for Dana Corporation for 23 years before retiring in 1985. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Goshen and a past member of Hillsdale American Legion. He enjoyed playing golf and shuffleboard. He was a sports fan of all sports and teams. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; a daughter, Sheila K. (John) Dolph of Goshen; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Patricia Dumas. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Dumas and two sisters, Frances Padgett and Maedelmas Boone. Visitation was held 4-7 p.m., Monday, March 16 at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. Funeral services are 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 17 at the funeral home. Rev. Gregg Lanzen of First Baptist Church, Goshen will officiate. Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorials may be directed to American Lung Association or American Kidney Foundation. |
