Audrey O. Whisler, 82, of Constantine, Mich., passed away at Tuesday, March 3, 2009, in Three Rivers. She was born in Sturgis, Mich., on Aug. 16, 1926,  a daughter of Payson and Bessie (Bowman) Carper. Audrey graduated from White Pigeon High School in 1934. In 1945, Audrey married Arnold “Skinny” Whisler. He preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1986.  Audrey worked in accounting and retired from Bell & Sons in Mottville, Ind. Audrey is survived by her sons, Frank (Doris) Whisler of Texas, Larry (Barbara Ellis) Whisler of Indiana, Wayne (Judy) Whisler of Constantine; special companion, Junior (Earl) Bell of Mottville; brothers, George (Charlotte) Carper of Washington, Dick (Mary) Carper of Elkhart, Ind., Sam (Pat) Carper of White Pigeon; sisters, Mildred (Wally) Hosestead of Shipshewana, Ind., Phyllis (Dalton) Bell of Mottville, Carol (Bob) Bell, N.C.; grandchildren, Frank (Dawn) Whisler, Jr. and Corrina (Christopher) Vaughan, all of Texas, and six other grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her special pets Murphy and Max.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,  Arnold Whisler; and sisters Marjorie Carper, Wuanita Brogie, and Janet Mercer. Barbara Irene Parks Capac Barbara Irene Parks, 68, of Capac, passed away in her home Monday morning (March 2, 2009). She was born March 9, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Penn., the daughter of Leslie Russell Teets and Josephine Ann Kastovich. She married Patrick Keith Parks on August 17, 1957, in Pittsburgh, Penn. Patrick passed away August 4, 1995. Barbara was a Mom to Everyone , a homemaker and dedicated charity worker. She raised five loving children and provided a caring home for many other children in need. Barbara cherished and adored her eight beautiful grandchildren. She was an Angel with a Golden Heart who would give her last penny to help someone in need and was the Queen of Thrift Stores and the ultimate hunter of garage sale bargains. Barbara M. Smith Lum Barbara M. Smith, 62, of Lum since 1964 and otherwise a lifetime area resident, passed away Tuesday (February 24, 2009). She was born August 15, 1946, in Flint, to Fred and Doris (Miller) McHugh. She married William Smith on March 28, 1964 at Hunters Creek. Mrs. Smith was an avid sportswoman, when she had the opportunity - she truly enjoyed hunting and fishing. She was known for her gardening and flowerbeds, as well as taking time to appreciate the hummingbirds. Barbara was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and considered a kind and beloved neighbor. On a sunny June day, Betty Eloise was born June 11, 1921, to her parents, Lawrence and Dorothy Bliesner, in their farm home in Blissfield, Mich., area. She graduated from the Blissfield Schools. In 1947 Betty was married to Gordon McKee of Tecumseh, Mich., where they bought a home and farm. They were blessed with the birth of their three daughters, Nancy of Saline, Mich., Susan of Naples, Fla., and Patti who is deceased. Two grandchildren, Carla and Kristin, were her pride and joy. Betty’s interests were gardening, stamp collecting and writing to her many pen pals. Betty’s favorite Bible verse was John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting Life.” Preceding her in death was her husband of 50 years, Gordon, a loving daughter, Patti, and her husband, Michael; brother Robert; nieces, Laraine and Debbie; nephew Larry; her pen pal friend and Maid of Honor, Lindis, and a dear friend, Jean. Survivors include three brothers, Lawrence Bliesner, Jr. and his wife, Bette, James Bliesner and wife, Lucille, and Emerson Bliesner and wife, Barbara, and many nieces and nephews. For many months Betty was lovingly cared for in the home of her daughter, Susan and Jim Lierman, of Naples, Fla., and AVOW Hospice. On Feb. 22, 2009, Betty departed this life to be with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. According to Betty’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes on June 11, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Pastor LaFollette of Grace Bible Church, Tecumseh, officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be in Brookside Cemetery, Tecumseh. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Bible Church, of which Betty was a member, P.O. Betty Lucille Zickafoose, age 77, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away early Wednesday morning, March 4, 2009, at the home of her daughter Marsha in Howe, Ind. She was born Feb. 7, 1932, in Cecil, Ohio, Paulding County, a daughter of the late Nathan Ray and Bertha (Ballinger) Smith. Betty had resided in Sturgis since 1953, coming from LaGrange, Ind. On Feb. 27, 1951, she married Arthur E. “Gene” Zickafoose in Columbus, Ga. He died Aug.  30, 2001. She had owned and operated with her husband G&B Tree Service and the Southside Market, which was renamed Betty’s Discount. Both businesses were located in Sturgis. Betty enjoyed crossword puzzles and time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by a daughter, Marsha Zickafoose of Howe; three sons, Alan Zickafoose, Richard Zickafoose and Douglas Zickafoose, all of Sturgis; six grandchildren, Eric, Heather, Ryan, Christopher, Nathan and Krista; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Beverly A. Crissman of Sturgis; a brother; Robert C. Smith of Ocala, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Glenn Smith and Milan R. Smith. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak. Pastor Jeff Farnham will officiate. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, Sturgis. Blanche Barbara Carr, age 90, of Tecumseh died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Lynwood Manor in Adrian. She was born Oct. 10, 1918, in Munising, Mich., the daughter of Andrew and Margaret (Matuszewski) Demogola, who were immigrants to the United States from Poland and early settlers of Melstrand, Mich. Blanche worked at the Munising Paper Mill during World War II. She later moved to Adrian in 1962. While in Adrian she worked for Martin Marietta, Bohn Aluminum and Siena Heights. She started working in 1989 in Boysville of Michigan as a Foster Grandparent and retired from there after 15 years of service. She was a member of the Munising American Legion Auxiliary Post 0131 for 62 years. Blanche was also a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh and the Sacred Heart Church of Munising. Blanche is survived by her children, Joan (Jim) Anderson of Munising, John “Jack” (Connie) Carr of Tecumseh, Peter (Esther) Carr of Adrian and Mary Sue Carr of Port St. Lucie, Fla. Also surviving are five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great- great-grandchild, several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Steven Demogola, Michael Demogola and Theodore “Bud” Demogola, and her sisters, Rose Melwicki and Anna Hamilla. As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service and burial of cremains will take place at a later date in Munising, Mich. Blanche P. (Routsong) Holtz, age 95, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village. She was born Sept. 28, 1913, in LaGrange, Ind., a daughter of the late Ira and Cora (Helmer) Routsong. Blanche’s childhood was spent in LaGrange, where she graduated from LaGrange High School with the class of 1932. She moved to Sturgis during her early 20s and worked at several manufacturing jobs. On New Year’s Eve 1938, she met Raymond A. Holtz.  They were united in marriage on Sept. 23, 1939, in Middlebury, Ind., by Rev. Charles Goering.  He preceded her in death in Sept. 2004. Blanche had been employed at Freeman Mfg. and later retired from Sears & Roebuck Catalog Store in Sturgis. She and Raymond enjoyed traveling with their son Ray and spending time with their grandchildren.  One of her great joys was cooking and baking for her family. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 50 years and was active in the Ladies Lutheran Aid. Surviving are her children, Raymond E. Holtz of Lansing, Terry (Denise) Holtz of Sturgis, and Shirley (Lee) Taylor of Sturgis; eight grandchildren, Cassandra (Dominic) Ferguson of Sturgis, Reid (Rachael) Holtz of Cassopolis, Kara (Andy) Murray of Arlington Heights, Ill., Zachary Taylor, Sean Holtz, Vincent Holtz, Shayna Taylor, and Rayanne (Chris) Walter all of Sturgis; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; a son, Gary Holtz in 2005; a great-granddaughter, Terrie Ann Holtz; three brothers; and four sisters. The family will receive friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. Friday at The Hackman Family Funeral Homes, Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Despard "Des" Humphrys Lapeer Despard "Des" Humphrys, 80, of Lapeer, passed away Tuesday (February 24, 2009). He married Margaret Loretta Norman on February 19, 1955. Mr. Humphrys served his country in the United States Navy, then trained to become a U.S. Marine. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, where he was member of the Knights of Columbus and active with their pro-life movement. Des enjoyed gardening, his fruit trees and building hiking trails. Mr. Humphrys had a proud and colorful career in aerospace, specializing in telemetry. He was a electronics technician, government ammunition (explosives) inspector, working for Lockeed-Martin, indirectly for NASA. Despard was involved with instrumentation for the Apollo 12 capsule and later with the C5A Cargo Plane - the worlds largest cargo plane. Ultimately, Des was a family man, trying to involve all of his ten kids in any experience he enjoyed - from fishing to camping and more. He is survived by his ch |

Don Cobbs, 85, of Monroe, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at Hospice of Dayton.  He was born in Wolcottville, Ind., on June 22, 1923, to parents Carl and Bessie (Schanour) Cobbs. Don owned and operated an Archway Cookie franchise for many years.  He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in France.  He married his present wife, Margaret (Price) Cobbs in 1991.  Don was a member of the Elks Club, Masonic Lodge, Lions Club and served on the Monroe City Council.  He was an active member of Breiel Blvd. First Church of God, where he served as an usher.  He also belonged to the Country Cousins Square Dance Club and served as president of that club for many years. Don was a wonderful husband and father and is survived by his wife, Margaret L. Donald D. Bolenbaugh, age 80 years of North Adams, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at Allegiance Health System in Jackson. He was born on Nov. 23, 1928 in Horton, the son of Murl G. and Kathryn (Smith) Bolenbaugh.  Don was a professional truck driver. He delivered steel and other commodities throughout the 48 Continental United States with close to 3 million miles driven without an accident. Don is survived by seven children, four sons, David Bolenbaugh of Adrian, Joel (Mickie) Bolenbaugh of Norman, Okla., Eric (Jennifer) Bolenbaugh of Hillsdale and Erin (Kimberly) Price of Hudson; three daughters, Linda Bolenbaugh of Osseo, Melody Wollet of Hudson, and Angela (Paul) Conklin of Pittsford; son-in-law, Del Loranger of Hudson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Norm (Arlene) Bolenbaugh of Addison; and several nieces and nephews. Eloise D. Kottenbrock, age 82, of Burr Oak, Mich., passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at LTAC, Specialty Hospital in Berrien Center, Mich. She was born March 31, 1926, in Burr Oak, a daughter of the late Alfred and Zella (Disney) Walters and has been a lifelong Burr Oak resident, except for the past two years, when she resided with her daughter in St. Joseph. In 1977, she married Dr. Amos F. Kottenbrock. He preceded her in death in the late 1980s. Eloise retired from the Kirsch Company after 30 years of employment and then became the activities director for the Sturgis Senior Center.  She enjoyed working at the Sturgis Senior Center and would also volunteer many hours to help when she wasn’t working. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Ladies Lutheran Aide in Burr Oak and also served on the Burr Oak election committee for many years.  She enjoyed playing cards, especially with the Burr Oak Card Club where she would play euchre a couple times a week.  She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are two daughters, Diana (James) Anderson of St. Joseph and Erma Wooster of Branch; three grandsons, James Wooster of Ohio, Jody Wooster of LaGrange, Ind., and Jerry Wooster of Michigan; one granddaughter, Josie Cossiart of  Florida; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister: Katherine McKenzie of Ypsilanti; five stepchildren and their families, Mrs. Jane Korte, Mrs. Lois Halker, Mrs. Karen Meyers, John Kottenbrock, and Jim Kottenbrock all of Ohio; two step-grandsons, Daniel Anderson of Battle Creek and Brent Anderson of Richmond, Va.; four step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sisters.  The family will receive friends and relatives from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes, Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. Helen is survived by two daughters, Judy (James) Dunlap of Bryan, Ohio and Carolyn (Robert) Grimm of Alvordton, Ohio; four sons, Robert (Arletta) Moore of Frontier, Harry (Eliese) Moore of Waldron, Bruce Moore of Pittsford, and Gary (Sandra) Moore of Waldron; two sisters, Marcille Carter of Holiday City, Ohio and Lillie Junge of Holgate, Ohio; four brothers, Carl Shaffer of Hillsdale, Roy (Marilyn) Shaffer of Ypsilanti, Paul (Joyce) Shaffer of Waldron and Rich (Carolynn) Shaffer of Hillsdale; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband Lawrence, Helen was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, a daughter-in-law and three grandchildren. Funeral services for Helen L. Moore will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Don Lee officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Ransom Township. Helen Southworth, 91, of Morenci passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009, at home. She was born on June 15, 1917, in Metamora, Ohio, the daughter of William and Mayme (Meeker) Kahle. On June 15, 1954, in Curtis, she married Frederick Southworth. He preceded her in death on May 30, 1997. Helen lived her entire life in the Morenci area, working more than 45 years at the Morenci Bank as a bookkeeper, teller and officer, retiring in January of 1983 as Vice President of the Bank of Lenawee.  She was a member of the Croswell Opera House, the Lenawee County Historical Museum, the Lucy Wolcott Barnum Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the LaPlaisance Bay Chapter Daughters of the American Colonists. Helen is survived by several cousins. Besides her husband, Fred, Helen was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harland Kahle. There will be no visitation, funeral or viewing. MANNIKKO - Jack A. Mannikko, 71 of White Pine, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain. He was born August 6, 1937 in Ontonagon to the late Elsie (Carlson) Prisk and Toivo Mannikko. Jack graduated from Ontonagon High School and joined the Navy in 1955. He served for three years active duty and was a member of the reserves until 1963. Jack was very proud of his military service. In 1981 he was united in marriage to Susan Wiita. Jack was employed in the mining industry. He liked to work on all types of puzzles, from jigsaw to crossword. In the fall Jack enjoyed making firewood with his daughter Amber. He is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters, Amber, Sandy (Brian) Beauchamp and Wendy Davis; sons, Randy (Yolanda) and Jack Mannikko; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Beth) Mannikko; and special cousins, Marcie and Eino Mannikko, Elaine Scholar and Elvie Mannikko. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Candy Kay Mannikko; sister, Janet Neimila; and brother, Kenneth Mannikko. John spent much of his youth in the Pontiac area. He attended Pontiac Central High School, where he first met his wife of 43 years, Lavonne Burgess. After high school, he loyally served his country as Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. After returning from active duty, he married Lavonne and began a career in the automotive field as a mechanical engineer. John had an astounding understanding of old cars and soon developed a passion for collecting them. He would continue working within his trade up until his death. John was extremely devoted to his family and his friends in the Lapeer, Oakland and Macomb County areas. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Foxhunting in Metamora, Michigan was a passionate avocation for many years. Bob was a long-time advocate of animal rights and a loyal supporter of the Salvation Army and Disabled American Veterans. Leon S. Kimball, age 89 of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Saturday afternoon Feb. 28, 2009, at the Sturgis Hospital emergency room. He was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Sturgis, a son of the late Ray and Elsie (Squires) Kimball. Leon had resided in Sturgis his whole life. On March 3, 1945, he married Rolla Grattan at Fort Bragg, N.C. This marriage ended in divorce. He married Dolores Starai on May 25, 1985, in Chicago. This marriage also ended in divorce. For many years Leon was a general contractor, owning and operating his own construction company. He currently was a real estate broker and owned and operated Premier Properties in Sturgis. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis and since 1952, had been an active member of the Sturgis Rotary Club. Leon was very involved in the St. Joseph County Republican Party and the St. Joseph County Board of Realtors for many years. He was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning the rank of Second Lieutenant. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Mitchell) Rinek of Okemos and Martha (David) Cathcart of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; one son, John (Nancy) Kimball of Minneapolis, Minn.; six grandchildren, Andrew Rinek, Christopher Rinek, Blair Cathcart, Grant Cathcart, Megan Kimball and Lindsay Kimball; and his former wife, Dolores Kimball of Sturgis. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Leon Kimball will be held March 20 at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis. Lonnie G. Branscum, 61, of Deerfield passed away on Monday, March 2, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was born on Sept. 16, 1947, in Batesville, Ark., to Claud and Marie (Young) Branscum. On Jan. 29, 1966, Lonnie was married to Barbara Forche. She survives. Lonnie worked as a Die Maker for Ford Motor Company in Rawsonville, Mich., and retired in 1998. He enjoyed boating and spending summers at Devils Lake, and attending auctions and his grandchildren’s school sporting events. Lonnie was also a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Deerfield. Surviving is his wife, Barbara Branscum of Deerfield; four children, Lori (Les) Manley of Petersburg, Gregory (Cindy) Branscum of Clinton, Annette (Brad) Sieler of Petersburg and Becky Branscum of Deerfield; one brother, Gary Branscum of Deerfield; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Marie I. Radtke 1920-2009 Marie Irene Radtke, 88, Caseville, died Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at Lake Orion Nursing Home while under hospice care. She was born May 1, 1920 in Detroit to the late Albert Hugo and Mary Ann (Schulte) Hiller. She grew up in Center Line and graduated from St. Clement High School in 1938 after which she attended Wayne State College in Detroit. On May 30, 1942 she married John George Radtke Jr. at St. Clement Catholic Church. John preceded her in death on February 10, 1996. After the war, Marie and John built a home in Center Line where all of her children were raised. Marie retired in 1982 from H.L. Claeys Plumbing, Heating and Well Drilling of Warren. Having had a cottage in Caseville since 1964, they moved there upon retiring in 1982. Marie was an active member of St. Roch Catholic Church, having served on Parish Council and the Women's Society. She was also a member of the Caseville Eagles #3690 Auxiliary, Caseville Library Club and the Caseville Retirement Club. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, making afghans and spending time with her family. She is survived by her children, John (Joann), Alpena, Marie (Dennis) Bolo, Sterling Heights, Daniel (Dina), Bay City, Dianne Polk, Center Line and David (Denise), Allen, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and sister Virginia (Vincent) Grobbel, N.C. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ralph and Albert Hiller. Funeral mass was held on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at St. Roch Catholic Church. Rev. Kenneth Yaroch presided, with burial taking place in St. Roch Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Capuchin Monastery in Detroit. Marjorie “Midge” Van Raalte, age 83, of Holland, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, March 2, 2009. Midge was a member of Harlem Reformed Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel R. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. The funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. The Rev. Merle D. Raber, of Jonesville, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born April 9, 1927 in Allegan the son of Roger and Mabel (Long) Raber. He is survived by his wife, of 56 years, Alice B. Raber; four children, Zale (Alice) Raber of Suffolk, Va., Tori (Robert) Morrison of Brighton, Tenn., Kenneth (Christine) Raber of Holland, and William Raber of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Taylor and Merice Raber and David (Emily) Mobley; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Mr. Raber graduated from Allegan High School and continued his education at Michigan State University where he graduated in 1952. He served his country in the United States Navy and was a member of the American Legion Post in Jonesville. He worked as a Wildlife Biologist and retired from the Department of Natural Resources after 30 years of service. After his retirement he continued to work for the Hillsdale County Soil Conservation District. He was also a member of the Jonesville Lions Club, the Branch County Community Band, the Michigan Fiddlers Association and the Somerset Congregational Church and he was a life member of the International Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons. At his request cremation has taken place and a graveside memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Merle D. Raber will be held at the Moscow Plains Cemetery in Moscow Township at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor John Reist officiating. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Michigan Fiddlers Association-Youth Program or to the Chautauqua Building Program King’s Daughters and Sons, or the Somerset Congregational Church.   |

"WALTER" of Amherstburg, Ontario, passed away peacefully with family at his side at the Windsor Regional Hospital - Malden Park Palliative Care Unit on March 3, 2009 at the age of 86 following a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Walter was born in Bystrowicach, Poland on May 7, 1922 to Aniela and Jozef Nykiel. He was one of six children. During WW II, he joined the Polish armed forces under British command and served in the Middle East, Africa, and Italy. Following the war, Walter emigrated to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada in 1947 where he worked on sugar beet farms and later in the area coal mines. He met his future wife, Zofia, in Lethbridge and were married on August 26, 1950 at St. Patrick's Church. In 1958, Walter and his family emigrated to Detroit, Michigan, U.S, where he was employed at Henry Ford Hospital and retired after 25 years of dedicated service. Walter was predeceased by his loving wife, Zofia, and brothers Czeslaw, Godfryd, and Aleksander. He is survived by his two children - Bill (Toni) Nykiel and Aline (Jim) Hilton, two sisters - Josephine (Tony) Mroz and Katy (Stanley) Smiegielski, sister-in-law Leona (Steve) Spisak, five grandchildren - Christopher, Zofia, Matthew, Karrie, and Carolyn, five great-grandchildren Justin, Amanda, Nathaniel, Jaylin, and Ian, and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends in Canada, United States, and Poland. The family would like to thank the very many caring people that helped to make Walter's last years easier: Dr. Lovell and staff at the Amherstburg Medical Associates and Walk-In Clinic, Dr. Moore and the caring staff at Henry Ford Hospital, Windsor Regional Hospital - Met Campus and Malden Park Palliative Care Unit. Rex Blake Flickinger, 87, of Pioneer, Ohio, passed away Saturday Feb. 28, 2009, at home following an extended illness. He was born May 21, 1921, in Ranson Township to Ora and Mable (Mills) Flickinger.  Rex retired from the Aro Corporation in 1983, and was a longtime pastor at many area churches including East Ovid, South Amboy and Camden Missionary Church, where he currently served.  He is survived by the love of his life, wife Marjorie May (Keck) Flickinger, whom he married over 70 years ago on June 17, 1938.  He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Also surviving are daughters. Joanne Dohm of Pioneer, Lynda Robison of Hillsdale, Jill (Sam) Shaw of  Montpelier, Ohio, Leah (Kevin) Klingler of Waldron; son, Lynn (Aimie) Flickinger of Macon, Ga.; sister, Jeanne (Russell) Gee of Waldron; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, O.J., Harry and Max; sister, Marjorie Loomis; two sons-in-law, Jim Dohm and Jim Robison; and one grandson, Dennis Robison. Robert “Bobby” A. Searing, 63, of Coldwater, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 6, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. The service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Arnold of the Quincy Union Church officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Bobby was born July 17, 1945 in Jackson to Robert and Elizabeth (Newell) Searing. Mr. Searing was a lifelong resident of Branch County. He attended the Union Church in Quincy and had worked at the former Midwest Foundry in Coldwater for a few years. Bobby enjoyed fishing, listening to music, telling jokes, and taking walks, especially to visit his many friends at the Coldwater “Tasty Twist.” Most of all he loved the time he spent with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother William Searing. Bobby is survived by his sisters Rebecca Walters, Beverly (Penny) Green and Vickie Searing, all of Coldwater, brother David (Selina) Searing of Coldwater, half brother Barry (Rita) Searing of Gillette, Wy., eight nieces and nephews, 18 great nieces and nephews and two great, great nieces. In his passing and in his earlier struggles, he was well cared for by family and his Borgess Hospice caregivers. Rudolfs was born April 21, 1905 in Leepkalne, Latvia, emigrated to the United States in 1949 and has been a resident of Kalamazoo since that time. He was a member of the Kalamazoo Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Kalamazoo Chapter of the Daugavas Vanagi. Services will be held Thursday, 1:00 PM at the Langland Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Ruth N. Swartzendruber 1925 - 2009 Ruth Naomi Swartzendruber, 83, Pigeon, passed away Friday, February 27, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care in Pigeon. She was born in Oliver Township on April 21, 1925, the daughter of the late Emanuel and Kathryn (Zehr) Swartzendruber. Ruth was a woman of faith and a member of Pigeon River Mennonite Church. She loved helping the poor and needy and was known as the "bread lady" of the community. She gave her time and money to many Christian organizations, including Rosedale Mission and Gospel for Asia. Although not a school teacher, she had a passion to teach, which included Bible School and Sunday School, and enjoyed helping people. Ruth often said, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." Ruth was a homemaker throughout her lifetime and worked for Dr. Scheurer as a housekeeper and assistant for 40 years. She enjoyed handwork such as knitting, sewing, making toys and also enjoyed gardening and bird watching. She especially loved her granddaughter Kailea, her "little dolly". She is survived by her daughter, Ovidia (Titus) Cerna, Goshen, Ind.; a granddaughter, Kailea Cerna and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jantzi and a brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Mabel Swartzendruber. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Pigeon River Mennonite Church, with Rev. Alvin Yoder, pastor, officiating. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Sarah “Jane” Durall, 76, of Mosherville, passed away Friday at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  She was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Magoffin County, Ky., to Walter and Sadie Wireman.  She worked as a certified nursing assistant at Spring Arbor Manor and was a member and current president of the Mosherville Ladies Aid.  She loved her cat and enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking and canning. On Sept. 11, 1965, she married Charles Franklin Durall and he preceded her in death on Jan. 16, 1994. Survivors include: one daughter, Julie Gordon of Jonesville; grandchildren, Elizabeth Gordon of Jonesville, Amy (Steve) Cain of Somerset Center, Michael (Kari) Prater of Litchfield; great-grandson, Gage Paul Cain; three sisters, Kash Sanford, Charlene Sanford, Erma Lovely; five brothers, Harold Dean Wireman, Claude Wireman, Bob Wireman, Clyde Wireman and Russell Wireman. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sons (Charles & Paul Prater), two sisters, one brother, and one great-grandson. Tanya Marie Brooks Fenton Tanya Marie Brooks, 41, of Fenton, passed away Thursday (February 26, 2009) at Hidden Peace Assisted Living. She was born April 10, 1967, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Robert Rudyj and Jean Knox. She married Tim Brooks on January 21, 1989 in Chicago. Tanya attended Indiana University, earning her Associates Degree in pre-school education. She then moved to Ft. Wayne and became a pre-school teacher for Epiphany Lutheran Church. After moving to Michigan, Tanya became the visionary for Hidden Peace Assisted Living, searching for a way to comfortably enable women with Multiple Sclerosis to lead a normal life. She was a strong woman who survived multiple sclerosis and breast cancer. Faith and love were the cornerstones of her life. Tanya was a devoted mother and wife who will be missed dearly and loved forever. His pride and joy was a 1952 John Deere R purchased new in 1951 and held to this day. A private family gathering proceeded cremation. Walter F. Czajkowski  Sr., age 83, of Bronson, was surrounded by his loving family when he went peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Sturgis Hospital. Walter was born June 20, 1925, in Bronson, son of John and Alma (Smoker) Czajkowski and was a lifelong resident. He married Eleanor Smoker on Oct. 23, 1955, at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson. Walt was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He purchased his family farm in 1958 in Bronson, where he and Eleanor lived and farmed most of his life. While farming, he also worked for 24 years at the former Douglas Manufacturing Company (now Douglas Autotech) until he retired at age 62. He continued to farm until just before his death. He was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson , the Sacred Heart Society, Farm Bureau and the AARP. Walt enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing and collecting miniature toy farm tractors and implements. His family was the light of his life. Surviving are Eleanor, his wife of 54 years; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Steve Swick of Coldwater; sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Luci Czajkowski and Mark and Amy Czajkowski and son Walter Czajkowski Jr., all of Bronson; grandchildren, Eric Czajkowski, Josh Czajkowski, Sean Czajkowski, Kaitlyn Czajkowski, Branden Czajkowski, Morgan Czajkowski and Alexis Czajkowski, Erin Wolgamuth and Sidney Swick; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
