NELSON ROLAND |
"DEAN" passed away on March 2, 2009, after a brave but courageous battle with cancer at 81 years old. A celebration of his life will be held at The Heathers Country Club, Bloomfield Hills, MI, 11-4 p.m., March 10th. Dean was born in Detroit, the only son of the late Roland J. and late Marion Nelson (nee Dean). He grew up in Royal Oak, MI, and joined the US Navy towards the end of WW-II. In 1951 he graduated from Michigan State University and in 1953 started his own real estate appraisal company, aptly named Dean Appraisal. In 2000, the company joined the National firm of Integra Realty Resources and is to this day, a stalwart of the business community. Dean never retired and continued to counsel clients and write articles throughout the remaining days of his illness. His latest article, "Enterprise Component Allocation: Methodology Discussion", will be published in April 2009, by the CRE. Member of: the Appraisal Institute; Counselors of Real Estate; Real Estate Answer Forum; Institute of Real Estate Management; National Association of Realtors; the Birmingham Michigan #44 F and AM, Detroit Scottish Rite; and others. Dean taught real estate appraisal classes at several Michigan colleges over the years. Dean authored more than 150 articles published by various professional appraisal institutions, contributing significantly to appraisal theory and techniques including, "Overall Rate-Band of Investment Style"-1969; "Market Testing of Ellwood I & II"-1976-77; "Hotel Enterprise Valuation"- 1988; "Valuation of a Pari-Mutuel Racetrack", among others. Dean is survived by his loving wife Ede who was always ready for the next adventure. The two of them traveled the world for the past 20 years from the South Pole to distant wonders of all Continents and over 60 International airports, with Dean capturing it all on video. Dean was the loving father of Robin Nelson and Nancy (Jon) Simon, and loving step-father of Kathy Handlon, Coleen Handlon-Shaull (Mark), Thomas (Viki) Handlon, Timothy (dear friend Barb) Handlon, and Matthew (dear friend Tracey) Handlon. Also survived by one grandson, Jacob Simon, and 10 step-grandchildren: David and Mark Ferrio; Melissa and Tom Handlon; Erin Stapleton (Ryan), Heather and Mallory Handlon; and Christie, Holly and Jeremy Handlon; First cousins, Baldwin, Brazill, and Fitzpatrick families. Dean was a devoted, caring and generous husband to his loving wife, Ede. A good-natured "character" with a unique sense of humour, he was always ready with a play-on-words, and loved to hear and tell jokes and tales of his adventures in and out of the business of real estate. He learned many life lessons "on the stand" and continued to share his love of the business with his friends and colleagues. He loved to travel to northern Michigan for the traditional "hunting season", stopping in to check on the Buckaroo on his way to the Beaver Farm in Baraga. He brought many friends and sons in tow to share those eventful trips. He was a man that will be remembered and missed by many. His stories will resound in the halls of "Dean Appraisal" for many years to come. In lieu of flowers, he asks that you make a sizeable purchase at your favorite watering hole and tell the stories that he no longer can. Donations in his memory may be made to Masonic Lodge #44, 37357 Woodward, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304. |

WAY TO TODAY - Music enjoyable at skating rink Saturday, February 28, 2009 5:08 PM - GARY PULLANO |
From the pages of the Holland City News and Holland Sentinel. Saturday March 1, 1884 • One very enjoyable feature of the roller skating rink is the music furnished by Dr. Gee's band. • The total amount received for the endowment of theological instruction in Hope College has now reached $3,884. • Business is picking up on the Chicago & West Michigan Railway. Man of the employees who were “laid off” some time ago have been reinstated. We notice Mr. Geo. Hunt on duty at the freight office again. • A new drawbridge is being constructed over Grand River at Ferrysburg that is to support two tracks, one for the use of the Chicago & West Michigan Railway and the other for the Detroit and Milwaukee Railway. This will alleviate the problems presented by having only a single track. Thursday March 4, 1909 • Hereafter, the night firemen, of which there re four at each engine house, will receive $125 per annum, a raise of $25. The day men will get a raise of $10 each. The raise was made in response to a petition from the night men for a raise of $50 that was presented to the board of police commissioners. • At the board of public works meeting Monday night it was reported the test of the new turbine generator unit at the city lighting plant made a very favorable showing. • The Buss Machine works shipped one of its 64-inch cabinet planers to Steinway & sons of New York City. This extraordinary planer will be used to lane the large sounding boards of Steinway pianos. • When you come in on the Interurban care get your bearings when the conductor calls out “Lincoln Avenue.” Land street is now more and Lincoln Avenue has taken its place. Last night the council passed the resolution that changed the name of the street. It was adopted based on a petition from Land street residents. • The new staff of the Anchor at Hope College includes editor Henry K. Pasma and associate editors John Wichers and John Warnshuis. Thursday March 1, 1934 • Technically, nearly 7,000 Holland residents today are subject to 90 days in jail or $100 fine for failure to pay the head tax levied for old age pensions. The deadline passed at 5 p.m. yesterday with only a small fraction of one percent of some 7,000 registered making the $2 payment. It is unlikely that any legal action will be taken in the city to enforce the head tax ruling. • Word has been received from Washington that Cong. George Foulkes, Democratic leader, will attend the banquet and ball to be staged by the Young Democratic Club of Holland at the Masonic Temple Monday evening. Gary Pullano is a resident of Park Township. |
